There are cookbooks that are good cooking or good reading, but not always both. This one covers both well. It contains recipes familiar to anyone from Michigan or the upper midwest with interesting variations and thoughtful alternatives. The letters from Mrs. Chard and the commentary of the writer put the reader into Michigan's upper peninsula through many seasons.

Lots of good veggie recipes including many for zucchini--love the zucchini canoes, baked zucchini and brown rice and the summer squash casserole. Hot Potatoes is also yummy--tastes like German potato salad.

The letters from Mrs. Chard that introduce each section of this cookbook are wonderful. They convey the changing seasons and rhythms of rural farm life in Michigan's upper peninsula. The recipes varied with an especially large number devoted to vegetables (as Mrs. Chard runs a vegetable stand).

This book, aside from having yummy recipes, is a record of the beauty and community that Mrs. clChard collected around her throughout her life.
