In this Very Short Introduction, eminent biologist and popular science writer Dorothy Crawford offers a fascinating portrait of these infinitesimally small but often highly dangerous creatures. Crawford first relates how viruses were d ...more

The very short introductions series books that i have read are good in the aim they search, they are little pocket books with densely packed well structured information.

After a short introduction to the different families of viruses , their molecular structure and machinery, the book is mostly devoted to the human disease viruses as the herpesvirus, the smallpox, the papiloma, the hepatitis, the HIV,the polio, the flu ,the measless, the mumps and the emerging diseases as SARS or ebola virus.

An exemplary scientifically literate introduction to all you need to know about viruses. Crystal clear explanations, good photos and diagrams. By no means a text book but a great introduction for the general reader from this excellent Oxford series. Extremely well written and edited too.

Very short introduction to understand viruses and their importance. Easy language and explanations. Suggested for beginners.

This suffered quite a bit by comparison with A Very Short Introduction to Infectious Disease which I read earlier in the year. Whilst that VSI was very clearly structured around a series of case studies this had a tendency to fall into a 'and another example of this... and another example of this... and another example...' pattern that could be a bit dizzying, and certainly won't help with long term retention of the material.

That aside this was densely packed with a lot of useful, and well expla

tried to cover a bit more ground instead of digging deeper, but a pretty decent review of what viruses are, why they matter, and what's being done about them.

i wish it had at least given us a chapter focusing solely on structure, going into capsids and envelopes and stuff, but i guess for a book that assumes no prerequisites it did its job pretty well

absolutely brilliant easy read very accessible for beginners and a lovely refresher for those that have not studied for a while. I know this book inside out and would recommend to anyone with an interest in Virology. Simple, engaging yet informative. The informal style of writing makes this a great introduction to the subject.

this book gives you one more reason to be proud of your ancestors for surviving a very hostile environment and for passing on a strong immune system, yet, not very strong. there is a balance to be reached. this is the first time for me to know that Viruses are not living-beings! just a bad news wrapped in protein.
Now you got me addicted on this "a very short introduction" series.

This very short introduction is a good summary of Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic without Quammen's journalistic idiosyncrasies. Unfortunately I have a damaged copy with parts of the passages missing.

After taking microbiology I wanted to know more about viruses. As a 2nd year biology student I wanted a book that elaborated on the history of viruses. This book is easy to read, and filled with all sorts of interesting stats. After reading this I ordered another book on viruses.

A very interesting read, but rather dense. It was written in terms that those with little science background could understand but still quite a bit to slog through.
