She has to intercept the kill codes he has sold to a third party. If she can’t stop that handoff, the devastating attack will collapse the power grid and throw the nation into a state of anarchy.

Hiking into the canyon in the midst of a violent storm, crossing paths with an assassin, and tracking Blitz down the Rio Grande is all part of her job. But when a civilian is violently injured, Allison understand that Blitz has crossed a threshold of violence that could send them all careening into the abyss. And then there’s her personal vendetta to consider. She will capture Blitz, and she will interrogate him about her father’s murder.

Support and Defend, the first book in Vannetta Chapman's new Allison Quinn suspense series, had me glued to the page from the first chapter. A Department of Homeland Security agent, Quinn is undercover as a park ranger at the Grand Canyon National Park trying to stop a major cyber terrorist attack. Chapman does an incredible job of nailing the details of how such a cyber attack would be carried out and how government agencies would work together to stop it. She's created a tough, emotionally scarred heroine that I found myself truly liking. In fact Chapman has filled Support and Defend with several endearing characters who impact on Quinn's mission and her self-image. The Grand Canyon setting is an added perk. This new series is further evidence of Chapman's creative dexterity in writing in multiple genres, including Amish romances, cozy mysteries, and dystopian. Her fans are in for a treat.

This book was exciting, sit at the edge of your seat good! Definitely no fall asleep moments here! I stayed up late with this one. What is so scary to think about is the reality factor going on here. It is a very believable storyline which is packed with action. The writing is clearly educated, fascinating and well researched. You won't want to miss this book!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

I think this book may well be Ms. Chapman's best suspense book to date!!! I think I have read all of her books, and loved them all. But this one....the action is amazing, and while I've never been to the Grand Canyon I could picture the landscape vividly. I love the characters Chapman comes up with, and I'm invested in Allison Quinn!!! Did I mention the action??? You will not get bored while turning these pages and if you're like me you will talk to the scene, as in "No, don't go around that corner! NO don't trust that person!" Or at least I did!!! Can't wait for the next one....
I was given a copy of this book with no promise of a review. All opinions are my own.

It never fails to amaze me how authors can take me to the places they write about. Take Support and Defend, for instance. I could HEAR the thunder. I could SEE the lightning and the river during the storm. I could FEEL the fear while crossing the bridge. How do authors DO that???

This book obviously had me in its grasp from the first line. If you enjoy thrills, suspense, mystery, action, and who-done-it books, this one needs to be added to your TBR! It's a thrill ride!

Suburbia of the early 1950s needed a reliable power grid!

The lifestyle of suburbia has been dependent on a reliable power grid since the early 1950s. Interestingly, the telephone system of the 1950s had a massive amount of backup power. As computers became smaller and more reliable, some hackers walked away. Others evolved into the cybercriminals of today.

I don’t know what an emergency plan for a long term power outage at our current level of technology would look like. Far too much of the technology that we use everyday requires electricity from the power grid…

Support and Defend is an interesting story about the types battles that might happening behind the scenes to keep our power on and our technology working. I’m looking forward to the next installment in the series.

Allison Quinn exhibits all the necessary attributes of a top-notch Homeland Security agent--courage, skill, stamina, and single-minded resolve to catch and stop the bad guys. But is her dedication to the job taking a toll on her humanity? It's a question she'll ask herself more than once during the course of this mission, but she'll prove her heart and determination are both as big as the Grand Canyon.

This latest thriller by Vannetta Chapman kept me turning pages. I'll be looking forward to Allison Quinn's next adventure!

“The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.” Add caffeine tablets and a steady trigger finger, and you have a pretty good picture of Allison Quinn’s M.O. I really enjoyed this thriller and the way Chapman wove the enduring beauty of the Grand Canyon with the imminent danger of a deadly cyber attack. Whether it was emotional drama or physical attack, her tight writing made me feel I was RIGHT THERE (not totally a good thing, since it cost me several more gray hairs!). Besides the razor-focused Agent Quinn, there were plenty of well-developed characters who either won my heart (Tate, Zack) or disgusted me (wow…take your pick of the baddies!). Finally, I also liked that the ending wasn’t hurried - that there was time for reflection and a good build-up for the next book in this series. I really can’t think of a way to improve this series except to move up the next release date. Read it and see if you don’t agree.

