Hans de Beer was born in Muiden, a small town near Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. He began to draw when he went to school, mostly when the lessons got too boring. In college, he studied history, but he was drawing so many pictures during the lectures that he decided to become an artist. He went on to study illustration at the Rietveld Academy of Art in Amsterdam. Hans de Beer's Little Polar Bear books enjoy great international success and have been published in eighteen languages in 27 countries.
Lars the little polar bear returns in this second picture-book adventure, this time finding himself caught in a fishing net and hauled aboard ship. Aided by ship's cat Nemo, Lars accepts his fate, waiting to get to port, where Nemo's feline friends can help him. Once they make land, Lars is disgusted by the dirt of a human city, and overjoyed to be taken aboard another ship, this time arctic-bound. For this little polar bear, there's no place like home...
Originally published in Switzerland as Kleiner Eisbär, komm bald wieder! (literally: "Little Polar Bear, come back soon!"), this second of Lars' many adventures parallels the first (Little Polar Bear), in that our ursine hero once again finds himself inadvertently traveling far from home, and struggling to find a way back. The story here is engaging, and the artwork appealing. As a cat lover, I appreciated the fact that this time around it is a group of felines who aid Lars. Recommended to anyone who has read and enjoyed the first book about this little polar bear's adventures.
I have to give four-stars for the adorable illustrations of the polar bears and the cats.
Lars the little polar bear gets caught in a fishing net and ends up on a boat. He meets Nemo, the ship's cat, and they travel to a port where Nemo's buddies help Nemo get home.
Lars, the Little Polar Bear is caught in a fishing net and finds himself on a ship. He is befriended by the ship’s cat, Nemo. After an adventure through the city, Nemo helps Lars onto another ship so he can go back home. Lars realizes how beautiful his home is and appreciates it more than ever. The illustrations are adorable, and Lars is a lovable little friend. I wish there was a little more substance to Lars’ adventures however.
I'm obviously not the target audience and I'm reading this only to kickstart my French, but... it's a really nice story, written in a very kind voice. And the pictures are just so cute!
"Plume reprend bientôt ses jeux habituels mais, de temps en temps, il s'assoit au bord de l'eau et regarde au loin. - Qu'est-ce que tu attends, Plume ? demande Papa. - Un bateau, Papa, un bateau et un ami."
Such a cute story! This went over pretty well with my toddlers - it was perhaps a little long for them, so I might reserve it for preschool next time. The story presents lots of opportunities for listeners to talk about animals, emotions, colors, etc. Definitely using again.
Lars the polar bear got caught in a net and dumped onto a ship where he met a friendly cat. They ended up in a dirty city port, and Lars needed to get back to his home in the Arctic. Nice story and ilustrations.
A cute story of a polar bear cub that gets swept up in a fisherman’s net and has to make his way around port before he can get back home, all with the help of a couple of ship cats
A young polar bear wanders out and gets trapped by a net and ends up on a ship that takes him far from home. The story was adorable and so were the illustrations. My daughter seemed to enjoy this one. Would recommend.
A wonderful little story about a young polar bear called Lars who is scooped up in a fishing boat’s nets. He finds himself on-board the vessel which is now heading away from the Arctic and back to port. This is where his adventures really begin. After extricating himself from the hold where all the caught fish are kept and whilst feeling lost and lonely he is befriended by Nemo who is the ship’s cat. Nemo promises to help Lars when they get to port. The story continues with Lars’s adventures after arriving in port: How his white fur gets dirty in the big city, how Lars and Nemo find their way through the city’s alleyways, how Lars is nearly hit by a truck and how Lars is introduced to Johnny who is another ship’s cat. Johnny’s fishing boat is heading to the North Pole the following day so the story continues with Lars’s adventures on his way back to the docks, the voyage back to the Arctic and his return swim from the ship to the shore in the Arctic during which his fur is cleaned by the water. The story ends with Lars keeping a lookout for any ship’s cats that might fall off their ship and need help in getting back on-board.
