Infinitum Government Code 3.18.21.512: Genetic Experimentation Shall Be Strictly Forbidden

No job is more arduous than that of Rehab Guard—those appointed to guard the many and varied prisoners within the Infinitum Government, the ruling power of a vast interplanetary alliance. To be a Rehab Guard requires very specific qualifications and years of specialized training. It is brutal, dangerous, and often thankless job—and there is nowhere else Sean would rather be. It keeps him safe, his deadly secret safely buried, and gives him a life as close to normal as he will ever come.

Until the day new prisoner arrives, a genetically-engineered Draconis with the ability to ‘match’ to a suitable magics-capable individual and boost his power. Convicted of murder, he is sentenced to Rehab for life, and no one has ever escaped from Rehab. But no one counted on the prisoner matching with Sean, who as a human should not be capable of magics…

I don’t read much Science-Fiction in the M/M genre, not because there is a lack of it; but because it’s never my first choice when it comes to reading. When I started Kidnapped I had no idea what to expect. The blurb had me thinking of a different plot in my head.I thought it was gonna be about a man who falls in love with his captor, because they have a bond and that bond cannot be denied. I have to say that Ms Derr blew all my fancy dreaming out of the water *and fancy dreaming it was*.

Kidnapped is the first bookin a series that I find highly complex, and I think that has to do with all the information in the story. Though it was really slow for me in the beginning, and there was a substantial amount of info pile-up (though that could just be all me). It picked up quite nicely.

Sean is a Rehab guard apart of the Infinitum Government (there powers know no bounds). To be a rehab guard you have to be the best of the best because they deal with the most dangerousof beings. Being rehab is all Sean loves, and with one prisoner all that comescrumbling. It seems the new prisoner is a Draconis being brought in on murder charges, and the shit is about to hit the proverbial fan because Sean is his match.

What is a Draconis you ask?Well they are genetically engineered species whose sole purpose was to give power to who they matched with. So now Sean and his match share some pretty amazing magic, teleportation and healing. Now Sean and his Draconis Mendel are fugitives who are on mission to save the Draconis race (if I talk about that this review will never end).

This story contains many characters with so many different plot lines. As I said really slow for me in the beginning, but it picks up with mystery and entertaining characters. It's like a plethora of information which at often times was somewhat overwhelming, but the author keeps it flowing well and every scene developed to its full potential.

What I really liked is that being matched/bonded doesn’t mean that a romantic relationship will be formed. This is somewhat unusual because whenever bonds are formed in books, it always lead to sex and happy ever after, well not here. There is sex, but it’s a development story so all that lovey dovey played a huge second.

Overall, I really liked it. I look forward to reading the second book because all the Draconis drama is far from over. There is also a very pretty villain who is quite crazy but so very pretty. I am super interested and will be reading the sequel Meant to Be.

This book took me in a new direction, with a relatively new author. I have only read one book by this author (Treasure) and I was just barely able to finish it. Reading this book was a huge leap of faith, and I'm glad I took that leap.

I have read countless other Sci-Fi books and watched hours and hours of sci-fi shows. Honestly, and I don't say this lightly, Kidnapped was on par with some of the great sci-fi novels I've read. Traditionally m/m romance are incredibly formulaic, full of instant love, gratuitous sex, or overwhelming angst. I'm not saying that those are bad things, but sometimes you need more.

The world imagined by Derr was well thought out (not easy to do when you are developing an entirely new set of rules and cultures. There were no blatant holes or missing background information. The cultures were planned and execute incredibly well.

To those people who rated it low, I wonder how much science fiction they have read. Sci-Fi is about what could be possible and perspectives change to meet the needs of the author. I do agree that the blurb put a little too much focus on the wrong characters, but hey ... they were there about 50% of the time.

This is not what many would call a m/m romance. This is a well written sci-fi story that has m/m relations instead of the more traditionally seen m/f in science fiction.

