In this thrilling debut from award-winning filmmaker Nolan Cubero, a young father must investigate his mysterious new tenant and discover what secrets she's hiding -- while trying to keep his own.
Landlord Gabriel Angueira is trying to put his life back together. His teenage daughter, Megan, was seriously injured in a car accident caused by her own drunk driving, though Gabe blames himself. Since the accident he has spent every day taking care of her, reflecting on his failures as a father, and trying to rebuild his relationship with his ex-wife, Anya. So, when a woman wants to rent the house on Shadow Drive, Gabe hands her the keys without a second thought -- or doing a background check.
Once she moves in, he discovers everything she told him was a lie: her name, her story, her previous address. Gabe knows nothing about this mysterious woman, but she knows a lot about him -- and quickly begins destroying the house from the inside out. Gabe soon realizes she's specifically targeted him and the house on Shadow Drive but has no idea why. Now Gabe must figure out who this woman is before she unearths his family's secrets and takes down the house -- along with his entire life as he knows it.
The main character in this book, Gabriel Angueira, is trying to get his life on track. His teenage daughter Megan was in a life-changing car accident and now he and his ex-wife are trying to work things out. In addition to taking care of his daughter, Gabe owns and manages several rental properties. The house on Shadow Drive belongs to his ex-wife but he is managing the lease. When he agrees to let an older woman move into the house before finalizing the lease or running a background check, he sets a series of unimaginable events into motion that will change his life forever.
The book has short, fast-paced chapters and a sense of foreboding. The author's bio says he is an award-winning filmmaker and it shows in his descriptive writing. I could clearly picture the setting of the book and the events taking place in the story. The pacing and the action of this story really ramp up toward the end building toward an ending to remember. I think fans of Rick Mofina or Linwood Barclay would enjoy this engaging thriller, and I recommend it to all thriller fans. I wold rate it 4.5 stars.
I received an advance copy of this book from the author at no cost, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.
Do you ever read a book and repeatedly think “how can this character be so dumb?” But at the same time you’re totally here and invested in witnessing the shit show…yeah, well, that’s this book for me.
I’m not an expert, but if someone wants to rent a house from me and seems a bit sus…I better make them sign the lease before handing over the keys, amiright?
Well, the landlord of this book had the best of intentions when a strange elderly woman shows up at one of his rental properties with a little too much undisclosed info about him…things take a very strange turn from there and the various twists and turns make for a fun read.
There were so many things I did not see coming and I really love when a book can throw me for a loop like that. The main character may have been a bit doofy, but the author is smart. If you like mysteries and are looking for a unique thriller, grab this one.
I listened to the audio thanks to Libro.fm and the narrator was great.
This is easily the best book I’ve read this year in the thriller genre. Wow wow wow wow. And this a debut? I cannot believe it. Cubero you have found yourself a SUPER fan. From page one this book was instantly captivating. We meet our protagonist, Gabe, at a weird point in his life. His only daughter, Megan, was in a really bad car accident and burned all over. This event caused him and his wife to come back together after divorcing in the years prior. Gabe seems happy and is excited that his family is back together, albeit it may be different. Gabe and his wife are landlords for multiple properties and recently their property on Shadow Drive became vacant. While doing an inspection Gabe is approached by an old woman who needs to move in right away. Stricken by her story of a pregnant daughter, Gabe agrees to let her move in that day without a lease. When coming back to finalize the lease agreement he discovers changed locks, newspaper lining the windows and the dog door blocked off. Alarms begin to ring and Gabe needs to find out what the old lady is doing in there, and quick as there are secrets in Shadow Drive.
As stated, I was instantly encapsulated with this story. From beginning to end this book said “sit down” and I had no choice but to say “I’m sat.” Gabe was a character that will make you scream at the pages. He is downright gullible and naive, but you cannot help but root for him. He is fiercely loyal and protective of his family, much to his own downfall in certain parts, but my god, one of my favorite protagonists to date. This book will hit you with perfectly paced twists and downright SHOCKING reveals. My jaw was left on the floor MULTIPLE times. I am in awe that this is a debut. It’s stated that Cubero is an award winning film maker, and this is not hard to see. The tale he crafted was fantastic and I cannot wait to see what he comes out with in the future.
God the pacing on this was OFFFFFFFF. Intriguing premise but so much faff!! Why at the near finale are we talking about your wife’s favorite cut of steak? This doesn’t come off as good character development but bad writing. Also A LOT of really repetitive sentences. I thought it was going to be okay but it got worse and worse.
disclaimer if you’ve read other reviews by me and are noticing a pattern: You’re correct that I don’t really give starred reviews, I feel like a peasant and don’t like leaving them and most often, I will only leave them if I vehemently despised a book. I enjoy most books for what they are, & I extract lessons from them all. Everyone’s reading experiences are subjective, so I hope my reviews provide enough information to let you know if a book is for you or not, regardless if I add stars or not. The house at 8160 Shadow Drive has a darker history than anyone knows of, especially its owner, father and landlord, Gabriel Anguiera.
