(Read for HEAC June 2012 Over-In-A-Flash Challenge)
Lena Diaz is a new to me author, whose romantic suspense debut "He Kills Me, He Kills Me Not" was a big hit with me. The author took her time developing the characters, as well as the romance side of the coin. There was an equal balance between the solid and strong suspense and the building relationship between the leading characters. An excellent secondary cast points the way to the next installment. This story contains dark, gritty, and gruesome crimes. The female lead is scarred deeply and emotionally. Coming to her rescue, of course, is our hero, who is fighting battles from his past. Together they slowly work towards resolving current and past traumas, while moving towards a future together. The past is not overdone nor does it overshadow the here and now -- but clearly explains the characterizations. The author's writing is clear, concise and to the point. I read alot of romantic suspense & favor it more than any other -- and this one hooked me fast and held onto me without a slip-up.
I'm going to immediately follow up with her second in the series "Simon Says Die." For romantic suspense lovers, this is definitely one you want to check out.

I really don't know what to say about this one. Yes, I finished it but I really did not care for the characters. He was feeling guilty about what happened in the past. She was feeling guilty about what happened in the past.
I've said it before, Romantic Suspense has to be really GOOD for me to love it. The Queen of RS is Ms Sandra Brown and after having read her recent books, I am spoiled. Sorry RS authors but that's just the way I feel.

This probably isn't for me.
I like the plot, despite being overly used in a romantic suspense genre but I can't really empathize and feel the characters. There's also the lack of gore that I want in my crime books (or maybe the gory scenes in this book doesn't affect me). The author's way of writing is simple and it's kind good but I'm still debating whether I should read more of her books or not..

Four years after her harrowing ordeal at the hands of a serial killer, Amanda Stockton has changed her name and is finally getting on with her life. But now the monster who played his deadly game with her has struck again and Police Chief Logan Richards is convinced that Amanda knows something that can help catch a madman. Unfortunately, the killer thinks so too...
An intriguing premise and a solid beginning. Unfortunately, the story and the romance lose momentum toward the end.
This is one of those rare cases where the characters are overdeveloped and the details of their lives are repeated over and over ad nauseam. How many times do we have to hear of the mistake that led Logan to leave town, or about the sick game the killer played with Amanda - a game that is never fully explained nor is how the heck she got away from him?
Amanda and Logan’s initial chemistry is strong, but ultimately fizzles toward to end and the last chapter or so actually undermine the romance. Added to this is the unrealistic nature of their relationship. Would a detective really risk his case by becoming involved with a witness, not to mention moving her into his home?
The resolution to the case is also problematic as the killer is not only obvious, but his motivation is inexplicable - .
All in all, not sure that this one is worth the effort.

I am sad to say this book didn't grab my attention like I wanted and hoped it would. I was really excited to read this book but it was not for me. I was disappointed I didn't like this book more. The characters did not grab me and I was not interested in reading more with this book.

Book opens with the killer posing his latest victim in the park. She is covered with stab wounds on her abdomen and extremities and deep cut on her face from temple to jaw. He puts a single red rose in her hand with just one thorn left on the rose.
Police Chief Logan Richards grew up in Shadow Falls and was a beat cop who made a rookie mistake that let a killer go free. To punish himself he moved to New York City and became a detective in one of the roughest precincts. Many years later after his marriage failed he came back to Shadow Falls and took the Police Chief position. He still feels an enormous amount of guilt for that rookie mistake. After realizing that this latest murder is the same as the ones that happened 4 years ago he calls in the FBI. He also realizes that the one survivor from those killings years ago could now be in danger.
Four years ago, Amanda Stockton along with her best friend was abducted and forced to play a sick version of he love me, he love me not – the killers version is the pluck the thorns from a rose saying he kills me, he kills me not. She got away from the killer but not before he carved her body and face and killed her friend. Since then she retreated from the world to scared to be around people and also embarrassed for other to see the scar on her face. But when she hears on the news that another woman has been found dead, and a long-stemmed red rose was in her hands, she knows the killer is back.
The author pretty much gives us a big clue as to who the killer is right off the bat but that didn’t make the story any less suspenseful.
Amanda has the usual hang ups you would expect from a woman who had been abducted and tortured and having to watch as her friend is killed. She is very leery of Logan and FBI Special Agent Pierce Buchanan (who is the hero in the next book along with Logan’s sister who we also meet in this book). At first she wants nothing to do with helping them but decides it time face her fears and leave her self imposed prison. Logan has his fare share of hang ups too. He feels an extreme need to protect Amanda but misinterprets a lot of her signals pretty much from the beginning to the end due to not being able to let go of guilt from things in the past. Thank goodness Pierce was there to slap him upside his head a few times.

