Skip Beat is turning twenty years old this year, so I wanted to re-read the manga from the beginning to celebrate! It's amazing to see what Kyoko was like in the beginning of series versus the more recent chapters.
Some other notes:

•While I do understand why Sho didn't like Kyoko the same way she liked him, to treat your friend like that was just cruel 🤬

•Ren is a troll, not a fairy, and I will die on this hill *:・゚✧

•Whenever Darumaya Taisho and Okami-san show up I'm happy

•Kyoko deserves all the love ಥ_ಥ

This manga was very cute and funny and dealt with serious issues in a better way than I see most shojo cover them.

I like seeing Kyoko come to terms with her past and her issues, living her life for someone else and being abandoned by her family and her best friend, and trying to turn around and bring back positivity.

I've heard that this series has good female friendships, unfortunately none were present in this omnibus, but the ground was paved for some good ones in the future with Kanae and Ruriko and Maria (even though she's a child lol).

This ends in the middle of an interesting arc so that kind of sucks, but it's motivation to go out and read the next volume.

Of the 3 volumes, volume 2 was probably my favorite, the Cinderella story arc was really well done.

Skip Beat is a fun manga about Kyoko who wants to become a celebrity. This is so she can take revenge of her ex-housemate who she had fallen in love with.

At times the story is quite boring and did get a little silly. I don't think I will read anymore in the series. However, on the whole it was a quick enjoyable read.

*Read as part of the 25 Days of Manga challenge for December 2020.*

I've always heard such mixed things about Skip-Beat!, even back when it was initially releasing, but it's blipped on my radar so sporadically over the years I've always sort of forgotten about it again and again. I actually finally got the urge to pick it up and start reading it for myself because Shala from the BookTube-MangaTube channel, Shae Geeks Out. You might figure that's a bit strange, because she's mentioned before she's got very mixed feelings on the series herself, and I personally haven't watched her reaction video (yet) to understand what all her feelings are. But it was honestly the fact she mentioned it in a few videos as being something she felt mixed on that made me finally remember it long enough to consider picking up copies to read on my own. (So, thank you Shae, if you're reading this! I'm sorry if it's awkward to see, and I'll definitely watch your reaction vlog to the series after I've gone through it myself.)

Going into this first omnibus, I genuinely didn't have much in the way of expectations, and I think that's probably for the best, all things considered. So far, I did enjoy these first three volumes, even if the story itself has certain levels of absurdity that leave me raising an eyebrow and stretch my suspension of disbelief just a little. (Then again, that seems to be a bit of a commonality in manga that touches on Japan's idol culture.) Our MC Kyoko is somewhat set up to be a tough and, perhaps just a little unlikable, young woman...and I feel like her motivations and somewhat acidic nature make her feel more human. In some ways, she's really relatable, even if it's a bit negative.

Ultimately, I think what I especially am interested in seeing with this series is Kyoko gain her own full sense of identity. While the summary of the plot and the progression of dialogue and monologue steers into the idea of watching her rise to stardom and fame, I feel like the greater aspect of her character is wrapped up in realizing that everything she's done in her life at this point has been shaped and molded (by herself and those around her) for something that's not going to happen. And everything beneath the surface of her character throughout these chapters points to her going through this drawn-out identity crisis and questioning her sense of self-worth and impact on others. It's not always the focus point of what's occurring, but when it happens, it strikes a chord with me. So I'm really looking forward to seeing how Yoshiki Nakamura handles this aspect of her character as the story progresses, and seeing who she becomes (whether or not I end up liking who she turns into by the end of the series) because I don't feel like I often see that struggle with a sense of identity tackled in shoujo.

SERIES REVIEW:
(Side note - I have read more than what's official by reading translated online scans, as such my view may be a bit biased based on further plot developments.)
Skip Beat is possibly the best shoujo I have ever read! While the art style may throw newer readers off as it is very 90's/early 2000's do NOT let it keep you from giving this manga a try! The characters and plot more than make up for any lacking art. Kyoko is my favorite protagonist I have ever read - book or manga. This is not your typical shoujo by any means. It has romance but focuses more on Kyoko's growth as an individual as well as her determination to find herself. The other characters are not left behind either. They are also constantly growing and changing in different ways giving off such a vibrant and realistic vibe (well mostly realistic-if you have read it you know what I mean) If you are looking for romance, comedy, a shoujo with depth this is the one. While at times the slower romance pace is frustrating the pay offs make it worth it. Instead of a cheap fix so many shoujo manga are doing this is a slow burning master piece. I really cannot give this series enough praise and everyone - shoujo fan or not, manga fan or not - needs to give it a try!

