If you're looking for a steamy historical romance novel, then Surrender to the Duke today!
Surrendering to the Duke is a historical romance novel of approximately 99,000 words with no cheating between the MMC and FMC, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed HEA. It contains adult language and scenes that are simply scandalous.

Should I read in order? This is Spark’s first full historical debut and the first in her Lords of Desire series
Basic plot: Michael returns from war, now a duke after the loss of his brother, and comes face to face with his dark secret – his love for his brother’s wife.
Give this a try if you want: - 1921 (Interwar Years) - English country manor setting (Hampshire?) - Hero needs an heir - Duke hero, duchess heroine - Taboo feel – brother’s wife - friends to lovers - Unrequited love - Celibate hero - historical tidbits throughout (This feels pretty well researched with lots of fun knowledge of the time period woven within) - bit of a dirty talking hero - this hero LOVES to go down on his woman - praise kink - protective hero - “Who did this to you” vibes - bearded hero - silver fox hero (he’s in his 30s but has gray at his temples) - high steam – I have it at 7 scenes because I merged a number of them that were close to this might feel even hotter to you - kink – praise kink, bondage, light spanking, nipple stimulation
Ages: - Heroine is 24, hero is 34
First line: “Are you quite, quite ready for your surprise?”
My thoughts: First, can we talk about this gorgeous cover??? I adore it, so so much. Going to be getting this in print 🥰 But, as many have pointed out in our discussion in Upturned Petticoats group - it doesn't really fit the 1920's vibe we might be expecting from an Interwar Period romance. I believe Sparks is working on a period appropriate cover for book 2!
I enjoyed the nod to some realism we joke about in the romance community – how many dukes ARE THERE REALLY??? And how many are not on death’s door??? Not our hero though, of course….😏
So, so much that I loved about this novel. For it to be a debut was just wonderful. The writing was a pleasure and I really enjoyed reading Sparks’s prose. I loved the time period of this one – it was really fun to get into the 20th century in England.
Emmeline is a joy as a heroine. I really loved her. She has a lot she’s overcoming and Michael is really sweet with her and perfect for her. I’ll note that she has some serious trauma in her past (under my spoiler warning in content warnings below) and it does play a pretty big part of the story.
Michael is just *swoon. He’s so, so wonderful. I love him so much. I am rather soft-hearted for unrequited love from the hero – hero pining is just my favorite. And the fact that it’s a touch taboo as he’s pining for his brother’s wife, well it just enticed me that much more. He is really sweet, protective, gentle but so naughty in the bedroom. Love!
The steam in this book is really fun. I had a couple issues with it (below in specifics spoiler) but overall, damn, this is the steam I am here for! Loved all these scenes.
My issues with this book were just personal preference – I don’t think a lot of this will bother others. But I prefer my books on the more ‘simple’ side with lots of character focus and this novel got a bit too crazy for me towards the end. I’ll get into specifics so please don’t view if you don’t want spoilers. Overall I really enjoyed so much about this novel. So, so much. And Stevie Sparks is officially on my authors to stalk list. I’m really excited for her future releases – especially if she includes the characters we met here because they were all quite delightful!
Specifics
Quotes/spoiler-y thoughts: “Yes,” she admitted – to herself, to him. “I want you inside me.” Instead of ceasing her torment, Michael elongated it. His fingertips leisurely traced the outline of her entrance, as though every nerve inside her body wasn’t screaming out for more. He tutted. “Manners, Emmeline. Shall we try that again?” “I want you inside me,” she obeyed. “Please. Please. Please.” “Good girl,” he snarled into her ear, plunging his fingers deep inside her. --- “So what you’re telling me,” he murmured between kisses, “is that you need to fuck me to marry me. Have I got that right?” --- When they reached her bed, he paused. “If you’re taking requests,” he grinned, “then I want you to sit on my face.” --- “I missed the sounds you make when you come against my tongue.” His eyes flicked over to the folly, ignoring her needy gasp. Yes, that’ll do nicely. He had intended to check it was ready for guests to stay in during the ball. “Get in the fucking folly before I tear your clothes off where you stand.”