I liked this book firstly because the story is pitched at the correct level for Year 1 or 2 children to understand. The vocabulary used is what you would expect a Key Stage 1 child to be able to decipher. Secondly, it introduces the young audience to a part of the world and a particular type of animal that they might not have encountered before. Thirdly, the illustrations (which were also completed by the author) will help children to understand the story if their vocabulary knowledge is not yet quite up to the task.
I read this story to my Year 1 class a few days ago. A few of them had read it before however the majority had not. They enjoyed the story and because the illustrations are clear and frequent I was able to hold the book up so that they could gain a better understanding of what the North Pole (and polar bears) look like. This book is ideal to read to the whole class during carpet time and could be used to explore that area of the world further in a geography lesson. The story could also be used for guided reading or individual reading by a child to expand their vocabulary and understanding of grammar.
Ahoy There, Little Polar Bear was written and illustrated by Hans de Beer. The story is about a little polar beat names Lars who lives in the North Pole and gets swooped up by a fishing boat. On deck he meets a cat named Nemo who acts as a guide for him. They get off the boat at the port together and Lars gets introduced to all of the other cats while they work out a plan to get him back to the North Pole. This is a good book for first to third graders I think.
Some of the themes I noticed in the book are the idea of getting lost involving being scared and also curiosity, friendship, and the issue of pollution. Getting lost and then found again is probably the biggest theme and the author does a good job of showing character growth throughout the story. Friendship is shown between Lars and Nemo from the beginning showing that even though they are difference and from different places they can still become friends. Pollution is showed as an issue that is pointed out by the little polar bear a lot when he is in the city along with all the other dangers that the city carries with it. The idea of how white and clean the North Pole is also mentioned a lot in the book as a contrast.
The illustrations demonstrate a lot of light and dark to tell the story and display the mood. The light represented the North Pole, cleanliness, and a safe place to call home for the little polar bear. The dark represented the ship and port, feeling lost, and dirtiness. I think the contrast in these colors through the book help tell the story and give the reader a sense for how Lars is feeling.
Genre: International Awards: None Grade: 3-4 Comments: I would have the students read this book alone and then when they had all finished we would come together and then I would separate them into groups. Then when they were in groups I would give them pages of the book and they had to draw a picture of what is happening on their pages. This would be on big easel paper and when each group is done I would put them in order and hang them on the wall. This teaches the students about the idea of putting things in chronological order, and help them see the story better.
Adorable illustrations and heartwarming story about finding your way home. Our girls really enjoyed this story. Lars the little polar bear is a very engaging and entertaining character. We like the books in the Lars the Little Polar Bear series by Hans de Beer and I'm sure we'll look for more at our local library.
I loved this book so much, it was the only one I wanted when they brought books for testing to the kindergarten. Having never used the book testing option before (I was too shy and humble to explicitly want anything when not directly asked), I totally misunderstood it and just took the sample book home. The next day, the kindergarten teacher had to send it to the company that gave out the sample books. XD
Ahoy There, Little Polar Bear is a great book to use in the beginning of the school year to start building classroom community! Lars the polar bear gets lost he has to rely on a new found friend to get him home. Using this book can introduce students to friends and friendships and how they should treat each other.
My dad used to read this book to my sisters and I every night at bedtime. We were in love with Little Lars! In this one, Lars gets traped in a fish net, and gets taken onto a ship. He meets the cutest little cat Nemo (who was my favorite character; my dad would do the cutest little impression)who helps him find his way back home. This is probably one of my favorite books ever!
I enjoyed this book. It kind of had an environmental undercurrent because the polar bear is so disgusted by the filth of humans and because he is accidentally captured by humans in a fishing net, but it is mostly a story of kindness between a cat and a polar bear. It's like and enjoyable. I would read it again. I have a feeling that kids would enjoy it too.