There is one thing that Skip Beat! is associated with in my mind, the first thing I think of when I see the title, the thing that stopped me from reading this for years:

the ugly pointy faces

Years ago, I tried. I really did, because I have friends who like the series. I read the first volume but couldn't get past the mirror-breaking ugliness of the men who are, supposedly, very attractive.

Like, look, this is our first real introduction to Sho, a [theoretically cute] 16-year-old who takes advantage of his childhood friend's crush having her work to support them in Tokyo while he pursues an idol career and does squat to show he's anything other than a toad:

I just...ugh.

Honestly, it took me the first book (which makes up the first third of this omnibus) to just get used to it. The series started in 2002, but the pointy designs made me think of even older shoujo manga.

And beyond the designs, it took me a while to warm to Kyoko, the protagonist who decides to become a celebrity solely to get back at Sho after learning he doesn't care for her, and only asked her to join him in Tokyo because he knew she would work hard to support him.

Great motivation, honestly. It's refreshing to read a heroine who is like, I'm motivated by SPITE and REVENGE, even though she has the more typical qualities of being hard-working and warm-hearted underneath. The problem in the first volume is that a) Kyoko is embarrassing, and b) everyone else in the entertainment biz is concerned about her heart and does she truly understand how to make people happy in this way and I'm offended because I think her motivation is improper.

After the first volume, the series is more comfortable with itself and the reader has a better idea of how this fictional world works. It's ridiculous, yes, often to soap opera levels, but that's what drives the entire thing. You just have to figure out the base level of ridiculousness that the world accepts as normal, and it starts being a better read.

The art overall--beyond ugly chin boys--is nice, and there's a good mix of drama and humor. I read this and the next omnibus together (so, volumes 1-6) and it does keep getting better, especially as the set-up gets done and Kyoko can interact with recurring characters and we can start to see plot development.

Character designs, besides their chins and exceedingly thick male necks, are also good: characters are easy to differentiate, a crucial issue as the cast expands.

But still:

ugh

overall review after reading up to volume 48

i adore this series more than i can say. it's completely different from the type of shoujo manga i typically gravitate towards—it's cheesy, unrealisatic and over-the-top but in the best possible way. i lost count of how many times i laughed out loud like an actual maniac while reading this.

i found many of the characters to be memorable, charming and entertaining. kyoko is without doubt my favourite manga heroine of all time, and if someone asks me which male lead from a manga is the closest to my ideal type, my answer would be ren. i had heard many people complain that their relationship felt dragged out, but i honestly did not feel that way at all (though this answer is highly dependent on the fact that i read the entirety of the manga in less than a week). to me it was a very well-developed slow-burn that i can't help but root for; the author was able to convey to me the depth of their feelings towards each other and show me why they should be together.

the most unexpected part of all was that this manga made be rethink my concept of passion, which had been something i've been struggling with. when i first finished reading this series i felt jealous to see kyoko discover and strive towards a goal she was passionate about, to be able to attain a sense of fulfillment i desperately want to feel myself. much like kyoko, i've always prided myself on being able to give my all to achieve any goal i've set myself towards, but i had felt empty because i wasn't able to find any goal i have a passion for. it felt comforting to see that kyoko only discovered her passion for acting only after she had tried it out. it was such a simple fact that i had overlooked at first. but once i noticed that, it opened up to me a possibility that maybe i don't have to know exactly what my passion is right now—i just have to be brave enough to step out in the world and try out new things in hopes that i will stumble over an unexpected surprise the way kyoko did.

This manga is so hilarious. I was hesitant to pick this series up because it’s been an ongoing manga since the early 2000s with no end in sight. However, if it keeps being this entertaining, I’m in for the long haul.

Basically, our main girl wants to become a celebrity so she can have her revenge on someone and what ensues are her ups and downs of entering the entertainment industry. She is so freaking funny and I can’t help but root for her as she starts to actively have a passion for this career and not just be in it for revenge.

Kyoko moved to Tokyo with her friend Sho. Sho went to Tokyo to make it as an idol and now when he has made it, Kyoko finds out that he has just be using her as a housekeeper. She is planing on getting revenge on Sho by going into show biz. But things doesn't go as planned.