Amanda&Logan ikilisinin enerjisini sevdiğim için dörde yuvarladım. Yoksa tam üç yıldızlık bir kitaptı. Bir de sonunu beğenmedim ama yine de tatlı ve tutkulu bir çiftti... severiz😌
Gizem bakımından beni tatmin etmedi. Serinin ilk kitabı ancak en çok sevilen kitabı da bu, devam edip etmemek arasında kaldım. Katili tahmin etmek çok kolaydı. Genel itibariyle sürükleyici bir kitaptı sıkılmadım. Ama işte... bu türde tahmin edememek daha çok hoşuma gidiyor😐

He Kills Me, He Kills Me Not is absolutely gripping.
The novel opened with a chilling account of the serial killer positioning the body of his latest victim. Even more distressing, Ms. Diaz hinted that the killer is someone in law enforcement. I love a good mystery and was hooked instantly. I had to discover the killer’s identity and how he would be caught. Ms. Diaz created a sense of urgency that had me racing through the pages seeking the answers.
Ms. Diaz certainly knows her way around a good mystery. The list of suspects was small. I was constantly evaluating and reevaluating several of the secondary characters wondering if their pleasant demeanor was merely a mask hiding a killer. Ms. Diaz left tantalizing clues throughout the story, and I was able to piece some of them together. However, I can honestly say I was surprised when the last piece of the puzzle clicked into place.
Amanda is easily one of the strongest heroines I’ve had the pleasure of reading about. After facing the serial killer years ago, Amanda’s physical injuries have healed, but her emotional and mental wounds are still bleeding. I admire the courage it took for her to agree to help the police. As if facing the nemesis of her past wasn’t enough, Amanda also finds herself falling in love with Logan. Ms. Diaz did an excellent job of depicting Amanda’s desire for Logan as well as her fear of being vulnerable. As Amanda and Logan explore their feelings for each other, it was a pleasure watching Amanda’s wounds begin to heal.
Logan is the perfect hero for Amanda. He’s strong, caring, protective, and loyal. Despite his tough exterior, Logan has some scars of his own. He made a terrible mistake when he was a rookie cop that still haunts him. Logan is determined to never make a mistake on the job again. His drive is certainly admirable, but his single minded focus blinds him to the simple pleasures in life, including Amanda’s obvious affection for him. Logan and Amanda had some truly tender moments, but they also had some bitter arguments stemming from their stubborn streaks. I found myself wanting to smack both of them at times. Logan and Amanda were talking to each other, but neither was really hearing what the other had to say. The push and pull of their dynamic relationship added an interesting dimension to the story that was every bit as compelling as the mystery Logan was trying to solve.
In addition to weaving an excellent mystery and creating well rounded characters, Ms. Diaz also made excellent use of descriptive language. “The sweet music of her screams echoed in his mind as he inhaled the lavender-scented shampoo he‘d selected for her. He sat cross-legged on the carpet of pine needles, stroking her hair, his fingers sliding easily through the silky brown mass he had washed and brushed.” After reading these two sentences, I had goose bumps. The crimes of the serial killer are truly gruesome, and it would have been easy to go over the top with the description of his atrocities. However, Ms. Diaz did a great job of providing just enough detail to make the hair on the back of my neck stand up, but stopped short of revealing so much that I felt sick. It is a fine line that Ms. Diaz walked very well.
I’m so glad I had the opportunity to read He Kills Me, He Kills Me Not. The characters are well rounded, the romance is spicy, and the mystery is riveting. I highly recommend He Kills Me, He Kills Me Not to fans of romantic suspense.

