Castles and Courtship

An Engagement with the Enemy

Rate this book
James Aldwick isn’t ready to settle down, but his father, Baron Retford, doesn’t give him a choice. The stigma of illegitimacy has haunted the baron his whole life, and it’s up to his son to reestablish their good name by marrying into a family with a perfect pedigree. A series of summer parties is the obvious course of action and the perfect opportunity to parade eligible ladies before the reluctant James. Jessica Westcote, the youngest daughter of an earl, has resisted marriage to every stuffy lord her parents present to her. She wants a love match, not a business alliance.

Unfortunately, the only man to ever evoke more than a tepid response from her heart is Mr. Aldwick, and passionate fury isn’t the same thing as ardent love. When an invitation to Retford Castle’s long list of events arrives, Jessica surprises herself by accepting. James is just as surprised to see his childhood nemesis and neighbor as a frequent guest, but he is certain his former foe won’t lay down arms long enough for a truce, let alone a courtship. Battle lines are drawn, but it isn’t long before those lines begin to blur. Are they friends or foes? Enemies or allies? As the end of summer approaches and James must make his choice, can Jessica forget the past long enough to imagine a future with him?

As a newly-minted Sally Britton fan and a lowly no-Booksta reviewer, I was so happily surprised to receive an affirmative to my long-shot request for an ARC from the author. My impatience for this story’s release was being tested, and I was given blessed relief. No positive review was required; all these many thoughts are my own. My apologies in advance for the absolutely essential use of enthusiastic caps.

First of all, YOU NEED TO READ THIS HERO’S DECLARATION. Yes, we have childhood enemies turned to allies and comrades conspiring against unwanted matchmaking. Yes, we have banter, retelling of outrageous childhood adversarial antics and present-day house party scheming. Yes, we have an ancient castle, suits of armor, village fair and all, as a setting for the aforementioned, plus “kissing gate” strategy meetings. And, YES, we have, in my inexpert opinion, excellent anxiety rep and just wonderful emotional caretaking. But it’s the CHARACTER-ARC- PROGRESSION-MATCHES-THE-RELATIONSHIP PERFECTION that just has me brimming with romance reader joy. And I’ll tell you, if I start feeling hit over the head with claims of “sworn enemies” but not getting the actual on page tension, I start Eliza Doolittle-ing a “Show Me” tune. But, never fear, once a hero magnificiently steps in it with his big mouth and the “knees to the dust” are imminent, I’M ALL IN.

Made all the better by how my pacing expectations were gratifyingly subverted over and over, I submit the apt subtitle “The Education of Lord James Aldwick by Miss Jessica Westcote and all the What-Not-To-Do’s of Would-be Suitors.” It’s the Man-Child arc in all its glory as he goes from a bit of an obliviously mischivieous baron’s bookish son to an honorable, steadfast, protective champion of the girl he loved to prank. Is “Not Afraid to Call Himself an Idiot” an archetype? It should be. And James concedes so well to have met his match (arguably his superior) in character and wit, falls hard and DOES SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

I’d be remiss not to mention Jessica’s complexity as she is brilliant, sharp, outspoken, no wilting wallflower here, nevermind that she’s been a borderline recluse because of her difficulties. Strong and vulnerable, the way she chooses to hope, chooses to trust, chooses to become forever allies with the boy she loved to prank, she is beyond deserving of THE HERO’S DECLARATION YOU MUST READ. I was already an inner-blubbering mess and then a joyous epilogue “I KNEW IT” gesture? Brava, Ms. Britton; so overwhelmingly good.

Again, many thanks to the author for an ARC, and the wait will be over soon: releases September 8th!

Content notes: brief kissing only, main character suffers from social anxiety and hypersensitivity, predominant mentions of how condition was misunderstood/misdiagnosed, on page panic attacks.