I enjoyed this book but the blurb that actually made me buy the book in the first place is pretty irrelevant as the characters mentioned in it are only a fairly minor part of the whole story. Really the blurb should have centered on Cyan and Einn whose story this book is mostly about and it makes me wonder now I've finished the book whether the blurb writer actually read the story or just the first chapter. And, this is why I didn't really enjoy the story as much as I should have. I was introduced to Sean and Mendel at the beginning of the book and then the story seemed to go off on a tangent and focus on Cyan and Einn. As the blurb focused on Sean and Mendel I kept expecting the story to revert back to them all the time I was reading it and these expectations spoilt the book somewhat for me. Saying that though, I thought Cyan and Einn were far more interesting to read about than Sean and Mendel and all in all this is quite a good sci-fi read but don't buy this book based on the blurb it really has little to do with the whole story at all.

Rehab is a prison planet for notorious criminals overseen by the Infinitum Government. Sean and Cyan are guards at the prison and friends, working closely together. When a new prisoner shows up and escapes with Sean, revealing him to be a magic capable human (and thus making him a renegade now, too), Cyan goes after them. His intent isn't to capture them, though. He needs to let Sean know that his mother is ill. To get there, Cyan makes a deal with a pirate, Einn, to pretend Cyan is a hostage on their ship. Einn comes on a bit strong for Cyan's tastes, but as it is the only way to get to his friend, he decides to grin and bear it. But little does he know there is a much larger plot afoot and there's a chance he may just be playing right into it.

I was disappointed to see that the story here didn't really reflect the blurb. The relationship described there shows up at the beginning but then quickly fades to the background for Cyan's story to be told. And that story's not necessarily a bad one, but it moves really quite slowly and the resolution is a bit too simplistic for me when the world in which it takes place is so full of possibility.

Additionally, I encountered more than a few editing issues with this story, which sadly is not the first time for me with this author and publisher. I don't know that I'd give this a higher rating if those weren't present, but they definitely didn't help at all.

CAUTION: Long Review, Spoilers

Kidnapped is the first book in the Infinitum Government duology by the talented writer Megan Derr. (The "third" book Jewels of Bangkok is a spin-off, set in the same universe but in a different timeline and doesn't relate to the main story.) The story's main conflict is for our heroes to save the Draconis race, a derivative of the Save the World trope. However, Kidnapped ended with a HFN and doesn't conclusively resolve the "save the Draconis" issue till the 2nd book.

The Draconis race is a "genetically engineered race designed by the Coni...to be legal supplements to increase their power." A Draconis will match to a magics-capable person through eye-contact, and then that person and the Draconis will each share their power. Example: Sean can teleport, Mendel can heal. Matched, they both can teleport and heal. But only if they are together! Separate, neither the magics-capable person nor their Draconis can use their power, inherent or shared. Same example: Sean without Mendel nearby can neither teleport nor heal, same thing for Mendel without Sean nearby.

If you're thinking this story uses the Soul Mate trope, you're half right and half wrong. Draconis and their magics-capable, non-Draconis match usually do end up in a romance, but not always.

Kidnapped is told in 3rd POV following mostly from Sean, Mendel, and Cyan's perspectives. If readers are worried about keeping plotlines separate, no worries. At the middle of the story, they all meet and deal with the same crap, i.e. rescuing people, saving a race, fighting the villains, etc — the usual shit heroes have to do.

Initially before everything merge into one single followable plotline, there are three plotlines. FYI, you can read the first 15% of the story on Smashword here.

Plotline 1: Sean is a Rehabber (ultimate prison-keepers/warriors) and he accidentally matched to a Draconis recent-prisoner named Mendel. Readers can read that event of a prologue here for free. Revealed as a magics-capable human, Sean runaway with Mendel...well, after Sean got kidnapped first. Heh.

But wait? Why is being a magics-capable human so bad?