Content warnings: - Heroine was orphaned at a young age - Sexual/physical assault and neglect The heroine was given to her aunt (her mother’s twin) and her uncle where she was abused as a child - Death of the heroine’s first husband (it was a good but short marriage and he was away for most of it) - War injuries hero suffered severe wounds from war including bayonet wounds with extreme scarring on his torso - Addiction concern of side character using opium and cocaine - Mention of British military being in Ceylon - Infidelity heroine comes across photos of her dead husband with another woman implying cheating - later it’s found out he also had a child with her - Death hero mercy kills his own brother
Author provided content warnings: war, spousal death, pregnancy, guns, knives, physical abuse, physical injuries, CSA, war horses and their injuries Locations of kisses/intimate scenes: Safe sex? Not really – they are talking of marriage but the hero blows it in her before they are married (both have been celibate for a long time though) 28% - kiss 32% - kiss 33% - kisses 37% - 🔥 touches, fingering for her in a hired cab 39% - oral for her, hero comes in his pants (at the inn) (really close to prior scene, so combining flames) 43% - 🔥 oral for her (sitting on his face) followed by a hand job for him 49% - 🔥 hand job for him, oral for her 59% - 🔥 bondage in the folly – hero ties her wrists together and gives her a nipple stimulation orgasm. 62% - missionary (close to prior scene so combining flames) 71% - 🔥 bath touches and exploration, spanking that leads to desk sex with a mirror followed by another shorter scene 96% - 🔥blow job 97% - oral for her, missionary (close to prior scene so combining flames) 99% - 🔥 sex (epilogue sex)
This was such a well-written, enjoyable book! I like that the couple had a solid friendship before becoming romantic. Both of the characters were so physical and emotionally scarred. I enjoyed watching these two help heal one another. I definitely see these two going the distance!
My one problem was the sex scenes. Yes, they were very hot! Normally, I would have enjoyed the crude language, BDSD, and Michael being so domineering, but it didn't make sense for this couple. Emmeline had been sexual abused at the age of 12. It would have been more logical for Michael to give Emmeline some of the control in the bedroom. Little things would give her flashbacks, but apparently not spanking
Besides that one flaw, the rest of the book was very well done! I'm looking forward to the other characters' stories.
Simply brilliant storytelling! I cannot believe this is a debut novel and am so looking forward to reading more of the author’s historical romances (keep ‘em coming please, Ms Sparks).
This was a story that held my attention, filled with true love, heartache, villains, pining, soooo much angst, sweetness, emotional trauma, tenderness, anguish…Yep, an awful lot going on here but the author wove a beautifully compelling tale that never once left me feeling overwhelmed.
And I cannot not mention the unbelievably hot sexytimes; just the perfect mix of eroticism and lust and love and tenderness and, and, oh my. (Michael loooves to go down and those scenes were so fkn hot I was dyin over here 🥵.)
Michael paused, taking a step back. “What’s wrong?” she asked. Had he changed his mind? “Nothing is wrong.” His voice was jagged, rougher than she’d ever heard it. “I’m simply deciding which part of you I want to lick first.”
The way he loves Emmeline, with his body, and with his heart and soul, earned Michael a special place on my book boyfriends shelf.
I could not get enough of Michael and Emmeline, characters crafted with such depth and love. I truly felt that the author loved these wonderful characters she created, and I fell in love with them, too.
”Though you are wrong in one respect.” An anxious crease marred her forehead. He smoothed it away, figuratively and literally. “This courtship—that is what it’s like to be loved by a man. Because I love you with my heart and soul, darling Emmeline. I love you. I cherish you. I adore you. And I’ll continue to do so for as long as my heart beats. Because it beats for you.”
Highly recommended!
TW: child abuse remembered (physical and sexual, and the enduring trauma still present years later), and others. Please be sure to check out the warnings before reading.
We picked this one up because we were intrigued by the setting and premise: set during the Interwar Period/Entre-Deux-Guerres, Michael was a soldier in WWI who's returned to claim his dukedom. His brother died in the war, so Michael was never meant to inherit. He's been feeling a lot of guilt about his new role for many reasons. The foremost reason? He's been in love with his brother's wife (now widow), Emmeline, since they first met.
So when his mother suggests that he and Emmeline should marry (it's just logical!), he's simultaneously intrigued and wary. Can he take on his brother's role in more ways than one?
Emmeline has her own issues to overcome before she can marry again. Due to an incredibly traumatic childhood, she is leery of the bedroom*. When she confides in Michael, he decides that the best way to convince her that they should get married is by "courting" her. And by courting her, we mean by taking her to bed and proving just how good it can be.
