The Silent City is my favourite installment (to date) of this ten-part series. For the first time, I found myself fully immersed in the storytelling, enjoying the setting, the characters, the romance, the reveals and the interesting developments that occurred in this eighth enlightening installment. I’m not saying I haven’t enjoyed these aspects in the past—far from it—but, for me, this was the best paced story so far, consistently holding my interest where, previously, some of the other stories sometimes left me in pockets of boredom.

As I close in on the final two chapters of this saga, I can’t deny how equally excited and ill-at-ease I am. There really is something to be said about this whole duel-timeline thing, allowing us to know some things in advance and be completely clueless of how it will all end. Only time will tell.

This journey has been a twisted path and that which was previously hidden is being exposed.

Like the two halves of an oyster shell, we've seen past and future, but this installment addresses that central piece binding them together, that hinge of two lines and lives. Jahn is beginning to accept that reality of the situation and who he is. What he is.

“Power never has only one function,” Ji replied. “It is neither good nor evil—neither inherently creative nor destructive.

I really needed this book at this point of the story. It’s a chance to catch my breath and consolidate a lot of what has happened in the past.

We are back with John’s POV now and a lot of questions are answered. But that in itself only poses more questions doesn’t it? It always does with Ginn Hale. She’ll give you a bone with one hand and sprinkle a trail to an all-you-can-eat buffet with the other. I’m always hungry for more answers, but for now, I’m satisfied.

I can’t believe how pivotal Ji has been in shaping the future of not only John and Ravishan but the whole of Basawar! If there was a great big inflatable finger of blame to point it would be aiming straight at Ji. Naughty doggie! Bad girl! You’d think a wise witch would know better huh?

Finally we get to learn more of the workings of the Fai’daum; a clever, well organised and a truly underestimated force with far reaching influence. I’m glad to see John and Ravishan side with the good guys - finally allowing them some unguarded quality time together while John (aided by Ji) learns to control his powers; which at present are only crafted for mass destruction.

Ginn Hale assigns her brilliance in this book to describing the immense affinity John has with rocks and well, anything geological actually. She once again steals my breath with her beautiful descriptions:

” John closed his eyes. He concentrated on one edge of the dark, glittering mass. He lifted it slowly, untangling the twisted strands of feldspar and slipping apart the tiny knots of sodium and silicon. Dark biotite and silvery muscovite flashed like filigree around black quartz. The stone unfurled.”

Everythings about to go tits up in the next book - I can feel it in my bones! I’m edging closer to the finish and I don’t want to. I’m stilling waiting the moment of crushing agony when we lose Ravishan and the suspense is killing me.

My favourite and most moving quotes from this book:

“Strength and courage are as much a part of human nature as weakness and cowardice. I don’t have much of a use for people who choose to be less than they can be.”

“It does no good to pine for a place you cannot return to,” Ji told him quietly. “Let it go and look to the life you have here and now. That is all any of us can do.”

About Fikiri: “What’s he like?” Tanash asked. “He’s like an infestation of fleas,” Ravishan said. Then he shook his head. “No, fleas you can get rid of with a comb and some soap.”

**Warning Spoilers Ahead**

”What if the power of the Rifter can’t do anything but tear the world apart?”

Ginn Hale may have messed with my head here a bit. Haha….But she can f*ck with my head anytime she wants! I can’t seem to explain exactly how this chapter in the Rifter journey made me feel, but let me give it a go…

Everything changes in this story. We jump from one side to the other. The Silent City, book 8 in the series, allows readers inside the Fai’daum. We get to see, feel, and understand the other side of the battle. Meet the “enemy”. Feel a new power. And man, did my head and reading soul latch onto the experience. I felt like a wide-eyed kid bouncing around a candy store for the first time. Touring the grounds, meeting new people, and seeing the differences and similarities between the Fai’daum and Payshmura ways felt weird at times, but intense as well. I kept searching and waiting for the pain and trouble.

And that feeling—that sense of mistrust is where Ms. Hale played with my head. The switch felt so fast, so complete, and at times too easy. Everyone switched sides with ease. *shrugs* I began to look high and low for signs of trust or trouble—Why is he being so nice? What does she want? This is not a complaint really. My heart just kept looking for the backstab, betrayal, and other shoe to drop. To be honest, I’m now thinking my “shields-up” response may show off my dazzling trust issues in the world more than anything else. Haha…Whether Ms. Hale planned the paranoia attack or not, my whole body was tense with anticipation just holding on for the “Gotcha”! And even if it doesn’t come—I had fun on the edge of my seat waiting for it. If that makes any sense at all. :D

I enjoyed my time here on the other side of the battle line. So many new characters and details to absorb into my heart with smiles and magic. But my favorite part of this story was the ease and sexiness between John and Ravishan. No more hiding! What these men have shared and sacrificed for each other makes my heart skip a beat with love and awe. They were very sweet, funny, and downright sexy in this part of the Rifter ride. Hell—they were all over each other and I loved every gasp, squeeze, suck and moan!