This book.. Well. It was way to long and not a lot happened in the story. It was the same through out the story.

This mangaka (artist/author) has such an amazing sense of humour. This series is for any girl out there who has had a bad relationship; Kyoko is a girl who seeks revenge and never wants to have a relationship again. In the meantime, she does her best to enter into showbiz, and there meets someone who may just be able to open up her heart again...but it won't be easy. This story takes its time to allow the characters to grow, and it makes it very realistic; a wound to the heart is very slow in healing after all.

Li este livro pela primeira vez em 2015, na mesma altura que vi o anime, e dei 5 estrelas. Agora, em 2022, decidi reler e não é surpresa para mim que continuei a amar. Eu adoro as personagens, o plot, a arte, o ambiente, etc. Li-o de uma assentada e as partes que me impactaram da primeira vez continuam a impactar-me agora. Ansiosa para chegar aos próximos.
(2022)

Como adoro ler e reler esta série... Rever estas personagens que já me são tão familiares é sempre fantástico. Vão sempre ser livros cheios de momentos especiais para mim. Momentos cheios de lições e beleza.

i missed these characters with all my heart and soul. i also care deeply with Maria who likes curses and a dark sense of self because of what happened to her when she was younger. who i think will like this?
well anybody who loves acting movies and the entertainment industry as a whole, this manga is also a humorous manga depended on how your sense of humor is.
i hate that sho is such a lazy ass, i also love our kyoko who is in the love me section because she has lost her sense of romantic love because of sho (forgive me if you do not like me cursing)

Urk! This manga reminds me why I was way more into shonen manga, growing up...

Okay. I love kawaii things. I love frills, sparkles, pastels, the works! But shoujo manga tends to be such a miss for me. Not all of them, but a lot. Too focused on boys being my main problem. Skip Beat! is no exception.

Main character Kyoko starts the omnibus manga as a homely girl whose entire like is devoted to Sho. Kyoko worked in Sho's family business, learning many traditional Japanese pastimes such as performance of tea ceremonies and the proper wear of a kimono. She moves into the big city with him after he decides that he doesn't want to run his family's inn--and asks Kyoko to come along. What Kyoko think is a token of their solid friendship and love turns out to be...

Anything but. Dreams crushed and reality sinking in, Kyoko decides that the best way to get back at him is to...become a bigger star than he is. ;n_n Okay. No problem with that, I can see this as a viable method of revenge. Knock him off of his high horse!

The story is just all kinds of ridiculous. At times hard to follow. The constant "..." between lines of text bugged my attention span. Though very humorous at some points, I found that it took me way too long to finish this book. I think I was pretty much done after the commentary about how pale skin is seen as pure or whatever.

This probably isn't a fair review, given my anime/manga tastes. While I do love anime like Sailor Moon and Fruits Basket, I am much more of a shonen girl. Skip Beat! is also a classic (it was released when I was 12), so I do remember it being popular but I never got into it. After reading other reviews I see that some other prefer the anime. I would be willing to give that a try. Otherwise, I don't feel compelled to continue this series. :(

I read the first volume not too long ago and I really loved it. I loved it so much that I ended up buying 5 of the 3 in 1 editions of this series as a treat for myself for my birthday. If I didn't owe my father a lot of money and wasn't saving up for going on holiday, then I may have bought most of the series in one go because the first volume had that much of an impact on me. At least this way I can read about a third of the series and think about if I want to continue on with it.

I really enjoyed this book. I'm looking forward to continuing and seeing what will happen next, but knowing that the series is 43 volumes long and still being published make me feel like this is going to be an incredibly long and slow ride. I'm hoping that it won't mean that it is a bad thing. I think the selling point of this story so far is that you can see where the romance will happen in the future but it's not going to happen yet so the plot can focus on building up Kyoko's character and career. I am really looking forward into seeing how Kyoko will develop because she will grow so much in the series. With the characters, I think that they are done incredibly well. We are slowly getting to know the main characters as well as side characters we meet along the way. It feels like we are in Kyoko's life.

Overall, I really enjoyed this volume and I cannot wait to not only continue on with the series but also for the weekend where I can binge read loads of mangas that I bought for my birthday, including this series!