And here, dear caption reader, is where we were also convinced that marrying Michael was the right choice for Emmeline, 'cause he's got MAD bedroom skillz. 🥵 This book is SMOKING hot and includes scenes in a yacht, only one bed at the tavern/brothel, the gamekeeper's cottage, and (of course) the ducal suite.
25-Word Summaries:
Meg: Michael’s got the “Michael Sterling” problem: he met the love of his life … at her wedding to another man. Luckily (?) his bro’s dead now… Laine: The Hapsburg strategy of marrying relatives to consolidate power and resources works best when the pair isn't related and they have a lot of sex.
*Do note that there are some serious content warnings, including childhood SA, PTSD, graphic descriptions of medical procedures, and scenes of violence. Sparks does a great job of including these in the foreword.
This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.
This was such a unique Historical Romance. Set between the World Wars in a Downton Abbey style England in the midst of change. The aristocracy is in turmoil and many young men have PTSD and second sons have become Dukes without wanting too.
This was a beautiful romance between a young widowed single mother and her dead husband's brother who has now become the duke. Her and her daughter have been staying safely with her in-laws and feeling very loved there. More loved than she ever was with her birth family, where she was abused and neglected until the previous duke whisked her away to become a duchess. But he was at war for most of their marriage and now he's gone...
When her mother-in-law wishes to keep her and her granddaughter safe, she encourages her son, Michael to pursue her. Never knowing that he has more feelings hidden down deep than they even know. Forbidden feelings that he has studiously been avoiding for years now.
This romance had so many layers and I loved watching it unfold. There is trauma to unpack and love that is blossoming.. and there is also a lot on the line. I loved watching Michael bring Emmeline out of her shell and teach her things about her body she never knew in her Marriage of Convenience with his brother. But she is determined not to enter such an arrangement again, not even for the safety of her and her child. Only true love will convince her to ever wed again.
I found this so romantic, steamy, angsty, and sweet. It was also darker than it may seem. So check the triggers for this one. But it was also deeper and more rich than I expected as well.
4.5 stars 4 on the spice scale
CW: childhood trauma and SA, attempted assault, death of a husband, PTSD
Okay but not my favorite. It couldn’t decide if it was Regency, Victorian, or Roaring Twenties era, and that made the characters and scenes hard to visualize. The premise was definitely intriguing, but I didn’t care for the author’s writing style. Too clunky, and sometimes the characters’ actions didn’t make a lot of sense.
3.5 stars. Surrendering to the Duke is a forbidden (she’s his late brother’s wife), marriage of convenience, age gap, single mom, historical romance! Please note this book is filled with very heavy content throughout the entire story and I have CW listed at the end of this review.
Emmeline is a widowed Duchess and has her young daughter Dora. She’s still living at the ducal estate with her in-laws (her mother-in-law and sister in laws). She was actually in an arranged marriage with her late husband and while they didn’t have a marriage of romantic love, they did have a relationship built on protection and friendship, before he died during WWI when she was pregnant. Now Emmeline’s brother-in-law Michael is back from war and is the Duke. Michael’s mother and sister are pushing him to marry and suggest he marry Emmeline to make sure she and her daughter Dora remain at the estate as well.
I did really like the angst in here of Michael being into Emmeline since the moment he saw her years ago. He actually spotted her across a ballroom and was so mesmerized that it wasn’t until he got close that he saw his brother’s arm around her waist. He’s been hopelessly into her ever since and hasn’t even paid attention to anyone else. When he tells Emmeline about the idea of them marrying, she says she wants a marriage of love this time around so he suggests a courting period!
This one I really did like a lot of, but there was a lot of different plots added in that I felt like was too much at times and distracted from other points in the story. The pacing of it all just didn’t quite hit for me. I also love the cover but was thrown off when I started reading and realized it is set following WWI, the cover doesn’t really give that period vibe but it’s pretty. This story is very heavy and the mentions of things from the past are brought up throughout the entirety of the story. Emmeline was sent to live with her aunt and uncle after her parents died when she was 3. Now in life she just wants happiness and love for her and her daughter, and I loved how protective of a mother she is.
CW: childhood sexual assaults, PTSD, physical abuse, war trauma and injury, graphic descriptions of medical procedures, scenes of violence
Mixed thoughts about this book… it’s an interesting story set in England post WWI with a heroine who is a widow and suffered traumatic rapes by her uncle as a young girl. She was married to the hero’s brother who was killed in the war. The hero who was also in the war inherits the dukedom from his brother. Their courtship proceeds as they progress from being friends to lovers and she learns how to be in a trusting, loving and fulfilling relationship.
