What happens when an uptight preppy frat boy sets his sights on a punk rock princess? #superherolevelchaos
Zack Worthington's life is a carefully curated performance. Controlled by his politician father, he stands on his mark and recites his lines. There’s no room for deviation, no time for comic books and no patience for obscure Trekkie facts. He's all business, polished to a shine--the sparkling jewel in his father's crown.
Then one night, Zack lays eyes on a girl he can't unsee...
Open minded, self-sufficient, Deaf drummer, Molly Mills is working hard to find her rhythm in a competitive college music program. She's driven to prove herself to nearly everyone, even while living off of packaged noodles and thrift-store clothing.
Watching her alone on the dance floor, punky, free and wild, Zack told himself that opposites attract was totally not a real thing. But a couple days later when he realizes he's the teaching assistant in her research methodologies class, he can't ignore his instincts. He has to know her.
Only Molly isn't interested in his platitudes and superficial chit-chat.
Suddenly, all bets are off because this buttoned up, rule-following rich guy actually wants to be more than meets the eye...

This book grabbed me from the first few pages and I was hooked! It’s so hard to review right now because I loved it so much I don’t know what all to say! While I’ve been reading more books lately with characters that have some sort of disability, this one about a girl who was deaf really blew me away. I learned some really interesting things about how the deaf community may consider certain things rude that for the hearing world wouldn’t be considered that way. I also really enjoyed how much Molly just lived her life and didn’t let her deafness define her other than just that it was a part of her.
And then there was Zack. Gah, such a sweet guy, who just really didn’t know how to be himself because of how or should I say who his father was. He tried so hard with Molly, making so many mistakes, some understandable, others just cute/funny, and still one or two just terrible. While I understood Molly’s feelings about when his dad just showed up that morning, I also disagree with her a bit, because who wants that to be your first meeting with the dad of your current date/relationship, especially knowing what she knew about him from Zack’s stories.
I loved Zack’s nerdiness and how Molly had fun with him with their texting and teasing with the pop culture references. Although I disagree again with her, and maybe a lot of people, because I never really liked Kylo Ren. I always thought of him as a bad guy. Whereas I definitely had moments where I felt for Draco Malfoy and wanted to see him maybe change. I mean Kylo had good parents. Draco had a horrible father, so who had more reason to behave the way they did? Lol, sorry for the ramble on my nerdy opinions.
But this story will probably end up being one of my favorites of the month, if not the year. I keep thinking about so many bits and pieces. I definitely love some of Zack’s mistakes with his signing, like what he mistakenly signed instead of pink. Highly recommend this one, and hoping to read more by this author in the future!
The Senator's son and the Deaf drummer who captures his interest and heart. YES.
Zack is...hmm, how to put this? His father's idea about what a perfect son should look like have pushed down all of Zack's likes and wants and made him into a bit of a bland frat boy. Zack's so used to toeing the line and seeing the things he loves taken from him if they don't fit his father's vision that he's completely unprepared for Molly and his attraction to her. Her punk personality and drive call to him from the first time he lays eyes on her and the boy is SMITTEN.
On Molly's end, being a Deaf student at a non-Deaf university means she has to fight for a lot of things most people take for granted. She doesn't want to like Zack, but she slowly comes around to seeing his kindness and the hurt he tries to keep hidden. And despite knowing it will probably end badly between them, she lets herself fall.
The problem? The specter of Zack's father hangs like a blade over everything Zack does and he's trying to find a way to have a relationship with Molly without his father destroying it because it's not part of the vision he has for his son.
In other words, Zack has some hard decisions to make about how and where he wants his future to go. And Molly need to decide if her bruised heart can handle the hurts that come with Zack's growing pains.
MAN, I liked these two. They were a little nerdy, a little punk, and a whole lot into one another. Even when Zack was making terrible accidental word swaps while interpreting/talking to her. *thumbs up*
Lola West makes her SPRU debut with this adorable and spicy college romance about a preppy frat boy who is hiding his inner nerd and a bad ass, pixie, deaf drummer who is striving to be see and heard for her music.