Gabe unravels every landlord's nightmare. He unknowingly rents out a property on Shadow Drive to people who lied about their identities and motivations for moving in.
His ex-wife Anya knows more than she's letting on about these people, and his handyman helps him to unfold the endless mysteries behind these people and what lies in that house.
I listened to the audiobook of this, and though the narrator wasn't my favorite initially, he grew on me haha.
I was so frustrated with Gabe - he was SO gullible and I'm not even a real estate girly !!! However, if we had a main character like me in a thriller, they'd never leave the house and the book would be boring so I get why he had to be this way!
Regardless, this book has a lot of twists and turns, suspicious characters, the pace moved quickly, and I was able to complete this in one sitting. If you're a thriller or mystery honey, I think you'd enjoy this one!
Landlord Gabe Angueira is trying to do the right thing by his family after a car crash leaves his teenage daughter, Megan, in a minimally conscious state. Since the accident, he and his ex-wife Anya have gotten back together, and he's moved them both back in his house with him. Relying on his rental properties for his sole source of income, he spends his days taking providing full-time care to Megan, trying to make up for what he considers his failings as her father.
When Gabe rents out the house on Shadow Drive without collecting rent or a signed lease, he does it out of the goodness of his heart. The older woman who shows up unexpectantly to rent the place claims she needs it for herself and her pregnant daughter. Although he's never been stiffed in the past, he can't help but worry about it this time. After all, he doesn't own the house. Anya does. She'll be furious if he doesn't get the money. But little does he know, that's the least of his problems.
When he returns later that day to collect the rent check and get a signature on the lease, he discovers the windows have been covered with newspaper and some strange man has been digging under the deck. Unable to make contact with his new tenant, Diane, in person or by phone, he goes online to try to find her. Realizing he doesn't know her last name, he searches by her phone number and finds her on Facebook. But the post coming from that phone number isn't from Diane. It's from Sheryl, another name that turns out to be fake. Whoever she really is, one thing quickly becomes clear. She doesn't want to rent the house on Shadow Drive. She wants to destroy it -- along with Gabe and his family. It's up to him to stop her by unearthing the truth.
Riveting, unpredictable, and hair-raisingly creepy at times, Shadow Drive by Nolan Cubero is a captivating read for those who prefer thrillers that are a little dark and disturbing. From the very beginning, eerie undertones give the story a The Twilight Zone-vibe in places while plot twists and red herrings keep you trying to figure out what's really going on.
It's hard to believe this is Cubero's debut novel. He makes writing look easy and effortless, which it never is. Every word, every sentence, and every paragraph flows into the next. The dialogue is never stilted -- or is it really noticeable because you're so caught up in the book. You hear the characters instead of seeing quotation marks. His descriptions give just the right amount of detail. They are never too lengthy or bulky. For example, when he describes Gabe's daughter's appearance after the accident, you'll gasp. His writing is so good, you'll see her clearly in your mind.
Written in first person point-of-view, the entire book is told from Gabe's perspective. The other characters are all secondary to Gabe. They're either shiver-me-timbers creepy or suspicious -- or both. Gabe's likeable almost instantly. In a genre where unreliable narrators are popular in thrillers, Gabe is trustworthy right from the start. He's trying to figure things out right along with you. But nothing will prepare him -- or you-- for the disturbing revelation at the end.
Don't let the unexciting cover fool you. This is a book you want to read. Books in this genre are known for their secrets and twists, but few are as twisted as Shadow Drive. You'll love it.
Thank you to Nolan Cubero and Blackstone Publishing for the complimentary eARC in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
Honestly, for it being the authors first novel it was pretty good. I would say it's a little fast paced and at moments the story was confusing with all the little intricate details about who's who and what exactly was going on, but that just keeps you on your toes. It had a very nice twist that I did see coming before it happened, but it was still satisfying to see it come to fruition.
This was a pacy thriller with short chapters. Gabe is a cool calm father who is looking after his daughter severely injured in a drunk driving accident she caused. He also takes care of his ex wife's rental after they moved back in together to care for Megan (daughter).
A lesson in how not to be a dope for sure. Renting a house to a stranger with no background check and no deposit because of a sob story turns his world upside down uncovering lie after lie... how far would you go to protect your family? Did you ask enough questions? The right questions?
The house at 8160 Shadow drive has good bones but the secrets that lay inside the walls are mortifying.
A landlord’s worst nightmare. A missing person. A coverup. A dead body.
