Wild Wild Widow

Rate this book
Rebecca Chatham is no stranger to scandal. She and her husband delighted in shocking San Francisco society with their sexual exploits, not hard to do in 1888. But now her husband is dead. He left her penniless, forced to live under her wealthy father’s thumb. While searching for a protector, she once again becomes the focus of society gossip, and her father exiles her to her brother’s ranch in Central California.

Rebecca is miserable, until she meets the very handsome, very virile ranch foreman Judah Merrill. A real cowboy. Though she’s aware of their differences in status, she pursues him with a single-mindedness, until he catches her in the creek (and in the barn and on horseback). But what happens when she falls in love with him? Will he accept her wild wild heart?

Wild Wild Widow is my second book by Emma Jay and a thoroughly invigorating one at that. Emma Jay has a talent for creating beautiful characters and making their flaws work in a story that makes their inevitable happily ever after that much sweeter in the end.

Wild Wild Widow caught my eye when Emma Jay's page on Facebook announced this book's release on Amazon. From the cover that first reeled me in to the blurb that signalled an unusual historical romance in the making, I had no qualms about loading up my IPad with this novella and indulging! And indulge I did because from page 1, the heat factor is on together with a hero and heroine who inevitably managed to surprise me as I delved deeper into the story.

This novella starts at an unusual point. 8 months widowed Lady Rebecca Chatham is about to invite the advances of a man who is willing to take her under his wing as his mistress. Rebecca's marraige to her deceased husband Nathan Chatham had been one of grand passion and adventure, the precarious positions in which these two were found during different points of their marriage the highlight of San Francisco's gossip mongrels.

As a result, Rebecca finds herself banished to the homestead of his brother Gabriel and his wife Beatrice as punishment. Rebecca is determined that her father would have to forgive her enough to take her back before long because she is not an outback kind of girl who would thrive in the blazing heat of Central California.

But when Rebecca encounters Judah Merrill, her brother's foreman whose twinkling brown eyes and lazy charm instantly draws her to him, in Judah Rebecca finds a reason to stay and a reason to make a better person out of herself. And for the first time in her life, Rebecca finds that she is drawn to a man whose integrity and honesty shines through him, a man who could cherish her for who she is rather than making a spectacle out of their shared passion for each other.

Judah is not convinced that he would be able to provide Rebecca with the sort of adventurous life that her husband had provided her with, though the sultry kisses and forbidden caresses that are shared between them gets past the defences around his heart and catches him unawares before their affair runs its course.

Rebecca is the one whose surprised when she starts to yearn for far more than just her cowboy's blazing caresses that makes her world spin out of control. But before long, both Rebecca and Judah's passion for one another throws Rebecca's past in her face until Judah takes the chance of his life to convince the woman who is suited for him in every way to share their lives together until death does them apart.

Though a short story, Wild Wild Widow is an intense one both in the physical and emotional sense. The wild lovemaking that Rebecca and Judah share is out of this world hot and tender at the same time that just calls to something deep inside of the reader. Rebecca's character is one that is hard to define as she is someone who defies all the rules of the conventional society and lives to be her own person. Restless is how I would define her, making her yearn for things that lands her in trouble. And in Judah's arms does the restlessnless find its cure and a love so beautiful that I found myself smiling all through their adventures.

Judah is a man who comes across as laid back and gentle mannered. But beneath that exterior lies a man who is capable of making your toes curl inward and your breath hitch as he turns up the blazing heat factor on. And the way he treasures each kiss and caress and turns even the most torrid encounters into something worth being savored is the best part about him.

Emma Jay has definitely spun a winner with this one. A tale that is different from most of the historical romances that line your e-book shelves and a romance and love that shines through at the turn of each page. Wonderful way to pass your time if you have an hour to spare!

Highly recommended!

Momentous Scenes

- When Rebecca is found in a precarious position with a man - equal parts horror and hilarity

- Seduction scene at the stream - Yowza!

- The moment Judah takes Rebecca against the horse in the pouring rain - Pass me the ice please!

This is one hot novella, a sweet and sexy western historical.

I bought this over a year ago and I found it floating around on my Kindle.

This story is about a young widow, Rebecca Chatham who, in my opinion, was born before her time. Her husband left her penniless and she starts the book forced to live with her father. As it was back in the day, women lived under the rule of men. She gets caught getting somewhat frisky in public with another man and her father exiles her to her brother's Central Cali ranch.

She is generally disapproved of by her brother and his wife. His wife is particularly harsh and assigns her the full-time job of caring for their children, and unfamiliar task that she adapts to.

She is befriended by her brother's ranch foreman and cowboy Judah. They start spending some time together and you know where things are headed. After the sun goes down they are soon getting it on at the creek, on horseback, in the barn, whenever and where ever they can get to sneak away. They are not only lovers but also friends. Judah is from Montana and a widower, with dreams of having his own ranch someday.

If you enjoy a hot western romance with a HEA, this is a nice quick read. Emma writes a sympathetic heroine and a hot honey of a man/love interest.