OMG I love Lola’s writing style! It’s so easy to and cozy to read! I love these characters, they are so diverse and so dynamic! I love this story, it’s so sweet!
Zack is not your typical Frat boy, as much as he would like you to believe he is. He’s not a secret soft and nerdy side that has been all but beat out of him by his asshole father. When he meets Molly as a silence rave and lets loose for a hot minute he realizes what he’s been missing. Molly is just trying to exist as a deaf human in a hearing world while she pursues her her music. Meeting and falling for a hearing man was never in her plans. But now that these two have met there’s no going back, and both are going to have to give a little and heal a little.
The Burn is slow with this one and while steamy the spice is fairly mild. For I college romance I will allow it, it actually was perfect for this two.
I’m excited to read more from Lola she has a good back log but also more in the SPRU!
***************************
This romance is not a favorite, it is far from perfect but I found it very interesting, and it was not a done deal for me with student romances.
Already the "studies" context of the plot isn't the most important part of the story, there are a few scenes that present what the heroes do, the circumstances that make them meet, and then basta! The author focuses on their relationship, their personal issues. I liked the fact that the heroes being young, they make mistakes, and sometimes they make them again... Because they will change all their preconceptions in one go.
Zack is the son of a senator, his father has great expectations of him and he must fit a certain image. Zack is therefore the president of his fraternity, not the thing he hoped to do, but at least he can refrain the goons of his group from doing anything stupid. Deep down, Zack is a geek, he loves SF movies, board games and reading comics, but all that doesn't go well with a sadistic father ready to take him away. Zack doesn't have anyone he can take the pressure off with, doing it with his frat guys would risk thing getting back to his dad.
One evening, his path crosses that of Molly, dressed in punk, pixie hair. Molly is deaf and plays drums, her dream is to become a professional musician. Zack is immediately fascinated by this young woman who does things outside of what society would expect of her. Fortunately, he took ASL lessons, even if he is not very talented, he still manages to communicate with her. When Molly's interpreter fails to show up her in a class, Zack offers to help her.
Molly is not perfect either, her parents are deaf too, they have always taught her to be wary of "hearing people", that they will never be able to understand all the subtlety of deafness. Molly therefore has prejudices, which she will have to learn to overcome if she really wants to be with Zack.
Zack and Molly are young, they always had a certain way of life. Then they realize that it can change, that their life can be whatever they want it to be. The author managed to bring the evolution of the characters in a simple way and it works very well.
I received an ARC from @smartypantsromance today. This is my first book from this author and it won't be my last. I loved this sweet story from beginning to end. I can't recommend it enough.
Zack goes to a silent disco where he sees Molly and is drawn to her. They part on a bad note, so when they see each other again in one of their classes, Molly wants nothing to do with him while Zack is determined to spend more time with her. A lot of this book were tutoring lessons that you don’t see, interesting (I’m assuming) facts about the Deaf community and Zack’s issues with his father.
I liked Molly, but Zack was annoying, and I didn’t agree with how he reacted to some things.
I liked reading about Molly’s perspective on Deaf and hearing people. Zack knows a bit of ASL from high school so he tries to sign to her, and Molly points out some simple/common mistakes he makes, and yet some of the things he says to her use really sophisticated language, and it didn’t make sense that he would be able to sign those. While it’s possible that he said some of them instead of signing, others were explicitly mentioned that he signed.
There were some side characters, but I didn’t think any of them were fully developed. Cora seemed fun, and I might have like Vos too. I liked Molly’s parents when she goes to visit them and their conversation.
I liked some parts of this book, but Zack’s actions ruined the book for me.
This was a slow burn, and an interesting look into Deaf culture.
I had little patience with Zack's continual deference to his father's demands, but that's because I'm older and wiser and learned how to tell people to eff off a long long time ago. But he did learn how to do it eventually. A life skill needed for dealing with psychopaths and sociopaths like his father.