The end is near. My heart knows the end is on the way, but I’m not ready. I’m not ready to let go at all!

Off to book nine….

If I hadn’t already realized that this series is actually one book split in ten parts, I would be saying how rare it is to see a series still going so strong in its eight book.
As it is, the only thing I can complain about is the blatant lack of editing of the ridiculously overpriced bundle I’m reading on Kindle Unlimited. Really, it pains me to see such a great story treated this way.

Because I had grown so attached to Jath'ibaye and Khalil in their time pocket, I was a tiny bit sad to be brought back to Jahn and Ravishan's story. It may also be because I know that something dreadful is ahead and I'm too afraid to face it. *sobs*

Book 8 of the series had a lot to do with Jahn's training and ultimately use of his power. I found this all fascinating...and I loved the introduction and interaction with the characters in this Fai'daum story arc.

I was slightly bummed that a good portion of this book had Jahn and Ravishan separated. HOWEVER, the reuniting of them was so goooooood and swoon-worthy. Also, I kinda adore how jealous Ravishan gets. :)

I also really appreciate how characters appearing and reappearing and little memories here and there feel like hidden gems sprinkled throughout the story. Like gifts for those who've so faithfully read the series. :)

I see how this book is the big buildup for the ending. And I gotta say...I'm not ready...

As predicted I spent the entirety of this book in the past, but it was an interesting and informative past. One that contained both Jahn/John/Jath'ibaya and Kyle/Kahlil/Ravishan (pick a name any name). It would also seem that the past is catching up to the present so I have hopes that with book #9 The Iron Temple I will begin to see things come full circle.

One thing I do know for sure is that for me the word boring is not an applicable descriptive in regards to these books. Confusing at times could work but definitely not boring.

This is a much needed calm before the storm, which is ironic considering it starts with a storm. 😁 But at the same time, we know what's going to come, so the calm was more wistful than peaceful.

Now there's only two sections left. I want to know how all these threads get pulled together and resolved, but at the same time I don't want it to end. What to do?

Ok, this is not funny any more. I'm reading this series for a couple of months now and quite frankly, getting tired of it. There's this huge issue with a past/present/past jumping I have here which annoys me A LOT! But I keep thinking about John and Kahlil and really want to know their story. And so I keep going back to them. It's a slow moving series for me, but I do plan to finish it.

This instalment, however, was an overkill, in my opinion. We are back in the past and chew the same events in detail again and again. :(

Two more books to go...

In the 8th books we're once again thrown back into the past to find out how events led to book 7. I enjoyed it very much, I really was curious to see how Jahn got to be the man we meet in the previous books. Also we see an other glimpse in his and Ravishan's (Kahlil) relationship. They're so beautiful together they make me ache. We also see what being the Rifter really means to Jahn. Seriously these books are so addictive and I'm dreading the moment when the series will be over. Also the writing and world building are exquisite. Ginn Hale is one extremely talented writer!

This series just gets better with each installment and is a must for fantasy lovers. John and Ravishan encounter the Fai'daum, and Ji begins to instruct John to take control of his power without hurting himself or others. I loved the explanation as to how John received his name, Jath'ibaye. Very apt. Moving on to book 9 The Iron Temple

John and Ravishan join the Fai'daum revolutionaries in this book set in past time.

'John wished the ground would swallow him up, but checked himself, fearing that he might actually be able to make that happen. Keeping his eyes on his charm, he murmured, "Yes. We've kissed. We've kissed a lot." At this, he thought he heard Kansa snicker. It was ridiculous, but John felt a hot blush spreading across his face.'

Each book just gets better and better. This is mostly due to the reader understanding more and more. The storytelling is just as excellent.

This one is from John’s perspective. He and Ravishan are now fighting for the rebel faction, the Fai'daum. What a turnabout. From priests to rebels. At the center of all the turmoil, though, remains their devotion to each other. And we find out how John gets his name, Jath’ibaye… And we learn its meaning: solitary green.

It comes as an award. The bestowing of this new name by the Fai'daum is a kind of acceptance of him into their tribe. To save a vital mission, John volunteers to act as a diversion, a deadly dangerous job that culminates in a horrific run for his life that tests him to his limits.