A magics-capable human is a magics-vulnerable human, vulnerable "to all magics—mind control, telepathy, telekinesis, and hundreds upon hundreds more." All humans working in the I.G. are magics-incapable and therefore magics-invulnerable. If humans suddenly evolved into a magics-capable race, then the entire power structure — the I.G. will fall. There would be no personal protection against brainwashing and the like.

Every race but the human race are magics-capable and already knows how to deal with it. Humans, for their part, don't except for being their magics-less self. Sean being a magics-capable human is a small step towards that fearful future.

Plotline 2: Eine and Lark, last two survivors of a vigilante crew, are coerced through poison to kidnap certain important people. They are coerced by a crazy vengeful villain named Jade. Under that dainty beauty of his is an ugly heart of sadism. Jade also happened to be the fraternal twin brother of Cyan leading us to...

Plotline 3: Cyan is a Rehabber, co-worker and best-friend of Sean. He is on the quest to find Sean so that he can bring Sean back home to visit Sean's dying mother before she R.I.P.

And I said before, they all eventually meet and fight the good fight.

Characters of Interest

I was a little miffed at reading Eine and Lark's "adventure" in chapter one after reading about Sean and Mendel in the prologue. I wanted the story to continue with Sean and Mendel's plotline because the prologue had a really good cliffhanger. But I soon got over it.

And soon Cyan became my favorite character in Kidnapped. Cyan eventually joined Eine and Lark's "adventure" after the two vigilantes inadvertently kidnapped Cyan. Oh yeah, before the kidnapping thing happened, before they knew each other, Eine and Cyan had a shag a few hours ago, doing the whole "sex with a stranger" and "sex to release stress" deals. LOL! Memorable quote below.
"I told you, rock spider, it's better to fuck a Rehabber than fuck with one—did you want to test that theory?"
I really like how Cyan, as a Rehabber, could kick butts and smash skulls. Despite Jade accusing Cyan of cowardice, Cyan truly had a take-charge kind of attitude. Once the kidnap incident was resolved with Eine, Cyan didn't mind shagging Eine some more. The story described them, from Lark's dialogue, as having "fuck-me eyes" for each other. LOL!

So the story follows Sean and Mendel as one couple, Eine and Cyan as the other, and just gay Lark as the third wheel. Lark was the weakest character of the main cast in the character development department. I read his personal history and predilections, but I never got to know him as a person. Actually, I'm not sure if Lark can be considered as part of the main cast — the whole matter is debatable.

But in short, Lark's character development wasn't enough to satisfy me. But oh well, this was a small gripe and I was mostly concerned on the two established gay couples.

In Conclusion

Kidnapped was fast-paced and contained more actions than I expected. The story was complex but it wasn't convoluted, it was an easy sci-fi to read. I detected a streak of humor in the story because some of the scenes had me chuckling.

The story is aptly titled because there were a lot of kidnappings happening. Giving Kidnapped three-stars for an I-liked-it.

Note: The blurb is pretty inaccurate and irrelevant to the greater (and true) plot.

As per Megan Derr's style, this was a lovely novel-- fun and enjoyable to read. The world building was intriguing, with an imaginative cast of various races laid out for us and an interesting world was set up with the human run Infinitum Government as the ruling power. Although I did point out the inaccurate blurb, I actually had no problem -- I enjoyed, in fact -- the various romantic plot lines of different couples playing out (instead of just the one mentioned in the blurb). My only complaint is that I wanted an exploration of a greater depth for each romance, I felt like I knew too little of each character and their relationship to be truly satisfied. I also feel that some of the elements of each relationship are very typical of Megan Derr, and perhaps even formulaic and repetitive, however I still enjoyed the constant banter given by each couple, the stupid but cute angsting about little misunderstandings (that always make me snort and smile) and also the plot, which was interesting to follow in itself.

Overall this was a fun Sci-fi romance with solid world building and a captivating character cast but in the end, still fell slightly short for me.

What I liked: the world-building was amazing! People from each planet are unique, each with unique strengths and weaknesses. Each planet has their own sayings and unique words. And the scenes where the universal translator doesn't work for one word cracked me up.