Meanwhile, while Zack is growing a backbone, Molly is wrestling with just how much of a rebel she is going to be.
Zack and Molly are soooo good together! Zack seems like a robot, especially at the beginning..a guy who's decisions are not his own but that of his father..but everything starts to change when he notices Molly. She is such an amazing girl and she ignites a spark in Zack. It's certainly a beautiful story of growing up and deciding what is important and how to live your life.
I adored this book. Molly and Zach are individually interesting characters - especially Molly. I've never read a book where the lead is deaf and some points were brought up I never considered in the hearing world. And a quick visit with Kaitlyn was a also a treat. Looking forward to other books by Lola West.
I really enjoyed this story. The characters were both compelling, each going through a different journey that was really interesting to explore as was watching their relationship grow. As I get older, college age stories are hit or miss for me. I worried briefly about a third of the way through that this was going to be a mess, but I was happy to discover it was very much I hit.
This was the first time I’ve read this author but I will definitely check out other books she has written. I was invested in this book from the first pages. It was my first read that contained a deaf main character and I loved learning about the subject from her perspective.
College romance between a starchy frat president who hides his nerdy real self, and a rock drummer who also happens to be profoundly deaf. The romance is enjoyable and it gives an insight into the world of the Deaf community for those of us that can hear.
It’s fun reading about different people & their perspectives. Helps you learn & grow. Molly is different because she’s deaf, living in a hearing world. Zach can hear and lives a privileged life that has its own problems. But their HEA is a beautiful love story.
Hero was a bit weak. Let’s his father, a senator, control his life. By the end, he finally stands up to him. Unfortunately, we’re left with a HFN. No look into their future.
”We were worlds apart. Total opposites. One punk rock, one preppy. One Deaf, one hearing. One fighting for acceptance, one conforming for it. There were too many bridges to build. I wasn’t strong enough to fight for us both.”
An original opposites attract romance. Zach is un uptight frat boy. She is a reckless Deaf drummer. When their paths cross little did they know that ir will changer their lives and she will help him become a better man and she will find happiness and love.
I love this book. It brought out every emotion in me. The flow of the book throughout makes it even more special. It gave me chance to connect with the characters and absolve the story for what it was. A great read. Loved every bit of it.
I was provided an ARC of this book via the author and Smartypants Romance, as always all opinions are my own. This is the 4th book set in same world as the other books in the Lessons Learned series; however, it is a complete standalone. It does features characters from the other books in the larger Universe, but you don't need to read them prior to diving in here. I do recommend the other books in the series as well as the Hypothesis series by Penny Reid which introduced us to the university setting.
This was such a sweet opposites attract college romance. It does have some steamy bits but for the most part it is pretty slow burn and on the tame side. We have preppy and perfectly poised Zach who is trying to live up to the expectations of his senator father, but it is all an act. Zach is miserable and lost on the inside. Then there is Molly, she lives her life out loud despite being deaf. She knows who she is and what she wants despite it being "unconventional" for her. She is an aspiring and talented drummer, and she isn't going to let being deaf define her worth or stop her from achieving her dreams. Zach on the other hand is always playing the part so his father doesn't get upset, until he meets Molly. Molly makes him want to let loose and be the person no one gets to see.
I really loved this. I attended RIT which Molly mentions in the book and I grew up with a neighbor who was deaf. I don't sign very well anymore, but I have the utmost respect for the deaf and deaf culture. Because RIT houses the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, interpreters, note takers, and other accommodations were common place in our classes and Rochester has a very large deaf community because of the university. Much like anyone else with a disability or impairment, deaf people aren't any less because they can't hear, they just do things a little differently and they are some of the best people you will ever have the pleasure of getting to know. That being said I really enjoyed the character development in this book. Both Molly and Zach go through a self worth and self discovery journey as they navigate their budding romance. They both have preconceived notions of how things are supposed to work in the world, but as they spend time together they realize that life is messy and things don't fit in neat boxes all the time.
