Jean Van Hamme, is a Belgian novelist and comic book writer. He has written scripts for a number of Belgian/French comic series, including Histoire sans héros, Thorgal, XIII, Blake and Mortimer, Lady S and Largo Winch.
XIII gets embroiled with some rebels in a made up Latin American country when someone tells him a story about his missing 6 years of his life. He’s known by yet another identity and his “wife” is soon to be executed. XIII has to be the most gullible person alive. The amount of plot contrivances in this series can be frustrating as well.
XIII is given information that his wife is kept in captivity in South America. Trying to find out more about himself he goes there and as expected not everything goes well.
I wont go into more details due to the spoilers but let just say that past finds XIII where he least expects.
Part #1 of a standalone story arc.
Highly recommended to all fans of action thrillers.
Interesting continuation of XIII's story. It's a new story arc, so it is mainly a setup for things to come. But it is still good, with good artwork as well. Recommended.
Album nine of this seemingly never ending series, and the weakest one so far.
In this story we're sent off to South America as XIII thrown into yet another classic thriller setting, this time with a banana republic, jungles and freedom fighters as a colourful background. The story is again too intricate and full of logical holes, as van Hamme desperately tries to connect all the dots. A minor character from an earlier story arc just happens to turn up in the same little fictitious South American country as XIII, and a cliche ridden secretive group that seems to be running big things in the world is introduced.
I'm sure that all of these things, and the action and the every beautiful women were enough to make XIII popular among the predominantly young male readers when it was initially run in Spirou, but to me it all feels a bit stale.
XIII leaves the US and ends up in South America where he gets into it with a rebel group ALA cuban revolutionarys. Turns out he lived in South America for a six month period and may have married the head revolutionarys daughter... but since he cant remember anything since he has amnesia. She is incarcerated on an island gulag with other political prisoners and XIII decides to free them when he gets captured himself.