What I didn't like: I really wanted to love these books, and the world-building was amazing enough that I could have. But what makes me fall in love with books are the characters, and we never got to know any one of them well enough for me to do that. These books have more of an ensemble cast than a MC and his love interest. Which was fine, I liked most of the characters well enough. I just didn't feel like I connected with any of them enough.

I still may re-read just to spend more time in this world, but I won't be driven back so I can spend more time with any of the characters.

The writing style was good as always, I like the way Megan sets up her stories but this book didn't grab me as much as I hoped for.
I think this is mainly because I didn't feel connected to the MC's. I still don't know anything about Menkel apart from how he looks like. Also I miss knowing what happened just after Menkel and Sean zapp away on their first meeting. The next thing we see is a moping Sean because Menkel doesn't pay him any attention.

It is Einn that claims the spotlight. To me he felt like the most fleshed out character. As it says this is the first in a series I hope we will see all the guys again in the next book. Because I am left behind with some questions.

Love the world building!

The world building and storyline were very interesting in this book, and perhaps a bit confusing at times too with all the different species, names, planets, starships, etc. I have to agree with another reviewer who had a hard time with the blurb. It was misleading because you believe the story will be primarily about Sean and the Draconis. Yes, Sean and his Draconis match kick off all the action and end it in this story, but the vast majority of the book is really about Sean’s partner Cyan and a random hookup named Einn who comes to mean a lot to him. This is mostly a sci-fi story with a bit of romance to spice things up!

Why put Sean and the Draconis in the blurb, when they only showed up for 1/3 of the book? And we only get Sean's perspective. Needless to say, I had no motivation to read the real mcs' perspective, and the plot failed to capture my attention. The relationship was lackluster as best.

This story feels like what would happen if CLAMP wrote a space opera novel: an assortment of beautiful men pair bonding and having adventures as they struggle to free themselves from the devious plot they've been captured in (and the equally beautiful but outrageously cruel villain who has ensnared them in it). I would definitely recommend it to fans of BL manga/anime; there are points where one can practically picture what the characters would look like animated.

For me, though, there were a few ways the story didn't work. On the romance front: there are two major romantic relationships in the story, and for one of them we see the meeting (a kidnapping) and then skip forward to how the characters are getting along "a term" (two years, I think?) later. I would have really, really liked to see how they went from antagonistic (one is a prison guard and the other is a convicted killer; they have no reason to start on good terms even apart from the kidnapping) to friendly. On the action front: the primary villain is a type that I'm never fond of, the charismatic and manipulative powerful man who is secretly "insane" and "sadistic," and who indulges in obsessively personal cruelty with someone he claims to love. It's a trope that obviously must be working for some people, or it wouldn't be so popular, but I always find it frustrating.

...On the "Laylah, you're in the wrong genre again" front, I can't remember a single female character who did anything of consequence. Unless you count the one who was quietly dying off-screen the whole time the rest of the action was going on. Maybe I'm forgetting someone? I hope I'm just forgetting someone.

On the whole, I really wish I'd enjoyed this more; the blurb made it sound like it was full of my favorite things. Ultimately, though, I think the execution was geared toward a reader with different tastes than mine.

I am becoming a big fan of this author, her quirky humor and lovely romances keep winning me over, she writes simply but with a lot of good angst.

This book was a little different than what i have read of hers so far. LOTS of details, so much that it bogged down the story, which is unusual as she is usually a master at drawing the reader right into another word with minimal world building. Jumping from storyline to storyline like a soap opera, we get a few minutes of each setting, then it jumps to another set, though Cyan seems to be the constant for most of the story. I may be misunderstanding but i sort of got the impression from the forward that this author wrote this earlier and this was a rereleased version. It still dragged a bit, but i've started the second one and already its holding my interest better and is more like the work i've come to expect from Megan Derr.

Good solid three, hoping the rest of the series is even better!