My eyes were glued to the pages of this thriller as my mind untangled the horror that’s been secluded inside the house on Shadow Drive. I can’t stop thinking about the surprising ending, the clues were all there but I was placing all the pieces together alongside the main character and the final twist made my heart rate speed up and left me breathless. 😲
Nolan Cubero brought readers the creepiness in this debut novel. I can see this book becoming popular amongst mystery/thriller enthusiasts and I would love to see this turn into either a tv show or movie.
With such an unlikeable narrator, it really is hard to care about anything that happens to him throughout this book.
The ending was surprising and I loved the twists that were revealed - but it took so long to get there that these really weren't worth the time it took to get there.
This right here is a landlord's worst nightmare. I really enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. It was so nerve-wracking that I found myself speed reading just to get through it and the anxiety it brought. The protagonist was extremely likeable which made me so much more invested in this story. It has the perfect amount of mystery, suspense, and emotion and I would love to see this play out on the big screen, it definitely has the potential for it. I highly recommend this for any mystery/thriller readers. Four Stars.
Thank you Netgalley and Blackstone Publishing for this ARC.
Thank you LibroFM for this audio ARC. I honestly do not know how I feel about this book. It was twisty, and I couldn't predict anything because I was confused on where the book was going.
This thriller doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it's a fun ride anyways. Shadow Drive starts off with Gabe renting one of his properties to a mysterious older women, and shortly after, he realizes she's come to the property looking for something and he begins to try and figure out what exactly is being searched for. It's a twisty ride of betrayal, family tension, and hidden secrets. You can tell that Cubero is a film writer at heart, because the story moves very quickly and doesn't leave too much to the imagination. The writing is sharp, direct, and creates amazing pacing - literally, I couldn't put the book down. I did feel like some of the cuts and moves were too quick for a book, and would have been better suited to a movie, and some of the "read between the lines" style actions left me flipping back and forth. Overall, I started piecing together some of the mystery about halfway through, but I was still surprised by some of the twists. The ending, like many thrillers, seemed to come together a little too quickly and was kind of rushed, but I felt like it tied up most loose ends well. A great first novel for sure.
The only issues I have with this book are around some of the theming and character development. It relies on some tired tropes - drugs, the "bad side of town", alcoholism, "crazy" women... that I'm over. We didn't fully need them, or they could have been done in a more inventive way. Character development wise, I felt like Gabe was a little half baked. I really liked his backstory, how his culture/race affected his life in Louisville, and he was a good narrator - but there was room for a lot more growth to help really nail his motivations and mindsets.
Shadow Drive is every landlord's worst nightmare. Shadow Drive is also every husband and father's worst nightmare.
Nolan Cubero has written a compelling thriller with Shadow Drive. A man who is managing his properties rents one house to an older woman on site. Well, 'rent' is being generous when there is no lease or deposit. When he returns later in the day, he finds a man parked in the driveway, and the older woman nowhere to be seen.
What follows is a nightmare. While Gabe is trying to learn more about the mysterious lady in his property, he's also dealing with a recent reconciliation with his wife, Anya, and taking care of his daughter Megan who was near-fatally injured when she wrecked her car while drunk. Megan is no longer the girl that Gabe once knew, burns cover her body rendering her incapacitated.
Shadow Drive is the story of how far a father will go to protect his daughter.
While there were parts of the book that dragged with too much backstory, it didn't affect the overall thriller. Every time I thought I had it solved, it switched lanes and went a new direction.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the chance to read this book in advance of its release.
I loved the twists and turns of this book! Gabe is getting ready to put his ex wife’s house up for rent when a woman contacts him and says she wants to rent it and move in immediately. He tells her he will be back shortly with a lease and to collect the deposit. When he returns a few hours later the woman has already moved in a few things and changed the locks. Have is puzzled and try’s to call her but can’t reach her. When he tells his ex she is very upset. Anya and Gabe have moved back in together following their daughter’s car accident that has left her unable to communicate much at all and physically unable to care for herself. The story continues with Gabe discovering that the new tenant is ripping the house apart and he is trying to evict the woman and her “son”. He questions his ex wife about what these people may be looking for and why she has kept the basement of the house securely looked with a heavy duty metal door. The handyman that Gabe had hired years ago becomes his helper in trying to evict the tenants. But more twists to the story keeps changing things. Loved this book.
Thank you to libro.fm for providing me with an ALC of this audiobook. I am offering my honest opinion voluntarily.
Have you ever watched someone make a bad decision and just wonder what the hell they were thinking? And then watch them double down on that bad choice again and again, digging themselves deeper and deeper into a hole until you're sure they're going to come out on the other side of the planet? No? Well, have no fear, because you don't have to miss out on this experience.
All you have to do is get your hands on a copy of this book, and you too can watch multiple characters consistently make bad choices like it's their job. It's almost like they can't make a good decision to save their life. And it felt like every twist took this story in a new, weirder direction.
