Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.

James Dean is the original creator and illustrator of Pete the Cat. He is a self-taught artist originally from Fort Payne, Alabama. His passion for drawing became apparent at a young age, and as a child, you could find James drawing his favorite characters like Snoopy and Yogi Bear.

James earned his degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University and went on to work for Georgia Power for a number of years. Eventually, he was called to pursue his art full- time and began selling his work at art festivals around the Southeast. It was during this time that he began creating paintings and drawing of his cat, Pete. The little blue cat showed up as a character in James’s artwork around 1999 and has been a permanent fixture ever since.

James Dean’s art has been sold in more than ninety galleries and shops across the United States. He has devoted his paintings to Pete the Cat for fifteen years and turned his natural love for cats into his life’s work. James published his first book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat, a history of his artwork, in 2006, and he illustrated his first self-published children’s book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, in 2008. There are now almost 100 published Pete the Cat titles with more coming out all the time. James is humbled every day by the success that this groovy blue cat has brought him. He says positively affecting children’s lives is his number one priority, and he is grateful to have such an amazing audience to work for.

Another easy fun read

Easy for a new reader to read, and many words for them to sound out as well. It was also a cute story.

After a fun day at the beach, Pete the Cat suggests that his friends come over to his house for a sleepover, in order to continue the good times. What he doesn't expect is that his restless companions will keep him up, when he's just trying to get some zzzzs. Fortunately, Pete thinks to break out a book, and an impromptu story-time sends everyone off to the land of nod, there to dream of another day of fun in the sun...

The seventh full-size picture-book devoted to the adventures of that ever-cool cat, Pete the Cat and the Bedtime Blues is only the second title I have read from this series that wasn't written by the original author/songwriter, Eric Litwin. Like Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses (the first non-Litwin title I read), I thought the narrative here was a little lacking. There's none of the sing-song quality of the earlier books, despite the repetitive structure of the tale, and even the positive message about keeping cool in the face of difficulties, which did find its way into the sunglasses book, is largely absent here. I'll probably be reading more of these later Pete the Cat books for a project I'm doing at work, but overall, I have to say that this one was a bit of a disappointment.

I've found this series to be very mediocre now that James and Kimberley are doing the books together. What made the first three books so great was that they came with a song that kids would catch and sing over and over and over again. They were repeatable stories, easy to memorize and kids love that!

I haven't been impressed with a Pete picture book since Groovy Buttons. I still enjoy the Easy Readers, however.

Oh well, nothing lasts forever.

In the last two days, I have read nine (yep 9) Pete the Cat books. These books are perfect for grands and great-grands to read to young children. The underlying value system seems to of some cool cats, 1960s-70s style. The color scheme fits in with the cool cat theme--mostly cool colors with warm undertones. The warm undertones are attractive.

This books shows cool dudes surfing on a warm weather day. They do not want the party to end. So Pete invites everyone over for a slumber party. But there is little slumbering. They entertain each other in the ways familiar to those of us who were children and very young adults in the 1960s and 70s.

Another fun Pete the Cat book. Pete hosts a sleep- over with his friends and Pete really wants to go to sleep, but his friends have trouble settling down. Cute book which pleased the grandkids.

After a long day at the beach, Pete invites his friends to his place for a sleep over. This cool cat needs his rest, but his friends just don't seem sleepy. It takes Pete reading a bedtime story about his adventures to his friends before they are all ready to call it a night and go to sleep.