When I first saw the name of the book it had me interested. I was thinking "Wow, someone has their life in someone's hand with a bit of twist with the game: "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not". As I began to read this book I could not put it down. I started reading it on Wednesday and had it done by Thursday night. I did not want to put the book down, my kids saw me making their meals with my Kindle in my hand. I was that interested in it. The twist and turns of the book were enough for you not to put it down. When I realized I knew "who-done-it" I was screaming "I knew it! I knew it was that person!" my kids and husband said I was acting crazy. Then in the next breathe they saw me balling my eyes out and was wondering how I could go from so happy to so sad so quickly. Lena had me crying not once but twice and when I say crying I am balling! This is definitely a book that plays with your emotions, get's you into the book like you are there one of the character's playing their part!
There are two main character's and a few that play a major role to help Amanda and Chief Logan Richards. I thoroughly enjoyed how Lena developed both of these characters. As we learn about Amanda and the crime that happened to her for years ago, you see a scared young lady that cannot trust anyone, especially a man. You watch her develop into a woman that will no longer be the "victim" and wanting to fight back with everything she has and more. You watch how she struggles to remember the crime that happened to her, so she can help Chief Logan Richards with the new investigations that is going on. She has the guts to be able to emerge herself into the case so that way they can catch the killer that killed her friend and tortured her four years ago. You watch as she goes from a woman who cannot trust anyone to falling in love.
Chief Logan Richards is now the chief of police of where he ran away from prior. You watch as he has to fight his own demons of what happened when he was a rookie cop. You see the torture that he has been living all the years because of a mistake. He finds Amanda and wants to help her in her own dark past. You watch as he tries to find the killer that killed four years prior, you watch how he also falls in love.
The way that Lena develops this story line is exceptional. She brings twists and turns and keeps you guessing. You will emerge yourself into this book, you will not want to put this book down. Your emotions will be tugged at.

My Amanda:
Logan:
So, I really enjoyed this story. Amanda (the main female character) was a strong leading character and although very reserve at times, remained strong and stood by her convictions. A few scenes she acted like a 5yr old, which kind of bothered me but overall she remained strong and lovable character.
Logan, what a delicious male. I love the way he was described and definitely had the powerful alpha-vibe going. Although the alpha-vibe does seem the make the male stupid from time to time. Through out the entire story Logan has a well-rounded personality. He is intelligent, patient, sensible and don't forget freaking hot! In the end thought, like in the last 2 chapters, his intelligence level seems to drop significantly

This was one of the reasons I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. The other reason was there was not a whole lot of "hey-hey" going on, understandably, but there was mostly "should I, could I, I want too, but...". About 70% is where you get to the act itself and it was sweet and romantic (I usually like it a little rough, but I don't think it would have worked here)

I actually really enjoyed this book. I thought it had a riveting story line, characters that I could believe (mostly), a semi tear jerking conclusion, and was written relatively decently.
I did have a hard time believing the 'love at first sight' thing, which apparently happens in all (or most) crime novels. But hey, if it works then it works I guess. I didn't like that Police Chief Richards (Logan) basically ran away after his 'rookie' mistake 10 years prior. I thought that even though it was covered with the fact that he left and went to further his police training so he could become Police Chief or whatever it was kind of lame. Like 'oh hey, I messed up so now I'm just going to run away and let all of this guilt bug me for the rest of my life.'
Now, onto the things I did enjoy. I loved the story. Like the actual progression from what happened to Amanda at the beginning of everything to what happens right down to the last page between her and Logan. I loved the crime aspect of it. I thought the 'he kills me, he kills me not' thing was really enjoyable to read and something that I hadn't read before. I loved the characters. Even though they were all sort of over the top (with all the lovey dovey, goo-goo eyes they made at each other) I still enjoyed how they interacted with all of the other characters throughout the story.
Definitely glad I put this on my to-read list and then made sure I forced myself to read it instead of reading something I have read 8 times prior.

Like the actual progression from what happened to Amanda at the beginning of everything to what happens right down to the last page between her and Logan. I loved the crime aspect of it. I thought the 'he kills me, he kills me not' thing was really enjoyable to read and something that I hadn't read before. I loved the characters. Even though they were all sort of over the top (with all the lovey dovey, goo-goo eyes they made at each other) I still enjoyed how they interacted with all of the other characters throughout the story.
Definitely glad I put this on my to-read list and then made sure I forced myself to read it instead of reading something I have read 8 times prior.

What a fantastic book!
From the very first page this novel is gripping! It starts with the killer arranging the body of his latest victim just so, which makes it all the more eerie. You get a sense that this killer may be a cop or is in law enforcement "gasp!". Every single character worked in this book and their interaction with each other pure magic especially with the leads Logan & Amanda. We love a good romance but when that romance is sometimes halted/interrupted by past mistakes or occurrences and even fear it tends to give a novel that much more character! The author gives us so many things to think about - with the suspense factor on who the killer could be - nail biting. Throughout the whole book you will change your mind on numerous occasions and then go back to who you originally pinpointed as the killer (if you managed to get it right) - wonderful stuff. The romance was awesome and the suspense/mystery in this book excellent.
I am so glad I decided to read this book and roped Suzanne into reading it too (but that's what we do to each other) and we gave it our full attention. We are so impressed with Lena Diaz and cannot wait for her next installment. If wishes were books, the next one (for us) would continue with Pierce and Madison.