I had the opportunity to read this book, and I am so glad I did. The story was wonderful. The characters were believable. I especially loved Allison, Tate and Zack. It all came together to where I had a hard time putting it down. I loved the premise of a cyberterrorist attack, that if successful, would basically eliminate all of our technology. No electricity, no computers, no cell phones, utter chaos ensuing, etc. Scary! And to think, this is not out of the realm of possibility in real life. In short, this is one of those books that I hope Hollywood discovers – I would be the first in line to see it on the big screen!

At this point, you may be wondering why I’ve only given the book 4 stars. Well, to be honest, the book was like riding a bike on a dirt road. I would be humming right along, and then hit a ‘rock’ or a ‘pothole’, and I would be pulled from the story. Blame the editor, and perhaps a little of my own OCD. However, I would be reading, totally immersed, and then all of a sudden there would be an extra word. Or a word missing. Or a word misused. I expect a certain amount of that in any book I read, but by page 150, I decided to take note of how many times I was pulled from the story. This is what I found.

Between pages 150 and the end of the book, I stumbled upon 8 potholes. Thus, my 4-star rating. Potholes and all, this is definitely a book worth reading!

I received an advance review copy of ‘Support and Defend’ for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Received as a review copy from Booksirens, this is an honest review. Support and Defend is a smart and sophisticated and harrowingly realistic thrill ride as Allison Quinn is on the hunted to find a man known as Blitz, who along with others are hoping to bring down the US electrical grid and ushering their world where privacy is paramount to them; all set against the rugged beauty of the Grand Canyon.

Highly recommended.

great story

This was a fun read. I personally loved the inclusion of the horse component. Not being familiar with the park, I could still feel like I was right there on the trails throughout the action. Highly recommend this book.

Support and Defend

This book was up and running from the start. The intensity of the story line and the characters was great. I haven't read a book like this in a long while. DHS- FBI working together on a cyber mission was good. The National Park was great and the interesting details about the park. Thanks VC for a great adventure in my mind!

Support and Defend by Vannetta Chapman features Homeland Security agent Allison Quinn, who is tasked with thwarting a plot to take down a significant portion of the power grid—an attack that could endanger millions of lives. Normally, books about cyber warfare aren’t something I’d gravitate toward, but this is my second book in the series, and I’m completely hooked. Packed with action and mystery, it’s a solid 4.5 out of 5 for sure.

You will be hooked immediately once you start reading this book! Apart from significant scenes in a computer war room of sorts, the plot takes places almost entirely in Grand Canyon Nation Park, which the author brings vividly to life, along with the protagonist, Allison, as we follow her determined law enforcement pursuit of a group of “bad guys” who are part of a nefarious plot that could cripple the country and kill thousands. The characters are well described, and each one presents the possibility of being either an ally or enemy. The effects on Allison of exhaustion and sleep deprivation as she races against the clock seem particularly realistic. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this!

This is an interesting read, I really liked the main characters & the general scenario of the storyline. I found it wast a little slow in places despite the action in other parts, but over all a well written plot, great descriptions of the area the book is set in made it an enjoyable read.

If you tend towards paranoia, beware! This one is about cyberterrorists trying to take out the power grid for North America. There was a widespread power outage in California while I was reading this book! Chapman has an uncanny ability to create gripping thrillers ripped straight from the headlines. I may have to stop reading these thrillers. Solar flares, power grid failures, cyber terrorists -- oh my! Her series' of thrillers have all of the action and suspense, a little violence (not too graphic), no inappropriate sexual content, and so far I have only run across one mild expletive.

