Who was Duncan Hennessey? A big and burly mountain man, a half-breed some said, he seemed not unlike the bears he'd saved Betsy Hunter from -- wild, powerful, a force of nature. But as she tended the wounds this loner had suffered because of her, Betsy could see that he was gentle, too, with an artist's soul. And though he'd professed to like the lonely existence he'd carved for himself in the wilds of Montana, Betsy knew otherwise. There was no doubt that in Duncan Hennessey, she'd found her true mate for life.
But could she pierce the dark cloud of his past -- and show him a brighter future in her arms?
Jillian Hart grew up on her family's homestead in Washington state, where she raised cattle, rode horses and scribbled stories in her spare time. After earning her English degree from Whitman College, she worked in travel and advertising before selling her first novel. When Jillian isn't working on her next story, she can be found puttering around her rose garden, curled up with a good book and spending quiet evenings at home with her family.
I really enjoyed this light harlequin historical and won't scoff at the line next time someone gives me a book by them. I was extremely impressed by the pain she put her hero through and his transformation as a character. I thoroughly enjoyed this historical romance and will probaly seek out more work by this author.
it has potential, which is what makes me even more angry that this was not good. this is the second book by this author that makes me feel like this: like I was promised a good story, but the execution is terrible.
main issues for me was the lack of logic behind some of the plot points. for example, the heroine is supposedly from a "good family," and from what it looks like in the book, they have a comfortable life, so why is she working as a laundress??? her family is so worried about her reputation, but they let her not only work but work as a laundress who makes deliveries all by herself??? it makes no sense.
then when the MMC gets mauled by not one but two bears, she drags him back to his cabin and tries to save him. she even says it herself that she's been traveling those roads for a long time and she'd never encountered wild life before but suddenly 2 bears plus a wolf show up out of nowhere??? wild animals don't go after humans like that, they don't *eat* us. the first bear attack was believable because this dumbass was literally eating her tasty lunch in the middle of the woods, but the other animal attacks are just random and were probably thrown in there to add *drama*.
then when the brother of the heroine comes along to save her, he literally grabs this man who is severely mauled by the way, and shakes him like he’s defending his sister's honor... sir, can't you see that man is almost dead???? and your sister was literally patching him up?????? I hate when characters do dumb things like that. feels like puppets and not real characters. then, the doctor comes along, and he even says it himself "oh this dude is not waking up, yikes." but the heroine chooses to stay and see him through the night so he doesn't die alone. and then her family comes again the next day, and they're all worried about her "reputation." first of all: she's a widow, not a fresh faced debutante, I could understand all this worry if she was not a widow. then there was the fact that the doctor is a witness to the fact that the dude could not have compromised her in any way, he was at death's door!!! anyway, it's just so stupid... all the decisions are stupid, the characters are stupid and unlikeable, they feel like puppets on a string, they don't feel like fleshed out people. ugh!!! I'm mad because I really wanted to like this book.
how I loved this story, I really felt for Duncan and I really loved the sunny and strongwilled Betsy. My God how he suffered; injustice and wrongness for a crime he didn't commit, witnessing his friends turning into bloodthirsty vigilante mob,10 years prison and torture then the loss of his beloved mother and family. I couldn't stop reading this story and I just loved the way Betsy loved this mountain man, and how she believed in him and stood for him. I just wished, the author had developped the meeting of Duncan and her family, Granny and Duncan's formal introduction. I would have loved to read how she publically defended him. beautiful and heart gripping story.
3.5 stars I liked the premise of the story and the two main characters, how ever there were continuity issues at the en of the book that should have caught by the editor. that's why I could only give this 3.5 stars.
I really enjoyed reading this story. The characters were very well written. I especially liked the ending. I wish the story could’ve been a little bit longer though.
Duncan enterneció mi corazón, me dio tanta pena. Así que fue muy lindo ver que Betsy lo trataba con respeto y más lo agradecida que estaba, fue un gran factor para que se enamoraran.
I love mountain man stories... and this one fit the bill. The hero was super tortured and grumpy, the heroine was such a pleasant, positive, understanding person. I found the story line to be very interesting and it kept me interested all the way to the end. I would have liked to see another chapter or two after the family dinner at the end. ** Spoilers ** What kept me from giving it a 5-star rating was the constant repetition of how dark, shadowy, ice cold the cabin was, how the hero would mentally step back into shadows, etc. So many references about that, that went on and on. And of course the endless ramblings of him not being good enough for the heroine. Another weird thing that caught my attention was after the bear attack, she somehow got him by herself down a road and into his cabin (by herself on foot), then there are wild animals roaming around the cabin trying to get in and then her family suddenly bursts thru and breaks down the front door... no mention ever of the door being repaired. The family breaks down the door, after a bit they leave to go home, so... no front door with freezing temps and animals trying to get in? Then the whole avalanche and house damage.... before this happened the story went on and on how bitter cold they were indoors and then the avalanche destroys a wall and snow comes bursting into the cabin... So they decided thats a great time to lay down in the snow on the bedroom floor and get kissy and go to sleep? How?? They couldn't stop their teeth from chattering before the storm with all four walls intact. So some of the detail seemed like they were over looked... but I loved the very likeable characters.
Despite the rage inducing plot, as always, Jillian Hart’s florid and detailed descriptions bring colour and texture to this world and the food within it.
Total: 3 slices of tart and flaky strawberry pie out of 5
I've downloaded most of her books now. Can't stop reading her stories! She writes so well of the agony of loss; yet how the human spirit can overcome such pain. Well done. Bel
I really loved this book. My heart broke for in injustice that was done to this man. To get that kind of hateful treatment is just wrong. I am so happy he got his HEA