It proves John's worth to the Fai'daum, but this scene almost brings you to tears. Because it’s really a distillation of John and this great destructive power that lies within him. And how he lives with it, how he tests himself to control it. How it separates and isolates him. And why Ravishan, who is the only one who understands some of it, is so dear to him.

“Jath’ibaye,” John said. He closed his eyes against the harsh lamplight. The name evoked a solitary green refuge. It conjured the image of a calm moment in a deep forest, when the sun filtered through leaves and cast warm emerald shadows. The sweet perfume of bramble flowers mixed with the salty scent of his own sweat. He thought of Ravishan’s lips on his skin and suddenly realized that he was drifting into a dream… of that warm green sanctum that his new appellation seemed to promise.”

“You are the one I love, Ravishan. No one else.”

Well I managed to find some time to pick up the series again and it's awesome still! :) Some great stuff is happening and I can feel everything building towards the inevitable. Gah, I love this series. Straight onto the next one...

---------

I need to get back into this... It's a brilliant series, but I felt exhausted by the time I got to the end of the last instalment. So I've kind of stalled out and need to get back into this one so I can finish the series. Might try and finish the remaining three this weekend.

Rifter Book Eight: The Silent City continues to piece together the long reaching and rather complicated plot. This is one of the better installments from my perspective because I’m an unabashed John/Jath’ibaye fan so the fact that he’s the narrator and main focus works very well for me. Here the story picks up after Ravishan and John left the Holy Road and are hiding in the woods. John, as the Rifter, is unleashing a hellish storm to help his healing but he can’t control the storm. A group of revolutionaries, the Fai’daum, find and take in both John and Ravishan as John learns to control his power. Their relationship deepens and takes on more significance with even a rare on page sex scene (don’t miss it!).

Once again Hale delivers an excellent installment in this epic series. For those following along we learn more about how John became Jath’ibaye and how he learned to harness and control his Rifter powers. Since we’ve already seen the future in previous books, Book Eight fills in the gaps in how that future came to be. It’s a much needed and well-written edition that offers great details and an enthralling narrative. I didn’t want the story to end and never even noticed the pages flying by. John is such an engaging voice and the story is so rich and fascinating that even the quiet times, such as this book, offer considerable entertainment and information.

The link between John and the Fai’daum was desperately needed – I was wondering when we’d find out how that happened – and the addition of seeing Ravishan and John’s relationship grow and develop is a definite plus. In fact this installment offered the precise elements that I was missing from previous books. It gave me exactly what I wanted and from John’s perspective so really I’m a happy reader. If you’re not such a John fan, don’t worry. There are numerous other characters that move in and out of the pages with importance and interest. This includes Ravishan who is a prominent character in this series. His interactions with John are somewhat limited to romantic entanglements but I’m sure this won’t bother anyone.

The various details and important elements are coming together and clearly setting up for the big finale. I’m eagerly awaiting the showdown and how the book will all come together. This installment is similar to the last one in that it’s quiet and shows more character development while filling in the plot than action. It’s much needed though and I’ve no doubt the final two books will have enough action to please any fans.

At the same time this series is so complicated, so epic, and so intricate that I wish there was more time just to enjoy the story. Each book has a purpose in furthering the plot, the phenomenal world building, the complicated characters, the interwoven relationships, and the action but each book also reveals important twists and necessary information you can’t miss. There is very little time to just sit back and enjoy the process and journey the characters are on. Essential twists will likely be revealed up to the very end of the story so you’re constantly working to put together the various pieces to the fuller puzzle. This isn’t bad at all, and in fact quite enjoyable and part of the entertainment aspect of the series, but it also lacks the ability to just let the story flow and the reader to sit back and enjoy.

That’s a minor compliant, if it even is one, and doesn’t stand a chance in the face of such a great series. This book in particular is very good and definitely one of my favorites. I loved watching how Ravishan and John’s relationship deepened while John truly comes to understand his power and the hard choices he has to make. I’m both excited for the last two books and sad this series is coming to an end. Too bad it can’t go on forever.

This quote pretty sums up this book for me: "He was not a distant observer, recording the behavior of a strange society. He was enmeshed in this world and he had taken a side."

A lovely installment, but you can feel the bad horizon coming.

I dread the ongoing story - things we already know will happen, but not hlw and when. I'm so enthralled by this series that it feels kind of cathartic. You know it will hurt like hell, but the ride there and the end result will be fantastic.

This installment entirely happens in John's and Ravishan's past. Running away, they encounter Fai'daum, who allow first John and then both of them to join. Ji teaches John to control his power. She is the only one who, at this point, is aware of his real nature. She tells him that they have to destroy the gate between the worlds so that Basawar wouldn't be destroyed. That means that John and Laurie can't go home. Fukiri also joins Fai'daum. Neither Ravishan nor John are particularly happy about it. (Nor was I. XD)

John remains in the north with Lafi'shir's special team, while Ravishan goes with Fai'daum leader to destroy Umbhra’ibaye.