Lovely and heartwarming regency romance.
4,5 stars .
I'm a big fan of Sally Britton's work. Listening to the audiobook narrated by the brilliant Jessica Elisa Boyd, made the reading experience even more special.
Jessica Elisa Boyd has such a warm and beautiful voice, she gives each character a distinct voice, all of thrm pleasing, men or women. I could listen to her all day.

As for the story itself, it took me a bit to warm up to James, but soon he started to make amends and apologized to Jessica, so I could watch them fall in love without reservation.

It was funny to see that not everyone took James too seriously, though:

"Leo squeezed his shoulders. “I know you better than anyone, and I know if you don’t admit this thing aloud that you will do your best to bury it. Speak plainly.”
“To what purpose?” James stepped back and turned away. “As you said, I’m an idiot. No one knows that fact better than Jessica.”
“Debatable. I think we’re all quite aware of your shortcomings.”'

This book has great anxiety rep, it's rare in regency romances.

Ps for those who are interested, the author has put all her audiobooks on youtube, for free.

I honestly just want to go back and read this one again right now! And then tell everyone I talk to about the book! I just absolutely adored James and Jessica! They were just such great characters! I loved seeing their perceptions of the other and how those had been shaped since childhood. Their playful schemes ratcheted up a notch every year until they were verbally sparing and truly felt like they were enemies. Yes, this was a wonderful enemies to more story!

And the banter! Oh, the banter!!! Jessica and James are so good at being quick-witted and able to go back and forth in their verbal sparing. I'm sure the other characters watching might have felt like they were at a tennis match, watching the ball go back and forth between the two. But in this case, the verbal quips are volleying back and forth. And I most definitely loved when they reached a truce and their first time in public and everyone expecting some banter to not have any! Their reactions were the best!

Can I just say James is such a wonderful gentleman?! I'm not normally one who says I have a book boyfriend, but this character, he would be one to make me say that! I loved his growth and his seeing and understanding that happened. Not just about other characters but about himself. I love a good character arc. I read because I love watching and seeing that people (characters) change and improve and have redemption. Because I want that for myself. I don't want to be the same person I was when I was 5, 15, 20, heavens no! I want to grow and make mistakes and learn from those mistakes but I sure want to try to be better each day!

And James' lines and actions. Oh heavens!!! If I were Jessica, I'd be smitten! *smirks* And those lines aren't cheesy and cringy. Nope! Full of sincerity and goodness and love! *Happy sigh*

And Jessica, she's just awesome! I love how she can school James in their banter. James, sorry but she's the winner! I loved when more of her backstory was revealed and we came to understand her better and knowing her struggles and yet her powering through and her trying to find joy in all around her. Yep! I just loved everything about her!

Combine them together, and combine their wits together as they join forces, and these two are something else to behold!

So much to love about this one! I'm not going to give any spoilers so just do yourself a big favor and pick it up!!!!! You'll thank me! I promise!!!! So many heart eyes for this book and these characters! And I'm hoping that maybe Sally Britton will make some break off stories for several of the secondary characters!!!! Fingers and toes crossed!!! ;-)

Content: Clean. A couple sweet kisses but nothing further. No language.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

“You will not fail, Jess. Not when you want something. I have years of experience of watching you achieve many things.”

All the love for this book! This is definitely a top favorite enemies to lovers romance! It has all the things I love: deliciously witty banter, sworn enemies turned allies, little sister’s best friend, harmless pranks, a heroine with an anxiety disorder expertly done, and the heartfelt romance Sally Britton is known for. I also loved the delightful Regency setting along with an old castle complete with knights’ armor, and the nearby village fair.

Future baron James Aldwick is content to read his books and enjoy his state of life. His father however thinks it’s time for him to marry. As his mother and father devise a series of summer parties and balls to try to find him a wife, James tries to devise a way to thwart their plans.