When Chief Logan Richards comes to her door, and digs it all up she's horrified to say the least. She wants no part of it. Until another women is murdered. Can she help him out? He won't stay away and just leave her alone.
Logan needs Amanda's help. He is holding a deep dark mistake he made a long time ago. The weird thing is he let's her in. He can't concentrate on the case wih the feelings he has for her. He's missing something.
The killer is about to strike again. Can Logan catch him before he kills again? He wants to protect Amanda. Things become pretty intense. How will they deal with there feelings for each other?

If you don't like romantic suspense with strong female characters and heroes you'll fall in love with, this may not be a book for you. All joking aside, I loved this book. It may be the best I've read in a while!
Amanda, (Mandy to Logan during tender moments)is well written and believable. And I rooted for Logan from the beginning. He was the perfect mixture of gruff, tender and sexy. This book has the most satisfying ending ever!
It's an all nighter, because once you open it to the first page, you're hooked.

My book club chose this book for our March read. Lena Diaz will appeal to fans of and is just as good as Julie Garwood's romantic suspense novels. Although I found the book a bit predictable, it in no way lessened my enjoyment of it. This book made me laugh and get teary eyed. The main characters(Amanda and Logan) are well developed and authentic.This fast paced engaging read will have turning the pages until the very end.

Loved this book! One of those rare books that does the suspense and the romance equally well. I can't count how many times I thought I knew who the bad guy was then changed my mind. I loved the hero and the heroine from the beginning and my enjoyment of their romance just grew and grew. Going on my keeper shelf!

Really creepy villain, a strong yet wounded heroine, and one of my fave types of heroes - the upright lawman. I love that Logan, the hero, was such a straight arrow and a deeply good guy. He even wears a suit and is a total pro, which is a nice break from the barely reformed bad boy cop. This is Lena Diaz's first book, and I predict she has a really good career ahead of her!

This book was my first by Ms Diaz and it will not be my last. She writes a very fast paced suspense story with likeable characters. I am looking forward to the next story with the hero's sister and FBI agent Pierce. (more to come)

I can't say enough about how much I loved this book. Diaz writes the type of books that drags you into the story before you even know it. I loved the characters and they journey to good health, in both mind and body. A must read.

Where do I start with this book? I guess I'll start with the beginning of this book. The beginning showed promise. The premise showed promise. Hell, everything up until Amanda and Logan started making goo-goo eyes at each other showed promise.
Then everything went to shit. FAST. It was like the heavens opened up and had a serious case of diarrhea and it rained shit for 40 days and 40 nights.
But I can sum up my complete 'as if' reaction to this book in a couple sentences. The first one would be: What the hell is up with romance books these days that rely on the hero or heroine making major, life-altering decisions based solely on the fact that they ASSUME that the other is feeling this or thinking that? EVERYTHING Amanda and Logan did to keep their relationship from progressing was because the other assumed something because nobody fucking talked to each other. Full stop. It's a cop out, and a sign of a lazy writer.
A second point for this first sentence would be why on earth didn't Amanda tell the police everything she knew right from the get-go? It's not like she didn't remember, she just flat out shut down anyone who asked. Her whole 'I want to help you, I really do' bullshit followed by 'but I'm not going to tell you shit' just doesn't cut it. If anyone should feel guilty about all the people who died after she got away it should be HER (not Logan) because the one thing she did mention (that he called her Kate) was the single clue leading them to the killer. Hell, her caginess should have made a decent police officer kinda suspect that maybe she wasn't really a victim after all, perhaps? But we all know just how bad a cop Logan really is.
The second sentence would be: Why in God's name is Logan still chief of police when he makes as many spectacular mistakes as he did? And they still want him back after he quits, because (get this), he ASSUMES that they think he's not good enough to stay on the job. Holy shitballs, this book was just one poor judgment call after another from Logan, from the mistake that drove him to New York before the book takes place, to the idiotic, rookie mistakes of leaving case files unprotected at home, not following his gut about Riley to his completely unethical behavior in first bringing Amanda into his own home instead of a safe house and then sleeping with her to boot. It's just mind boggling. Hell, AMANDA HERSELF did a better chief of policing job than Logan did. (and the arrogance of Logan to take credit for it? Oh, no he didn't...) And to top it all off, the Mayor (now there's a piece of work himself, in the two instances he's mentioned also...) then tells him that in order to get his job back he's got to marry Amanda? Puh-lease. I can't even.
And the third sentence would be: Even realizing this is a romantic suspense novel, where the romance come first and the suspense second, the whole who-dunnit part was completely forgotten in the grand scheme of things. There was zero build-up. Zero actual suspense. Hell, if you didn't realize who did it after about chapter 2, when you're not paying enough attention.
All said, I'll give it a second cookie because the writing wasn't too horrific.