Kidnapped (The Infinitum Government, #1) by Megan Derr

Kidnapped

A plot in the territory of the Infinium Government…

At the Imperial Tower Einn and Lark are carrying out a daring kidnapping. As space pirates the two have a bad reputation, but they are not terrible people. If the truth be known they are unwilling to carry out this whole venture. Meanwhile on the planet Rehab, a prison planet, Cyan and Sean (prison guards) are carrying out a routine, but violent day. Little do they know it, but these four people have future paths that will eventually entwine. All will become caught up in a plot that goes deep into the heart of the Infinitum Government.

While this novel does include magics and pair matching, Megan Derr has varied from her normal genre of fantasy romance to try her hand at science fiction. Also different from her sometimes sweet style, Kidnapped includes tough characters, violent action and rough sex. This book is definitely full of alpha males. Some chapters are from Einn's point of view, some from Cyan's and some from Sean's. This allows for a rich tapestry, with sometimes three, separate plot lines. All this goes to make Kidnapped a very enjoyable novel, and probable one in Derr's 'top' category. The plot moves along nicely, at first intriguing, then exciting the reader at the plot lines converge. The book is generally high energy and will suit those interested in adventure. There is some romance, but that is not the main thrust of the book.

Einn is an interesting character in that he includes shades of light and dark. He is a pirate, but he is more a rogue than a black hearted man. He supposedly genetically cannot feel love, but as the story progresses we wonder if he is the exception to his race. Gay men who like 'hook-ups' will relate to Einn, but he will also challenge them. Cyan has his secrets and as the story progresses it becomes obvious that keeping them will get him deeper and deeper into trouble. Cyan must face his past and conquer it. Sean finds himself out of his usual bearings and in very unfamiliar waters. He must reach beyond his biases and find the good in those he would normally consider his enemy. All three main characters are quite interesting and original. The reader can understand them, but Derr takes us on a journey into new territory with each.

This book is about finding that the bad is not necessarily so bad, that our enemies could actually turn out to be our friends. What it takes is to see the game from the other side. This reversal of perspective is what we often need to give us new ideas and a new dynamic. Similarly the book is about breaking with the past. We can be trapped in one mode that has more to do with what was, rather than with what is. Of course the book is also about meeting challenges full on. We might not all be involved in intergalactic plots, but we must all be heroes in our own lives.

This book involves gay relationships, loose sex and rough sex, so it is not exactly for the conservative or faint of heart.

While this is a complete story, I should mention that there is a sequel, Meant To Be.

I like both science fiction and gay novels, so this book really hit the spot, but my bias being declared I must say that I think that this is generally quite a good novel that could appeal to a fairly wide audience. I am happy to award this book 5 stars.

In the far flung future, humans have ventured out into space and found... aliens. There are multitudes of different kinds of aliens and many of them were created. Many of them also have magics (psionic powers) and sometimes randomly mate with each other, that is bond and share powers. Except for humans. Humans apparently are genetically unable to mate or develop magics. So they become the government face of the Infinitum Government-obstensibly incorruptible by magics. And the worst of the criminals are sent to the Rehab colonies, a series of brutal prisons around the galaxy, also run by humans.
Sean and his best friend Cyan are human Rehabbers, specially trained guardsmen, They work in the toughest Rehab in the galaxy. One day, Mendel, a Draconis convicted of murder arrives at the Rehab and... Everyone is shocked when Sean and Mendel lay eyes on each other and bond. Mendel takes advantage of the confusion, kidnaps Sean, and they disappear.
Two years later Cyan is been asked to find Sean and bring him home to see his mother, who is dying. He sets off on the task, and winds up in the clutches by pirates who are out kidnapping Draconis-mated pairs. This leads him in to a series of gruesome discovers... and Cyan must find a way to stop it all.

There were a lot of interesting ideas in this. Unfortunately, the characters were so flat and practically interchangeable. Little to no development of the main characters, and absolutely none of the bad guys and a somewhat confusing explanation at the end. I was left unengaged. A real disappointment from Derr.