Jessica Westcote is also being pressured to marry. Wanting to see her cared for, her father encourages her to find a worthy suitor before the end of the summer. When she receives an invitation to spend time with her best friend Catherine at her family’s castle, she readily accepts especially when she’s currently enduring a rather lonely existence. Though not looking forward to spending time with Catherine’s brother and her sworn enemy, she quickly realizes they’re in the same predicament. As she and James team up to thwart their parents’ plans, their relationship changes from one of pranks and witty barbs to allies to something more.

I loved Jessica and James! The witty banter and good natured teasing were so good. I absolutely adored watching James transform from a bookish, somewhat spoiled baron to a kind, strong, supportive man. He strengthens Jessica and helps her manage her fears. He recognizes the intelligent, capable woman she is despite her burdensome challenges. I also loved the way he approached their relationship and wasn’t afraid to go after what he wanted.

Jessica is such a relatable, sympathetic heroine. She’s very quick witted and creative. I love the way she goes from not wanting to marry to experiencing first love with her sworn enemy turned friend. The anxiety she suffers was represented so well! I loved seeing the contrast in the way James sees her versus Catherine. He sees the woman and not the anxiety.

I loved the kissing gate scenes, secret meetings at night, the delightful relationship progression, and the village fair. So many heartfelt moments that made me want to cheer! Highly recommend this romantic, well written, witty Regency that sets the bar high for all future enemies to lovers stories. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own & voluntarily given.

“He smirked. “Perhaps I am merely immune to your charms. Whatever they may be.”

“That you think I have any is a marked improvement to your view of me. Should I be grateful?”

“Gratitude is a virtue, I’m told.”

This is such a sweet, lighthearted regency romance with childhood enemies to lovers plus best friend’s brother. This book combines two of my favorite tropes to perfection!

Jessica Westcote and James Aldwick have been enemies for years!

I loved the history and memories between them, and the past pranks and their true thoughts of one another! The childhood flashbacks were my favorite! I loved getting to know them and their story. Their journey from loathe to love was such a joy to read.

Sally Britton has done it again! A beautiful story of two people who grew up together (are self-proclaimed enemies in endless prank wars and verbal battles) and find they are a match for each other-if they’d only put their “weapons” away.

James Aldwick is the future Baron Retford, and with a shaky family history, his parents are determined to see him settled with someone of the peerage. Instead of spending the summer in the castle library and quietly enjoying the country air after another London Season, high ranked families have been invited and events scheduled to help secure a desired match…

Jessica Westcote is witty as she is tall, and can verbally spar with anyone and everyone, but most especially James, her sworn enemy. Which is unfortunate since his sister is her very closest friend. She’s never had a season and looks forward to summers with the Aldwicks, but as events unfold her insecurities rear their ugly head.

The banter and familiarity in this story are top notch. So funny and sharp. It’s less formal being they’ve known each other since childhood, which adds a level of depth often contrived in other stories. Definitely one of my favorite reads of the year.

I was totally surprised by this. The first book of the series I read was An Amiable Foe by Jennie Goutet, which is part of a series of novels that can each be read as a stand-a-alone, or in any order called Castles and Courtships, and it also includes An Engagement with the Enemy, plus 6 others. They are sweet, clean Regency Romances and of the two I’ve read one was better than the other. An Engagement with the Enemy was better than An Amiable Foe IMO in that it wasn’t too repetitive, and the conversations between hero and heroine was somewhat witty; I found their antagonistic relationship rather funny, and it was a fun read. I admit that this lighthearted novel was a nice break from dreary novels of strong emotional rawness and stressful situations. I do recommend it highly if you are looking for an escape read that is completely charming, and entertaining. It’d be perfect on a beach or cozy up with a warm blanket and a cup of tea on a cold night, or after a stressful day. I liked it so much I thought it deserved 4⭐⭐⭐⭐

As always, I’m left in awe at how lovely and delightful Sally’s writing is! I will always read anything she writes. I adored this story and it’s sweet characters! It was witty, charming and full of romance!

