The third side-splittingly funny book in a series for very brave readers
Well, that old roo-de-lally Mr Gum and the hideous Billy William the Third are once more mucking things up for everyone. They're a-schemin' and a-hatchin' an' making their bad plans up on Goblin Mountain. And why? Because they're raising up an army of goblins to stink up the town of Lamonic Bibber once and for all! Can the brave travelers (the wise old man Friday O'Leary and the small girl Polly) make it past the Three Impossible Challenges of Goblin Mountain and save the town from a fate worse than something very bad indeed? In an epic tale of courage, valor, and plain idiocy only one thing is sure: The truth is a lemon meringue!
Andy Stanton lives in North London. He studied English at Oxford but they kicked him out. He has been a film script reader, a cartoonist, an NHS lackey and lots of other things. He has many interests, but best of all he likes cartoons, books and music (even jazz).
One day he’d like to live in New York or Berlin or one of those places because he’s got fantasies of bohemia. His favourite expression is ‘Good evening’ and his favourite word is ‘captain’. Andy has now written more than one book, but less than twenty.
The brave small girl Polly, wise old man Friday O'Leary and gingerbread man come nature teacher Alan Taylor climb the mysterious Gobin Mountain, face the Three Impossible Challenges and solve the mystery of the missing children of Lamonic Bibber.
Me and my 7 year old daughter completely loved this audio book. Stanton's hilarious text is brilliantly augmented by the BBCs sound effects, Stanton's voicing of the different characters and the disgusting goblin songs.
this book is very funny!! i found my self almost bursting with laughter!! as i do with all the others as well. i particularly like friday oleary when he says "THE TRUTH IS A LEMON MERINGUE!!" and "BREAD BIN!!" haha c:
I'm just going to randomly review the third book in a series when I haven't done any of the others. Mr Gum was one of my favourite book series growing up. I found it hilarious then and at 21 still do & proud of it. I read this one to my seven year old sister a bit out of nowhere as we had a bookmark in #2 after starting it ages ago, after finishing that a couple of days ago she requested we continue. Before I convinced her to finish #2 she told me she doesn't like Mr Gum because it's disgusting but once we got started she didn't want me to stop.
This instalment is as great as always. Disgusting, yep. Ridiculous, absolutely. Funny, FOR SURE. Polly & Friday doing a 10k piece jigsaw while the witch is chasing them is a stand out moment of the entire series and catching the rabbit to cook still makes me laugh out loud. The Spirit of the Rainbow is so much fun and Polly and Friday are such wonderful heroes.
"I promised to come to your aid when the horn of Q'zaal Q'zaal was blown- and here I am." "Thank you, sir" said Friday graciously. "But there is one thing I have to ask. Couldn't you have come a bit sooner?" "Old man," explained the boy. "When you blew that horn I was in Newcastle, staying over at my cousin's."
I tip my hit to the author . . . this series is fantastically funny. I just can't fault them. It's the perfect mixture of silly, silliness and sillinessness that makes them such great books. The only thing I that would make them better is if it made me a nice cup of tea.
If I'm ever in the middle of a stuffy, adult book and my brain is slowly trickly down my neck from sheer boredom, I know exactly what to. Pick up the next Mr. Gum book and start giggling!
⭐️ 5/10 (But its a children’s book so, definitely higher if we’re adding that to the rating).
📝 This book was ridiculous in the best way. I had to read it for school. It was funny and ironic. I could definitely see children enjoying this, but also parents/teachers reading it. It was filled with humor and adventure. I also loved how it ended abruptly. Poor Friday, never got to sing a song 🥲 Definitely a book that can be read in a classroom, but for young children.

We laughed and laughed. Very few children's books stay in the memory like these, and have become family favourites. Great to read aloud, really interesting illustrations that generate imaginings beyond the story.
3.5 / 75 ⭐️ Really fun and quite descriptive. It is slightly different the the first two books but in my opinion it is better! It got me out of my book slump and this book made me notice how much I love lamonic bibber. But i didn’t like the ending that much.
A fantastically wacky book which my son absolutely adored. He laughed a lot and would not let me stop each night as we read this as part of his accelerated reader initiative in his school. Loved it.
Literary non sequiturs and situationalist nonsense - like a slapdash Roald Dahl, but somehow still perfect for seven year olds. Not quite as amazing as Book 1.