I thought the many lengthy scenes of sex, especially oral sex, overshadowed the story ( I’ve read a bazillion HRs and l really like a good erotic romance book … Robin Schone, April Moran for example). But in this book there wasn’t a balance between the actual story / plot and the sex. Also, thought the hero’s use of domination during sex (tying her up and spanking) was premature in the story … way too soon for a woman who suffered horrible sexual abuse as a young girl and had an unfulfilling marriage.
Another quibble … the frequent use by the hero and heroine of the f**k word in their conversations. This is 1920, the Downton Abbey time period and I just can’t see Lady Mary or any of the men in that show actually using that word with ladies around. To make this story more believable it should have been much more limited and probably not used in mixed company.
Overall, the setting felt true to the time period but the dialogue did not … it came across as much more modern. This could have been a really good story if it had better balance in the plot … cut out some of the oral sex scenes for example. Tighten it up. It did do a great job of exploring trauma… sexual and from being in a horrific war and healing from trauma .., and intertwining that in a romance.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
It took a while to get into the book and characters. Some passages were too descriptive for me so I skimmed them. The steam is off the charts! I wasn’t expecting the third act to occur the way it did. I won’t spoil it though.
Complex plot with so many secrets, baddies and OTT tropes. The h had been abused for years, her husband was kind but as he didn't love her, it was just another kind of abuse. Now widowed, she's accepted her life and is very kind. The H is her husband's brother, who has loved her for years. They get their HEA but the drama is OTT and for me it became funny and overdone.
Buyer Beware : CW seems to be hidden for this one. Emotional, physical, and sexual abuse happened to the heroine as a child and is discussed throughout the book. It's a heavier book.
Do you ever feel like you're letting your friends down when you didn't love a book as much as they did? That's me with this book.
I think part of what happened was that I went in with Captial E Expectations. I wanted a pining Hero and guilt ridden Heroine.
What I felt I got was an overeager Hero and a Heroine with abuse PTSD.
Emotional, physical and s3xual abuse on the Heroine as a child is a large and, Surprise!, part of the book. No CW posted on Amazon where I bought this. I feel this was a big miss because this was a very large aspect of the book. I wasn't Capital E Expexting to be dealing with trauma as I began this book. So that was a bummer.
I also would have rathered the Hero play a little harder to get. Everything was almost too easy, they were too happy to get together. Sheesh. Make him work for it already.
The plot went overlong for me, adding sick bed and secret baby elements. I was pretty checked out at that point.
Oh, and I am beyond confused as to the time period of when this book is set. The cover shows a gown, and a child is given horseback lessons in chapter 1. They are focused on him being the Duke and needed an heir, and the brothers went off to war. Sounds Regency, right? But then the Hero would ride a motorcycle and the Heroine had on a cardigan. There was also, sometimes, electricity.
Anyway, even with my grumbles, it's not a bad book. There truly are 9 adult scenes (even if i don't understandor agree with his methods of helping her cope through trauma by way of light bdsd, but to each his own), a wide range of interesting folk, a wonderful murder plot twist and an excellent lead up to the next book!
4/5 This is a book that could easily be five stars, if it had a bit more review from a good editor. Sparks is a beautiful writer. Her words are a pleasure to read. She really writes a good romance novel, but the pacing and length is off. The first half is largely about the heroine navigating intimacy, with a background of trauma. The second half of the book is where all the action happens. If those two aspects of the story could have been more effectively blended, the book would have been stronger. In spite of this criticism, the book is charming and a good read. The characters and the romance are great. I hope to see Stevie Sparks write more books and gain more success. With just a little more editing, I really feel she could be a GREAT romance author. I recommend this book!
This was such a beautiful romance! The longing and love Michael had shone through the pages. I loved the he was set on courting Emmeline so she could fall in love with him like he was for the last 5 years. I liked Michael's family too and how supportive of Em they were. What brought my rating down was how long each chapter was. It felt like i was being dragged with the story. Again the romance was beautiful and touching, I really loved that these two souls found each other and I honestly can't wait for the next book.
Michael loved Emmaline but she married his brother. Now back from the war, Emmaline is a widow and Michael is the new Duke of Foxcotte. His mother declares he should marry Emmaline as he needs a duchess and an heir. During their courtship, feelings and secrets are revealed. Now the two must work through their past shadows to see if a true relationship is even possible.