James and Jessica have been enemies since they can remember. Growing up together, they were always playing pranks on each other, always trying to get the upper hand. James’ parents are ready for him to marry a lady from a wealthy, upstanding family to help the family name. They decide to host a series of summer parties to parade several women for James to choose from. Meanwhile, Jessica is also matched with eligible gentlemen to secure for a husband, which she has no desire for.

So the two decide to set aside their differences and come to a truce to help each other out. But what happens when they realize their relationship as enemies could possibly turn into so much more?

James and Jessica were a match of wits! Their banter was some of the best I’ve read! I couldn’t get enough of their banter, yall!! It was that good! James was relentless with his teasing and flirting! And Jessica loved it deep down, even though she tried to hide it. She was mischievous, witty and spunky! I loved all their moments together, especially those at the kissing gate! This story was filled with all the swoony, romantic scenes I love in Sally’s books!

I can’t forget to mention how much I loved Leo! He stole the show when he was on the page! He was the hilarious best friend that adds so much to the story! I loved his scenes with James! And sweet Catherine, James’s sister and Jessica’s best friend, was another fav side character. She was a genuine soul who was caring and loving.

If you are a lover of regency romance full of heart, laughter, and characters you will fall in love with, then read this charming romance! You will never go wrong with a story by @authorsallybritton !

This was just darling!♡ It's been a minute since I last read a regency romance, so this was the perfect introduction back into the genre. Enemies to lovers is such a fun genre to me because it typically involves some fun banter, and I love watching the animosity dissolve into friendship... and then more. Both of which you can expect to find with James and Jessica in this sweet story. :)

Sally Britton is one of my auto buy authors and I love everything she has written but this one may have snagged the top spot over any other ones...and I have read them all!

This book is just amazing from start to finish! I love that it is the enemies to lovers trope that is filled with wit, banter, pranks, and just a true enemy situation. James and Jessica are just perfection when battling each other.

I love that James falls first and that he is just so sweet with Jessica. From the time he realizes what he is really feeling to the end he is just non stop swoon worthy. He is truly Jessica's rock and safe place which coming from an enemy background just shows how amazing he really is.

Jessica may be one of my all time favorite characters because she is real and she is me. I have never felt so seen and connected with a character before. Her thoughts, emotions, doubt and insecurities are mine. Yet James sees her for who she is and accepts who she is. Every single part of her. Just as my husband is my rock and loves every part of me.

If you want a book where you have all the banter, wit and fun but also heart stopping sweet moments (and I'm not even talking about the sweet kisses) then truly read this one. It is definitely one of my top favorites of the year and that's out of almost 250 books this year alone.

Sally nailed this book through and through. I don't think I would change one thing.

Thank you to Sally Britton for my complimentary eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

When Sally and James, enemies since childhood, decide to team up to thwart their corresponding family's marriage plans, you already know what is going to happen. The banter between these two lifelong friends had me chuckling throughout the book.
The aha moment for each character made my heart so happy. When that inevitable point in every romance was about to rear its ugly head, I had to message a fellow arc reader. Needless to say she was enjoying all my angst but never gave anything away.

Sally's "affliction", better known as panic attacks/anxiety/fear of crowds, was shown in a real yet positive light (if that makes sense). Her family and friends rallied around her rather than shun her. I was a bit upset with her best friend during one scene, but once I saw her reasoning, it all made sense.

This was a quick heart warming read and I enjoyed every minute of it.

An Engagement with the Enemy was my first Sally Britton novel, but it will not be my last. I seem to be in my clean, regency romance era and I am loving every minute. I am blaming that rascal James for my change of heart. His speech was over the top romantic and I wish I could trade places with Sally for that moment in time.

I have loved so many of Sally Britton's books and series. I was excited to see that she had a book that was part of the Castles and Courtship series. These are standalone books that can be read in any order.

