The Diary of a Pug series is an inviting early chapter book series that kids aged 6-9 will find amusing and adorable. There are enough illustrations for a beginning chapter book reader to feel welcomed, and not overwhelmed. The text is broken up into small bits so it seems less daunting, and there's enough detail in the text to tell a story but it's not overly wordy. The characters of Bella and her Pug Bub (short for Baron Von Bubbles, of course) find themselves in all sorts of fun adventures. Every book includes a brief introduction woven into the text of the story that explains Bub's backstory and the origin of his name and how his relationship with Bella began. It's a simple and cute way to give the reader some exposition without making it clunky. This is particularly inviting to a reader who doesn't have access to Book #1, but still wants to begin reading the series. Beach Pug is a fun romp at the beach with Bella, Bub, and their besties Jack and Luna. There's a dog surfing contest, lots of water (Bub's nemesis), and a treasure map! What more could you ask for in a kid's chapter book? Make sure you pack this one for your next summer beach trip. Surf's up!
Bubbles and his owner, Bella, and their friends Luna and her owner, Jack, head to the beach for a week. Bella really wants to enter the dog surfing competition, but Bubbles’ fear of water is getting in the way. He refuses to even try. He would much rather spend time hunting for ice cream treasure with Luna. His refusals make Bella so sad, though, should he give it a try?
A cute beach adventure with very accurate pirate seagulls. (Why hasn’t anyone noticed they are pirates before?! They steal food so regularly, it’s obvious! Of course, we humans can’t hear them talk so there’s that.) The ending of the book provides a way for all 4 friends to enter a less-wet competition that they can excel at and use their creative skills in.
Notes on content: Language: None Sexual content: None Violence: Some crabs threaten to pinch and Luna has been pinched before so she’s really wary of them. Ethnic diversity: Jack and Bella have light skin tones. Other people on the beach display a variety of skin tones. LGBTQ+ content: None specified. Other: A dog fears water.
A chapters book but for little kids, it was funny, even to me, held my four year old’s attention, and told a great story. Made me want to live in Australia and write books to be honest. Great author.
I loved the book. I loved that they found out friendship is the most precious treasure you can ever find. I also loved that bub just went surfing for Bella because he didn’t want to let her down.

Bub goes to the beach. Which is a great idea to take your dog who hates water to a place with tons of water... anyway, Bella wants to enter a surfing contest with Bub.
