When war shatters the fragile peace of 1803 between France and England, Alexandria must get her niece home safe. But escaping from Paris will not be easy, for Bonaparte has ordered the arrest of all English—and there is an added complication. The man she once loved, the man for whom she almost gave up everything, the man who left her branded "Lady Scandal", needs her help. Although she has not seen Paxten Marsett in years, she recognizes her former lover's voice when he hides in her coach. But can they overcome a past left bitter by betrayals and find a path to something new?
Half French and half English, Paxten Marsett has never felt at home anywhere. And now he is unwelcome in France due to a misunderstanding with a general's wife. But in fleeing France, he comes across the one woman he has never forgotten—the woman who once scorned him. Will he use this chance to seduce her into falling in love with him again so that this time he might break her heart—or will he find himself seduced instead by an old love?

Lady Alexandria and her young niece Diana are visiting Paris when Napoleon (who is just a Consul at this point in time) declares war on Britain and orders every English person in France to be arrested. The girls are high-tailing it for the coast when they are suddenly joined by Paxten Marsett, Alexandria's old lover, who is also being chased by soldiers but for different reasons.
I liked it. I liked the characters. Unlike other HR's, Alexandria is a mature woman with a grown son. She has a good head on her shoulders. I even like Diana, the young niece. While a bit flitty (she's only 17 after all), she has gumption and even takes on the enemy armed only with a poker. Oh yeah, and then there's Paxten. Yeah, he's there.
If I had any complaint it would be with the climax and the unbelievably convenient appearance of some characters. That was kind of pushing things.
Sadly I don't remember much of this book despite reading it three days ago. I think Heyer has ruined me for these Regency romances. I do remember that the Man was angry at the Lady for not running away with him and ruining her reputation and that of her young son. I think that's pretty lame for a hero, no?
Lady Sandal and her niece Diana come home from a night out to find their home ransacked and a maid hiding, crying and in fear that the French military have returned. The maid explains what has happened and now Lady Sandal and Diana must flee France as war has been declared between England and France.
I have read this book before and I gave it four stars. I don’t know why. Hero was a ne’er-do-well and it was never explained why she was so enamored of him.
I enjoyed this Regency. The characters were well-drawn and the hero was more interesting and more of a rounded person than many of the usual heroes in this genre. What let the story down for me was the reason why the hero and heroine split up in the first place. It felt a bit inadequate, which left me thinking that the heroine hadn't really cared enough in the first place.
This is quite an adventure taking place when Napoleon ordered all English arrested. The story is about a Lady and her niece escaping for their lives. Along the way they meet up with an old lover who helps them.