This story of James and Jessica may just have become my favorite! The banter between them is top notch. I will admit to having my mouth drop open in shock at one point. But oh James... The way he shows his affection for Jessica just melted my heart. I can't recommend this one enough. I will definitely re read this one!

I was gifted a complimentary advanced digital copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This childhood enemies to lovers story was so charming! I simply adored Jessica and her best friend’s brother, James. Their back and forth banter was witty and fun. These two really disliked each other and I loved reading about all the pranks they’ve played on each other growing up. Let’s just say they were very creative!

𝐹𝑜𝑟 𝑠𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑛 𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑒𝑠, 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑘𝑛𝑒𝑤 𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑦 𝑡𝑜𝑜 𝑤𝑒𝑙𝑙.

Now as adults and needing each other’s help, they decide to put their fighting aside and try being friends. Except that their feelings for each other quickly go beyond friendship! The meetings at the “kissing gate” were my favorite scenes!

As always, I appreciate that Sally keeps the romance sweet and clean!

Thanks to the author for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

A Regency. Sorry but the author repeated her theme
too often. This also had enemy to lovers MCs. Gave
this 3 stars.

James (son of a baron) & Jessica (niece of an earl)
played pranks as kids, & employed sarcasm in the
here & now. She and Catherine, his sis, were besties.
The sire of James, eager to see him wed, invited a
family with an eligible daughter to visit, then after
they left, the next family and so on. Sire had a
schedule. Some guests left early when they decided
the offspring did not make a match.

The MCs worked together to foil suitors for each
other. My fav. scene? A possible suitor for Jessica
assumed he was the better horseman, until he
saw Jess & her horse neatly/ cleanly jump a hedge.

Jess had anxiety around crowds, noise, smells, etc.
Physicians convinced her & her parents she had
hysterics or was mad and belonged in an asylum.
So she kept this a secret, but she allowed Catherine
& her mom to know. Her da kept Jess away from
overcrowded cities ie London. The author sensitively
revealed this, but overplayed it at times. Jess had
many aspects of her personality, besides anxiety.
Once James knew, he showed her they could be on
the edge of a crowd or go to a quieter place to take a
breather. She felt safe w/ him. I liked the 'kissing
gate' connecting their properties.

This is one of Sally’s sweetest books! James and Jessica have always been rivals. Having grown up next door and with Jessica being best friends with James’ sister they know each other well, but maybe not as well as they thought. Though it’s technically an enemies to lovers romance, it felt more like friends to more.

This is a very low angst, sweet love story. When they are both expected to entertain others with thoughts of marriage they both balk. Jessica doesn’t want to get married because of her anxieties and thinks she would be better alone. James is just not ready and doesn’t see the need for rushing into anything. So they become allies, helping to discourage the other’s suitors. Not in a fake relationship way, but by dropping hints at why they each might not be the best marriage partner.

When James finally becomes aware of Jessica’s anxiety problems he becomes so protective and caring. The perfect swoony boyfriend. Their problems are not over however. You’ll have to read this to see how they each got their happily ever after.

I would call this a rivals to lovers more than enemies to lovers story but it still had some great tension. I loved both Jessica and James as characters. Watching them find the feelings that were clearly there was a great read and I loved James’ care for Jessica as she battled her anxieties. There isn’t a ton of drama and I liked that about the story. I wanted a little more from the epilogue but otherwise, this was another great book by Sally.

James and Jessica have been enemies since childhood. Jessica is James’s sister’s best friend. James’s parents have decided it’s time for James to get married so they start giving parties and inviting eligible women to attend. Jessica’s father sees this and thinks Jessica should marry too. James doesn’t want to marry. Jessica is afraid to marry due to her health condition. James and Jessica call a truce so to speak and agree to sabotage potential suitors for each other. Although by working together they may become friends and maybe even more.