After he took six bullets leading the enemies of Fai'daum away, Lafi'shir names John - Jath'ibaye, after his uncle.

"The name evoked a solitary green refuge. It conjured the image of a calm moment in a deep forest, when the sun filtered through leaves and cast warm emerald shadows. The sweet perfume of bramble flowers mixed with the salty scent of his own sweat. He thought of Ravishan’s lips on his skin and suddenly realized that he was drifting into a dream."

I loved seeing John coming into his own and the deepening relationship between him and Ravishan.

A hiatus from the intensity. Many of the questions that still lingered get answered. The puzzle has come together beautifully, only a few missing pieces to go!

Gah I don't have words because there are only two books to the end of this series, and I must read on...

Note: i will divide my review into 2 parts: the well-constructed review and the fangirling part;) + my favourite moment. enjoy!

*sighs*
what to say what to say.
Every review i write the same thing: i didn't think i could fall in love even more with this series, but to Parfir's will, i did.
As many other reviewers have speculated, i too think that this part of the Fai'dum arc, meaning the past of it, is the big buildup we're riding before the climax descends upon us and destroys us. And the funny thing is we KNOW what's about to happen. We know the pain and sorrow we will have to live with what's waiting for us in the last two books.

In The Silent City, we learn of the lifestyle inside of the Fai'dum community; The people, their morals, their goals and the respect they have for each others.
Personally, i kept thinking, they're so human, which they are of course, but details like bullying, striking down toxic fanaticism and fighting for their rights and world warmed my heart so much.
Because such stuff like these seem so ugly in our world, but in Basawar, everything i felt along their training and insight on their plans was pride and excitement and of course the fact that i felt that i was there, training with them, as if i was to go and battle with them, was only possible with the magic of Ginn Hale's writing and power to absolutely grab us by the arms and pull us in with her words.

Another wonderful thing we got to explore through the 8th book and something i couldn't WAIT to know more about was John learning how to control his powers.
1-Breaking out of the prison cell
2-Freeing himself on The Holy Road
3-All the training with Ji
4-The distraction of the rashan
5-His regeneration
and every moment where we see the land and living obeying and turning to John's will and emotions, details like the ground heat coming up to warm him, his body knowing instinctively where every rock and every tree is and don't get me started on all the chemical details i am OBSESSED with his small rantings and how he breaks down every molecule to its core.
I'm not someone who is very fond of scientific subjects at school but i am so engrossed with the whole nature-chemistry thing going on that i am actually starting to become interested.

Should i talk about the romantic moments;)? naah i better leave it to the fangirling part because BOI-

NOW TO THE FANGIRLING PART DISCLAIMER: LOTS OF CAPS AND SCREAMING:
O.
MAI.
GOD.
FIRST OF ALL, as someone who's reading this series in one sitting, let me just say that during the wHOLE BOOK, I STAYED ON MY TOENAILS, WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO MAKE ME SOB/GASP/SCREAM IN FEAR. But Ginn apparently knows how to play this game so at the end i was like- wait. THATS IT?? NO TORTURE OR PLOTWIST OR DEATH OR MORE MISCHIEF??!?!? And of course my happiness was interrupted by me remembering that this was the calm before the storm.

SECOND, CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE ROMANTIC MOMENTS? OKE? OKE. aside from those wonderfully written scenes that i am REALLY grateful for, i was mostly happy about them being able to freely be together- BY THE WAY SAIMURA I SEE U BUDDY;;)))

To be frank, i am SCARED. of finishing the Rifter series.
I don't think i'll ever be emotionally attached to a series more than to the Rifter series.
Ever.

FAVOURITE MOMENT:

three words.

I know the back and forth is good for the story as a whole but I would rather have a straight time line, as far as possible. We could’ve easily gotten to read the series in a different pattern instead of get it all mixed up.

Tension building, check. Boredom with some bits? check. *sigh*

Knowing that the events we’re building up to have already happened kind of make me want to skip reading them. Probably I’m the only one feeling like that…

The writing and storytelling itself is beyond fantastic though :)

Also I'm totally dreading the end of their "future/present" 'arc' but I hope we get at least the full 10th book filled with it.

Spring 2023 (April);

Doing a full-on set for all ten/eleven of these novellas, read for another game. They were an entertaining but very simplistic read. I did love seeing how everything came together toward the end, slotting details in from the beginning, but there were a number of problems with only a handful of people spotlighted and a lot of details about them unknown, too.