Kitabı çok beğendim. Yazarın anlatımı çok iyidi; hiçbir kafa karışıklığı hissetmeden, her şeyi kolayca anlıyor ve yaşıyor gibi okuyorsun. Yazar kurgusunun da hakkı vermiş; kitapta 'bazı' şeylerin ipuçları vardı ama kabul edip evet, kesin bu bôyle, diyemedim. Tereddütte kalıyor ama tam olarak konuyu da eşeleyemiyorsun. Sonu ise gerçekten çok iyidi; yarı tahmin edilebilir yarı edilemez.
Kitapta bir kadının hem güçlü yanını hissediyor hem de korkak yönünü yaşıyorsun. Sevmek, başkalarına çirkin gelebilecek şeyleri öperek güzelleştiren ve bunu derinden hissettirmeye sebep olan harika bir duygudur; Logan ise bunu bize gösteren mükemmel bir karakter.
Kitap polisiye, bu sebeple bazı kitaplarda aşk, biraz geri planda tutulur -bu iyi de olur- ama bu kitapta aşkın, polisiye ile orantılı şekilde ilerlemesi kurguyu daha okunası yapmış. Ve kesinlikle kurgu özgündü.

‘He kills me, he kills me not’ is a romantic suspense novel that revolves around the victim Amanda Stockton, a survivor of serial killer who kidnaps two girls at the same time, tortures and hurts them in unimaginable ways and when the three days are over he plays a little game with them. He takes a rose and plucks each thorns whilst repeating “he kills me, he kills me not”, referring to himself as a third person and killing regardless where his chants stop. He has never resurfaced in the same town twice but he makes in exception where he starts hunting again in Amanda’s hometown. The police forces and feds join forces together before he hurts someone again or goes after the only survivor of his wicked game. Police Chief Logan Richards is convinced that Amanda knows something that can help catch a madman and so does the killer.
The story is dark, real and gruesome. The plot was well thought out and suspense kept me on the edge throughout the book. You are apprehensive of every character and questioning them at every turn, thinking if they are the killer or not. Trying your very best to the guess the killer; What’s the motive though? For most people, the suspense would be “who’s the killer?” but for me is the question “why is he doing this?” The author did a really good job to shift the suspicions, explain everything and tie the loose ends. The characters were real, complex and experiencing the turmoil of emotions that any human being would when faced with harsh life threatening emotions. Amanda is a head strong character but she is given her own vulnerabilities and showcased them realistically. It’s exactly what a person who has gone through trauma would be like. There was an equal balance between the solid and strong suspense and the building relationship between the leading characters. An excellent secondary cast points the way to the next instalment.
The downsides of this novel were: I did have a hard time believing the 'love at first sight' thing, which apparently happens in most crime novels, especially when it’s the victim and the police officer. This eventually boils down to the protective instincts of cops and the traumatised individual’s need to feel safe. The other downside was: we're never privy to any thoughts or emotions from the killer's point of view which would have made it a lot more captivating.

3.5 Sterne. Die Story gefiel mir ansich gut, kam mir aber ein wenig zu kurz im Vergleich zur Romanze, die das Buch ebenfalls enthielt. Die Liebesgeschichte war mir stellenweise zu dick aufgetragen: Logan etwas zu perfekt, dass es einem stetig Seufzer entlockt ;-) und Amanda... schwer zu beschreiben. Eigentlich waren sie mir beide zwischenzeitlich zu verunsichert, dass ich manchmal fast schon genervt war.
Trotz allem konnte ich das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen! Es hat mich gut unterhalten. Am Ende ging es gefühlt zwar kaum noch um den Täter, sondern nur noch um das ersehnte Liebesglück, aber sei's drum! ;-)

This was a pretty good series start. The chief of police in a small town, Logan, discovers a murder that resembles that of a serial killer years before, one that had one victim escape. That victim, Amanda, was left with scars and guilt. He seeks to interview her, but she is reluctant to reveal why she feels guilty. With her attacker still in town, she moves in to the chief’s house for added protection. This is a romance novel—they are both attracted to each other but are unsure how to continue. The plot is excellent with some nice subplots. The chief sort of drove me crazy with his stoicism.