I thought Molly and Zach had great banter as they learned to communicate with each other. I especially liked the pop culture references to some of my favorite movie quotes. It made my nerd heart happy!
This is my first book by the author, but it certainly won't be my last!
Wow! Lola West has written an absolutely engrossing, masterpiece of a story! I enjoyed every page and couldn’t put the book down from the second it showed up on my kindle. This book has absolutely lived up to the fantastic-ness that I expected after initially reading the blurb for the book! I mean, come on! A romance story involving a bada**, deaf, drummer girl and a popular frat boy?! Yes please! 😉😘👌🏻 After concluding reading the story, the first thing I want to say is: This book is (simply put) one of the best examples of character development and growth throughout a storyline I have seen in a while. Due in large part to the difference in hearing-ability between the two main characters, Molly and Zack, forcing each of them to see things from the other’s perspective, and the way that dynamic impacted their views of themselves and the world around them, both characters grew as individuals but also as a pair as well. A truly heart-wrenching, heart-warming, and beautiful storyline to experience. I don’t have anything negative to say about this original, well-written romance novel. Lola truly did a superb job of developing and describing the characters in this story, as well as wonderfully depicting emotion(s) and capabilities in each main character throughout every scene. Phenomenal work! Basically this story and these characters are incredible and you need them in your life immediately. Seriously, “The Vinyl Frontier” is hands down one of my favourite smartypants books now! An abundance of emotionally charged angst, sexual tension, and each characters personal view of themselves vs what the other character sees in them, really made this an easy 5 star read for me. To sum up this review in one sentence: Molly and Zack’s story is a must read! 👌🏻 I HIGHLY recommend picking up this book! Once again, I love, love, love this story and know you will too! You cannot go wrong with this smartypants book! 💖 Five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Vinyl Frontier by Lola West is a lovely new adult romance that softly and subtly brings to life a romance between the hearing and deaf world. While this is not my reality and I can not fully attest to the deaf representation, this novel did give me the impression that West took great time and care in bringing this story to light. I felt like many wonderful accessibility issues around deaf people in a primarily hearing environment were handled with understanding and enlightenment. I found Lola West’s writing to be accessible and easily conveyed her thoughts and ideas.
This novel was very well paced and had delicious moments of sweetness and grace, as well as did not shy away from hard topics or feelings. West brings to life two people in the process of becoming adults and learning to stand on their own two feet. This novel also does a wonderful job of showing processes of learning and growth, as well as the strength it takes to forgive. Lola West perfectly brings to life two people who learn and grow from each other and become equal partners. I loved the the heroine has a strong grounding in who she is and what she wants and she will not let anything or anyone tell her otherwise. I love that the hero is able to learn from the heroine to be bold and stand tall and advocate for himself and others.
This is my first novel from Lola West and I was definitely impressed and found this story to be absolutely beautiful and worth reading! I am excited to explore other works by West and hope you find this story as lovely as I did!
Thank you so much to Smartypants Romances for an eARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
It may sound a little crazy, but I think I loved this book based purely on its blurb/synopsis/description (take your pick) I mean, a preppy frat boy & a Deaf punk princess fall for each other? I mean how can you not? Ok, I KNOW how one can’t. But I was validated in my initial reaction not long after Molly and Zack collided for the second time because I wanted and needed them to see just how good they could be together. They definitely come from different worlds and one is fighting to break out of the mold while the other is fighting to stay in it. But as they spend more time together it becomes clear that once they get out of their own ways, they just fit and I loved watching them fall for each other and own who they want to be.
This is my first read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The writing was engaging, the first person POV’s done well and the pacing was very good. I liked getting a glimpse into the Deaf world and culture and learning how they view their world and the world of the hearing. As for the supporting cast of characters, it’s no surprise that Cora and Vos were favs and I can only cross my toes that I get to see them again at some point in the future.

She shook hands like she owned the earth. I envied the technique and shook hands with her any chance I got, trying to commit the feeling to memory.