I had mixed feelings while reading this. Sometimes the story read alone fine and at other times it dragged on. Some of the storyline suffered from areas going on and on with dialogue not really needed. It started to loose my interest. Then at other times it meshed along well. The last bit seemed to be a bit of mixed up jumble in many was as there is alot going on to finish up the book.
I was also mixed about the two main characters. Em and Michael are great characters with lots of depth to them, but at times I didn't care for how they acted within a scene. Case in point- spoiler--
When Michael has Em tied to a chair and she begs him to stop but he says 'too bad'. While I love sexy stories, most of the on screen steam seemed a bit forced at times and him always telling her that she was a good girl for doing those things for him was a complete turn off and with her past trauma this was a huge red flag. Also things seemed to happen way too fast in the steam category for someone who comes from a traumatic past and keeps having flashbacks. I love my steam in stories but it needs to be appropriate and fit the story and many times, these scenes to me, did not.
Overall this is an ok story. The author does have good writing talent but I like my stories succinct and to the point with no gratuitous steam and this waffled on a little bit too much for me. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is a new author for me. I saw her book mentioned in one of the FB groups I joined and thought it looked good but a bit hesitant.
You see, I had just starting reading another new author, the day before I wanted to start this one and had read probably 3 hours total and was still at only 18% into the story when just the day before that, I had actually finished a book I had been reading, read 2 more books and then started that one book. So it's obvious I couldn’t get into it so was hoping for better luck with this one.
Well, in less than an hour I was already at 18%. Definitely a better start. I actually finished this book the same day. I will say I don’t read synopsis’ anymore so had no I idea what this book was about but looking at the cover it did seem like it might be my genre. Unfortunately, it’s about 100 years later than the era I normally like to read and therefore definitely reads WAY too modern for me but with all that being said, I did like this story. I liked Emmeline and Michael. Sex was super hot. Loved how even the unpleasant scenes were so well written. Loved everyone's back story. Overall a really good read for a new author.
I will definitely read book 2, just to see what happens.
This was so great! Loved reading a HR set in the 1910s for a change. I wish this author had more books out already. Her writing is lovely and the spice was 🤌🥵
I am excited to be a stop on Romance Me With Books tour of 𝑺𝒖𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒖𝒌𝒆 𝗯𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀. It’s available now on Kindle Unlimited so download it today!
This is a sweet, steamy historical fiction romance. The book touches on issues of grief, physical, sexual and mental abuse, and PTSD. There isn’t explicit descriptions of these triggers, and the author does a good job of focusing more on the path forward than the actual traumas.
Michael returns from WWI to Scarlett Castle as the Duke of Foxcotte after his brother died in the war. He is greeted by his mother and his brother’s widow, Emmeline. His mother is determined to get Michael and Emmeline together to get more grandchildren and secure the estate. The couple decides to court to see if a marriage of convenience is something they can enter into, but soon sparks are flying and they realize that it could be much more.
I loved the chemistry between Michael and Emmeline and the spicy scenes were hot. Their teasing and flirting was fun to read. The patience that Michael displayed with Emmeline was very sweet. Just as Emmeline got comfortable and showed growth, matters were complicated by the unexpected appearance of her cousins, children of the parents that abused her. It added tension to the story, but I thought this went off the rails a bit toward the end. My only other complaint is that I felt the book dragged a bit in the middle and some things seemed to be needlessly repeated. These issues are minor, however, and others may not feel this way.
A truly remarkable story unlike anything I’ve read in this genre. Stevie Sparks does not shy away from the darkness of the world, she embraces it in a masterful way allowing it to make the lightness shine even brighter. Emmeline is a character who has withstood countless traumas and tragedies, all she has ever wanted is to be loved. She has the opportunity of creating the family she always wanted by accepting a marriage of convenience with her late husband’s brother. She would continue to be surrounded by the home & family he gave her but would be able to give her daughter siblings and endless happiness. Little does she realize, Michael has loved her since the very first time he saw her. Their story allows her time to grow in love with him, and time for them both to heal their wounds. Bonded in trauma and their shared losses, these two are a remarkable couple. The story is told in a whirlwind style that will keep you glued to the edge of your seat. So many shocks, it was a true rollercoaster of emotion. Not to be outdone by the emotion or surprise element of the story, Sparks packs these characters with practically combustible chemistry. This book is hot, hot, hot. Michael is the perfect blend of sweet sincerity and commanding heat. You will not be able to put it down!