Two stars.

The synopsis does not do justice to the story, the story is more about Cyn and Einn than Sean and Menthal. I enjoyed the story and look forward to the next book.

Nicely updated storyline & details, with so many plot twists going off tangent!

An absolute nail-biting thriller of a mystery involving espionage, intergalactic espionage, and, let's not forget the backstabbing, evil, self-serving tyrants using their high ranking positions to take control of the Infinitum Government itself our main characters are, quite surprisingly, in two pairs (or, they end up that way eventually, initially beginning at opposite sides). Thus, we are treated to two romantic side plots rather than just one that we see evolve in detail. Well done, great storytelling, and simply, brilliant. Deserving of thrice the allowable stars, I'm happy to award these 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟.

4.5 really because this author's world building is always phenomenal. I wish there was more background information though because there were so many different alien species so it would have been really cool to know who's who, what they look like, what they are capable of, and so on and so forth.

Also, in the blurb, it was about Sean and his "match", but really and actually for most of the book, it was all about Cyan and Einn (it was actually really all about CYAN, lol).

That ending was too neat, *side-eyes* - like UMMMM, that's all you're doing to Jade?!?!?!?! LIKE FOR REAL?!?!?!?!

There must be a book 2...

I put off reading this series just like I put of reading Dancing with the Devil book 1 and just like that book I regretted it once I actually read it. This series has aliens. This series has forced bonds. This book has a maniacal, enigmatic, homicidal pretty boy whom no-one can seem to touch and is kinda creepy if you stare at him for too long. The situations are genuine, the outcomes deliciously bleak. Nobody is in a circumstance if his own doing (safe for the homicidal pretty boy, this is all his fault) and almost everyone nearly dies more than once. Perfection. ;-)

I enjoyed this book but didn't love it. This is a rather complicated book with a couple sets of relationships going on and a great deal of politic intrigue. At times I felt a little confuse about the world parameters and how the magic, genetic manipulation, and politics all meshed together. Combined that with trying to build two relationships everything suffers a little bit on getting fleshed out. I feel like this book tried to do way too much at once. There are intriguing ideas and I honestly like both Cyan, Einn, and Sean but I don't feel like I really got to know them well enough.

I read it once and didn't finish it because I was very disappointed. I read it again in hopes that it was my immature tastes, however, I was proven wrong. On top completely following it's own story and shucking the blurb in the garbage, this story severely lacked fluidity. I did not know where to focus. The blurb readied me for something that was not entirely there. Needless to say I was saddened by what I got from this novel, which is nothing.

Aptly named. I think there’s only a handful that didn’t get kidnapped or held hostage. Was a bit iffy at the start coz I really don’t do well with space stories (I blame my dad and his Star Trek obsession). So well rounded characters. I liked Cyan and Sean, both of them not your usual damsels in distress. The rehab guards are violent and know how to fight. Jade was just a creep. Enjoyable story, awkward matches, loyalty and a lot of violence.

I quickly skimmed this sci-fi and fantasy mm romance. It wasn't my cup of tea. A manipulative, sadistic minor official pulls the strings of a revenge conspiracy. This book focuses on his brother and a small group caught up in his plots. Narration bounces around between people and situations, which I didn't like.
Typos: While skimming, I caught one lead that should have been led, head for heard, and hesitated for hesitate.

Good Characters and Fun Adventure

This is a fun book, it was surprise the focus of the book became more complex. The characters have interesting stories and the plot complex. My one quibble was it would be nice to understand how the Infinitum Government came to be. Cyan was the highlight, with strong interaction with Einn.

Interesting

I enjoyed the politics and plot twists in this book, though I didn't really feel like it was clear how Jade and Rall were physically able to do some of the things they did.

Maybe things will be more clear in future books...

Megan Derr = great read and this doesn't disappoint. Heavy on story, light on sex - loved it.