This was not the kind of girl who stood next to you on the podium as you swore to uphold the law. This was the kind of girl who went with you to the county fair, screamed something profane from the top of the Ferris wheel, and licked the cotton candy off her fingers.
Sure, it might end in a blaze of heartbreak— but maybe every girl should date at least one totally inappropriate guy.
Thing was, I didn’t want dick pics. They weren’t sexy. Mostly they made me want to laugh. Penises, just hanging out without abs or heads, or personalities, looked kinda like the alien cousins of mole rats.
My Review:
I’m an old lady so I don’t often find myself reading New Adult stories, but since this is Smartypants I was all in. I am delighted to advise that this was an amusing, thoughtful, and perceptively written tale that informed of the differences between the non-hearing and hearing perspectives, and I loved that. I enjoyed the careful texturing and multi-layering of the characters as well as their snarky inner musings.
This was my introduction to the clever and insightful arrangements of words of Lola West, and I was an instant fan. I look forward to delving into more of her scribblings.
My gosh I freaking loved this book so much! Molly is absolutely amazing and my heart went out to her for all of the struggles that she has had to go through and also everything that Zack went through as well. These two could not be more different, but yet also so similar. Getting to know them both was so heartwarming and while I wanted to shake some sense into them sometimes, this was a freaking awesome read. It has everything that you would like in a new adult romance with the instant connection, some great steam, and just a darn good book.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book and loved getting to know them both! I give it 4.5 outta 5 stars and enjoyed it so much!
PS: Thank you to Smartypants Romance for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly!

My giving this book 3 stars had nothing to do with the quality of the book. It was well-written and interesting, the characters were engaging, and I really liked Molly and learning how being deaf was just a single part of herself, just like being dark haired and short, and admired how she was determined to approach the way she lived her life on her own terms and not by anyone else's.
My issue--and it was a big one--was the fact that Zack was the TA for one of her classes and having worked in academic, that's a relationship that I just can't get past. Yes, he was honourable and the relationship developed in a perfectly understandable way. But the fact that he developed feelings for her so quickly and while in that position of power (although not so much of one as if he had been her professor--something that would have had me closing the book immediately) just couldn't work for me. The fact that I still gave it 3 stars is a testament to the quality of the writing.
Lola is one of my favorite authors and was so excited when I found out she was writing the SPR universe! She writes the most amazing badass female characters with swoony male leads.
Zack is under a lot of pressure - school, president of his fraternity and his father. He is a great friend, leader but has some baggage he needs to work through.
I knew I was going to love Molly from the moment I started reading. She is feisty, determined but also holding back due to her family.
From Molly and Zack’s initial interactions through the end of the book they will make you laugh, swoon and cheer for them. They are such fun characters with preppy, frat boy Zack’s hidden nerdy side and Molly sassy, fun punk rocker pixie.
These two are the perfect match and you will not want their story to end. Hoping we get a story about Cora..she’s amazing.
Zack had a hard childhood. He has a father who's molded him to his liking. And Zack doesn't want to rock the boat to step out of line. He's made his piece with the life his father has planned for him. But that all changes the night he meets Molly.
Molly has her own insecurities. She wants to become a famous drummer, but her being deft makes the road to success not so easy. But she's determined to make it despite it. Letting Zack in her life makes her see that maybe, just maybe life can be a better if you let that special someone in to share the burden together.
I've been reading Lola's work for some time now and every single thing was a hit with me and I’m more than happy to come back for more.

This was my first read of a Lola West novel and I am enchanted. Zach is the son of a politician and he has been raised so that he will some day join his father in the life of politics. However, living in the limelight and under a microscope is not how Zach wants to spend his days. At heart he is just a nerd/Trekkie and he would love to be "normal" and be able to be his true self. One day while working as a TA for one of his professors, in walks a woman who entices him with her personality and ability to present herself as both confidant and yet so sweet. And what really drew his attention was that she was deaf but yet so self assured in her musical abilities . This was such a sweet story of opposites attract. I am in love with these characters! I must read more from this author. Review submitted by C. Seymour