I always have mixed feelings when I read a book from an author that is new to me. I'm always excited, but nervous at the same time. Well, let me tell you, I'm so happy I got to read this book because it was exceptional. Surrendering to the Duke is book one in the Lords of Desire series, and I can't wait to read the rest. For a debut story I also thought it was very well written. While there is romance, it's also got some mystery and spice thrown in. This story will make you laugh, cry, and swoon. Michael and Emmeline will hook you from the beginning. This is one that you really don't want to miss out on. It was an incredible read from start to finish.
Rating 4.5 For a debut novel, this is a hit. I enjoyed the story as it is well written, descriptive in what is happening and has excellent characters, with the exception of a few. I love how Emmeline is featured as a strong young woman who had endured abuse as a child and survived to be the wonderful young woman of the day. Now she is a widow with a beautiful young daughter, Dora, and a man who wants to marry her. The author has Michael as a caring man who has secretly loved Emmeline prior to her marriage to his brother. There is a lot happening in this story with the romance of Emmeline and Michael at the forefront. There is a lot of suspense, secrets and danger in this story. I am curious about Oliver and possibly his much deserved demise. There is a lot going on in this story which makes you want to keep on reading to see what happens next. This is a story that is definitely worth reading and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and are voluntarily leaving a review.
I can't believe this is Stevie Sparks debut novel! It was amaaaaaazing! I loved the characters, especially Michael! 😍 There was a moment there where I was very scared, but all is well that ends well 😉 Emmeline had a terrible childhood, and I wasn't sure of Theo, but in the end, I love him and I wish his life hadn't been so tragic... The relationship evolved beautifully! Michael was in from the first, but it took a while for Emmeline to get over her emotional scars, though she'll carry them forever. The plot was immaculate, with many twists and turns, beautifully executed! I can't wait to read more about Annabelle and her grudge! All in all, I strongly recommend this book to any historical romance fans! I know you'll love it like i did!
I recently received an ARC of this book and I was pleasantly surprised with the context of the book. The book was well thought out and from the beginning you got a sense of who Michal and Emmeline are. It was intelligent and witty but a bit spicy. The spicy scenes were written in a way that you were just about salivating for more. It had triggers about abuse but the author was honest and didn’t allow Emmeline to be consumed to the point she couldn’t move forward. Michael dealt with the abuse with such compassion that was needed for such a very sensitive subject. For a new comer, I enjoyed the book and felt it was such a great job for a new comer.
Brief Summary: Young widow Emmeline is happily raising her young daughter when her brother-in-law approaches her with the suggestion that the two of them get married. Having been married before and still processing the horrific sexual and physical abuse that she went through as child Emmeline and the duke embark on an extended courtship in which they get to know one another better in order to determine if they might suit.
What worked? - The time period. The inter-war period between World War One and World War Two is not a typical time period for historic romance but it meant a more unique plot that didn't rely on tired tropes that had been used before. - Both characters were written to be believably flawed without being profoundly broken. Michael is a sweet and dedicated hero who knows what he wants and how to get it, without seeming like a jerk. - Once the characters came to terms with their feelings for one another, the sex scenes were frequent and well-written without being repetitive or dull. Some authors prefer the one-and-done approach to including sex scenes or frequently have the text fade to black, which always leaves me feeling let down. Let me tell you, this text will not let you down when it comes to the frequency and detail of the sex scenes between the characters. Almost all of it worked for me, see the spoiler below for detail about the small part that didn't work for me.
What flopped? - There's a lot going on in the text that could trigger somebody. Read the author's trigger warning on their website before you read this book, otherwise you could very easily be blindsided by some of the themes that are included. - The pacing was weird. The first third of the book is VERY tame and barely mentions sex, sexual arousal, sexual congress (whatever you want to call it). The tame beginning of the book does not match tonally with the rest of the book which is much less tame and mild. Had I not seen a review in which a reviewer mentioned the frequency of the sex scenes, I would have thought that I had picked up a book by a romance author who didn't write sex scenes based on the tone of the first third. If you are somebody that frequently DNF a book, read at least the first third before making your decision.