Loved it!
*Whispers Quietly* and as an adult, I am going to remember to have this be the last book of the night we read before bedtime. ;)

Pete the Cat and his friends spend time enjoying surfing and having fun. So they decide to have a sleep over. When it is time to go to bed, Pete the Cat’s friends keep waking up and doing something noisy. Pete the Cat takes out a story book and reads it to his friends. One by one they fall asleep and Pete the Cat could fall asleep in the end.
Most of all, illustrations caught my eye when reviewing this book. The illustrations are drawn as if children drew them. Rough coloring and diverse colors create the mood of children’s drawings in art class. Mostly yellow and blue colors of backgrounds provide clues of night and day as well as quiet and excitement. Pertaining to the solutions to let his friends fall asleep, I thought about two effects. First, the solution implies that reading bedtime stories is a common way to make your child falls asleep. Bedtime reading is well-known strategy to create relaxed circumstances to go to bed. At the same time, this reading practice encourages children’s literacy development. Secondly, reading a book in a bed could deliver the message that reading books are not fun but are for sleep. I may exaggerate the potential risks of misinterpretations on reading books, but I believe that some children may think the way I thought when I was a child. Haha…

Synopsis: "Join Pete the Cat in a story about bedtime in Pete the Cat and the Bedtime Blues by New York Times bestselling authors James and Kimberly Dean! Pete the Cat and his friends are having so much fun playing and surfing in the sun, they don't want the day to end. Pete has an idea—how about a sleepover? Groovy! As the night gets later, it's time for bed. This cool cat needs to catch some ZZZs, but Pete's friends aren't ready to go to sleep just yet. Then Pete has another idea. . . . Will it work?"

My Review: We are big Pete the Cat fans and of course had to get this one. For some reason I really had a hard time finding Pete's jazzy personality in this one and couldn't get into the rhythm of the story like usual. With that said this is a fun book, especially as kids get a little older and start having sleepovers. What is the best way to settle down to a good night's sleep? Pete seems to have the answer.

Fiction
Pete, Alligator, Toad and Gus had a ton of fun in the sun! Pete suggested a sleepover to continue the fun times. It seemed that Pete's friends couldn't fall asleep so Pete read his friends a story. The whole gang went right to sleep as they dreamed about more fun tomorrow.
When reading this book I imagined myself sitting in front of students telling the story of Pete and his friends during story time. I feel that this story was a good example of friendship and problem solving. Pete and his friends have fun together because everyone treats each other nicely. Even with such good friends, they can be troublesome.
I could use this story of Pete and his friends in a classroom by reading it to the whole class and presenting the message of friendship and problem solving. I could also use it to read to a specific group of students who do not seem to be getting along. This book would be appropriate for kindergarten to second grade.

I thought that the illustrations were fun and that they were full of bright colors. I think that the story is a good one for younger kids that are in kindergarten or maybe first grade. I don't know if I would read it to a classroom full of 3rd or 4th graders because it may lack the depth that they require in a book. I enjoyed the rhyming. I also really liked how the letters got bigger and the color of the letters changes to create more of an emphasis on the phrases that needed it. I would recommend this book to parents and teachers because this story is full of vibrant illustrations and a neat story. Overall I thought the story was fun and that it would be a good story to read with younger kids who are just learning to read.

When Pete the cat and his other groovy friends spend a long fun day at the beach, they don't want the fun to stop, so Pete comes up with a super cool plan to have a sleepover with his closest pals, Alligator, Frog, and Gus. But as they all try to fall asleep after their long day, Pete the Cat keeps being awaken by one of his friends. Toad starts clapping, and then Gus starts to play the drums, and then Alligator starts to chomp on some pizza. Pete just wants to sleep, so he has the brilliant idea to read to his friends, and before you know it they are all asleep dreaming of a new day with more fun in the sun!

This is a pretty quick read for your class and a great way to introduce those different kinds of vocabulary such as groovy, and Jam and all those sorts of words.

Pete the cat and his friends have the best day hanging out, and they don’t want it to end, so they decide to have a sleepover. The only problem is that none of Pete’s friends want to go to sleep. They make all kinds of noises until Pete finally decides that something has to change, so he reads them a bedtime story. Suddenly, it is quiet, and all of his friends have fallen asleep.

“Pete the Cat and the Bedtime Blues” is a fun story about friendship and roommates. It doesn’t have much of a deeper meaning, but it is very relatable. The artwork includes so many vibrant colors that it is fun to look at. I think this would be a cute book to read to students if you have a nap time during the school day to encourage a quiet time.