My rambling thoughts, after reading the book:
There is no shame for a young woman in her 20's to want to be sexually active, especially one who was accustomed to a healthy sex life, and this book reminded me how dangerous that could be just 100+ years ago. This book also got me thinking about the general lack of freedom women had, and how they could be forced by family to do things against their will, lack of property ownership rights, at the mercy of others, etc. Pretty scary, because Rebecca was treated as some wanton woman, and all she was was a woman who wanted to get on with her life.

Hot,short read. Rebecca wasn't afraid to go after Judah. I'm glad she saw the error of her ways with the dress at the small wedding. Good little story.

Satisfying

This book did have all the elements needed to create a Western Romance. I found it a most enjoyable read.

Beautiful love story!

I loved the raw intimacy of the love making. I also loved how the children were entered into the story and became a refreshing relief for the star.

Wild, Wild Widow: A Western Romance by Emma Jay is an erotic historical romance set in a time when high society single women didn't go on dates without a chaperone. I'm so glad that chaperones were few and far between in late 19th century California, however, because that would have really spoiled the fun between the young Rebecca Chatham and the older Judah Merrill.

After scandalizing the family in San Francisco, the young widow, Rebecca, is sent to live with her married brother and his family. She thinks this is a fate worse than death until she meets the foreman of her brother's ranch, Judah, a sexy widower.

I was sucked into Rebecca's story from page one. The writing is fluid, simple, and direct. I'll share the first two paragraphs here (you can see more in Amazon's free sample):

Rebecca Chatham took her seat in the box overlooking the stage at the opera house. Murmurs from the elite of San Francisco society rippled through the room and she saw more than one gaze turn away when she made eye contact. Accustomed to the treatment, she lifted her chin and cast a small smile to her escort. Neville Frost was younger than she by three or four years, and an interesting mix of sophistication and anxiety. He'd been taught all the niceties of society but didn't appear to have put them to use.

He sat beside her on a velvet seat in his family's box, closer than was strictly proper, but she understood his intent. This was no courtship leading to marriage. He planned to ask her to be his mistress....

Obviously an independent woman, Rebecca Chatham is a victim of her time, when society had strict rules for how women should conduct themselves. Still, in the beginning, I wasn't sure how much I really sympathized with her. She seemed spoiled and selfish. She came around, though, after she had to endure some hard realities on her brother's modest California cattle ranch.

And then there was Judah Merrill, a cowboy widower from Montana who had never met a woman like Rebecca. Theirs isn't love at first sight, but when it takes off, hold onto your hats because it's not a sweet, bashful glance here and a soft peck there. It's magnetic and raw and irresistible. I give it 3.5 bucks out of 5 for frequent, explicit, graphic love scenes plus a half cow-hop for a mild bondage scene.

The only thing that failed with this novelette was my ability to put it down when it was time to go to bed. I recommend you have a cool glass of spring water with this, because you'll need to put out a fire or two before you're finished reading.

Rebecca Chatham a young widow forced to return back to her fathers home is caught in an indelicate position with her soon to be protector finds herself cast from her fathers home in the middle of San Francisco society in the 1800's; shipped of to her brothers rich in central California.

She meets her brother Gabriel's Forman Judah Merrill and soon embarks in an affair with him, behind the backs of her very stuffed shirt brother and his even worse wife.

This book was good plenty of loves scenes , really want to give it more stars but just felt I was shorted than it should of been and the ending was disappointing I expected more ... Drama. Overall a good book and quick read.

A good story but a little short. This could have been a great book if the author put more to it and expanded the story a little. The ending could have been more exciting but instead there was no fight or begging or anything. It really shouldn't have been called a erotic romance even though there was sex, it wasn't descriptive enough. But against all my complaining, it was a decent book that I am glad I read even though I don't plan on reading it again.

I loved the premise of this historical romance as those are my favorite genre. Jay writes a beautiful story full of descriptive moments but in this one... she refers to certain moments (Judah being a great ranch hand) but the elaboration is missed. I would have loved to have seen more character build up of the past.

All in all the story was great, Jay tied in many loose ends and gave me an afternoon of fantasy and love. Kudos

A typical romance, but a good page-turner nonetheless. The story speaks of a widow, deprived of male companionship, and her need to adjust to ranch life. If you're ever in need of a saucy read, this book will do just fine. The endign could have been worked on a bit more, and if the book had been a little longer, I think it would have done even better. As it was, though, it was not a disappointing read.

Widow Rebecca Chatham flaunts convention the way I think many of us secretly wish we could. Irrepressible, her ways don’t change just because she’s been banned to her brother’s isolated California ranch. Her shocking habits soon seduce Judah Merrill, foreman of the ranch. Playful and secretive, the sexual interactions transform the relationship into real changes in the characters. Fast, fun read.

He turned her around. "Hold onto the saddle."

Fun combination of western, romance and erotica. The heroine is strong, yet vulnerable, and matures enough in this short story to deserve her HEA. The hero is a typical stoic cowboy, but in all the right ways.

Some historical background that can give you glimpse of how people used to live. Story ok, quite a lot of steamy scenes (that is why it is called erotic).

Meh

It wasn't as interesting as it could have been. The story was relatively slow and I did not care much for the outcome.