How well does this book abide by post-Me Too changes to the genre? It's complicated. Emmeline is a CSA survivor. She almost died at the hands of the uncle and his abuse. Michael gets explicit and clear consent from her before and during every sexual interaction. There were two scenes that rubbed me the wrong way though and both of them involved light bondage in which Michael got Emmeline's consent, then tied her up and then the two of them either had sex or messed around. While Emmeline consents to being tied up she doesn't necessarily know what she is consenting to after the tying up portion. Part of safe, sane and consensual sex means communicating what is going to go down in advance because the submissive partner might not always feel comfortable or capable of revoking consent in the middle of a sexual encounter. (Yes, obviously the thrill of not knowing what is going to happen next can totally be a kink, but it takes time to build trust between two people). There's nothing in either scene to suggest that Michael wouldn't stop if Emmeline told him to stop (in fact he even takes the time to verify that she knows that all she has to say is "stop" and he'll stop), but I felt like going straight from vanilla encounters to bondage (especially for Emmeline who is still processing her CSA trauma) was a weird decision that didn't make sense to me pacing-wise. Is this enough to change my rating from a five to a four? No. Just because I wasn't wild about a small part of the book doesn't detract from the overall fact that the text is well-written, easy and enjoyable to read and very engaging. I liked both the hero and the heroine and felt that they were both real and believable without being boring and trite. This worked for me and I will definitely reread it in the future.
As seen on my blog (Jessie's Reading Corner): Surrendering to the Duke is a super steamy, emotional historical romance (set in the early 1920s) that will tug at your heart strings, and have you rooting for Emmeline and Michael from beginning to end!
Emmeline is a widow raising her daughter Theodora with the help of her mother- and sister-in-laws at Scarlett Castle. Orphaned at a young age, and then abused by her aunt and uncle, Emmeline has never known love. Even her marriage to her deceased husband, Theo (the Duke of Foxcotte), was prefaced with him telling her that he cannot love her, but he would keep her safe.
Michael has always loved Emmeline, but when he catches her in his brother’s arms, he resigns himself to a life of servitude under the King, until it’s time to come back home to take over as Duke.
When Theo’s mother, the dowager, hatches a plan of a marriage of convenience to his brother, Michael, the new Duke of Foxcotte, Emmeline proposes a courtship between the two so that they might learn to love each other.
I absolutely loved this story! This might be one of my top 2023 stories I’ve read so far this year! The easy going chemistry between Emmeline and Michael was felt from the very beginning! I loved how we got to witness their friendship turn into courtship, and then turn into a scorching hot romance! Michael had a tricky road to navigate when it came to claiming Emmeline’s heart due to her past trauma and I loved how patient he was with her (and how loving he was towards Dora), but when he’s given the green light…whoa boy, this man has skills!! (Let’s just say, he loves going downtown to eat, and he has a thing for “good girls” 😉)
In addition to the romance, I loved getting to know Michael’s family (his mother, Mary; and his sisters Annabelle and Effie) and can’t wait to see what Stevie does with their characters! I am VERY interested in reading Despising the Duke which is the second book to release in the series (comes out September 10th) that features Annabelle and the Duke of Aylesbourne. Stevie gave us enough breadcrumbs during this story to make me salivate for theirs! What could the Duke of Aylesbourne have done that made Annabelle despise him so? And how much hate s3x is involved? 😈
Fun, witty, and super spicy historical fixtion debut. This was a pleasant surprise! I enjoyed reading the banter between the two MCs, the tension was wonderful and I've found a new swoon worthy book boyfriend.
✔️ Marriage of Convenience ✔️ Age Gap ✔️ Forbidden Love ✔️Friends to Lovers
The timeline of the 1920s was delightful The story does have a taboo feel to it, Emmelines husband had died in the war, and she falls in love with her brother in law. But it was well done. The friends to lovers was so swoon-worthy, and the spice did not make me cringe! 😆 If you like the "touch her and you'll die" type of man, you'll like Michael. But he is so respectful and wonderful.
This does have some content warnings, and I definitely recommend reading over them before starting. But I had so much fun with this book, and I feel in love with the two MCs. My main criticism is that the cover, although gorgeous, does not give me vibes to the time period of the book. This will not be the last book I read by this author!
Surrendering to the Duke is the first book in the Lords of Desire series and follows Michael, a war hero who has reluctantly returned to take over the dukedom after the death of his brother, and Emmeline, his brother’s widow. Michael has secretly loved Emmeline for a long time, but he never said anything because she was married to his brother. Away at war, he pined for her, and, when he returns to take his brother’s place as Duke, he’s shocked when his mother suggests a marriage of convenience. Suddenly, it’s all he can think about. But, now he has to convince Emmeline.
