Margret Elizabeth Rey (May 16, 1906 – December 21, 1996), born Margarete Elisabeth Waldstein, was (with her husband H. A. Rey), the co-author and illustrator of children's books, best known for their Curious George

Although she was born in Germany, she fled to Brazil early in her life to escape Nazism. While there, she met her future husband Hans (who was a salesman and also from Germany). They married in 1935 and moved to Paris, France that same year.

While in Paris, Hans's animal drawings came to the attention of French publisher, who commissioned him to write a children's book. The result, Rafi and the Nine Monkeys, is little remembered today, but one of its characters, an adorably impish monkey named Curious George, was such a success that the couple considered writing a book just about him. Their work was interrupted with the outbreak of World War II. As Jews, the Reys decided to flee Paris before the Nazis seized the city. Hans built two bicycles, and they fled Paris just a few hours before it fell. Among the meager possessions they brought with them was the illustrated manuscript of Curious George.

The Reys' odyssey brought them to the Spanish border, where they bought train tickets to Lisbon. From there they returned to Brazil, where they had met five years earlier, but this time they continued to New York, New York. The books were published by Houghton Mifflin in 1941, though certain changes had to be introduced because of the technology of the time. Hans and Margret originally planned to use watercolors to illustrate the books, but since they were responsible for the color separation, he changed these to the cartoon-like images that continue to feature in each of the books. (A collector's edition with the original watercolors was recently released.)

Curious George was an instant success, and the Reys were commissioned to write more adventures of the mischievous monkey and his friend, the Man in the Yellow Hat. They wrote seven stories in all, with Hans mainly doing the illustrations and Margret working mostly on the stories, though they both admitted to sharing the work and cooperating fully in every stage of development. At first, however, Margret's name was left off the cover, ostensibly because there was a glut of women already writing children's fiction. In later editions, this was corrected, and Margret now receives full credit for her role in developing the stories.

Margret and her husband moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1963, in a house close to Harvard Square. Following her husband's death in 1977, Margret continued writing, and in 1979, became a Professor of Creative Writing at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. Starting in 1980, she also began to collaborate with Alan Shalleck on a series of short films featuring Curious George and more than two dozen additional books.

In 1989 Margret Rey established the Curious George Foundation to help creative children and prevent cruelty to animals. In 1996, she made major donations to the Boston Public Library and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She was also a long-time supporter of the Longy School of Music. The Reys spent twenty summers in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, to enable H.A. Rey to better observe the stars for his astronomy writing. They became an integral part of the Waterville community and their legacy is honored by The Margret and H.A. Rey Center and the Curious George Cottage located there.

Dr. Lena Y. de Grummond, a professor in the field of library science (specializing in children's literature) at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss. contacted the Reys in 1966 about the university's new children's literature collection. H.A. and Margret made a donation of a pair of sketches at the time. In 1996, after Margret's death, it was revealed in her will that the entire literary estate of the Reys were to be donated to the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection at Southern Miss.

My 3 year old begged me for “just one more” until we ended up reading the entire book in one sitting. ❤️

The majority of the stories are formulaic Curious George adventures, but the last is a bizarre dream that George has where he becomes a giant Monkey. The story is surreal, melancholy, and slightly chilling.

Great children's stories with charming illustrations; however, I feel that the publishers were misleading. The way it is presented by Houghton Mifflin, "The new adventures of Curious George" by Margret and H.A. Rey, as it says on the cover, they are not being very clear that these stories are actually written and illustrated "in the style" of Margret and H.A. Rey. The discerning parent will notice that the stories are formulaic and lack those endearing qualities of the originals. It comes close though, and the illustrations are almost indistinguishable from the originals. The book is a very attractive hardback with glossy pages, containing 8 stories that are shorter than the ones that the Rey's wrote (many parents complained that they were too long).

The third collection of Curious George stories that I got for my son, who was quite addicted to the Curious George books for a while there, is this one, The New Adventures of Curious George. I'm quite glad he no longer wants to read them constantly, as they are hard to read as an adult - I don't mean that they're difficult stories, but that the way they're written really makes you sleepy. Kids love these stories, and they teach them a lot, but unlike so many other picture books or stories, Curious George stories don't really have anything in them for adults.

The stories in this collection are:
Curious George and the Chocolate Factory
Curious George and the Puppies
Curious George Makes Pancakes
Curious George Feeds the Animals
Curious George Goes to a Movie
Curious George and the Hot Air Balloon
Curious George in the Snow
Curious George's Dream

We have Curious George and the Puppies as a standalone, too, so I've read that one countless times now! Curious George is perfect reading for two-year-olds, and I'm sure will be great when my boy starts reading on his own too. The stories are composed of simple sentences, include some complicated long words, and also utilise the illustrations to fill in the gaps. Curious George stories are like using training wheels. And he's a playful, curious, mischievous monkey that kids really enjoy reading about. It's quite amazing what this little monkey gets up to!

