René Goscinny (1926 - 1977) was a French author, editor and humorist, who is best known for the comic book Asterix , which he created with illustrator Albert Uderzo, and for his work on the comic series Lucky Luke with Morris (considered the series' golden age).

The first two stories (Asterix and the Cauldron, Asterix in Spain) are run-of-the-mill for the series, but the third (Asterix and the Roman Agent) shows a little more social depth along with the puns, outlandish situations, and running gags.

Den femte inbundna volymen av tretton som för första gången ger ut allt Asterix-material (eller åtminstone det mesta) på svenska i kronologisk ordning, där den tidigare utgivningen av albumen gjort att den skickliga uppbyggnaden av Asterix-universumet med alla dess bifigurer minst sagt gått förlorad.

Denna femte volym samlar albumen Asterix och skatten, där Asterix blir förvisad ifrån byn för att ha blivit av med en gryta med sestertier som hövdingen för en annan by anförtrott våra galler för att slippa betala dem i skatt till romarna, Asterix i Spanien, där Asterix och Obelix får göra en resa till Hispania för att föra tillbaka den lille kidnappade gisslan Pepe (son till hövdingen Alonzo Enfanto de la Patria), och Asterix och tvedräkten, där romaren Semper Batallius sår tvedräkt mellan gallerna i vår lilla by. Dessutom innehåller volymen, förutom de förord som i dessa samlingsvolymer på ett ypperligt sätt kontextualiserar seriens utveckling och historia, den charmiga korthistorien "Maskoten" och det korta experimentet "En som vill er väl", där Goscinny och Uderzo humoristiskt svarar på läsarkommentarer genom att visa potentiella tolkningar av Asterix genom andra serieskapare och konstnärers "filter".

Jag är givetvis den förste att erkänna att jag varit ett fan av serien sedan barndomen, men vill poängtera att jag aldrig trott att jag missat så mycket som läsningen i kronologisk ordning tillför. Den här inbundna samlingsserien är ett MÅSTE för alla Asterix-fans. Och om du inte redan är ett... bli det!

I'm re-reading this one again almost by accident--I wasn't aware that it had remained on my 'currently reading' list. And I'm glad for the double-back: This is new confirmation of the brilliance of these two creative Frenchmen, especially of Albert Uderzo's marvelous cornucopic background detail. As the inevitable wild action of an Asterix/Obelix adventure unfolds, the perceptive reader will see just how much attention Uderzo lavished on the fixtures and landscapes behind them.