Emmeline has suffered horrible abuse and neglect as a child, and the trauma of her past still haunts her. Now a widowed single mom, she’s determined to give her daughter the happy and safe childhood she never had. When her mother-in-law suggests Emmeline and Michael marry, Emmeline needs convincing. Her first marriage was based on a mutual respect, but this time around she wants love and passion. Luckily for her, so does Michael, and he is willing to put in the work to prove it to her. Theirs is an emotional, romantic, and passionate story that begins with friendship and turns into so much more!
Michael is such a wonderful character and love interest for Emmeline. He’s incredibly kind and patient, and he is s in love with Emmeline. Theirs isn’t a high angst love story, but Michael spends quite a bit of time trying to convince Emmeline to take a chance on him. Considering her past and her desire to have a love-based marriage this time, this is no easy feat, but their chemistry is undeniable. I love that Michael takes the time to woo Emmeline, and he really understands her trauma and supports her throughout her emotional journey. He’s very different from his brother, and his feelings for Emmeline run deep. And the spice – Woohoo! Get a fan, my friends, because there are a lot of super steamy times, and some of the things Michael says in these scenes are blush-inducing!
Other characters are also compelling, as are the layered and heartwarming relationships. Emmeline’s bond with her daughter Dora is so sweet, and Dora’s relationship with Michael is beyond special. And Dora is definitely short for a”Dora”ble because she’s the cutest! I also love that Michael’s family is so supportive of Emmeline. Michael’s brother married her when he found out about the abuse she suffered, and his mother and sister are wonderful and bighearted. It was very easy to root for all of them and to despise those who plot against them.
I really enjoyed this read. It takes place during a time in England that I don’t often read about, and the characters, relationships, themes, and romance are all wonderful. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
I usually try to do spoiler free reviews, and I’m doing to do my best to stick to that, because this book is just one that you HAVE to read to find out for yourself.
This story of Michael and Emmeline is absolutely captivating from start to finish.. This novel isn’t just a romance (which is completely to die for) it’s wrapped up with bits of mystery, an enormous dash of spice and heart gripping twists you couldn’t even imagine.
I found myself in throws of laughter, bouts of heavy tears and down right breathless at passages that’ll have you intensely hot and wondering if you’re in the story right along with them. I’ve never read a book with tropes such as these but I’m ever so glad that I did.. watching Ems strength being slowly uncovered and her coming into her own understanding of this world around her has earned her a position of one of my favorite characters by far that I’ve had the pleasure of reading about.
My suggestion, run not walk to the nearest available place and pre-order/ order your copy of this book. You WONT be disappointed and I can’t wait for the follow up stories to come ✨
Michael inherited a dukedom from his older brother who died while they were fighting in WWI. He has returned to the family estate to claim the title, and his mom is already up his rear end about getting married and producing an heir. Unfortunately Michael has been feelin' some sorta way about this entire situation because not only was this NOT supposed to be his title, he has been desperately in love with his dead brother's wife for years.
Emmeline is a widow and single mother with an entire boatload of childhood trauma to overcome. She and her daughter remained in residence with the dowager after her husband's death as this is truly the only caring family she has ever known. The dowager wants nothing more than to keep both her granddaughter and Emmeline safe...except perhaps for her second son to marry...which gives her an excellent idea. She approaches Michael one morning with the ideal scenario: he should marry Emmeline, of course! Micheal is obviously jazzed about this idea, but Emmeline believes her past makes her the worst candidate for the job. She confides in Michael about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her uncle thinking this will be the ultimate deal breaker, but Michael is a sweet baby angel who refuses to rush her, and asks if she would be open to a courting period (in bed) so they can test the waters.
Ok so first of all--LOOK AT THE COVER!! That has got to be one of the dreamiest book covers I have ever seen. Now that I got that out of the way, this was my first Stevie Sparks novel and y'all!! I loved it. This story is just SO romantic. These characters have deeply cared for one another before they even considered courting, and with a MMC down this bad there was zero chance it wouldn't be swoony. Michael is patient, understanding, and just absolutely wonderful to Emmeline. He shares his own devastating trauma with her as well and their trust adds an extra layer of intimacy to the scenes where the steam was really steamin'! In a cab! On a yacht! In the folly!
Oh also apparently I need to read more Interwar period romance because I was absolutely tickled when a VEHICLE made a cameo. So incredibly novel to a reader used to a good 'ol carriage!
If you liked When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn or Hold Fast by Eliza MacArthur, I think you'll love this one.
I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.
