An Introduction to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: Skills and Applications

Rate this book
An Introduction to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is the definitive beginner′s guide to the basic theory, skills and applications of CBT. In this eagerly-awaited second edition, the authors set out the core concepts and generic skills of CBT, including case formulation; the therapeutic relationship; and cognitive, behavioural and physiological therapeutic strategies. Practical illustrations of how these techniques can be applied to the most common mental health problems ensure that theory translates into real-life practice. New to this edition, the authors o cultural diversity in greater depth o the current topicality of CBT, especially within the NHS o latest Roth/Pilling CBT competencies o the impact of third wave CBT in more detail. As well as exploring depression, panic and agoraphobia, OCD and anxiety disorders, the book covers other less common disorders. Discussion of different methods of delivery includes work with individuals, groups, couples and families. This edition also includes extra case study material, student exercises and discussion points. This fully updated Introduction remains the key textbook for those coming to CBT for the first time, whether on training courses or as part of their everyday work. It is also useful for more experienced therapists wanting to refresh their core skills.

What a great hundreds-page marketing manual (sarcasm). Written like it was written in the 90s. Terrible on so many levels. Please don’t.

Well it was a good simple book to really understand CBT. For that I think it was worth reading. Boosted my confidence that I know what I’m doing. CBT itself - meh

Really informative book. I would recommend this book to somebody studying to be a professional therapist. Almost every practical part of CBT and its theraputic practice is discussed at length. The only downside is that the book comes off as.... very British lol

If you're a lay person looking to learn about the underlying theory of CBT, then the first few chapters are really useful, but a large portion of the book is the implication of CBT from a therapeutic perspective, so some parts weren't as useful for the average Joe. The middle chapters about cognitive approach to anxiety and depression are also very informative.

I'm looking forward to starting my HI-CBT training soon and couldn't resist doing some reading in anticipation! Now my book's colourfully filled with different highlights, and it's already got me inspired and excited for what will come in the training. I really appreciated the different client examples it frequently gave, to put things in context.

I imagine it will be a very useful reference as I start training and also when working clinically.

As far as textbooks go, this one was fairly informative but very poorly written. Structurally, this could’ve been much stronger and the writing style could’ve been much more concise and engaging without losing any clarity. There was a significant amount of redundancy. My brain hurts.

A surprisingly easy to digest therapist's guidebook to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. The F.A.Q sections were especially wonderful and to the point. The definitive go-to book for anyone interested in CBT.

This is a go to book for anyone studying CBT, it can be very dry but sometimes dry can be beneficial in the long haul.
