PROS: There's a ton of recipes in this cookbook. There's a wide variety of different types of recipes to try. The narrative in the book is interesting to read.
CONS: The instructions aren't entirely clear. Not all of the recipes work as expected. Some of the recipes seem generic as opposed to Cuban (like chicken pot pie.)
Nothing against the recipes but this book could really use some colorful photos to make this book more appealing. I had such high hopes for this book but when the book is full of mostly black text with some orange for the dish titles, the book was dull-looking and boring.
I really enjoyed this cookbook particularly because of the history, personal/familial and national, that she gave. I'm making four of these recipes this weekend, so I'll update later on how they turned out, but it looks pretty great. It's mostly pretty casual though, so if you are looking for fancier recipes I'd look elsewhere. There is a great lobster recipe that looks like it could go more high-end.
I love Raquel's books! Her latest doesn't disappoint. I'll be talking with Raquel Roque on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show tomorrow, Oct. 17 3 pm ET. You can listen to the show live or as a podcast here: http://bit.ly/U4EEMd