This story was amazing! I love Enemies to Lovers so this was a perfect fit for me! I love James character, and after he finds out about Jessica’s issue he is the sweetest guy! Swoon! And I just love how strong and brave Jessica is! The two of them together is so fun! I loved the banter between them and then the romance later on! Definitely recommend!

Britton had done it again! She has written a wonderful regency novel that swept me away into a completely different world. I became lost in the characters’ lives and immersed in their world. Jessica was a strong and intelligent woman who knew what she wanted. The banter between Jessica and James was so witty and kept me smiling and page turning. Their relationship was a match of wits! The plan that James came up with for them both to avoid marriage was hilarious and I loved watching it play out.

The emotional and touching moments were just as memorable as the laugh out loud moments were. Britton really packs an emotional and tender punch to the story. Full of witty banter and tender and emotional moments, An Engagement With the Enemy is a must read for regency fans! Such a beautiful, well crafted, and wonderfully moving enemies to lovers from Sally Britton. I enjoy all of her works that I’ve read and this one is no different. Jessica struggles with what seems like social anxiety (diagnosed in this setting as hysteria) and James’ desire to understand and support her through it is super sweet. Their enemies to allies to friends to lovers is absolutely beautiful (when James called her “my dear little ally” 🥺🥺) and I loved every page of this book! An Engagement with the Enemy shares the story of Jessica and James. Jessica is the best friend of James' sister, Catherine. Jessica and James are constantly at odds with each other. As both Jessica and James are being encouraged to find a spouse by their parents, they discover that they have more in common than they realized.

Sally Britton demonstrates her skills as an author from the witty dialogue to more combative dialogue between the characters including subtle barbs to outright arguments. Readers will enjoy seeing the characters change from enemies to lovers in this book. The author does a good job at shifting their relationship as the story progresses. Along with the story, Sally delves into sharing how Jessica deals with anxiety. Jessica learns to deal with it as she opens up and shares with James. I love that the characters deal with multiple issues from scheming parents, to getting past childhood antics, dealing with their own issues, and more. The characters are layered with complexities. This is a character-driven novel that readers will find to be quite a page turner. This is a sweet, clean romance that would be appropriate for teens to adults. There is A Midsummer Night Dream reference in a scene that didn't seem to fit with the story since it wasn't a retelling, and I wasn't sure how or why it was there. Otherwise, I enjoyed the story and the relationship dynamic between the characters. This was a fun read, and I think Regency Romance readers will find it an enjoyable one to add to their collection.

Please note that I received a free copy of this book to review, however, this is my honest opinion.

If you want a sweet, closed door, regency romance- look no further. I enjoyed this story for many reasons, the banter first and foremost, as well as the happily ever after vibe.

Jessica is a feisty, witty, and very smart young woman in a time that women were expected to defer to the men. Her best friends brother is the main target of her pranks and her strongly expressed opinions. James is a bit prideful, and is not about to let his little sisters friend get the best of him. It is game ON. I enjoyed the reminiscing of previous pranks and escapades throughout the story.

I love the fact that the confident Jessica is also plagued with what seems to be social anxiety disorder now, but was referred to at the time as hysterics and weakness of character, and other negative labels. Friends and family offer help and support while she tries to learns to navigate society and it’s expectations.

When the 2 call a truce to assist each other in repelling potential suitors invited by their fathers, it feels like another chance to make the other look bad. However, their banter warms into something sweet and caring. Even with others trying to discourage their interest in each other, they are falling hard.

This has all the tropes, all the sweetness, and all the warmth that you expect when reading a Sally Britton story.

“When he stays up all night to read?” Catherine giggled. “You can always tell. He is quite grumpy on those mornings. Late to breakfast. Short tempered. Until you ask about his book, and then he can speak of how much he enjoyed it, recounting why he read for hours at a time.”

“For sworn enemies, they knew each other entirely too well.”