Adorable, Fun Book

Pete the cat wants to get some sleep, but his friends are sleeping over after a fun day together and they keep making noise. Poor Pete has the bed time blues, and it gives him an idea... No, not making music instead of sleeping, though I'll admit I thought it may happen. He decides to help his friends get to sleep with a bedtime story - a cute nod toward this book's use as a bedtime story itself.

I like this book. It's cute, groovy, retro-styled, and fun. I would recommend it for children who love animals and who need bedtime stories to help them unwind at night.

I think this children's book is one of the best! The series of Pete the Cat is always a good one for the children. In this book of the series, I find it interesting for the children. It will keep them wondering what Pete is going to do next to get some sleep. Also, the pictures in the book stand out and do a good job of explaining the words of the book so that the children can understand what is happening. The story also shows the children how to problem solve. This is by Pete strategizing a plan to get his pals to finally go to sleep.

The book starts at the beach, Pete the Cat is hanging out with his friends and does not want the day to end because they want to keep hanging out. Pete has an idea to have a sleepover at his house but he regrets it, his friends are really loud and keep waking up Pete while he's trying to sleep. Pete has an idea he decides to read his friend a book hoping his friends will fall asleep so that he could go to bed already. while Pete is reading his friends fall asleep and the room is finally quiet enough to fall asleep himself.

Pete and his friends spend the day full of fun, fun and surfing at the beach. They don't want the fun to end so the Pete and friends head to Pete's for a sleepover. When the lights go out Pete's friends don't want to sleep. Toad wants to clap, Gus wants to jam and alligator wants to munch. Pete just wants to sleep so he tells his friends his favorite bedtime story in hopes of getting some shut-eye.

Pete, the cat, and his friends spend the whole day hanging out at the beach. When they were done surfing Pete suggested a sleepover. Though he could not get any sleep. All of his friends wanted to eat, play drums or clap. This gave him the Bedtime Blues. So he decided to read them a story. the group eventually settled down and fell right asleep.
A cute children's book about how important bedtime is and the benefits it brings for the next day coming.

Pete the Cat and his groovy companions make kids happy (though with the childlike illustrations and the difficult-but-there rhythm it may be hard for parents to understand why). This particular adventure will make parents happy because the hero wants to go to sleep at bedtime, and the toads and alligators and whatnot who don't want to go to sleep at bedtime are regarded as ungroovy.
Learn to groove well, kids. Go to sleep at bedtime like Pete the Cat.

I really enjoy the Pete the Cat series. I think this is one of the best series for children. In this one, I think its a silly and exciting read for the kids. It keeps them wondering what Pete is going to go through next and what he’s going to do to get to sleep. I enjoy the illustrations also, they show the kids what’s happening in the plot and are also children friendly. The book also helps children to learn how to solve a problem.

Pete the cat and all his stories have been around for generations telling children fun stories. I would recommend this story to anyone with a child struggling to go to sleep at night. Pete had a sleepover with all his animal friends, and Pete really wanted to go to sleep. All his friends had other ideas, not wanting to go to sleep, but instead play. Pete decided to tell his friends a bedtime story, and they all went to sleep soundly, realizing they could have the same fun the next day!

In this story of Pete the Cat, him and his friends are having so much fun surfing in the sun that they never want the day to end so they decide to have a sleepover. Pete is finally ready for bed, his friends on the other hand are not ready quite yet. Pete has to find a way to convince his friends to call it a night. I love all of the Pete the Cat books but this is one of my favorites.

When sleep overs just need a bedtime story to sleep and relax. Pete had fun at the beach with his friends. He decided to take the fun back home with a sleepover. When it was time to sleep each if his friends wanted to keep the party alive. Pete is smart and read his favorite book to his friends. They slept in harmony.

Love Pete The Cat

We have been reading Pete the Car since my son was in Pre-k (he's now 10) we still love reading Pete the cat! He's a cool cat that teaches good behavior, my kids like repeating some of the things Pete says and the author makes you feel included while reading. Our favorite is the one about Pete's Shoes!