5* art
5* stories

This is a collection of 8 stories:

C.G. Goes To a Chocolate Factory
C.G. and the Puppies
C.G. Makes Pancakes
C.G. Feeds the Animals
C.G> Goes to a Movie
C.G. and the Hot Air Balloon
C.G. in the Snow
and
C.G.'s Dream

It must be said that one of the things Squirt enjoys about this is looking at the pictures of each book cover that is shown on the back of this collection, and choosing which one he wants to hear. In fact, the first thing he does for any book is look at the back cover for pictures of the rest of the series (if there is a series). Little details like this add appeal. Not that George needs added appeal. Squirt has been watching the shows and having me read the stories for what seems like ages now. He loves that George continually goes where he is not supposed to go. He loves that George makes things (this is mostly from the show). He absolutely relates to being in trouble all the time for simply being curious. Myself? I have trouble with the Man with the Yellow Hat. That guy should NOT be allowed to have a monkey.

One book contains eight short stories. I want to have a monkey as a pet.

Dear Curious George
You are so cute! I can buy so many banana-cream in chocolates for you.
You did a good thing by bringing a dog from the animal shelter.
I didn't know that Curious George was so good at making pancakes.
You fed the animals at the zoo because you were kind.
Animals don't get sick because of love. Don't worry about it.
Sit tight with delicious popcorn in movie theater, George!
Winter sports are so much fun! Sliding on the snow on a pizza plate was a Good Idea!
George, you are small and cute. Stay where you are.

Finished the rest with my brother. Very cute stories and they remind me of being read to when I was little. My brother also really likes them which I think is really cute. My favorites are Curious George goes to a Chocolate Factory and Curious George Makes Pancakes.

These new adventures are shorter than the original ones. Only okay. But it’s something different - the adults were tired of reading the original stories over and over and over again (Alex could tell us in advance what was going to happen as well- not a bad thing but we were tired).

Can’t go wrong with Curious George. Although the original stories are a bit harsher, these newer versions are more kid friendly with less negative imagery (such as hunters and prisons).

This is our second collection of Curious George's "new" adventures. Once again, I'm not really clear on who wrote these, but they are in the style/spirit of the original adventures by Margret and H.A. Rey. As to be expected, George's curiosity gets him into trouble in a variety of ways, but he is always looking to make things right and help out where he can. Though, really, by now I am wondering why the Man with the Yellow Hat leaves him alone so often because that's when the mischief always starts!

In this follow-up anthology to “A Treasury of Curious George,” George “helps” out in a chocolate factory à la Lucille Ball, locates a lost puppy, makes pancakes at a fair, visits the zoo, goes to a movie, rides a hot air balloon, learns to ski, and dreams about life being as big as King Kong. My son can recite the hot air balloon story verbatim. This anthology never fails to delight.

The Hebrew version is called: הרפתקאותיו החדשות של ג'ורג' הסקרן.

I think these stories and the illustrations that accompany them are adorable. Plus, Maddie is completely engrossed by them. I think I must own this book eventually. Maddie reminds me of Curious George in a lot of ways, which is maybe why she likes the stories so much. She is a very good girl, and always very curious :)

We were given this book as a gift. I really like this particular collection of curious George stories- some of them are really lame, but not these. I really like the pictures and the binding seems very sturdy. My 23-mo-old son loves to get out "George" and then pick a story based on the pictures in the table of contents. He loves hearing these over and over.

The tried and true format: george gets into mischief, he creates a dilemma, then he helps solve it and then is declared a hero. I have a slight issue with the message. This is a collection of new Curious George stories. So they are not the original stories but they are good. So far we've read one about pancakes and one about a chocolate factory (generously borrowed from I love Lucy)..

A lovely edition of George's many adventures ... visits to a chocolate factory, the movies, and the zoo, just to name a few. Brief biography included, which shares more about the Reys and their collaborative storytelling and illustration efforts that have created classics.

Setting Eliot up for some adventures of his own. Thought of Elise today ... stay curious!

Enjoyed by my son and I alike. Structurally, all the stories start the same way. Monkey is curious, makes a mistake or makes life harder for someone he is trying to help, everyone is good natured about it. A little diversity would be nice. However, the detail in the illustrations is really great. Bed time favorite.

I never tire of this cheeky monkey and his propensity to get in and then out of trouble. I love his sense of adventure and his relationships with the people with whom he intreacts. I love reading with my kids, not just Rey's words, but also George's interpretation of situations through his body language and facial expression.

We love George in my house, and my son was so happy with this collection. I loved the lessons it teaches and how they are so clearly indicated to a young mind. I loved the illustrations ad my son was happy that they were just like the ones in his previous George books.

Well, it's a formula that worked. George makes trouble, but the trouble ends up making something good happen. Not exciting, and perhaps not the best moral, but they're good enough.