I can't count how many times I said "why would they do THAT?" But I also said "I have to see what happens next," just as many times.
This is a thrilling debut from award-winning filmmaker Nolan Cubero. I enjoyed this book more than I was expecting. This is one of the books that will stay with you for a while. The story has an eerie, creepy feeling to it, and it is a little disturbing. You will go on a wild ride with many twists and turns, and I assure you, you will never guess the ending.
Cubero’s writing style was superb easy to read, and the descriptions were on point.
Landlord’s worst nightmare - Imagine the landlord letting a woman move into his ex-wife’s rental property and the lady assuring she will sign the lease and pay the deposit later that day. When he returns with the lease document and is ready to pick up the deposit, he finds the woman has changed the locks and is not answering his calls. Soon after, the woman is destroying the house apart. Get ready for the ride! This book deserves all five stars. I am looking forward to his second book!
A friend recommended this, so I stuck with it much longer than I would have otherwise. I made it about half way and then gave in. Why: (1) Short declarative sentences, when they weren't fragments, that made it feel as though I were reading a children's book (except for the subject matter, of course); (2) cardboard cut-out characters with no reason to care for them at all; (3) a plot that relies mainly upon the stupid ill-advised actions of these characters.
There was nothing to keep me reading. Perhaps there is some big twist in the last half of the book that makes the book fascinating but, honestly, I don't even care enough about the characters to find a twist entertaining.
I love finding new authors and enjoy reading debuts for that reason. In this case, all I found is an author I do not want to hear from again. Sadly.
The author, Nolan Cubero, reached out and sent me an ARC of his upcoming novel. This is my review.
Shadow Drive will keep a reader on their toes. This novel is a slow burn and I’ll be honest, some chapters were a bit too slow for my liking; then I realized I should enjoy it so I marched on.
Once you think you solved the mystery to this suspenseful story, I can imagine Nolan Cubero laughing as your head spins and you’re back to square one.
The ending was unexpected and jaw dropping. I felt sad for all the characters, even the mastermind behind the events.
If you enjoy reading suspense with shocking endings, definitely add this to your bookshelf.
Okay hear me out, this is literally the dumbest/most clueless male main character EVER. But I kinda love it TBH. I'm tired of clueless female main characters. Bring on the man that doesn't ever know what's going on. Bahaha! That said, this book totally gave me a "holy shit" twist that I haven't experienced in a while. The audio narration is sufficient but I think I would have liked this one even better in print.
Thanks to Libro FM for gifting me an audio copy of this novel. All opinions are my own.
Have I now stayed up two nights in a row way later than I should? Yes. Did I finish this insane book? Yes.
What I thought the ending would be was 1/4 of the way through the book. That was the first of MANY plot twists. I am shocked and my brain hurts, but there was an ending and I love real endings. I don't connect the dots very well by myself, and this guy confuses the heck out of you, and then answers all your questions. 10/10 would recommend for any mystery junkie/plot twist aficionado.

Dark, twisty and twisted Set in Louisville. Diverse characters
I don’t care about the main character, Gabe, but I’m not sure if the reader is supposed to. Gabe is gullible and ignorant in a lot of ways which makes you constantly frustrated with his actions. But (spoiler) in the end, his determination is what puts all of the pieces together. The story is developed superbly with great twists and turns while displaying the complexity of love and devotion though dark events

This book was literally the definition of a page turner - two to three page chapters for a majority of the book were amazing. There were so many twists and turns that even now I still feel a bit confused about. Overall, loved this book, but my only complaint is that there was so much going on with different characters and fake names it was hard to understand. But, I suppose maybe the author partially intended that as well to throw you off 🤷♀️
I'm not usually one for thrillers, but this one had me hooked until the last sentence. We follow Gabe, whose life is upended when his new, mysterious tenant is found to have lied to him about everything. With plenty of twists that will have you gripped, Shadow Drive asks what lengths we will go to protect those we love, how far we would go to keep a secret. This debut from a Louisville native is worth your time.
I was really impressed with the first half. It sucked me in right away and it was very suspenseful in parts. But the second half lost the suspense and dragged a bit too much. It was a fast read and flowed well and the twist was one you'll never suspect.
Thank you to Edelweiss and the publisher for this eARC.
This was wild! Did not see the twists and couldn't stop listening. Definitely recommend for popcorn thriller lovers looking for a fast read with a big reveal at the end!
Thanks to Librofm and Blackstone Audio for this complimentary audiobook. My thoughts are my own.
Amazing thrill ride! Renting to someone who he thought was a good person, is a huge mistake. Lives turned upside down and trying to get back on track makes for a crazy fun read. Nolan Cubero had my attention from start to finish. I don’t think I'll be renting a room to anyone anytime soon.