I started with the second columns because I recently read the first volume. The story about girl who follows her childhood friend to only find he was using her. She goes to have her revenge by entering the same business which is show business then showing him up. The first volume is her as she tries to break into show business then failing. The second volume is her adventure as she falls into dispear then pulling herself back up. She makes it into to business but not where she thought. Shortly after she gets a shot through a competition but it going to be slugfest. Volume 3 starts with the results of the competition. Through this competition she realize she wants to be actress. She also knows she has a long ways to go. The leads to a acting classes and a test she might not be ready for. Skip Beat is about a girl as she enters show business for less than noble reason who comes find out who she really is and where she belongs. It really great story and cannot wait to read more.

Ahhh, talk about a nostalgia hit.

I remember this series from way back in the day; I didn't realize it's still an ongoing one too!

I really enjoyed reading this. I think this covers a more realistic reaction of a protagonist being wronged and how she goes about her little path for revenge. Kyoko's anger towards Sho for duping her and essentially living off her while she worked two jobs for him on his path to stardom was both righteous and at time petty - and I live for every moment of it. Sometimes it really is spite that sees you through some moments in your life. Lol.

It does fall victim to some typical shoujo tropes; we can already see the next love interest of enemies to lovers being set up and most of the female characters being introduced tend to butt heads with Kyoko which is annoying but it's interesting to see them begin to be fleshed out into potentially complex characters.

I do wish Kyoko wouldn't partake in the dumb bitch juice so much but overall it's a fun series to read.

3.5 stars. I'm not sure if I love this series but I am entertained by it. I can see how it 'should/will' go. I mean it's shojo right?
High school age Kyoko followed her boyfriend to Tokyo because he asked her to come and support him while he tries to achieve his dream of being a famous singer. She worked two jobs and took care of everything in their lives so all he had to do was work on his dream. Once he becomes famous enough he dumps her and says he doesn't need her anymore, so she vows to become more famous than him to squash him. She meets famous actor Ren, who she tells she wants to become famous for revenge. He looks down on her because that is no reason to become famous, it wasn't pure. All her interactions stem from her hate for Sho and she's like 16 so she is very dramatic, single minded, trying to figure out who she is in the world without him. Some rather funny moments and making those around her not underestimate her.

***after reading***
Yes yes yes. I still like it! Although I'm wondering what my humour is if I still laugh at the same things as 14 (?) Years ago.

Very strong start. And I'm glad I bought the omnibus. I do enjoy this format of reading manga. Even if the pages are thin enough to see the lines of the next page. That doesn't bother me, I'm used to that in my planner and journal.

***before reading***
I think I started reading the scanlations when I was 19? I can still see myself reading this on my first serious study laptop in my first rented 'room' (appartement that you share with others), living away from home for the first time.

Getting outraged because Sho was such a douche.

We're 14 years later? And is this series finished? I actually don't know. But I'm glad the omnibussen came out. 🤞 Hopefully it'll hold up!

I bought it in November 2013, while I was living in Sweden. It took me eight years to read it and the series isn't over yet... I read it because they're going to publish it in Italian and I wanted to see if it was good...

Is it?

Jeez, it started too weirdly but I loved the second and third volume. I loved the way the author turns the story around because the first volume, with the protagonist working herself to death for a friend who doesn't care for her, wasn't really my thing. But then, the plot moves to a talent agency and the heroine decides she has to be famous to spite the guy and WOW!

The art is a bit weird but some motifs the author uses are extremely funny.

I'm definitely going to buy the Italian edition!

I didn't get to update my progression but I read this manga over the weekend.

Skip Beat! follows the story of a young girl who enters showbiz as a way of revenge against her "ex-boyfriend", Sho. She is a persistent person and although her intentions started out as a way to get revenge and be better than her ex. She discovers herself and her love of acting.

It's a cute coming of age story. The art style is beautiful and the protagonist is a relatable character.

I remember vol.1 being the first manga I ever read in elementary school. I found it in a scholastic fair. I was only able to read that first volume but I recently heard that Skip Beat! is still ongoing so I decided to give the series a read. I can't wait to see Mogami's journey.

At first I wasn't sure what to think. I'm glad I got the omnibus because I wouldn't have continued based solely on volume 1. I'm midway through vols 4,5,6 and am hooked. I won't add much to other reviews, but if you're on the fence at first, read a few more volumes. I'm totally hooked now. My read dates (07/15/20-08/27/15) reflect my initial hesitation alongside time I took away from reading to work on my upcoming release. Once I restarted and hit the halfway mark, I read until I finished it and then started the next one. ^_-