James Aldwick is the next Baron Retford, but before he takes his title he must appease his parents and attempt to find a wife. This means his summer is now filled with visits from eligible matches all vying for his attention…but his attention seems fixed on the one person who understands and frustrates him the most.

Jessica Westcote has a secret, her whole life she has battled waves of anxiety that has kept her from fully entering society and kept her close to home. Few people know her secret, and the one person she can’t seem to stand to be around…is the one person she wants to spend time with.

The newest novel from @authorsallybritton is as charming as it is addicting. The witty banter, humorous simplicity, and emotional vulnerability that is intertwined in this story kept me hooked until the very end.

There is something so unmistakably beautiful about a partnership between two people who accept each other fully for their flawed, wonderful, human selves. I absolutely adored this book and was honored to be one of the advanced readers.

“Ah. Miss Westcote. I sensed a chill in the air.”

“Mr. Aldwick, you are as charming as ever.”

This new installment in the Castles and Courtship Series by Sally Britton is a true enemies to lovers story and I was immediately invested. I really liked both characters from the beginning and that’s not always the case.

I received a complimentary copy but these are my own thoughts.

Jessica is being pushed to marry and her best friend’s brother, James, is forced to choose a wife from the buffet his dad provides through the summer. Neither want that kind of marriage. A plan is hatched. Also, Jessica has her own kind of social anxiety to overcome and it’s done in such a sweet way.

Love and hate is such a fine line, but when that line blurs all kinds of fun explodes. There is so much history between these characters and the author unwinds every piece in the perfect way to keep us engaged. Sometimes backstories can bog a story down, but these stories fill us with hope.

I loved the kissing gate. It gave me Anne vibes and that’s always a good thing. Witty banter and meaningful glances make this the perfect regency story.

Sometimes we need a little push to cross the line of love and hate. See if James can give it a little nudge and find love at the kissing gate.

A sweet regency (or early victorian) love story about Jessica and James, friends who grow up as enemies but decide to put aside their sparing and instead join forces to help each other avoid marriages to other candidates.

What I liked:
- I appreciate the unique/fun scenes that Sally brings into her books, and this book included those type of scenes. There was a village fair, a kissing gate, and a few silly objects around the castle that I haven't read in any similar books before.
- I loved how the author portrayed Jessica with an anxiety disorder and brought it to light. The other characters learned how to love her well.
- The story wrapped up all loose ends and tied them together in an endearing way.

What I didn't like:
- I wish the date was written on page one of the book. I like seeing the year explicitly when I read historical fiction, so I can imagine the culture/fashion accurately.
- Plot was a little light/slow with less tension than I personally prefer.

Content: Squeaky clean, only a couple chaste kisses. Main character has panic disorder / fear of crowds.

I received a complementary ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. My review has not be influenced by the author or publisher.

I love when these cheesy historical romance books have a little more substance than just your typical Jane Austin romance plot. Jessica deals with anxiety, which was something not understood at the time. The doctors called it “fits, weakness of character” and said it may be an indication of potential insanity. Her anxiety was something viewed as shameful and her family kept it well-hidden to protect her. I could relate to the main character so much. The author described anxiety so perfectly. Jessica wore bracelets she could fidget with, had clothes made of light fabrics so they wouldn’t feel so suffocating in anxiety inducing situations. The author also was spot on with the fears people with anxiety face: being a burden, being seen only as something broken, being left behind, and eventually causing those you love to resent you.

I loved that Jessica’s family and closest friends supported her, and how she gradually allowed herself to be vulnerable around the love interest. His over-the-top concern was a bit annoying, I will admit. I would go nuts if someone was always asking me if I was ok. I don’t want to be babied. But, Jessica seemed to like it, so that’s just me.

The love story itself was pretty fun. The characters were smart and witty. The transition from “enemies” to being in love was slow, thus believable. I have put more books on hold from this author. It’s a nice refresh after several books of disappointing drivel.

I do plan to start reading fiction of more substance. Any day now. For real…