A threat against the national grid needs to be neutralised and DHS agent Allison Quinn is leading the charge. With a drop scheduled at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Allison has built her cover story by working as a park ranger to blend in as she mitigates the danger. However, when civilians become involved, the job gets much more complicated.

While the plot was rich with detail, the female main character had a coldness about her that didn't endear her to me. And, while thrillers tend not to be character-driven, this story required a decent amount of rapport with the one character with whom the reader spends the most time. Additionally, I would have preferred a more abbreviated version of the hiking scenes which, while realistic, stretched my patience. Finally, a needless piece of violence had me frowning.

On the other hand, there were things I liked about the story. Most of these items are specific and will be covered by the spoiler tag.

This story, for me, is an aeroplane book; one that can hold the imagination for the duration of a flight. I recommend Support and Defend for those readers looking for a little spice, but nothing heavy.

Allison is a homeland security agent who's working to stop a cyber terrorist. Her character has grit, honor, and tenacity. When plan A gets compromised she goes to plan B seamlessly! I liked her sense of country and patriotism, and she's a lot stronger and fiercer than many men. This story was action, danger, and drama edge of your seat suspense all the way through. I've never been to the Grand Canyon, but I enjoyed the scenic descriptions. This was an inspirational and impactful read. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.

Oh my goodness! What a book by Vannetta Chapman….a thriller as Allison Quinn a Homeland Security Agent stops a cyber attack at the Grand Canyon! This book is full of suspense and I felt like I was watching a movie instead of reading! Allison is top notch and I loved her strength and stamina. I most definitely want to read this whole series!

I have always liked any book written by Vannetta Chapman. I always thought she was a Christian Author and wrote Christian fiction books. This story had a few profanities in it. I don't remember that from past books. The story was good and fast paced but did seem to drag on at times.

I received an ARC through "Booksirens" and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This story begins with Allison hiking up to the top of the Grand Canyon to rest. She is currently on assignment for DHS and is undercover working at the Nayional Park. 6 months earlier she was told about a plot to disrupt the national grid in both the U>S. and Canada. While resting in her hotel room, she received a call and was told to hike back down to Phantom Ranch because the individual that was to transfer the codes was there and she needed to be there to discover who the codes were going to. Since it was night, she would need to get someone else to go down the trail with her. She paired up with Tate, a sr. member of the Park Rangers, for the trek down. Her plan was to be there before sunrise so that she was able to get eyes on the suspected individual. The trek down was not easy as they had to deal with heavy rain in addition to another couple of incidents that they ran into.

She made it down in time and made arrangements to follow Blitz to be around when the code transfer happened. Her orders were that she would be backup for another group of agents. She discovered that Blitz would be going on a rafting trip and she would need to follow.

Follow along as Allison follows Blitz and learn what obstacles she needed to overcome. Learn what backups were in place from the organization that developed the codes in addition to how everything worked out in the end.

This is definitely a book that you should read.

None of the terrorists’ plot makes much sense, and I’ve been working in IT for approaching forty years. Nor is its unravelling here told in a particularly exciting fashion: the descent into the Grand Canyon seems to take place in real time, and doesn’t serve much point. Chapman does seem to have done her homework, and it feels like there is a decent sense of location (I’ve only peered into the Canyon, never gone into it). But this rapidly becomes more of a slog, with problems of pacing, a climax which left me genuinely flicking ahead to see if that was really it (sadly, it was), and a lengthy coda, serving no significant purpose. As an Arizona resident, I’m somewhere between disappointed and embarrassed.

Support and Defend ( Allison Quinn #1 )
A brand new series by Vannetta Chapman that is a very interesting-real like story. Support and Defend will have you on the edge of your seat till the end. Allison Quinn is really an agent for Homeland Security and tracking Cyber attacks on our country, but she has gone under cover as a park ranger. She is also trying to find some answers about her dad’s death. Love the story and the characters, both were well written. I think that Allison is a very brave woman doing what she is doing. Will she be able to stop these cyber attacks? I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
