The 4th Secret of the One Minute Manager: A Powerful Way to Make Things Better – A Business Parable on Correcting Mistakes and Repairing Relationships at Work and at Home

Rate this book
With The One Minute Manager Ken Blanchard and coauthor Spencer Johnson forever changed the way we approach management by introducing their Three One Minute Goals, One Minute Praisings and One Minute Reprimands. The book became an international bestseller and remains a timeless classic. Blanchard, along with coauthor Margret McBride, presents the 4th Secret, a concept that, when implemented properly, is one of the most powerful actions for improving company and employee morale. This is a book that can extend well beyond the business realm and repair relationships that we thought were broken forever. Using Blanchard's signature breezy style, The 4th Secret of the One Minute Manager tells the story of a bright young man, Matt Hawkins, who wants to help his mentor, the company president, face and deal with some crucial mistakes. For advice, Matt turns to family friend Jack Peterson, known by everyone as the One Minute Manager. What begins as a beautiful country weekend turns into an enlightening few days when Matt discovers how to take action effectively when we have done something wrong. Through this engaging parable, Blanchard and McBride teach readers step-by-step how to accept responsibility for their errors and deal with the cause of the damage while maintaining a genuine sense of integrity. Destined to join Ken Blanchard's other groundbreaking classics, The 4th Secret of the One Minute Manager offers businesspeople—and just about anyone else—a cogent and clearheaded way of approaching one of life's most perplexing how to accept that we have made a wrong decision and how to correct it by making a meaningful apology. The techniques described in this simple but profound story will have significant results at work and at home.

I must admit to being a fan of Blanchard's work.

What is the fourth secret? It's the One Minute Apology. When you make a mistake, when you screw up, admit it and apologize.

As a leader or manager, your mistakes can cause harm to other people. Of all the people in the company, you have the bigger obligation to learn the SKILL of apologizing.

A One Minute Apology...
Begins with Honesty
Ends with Integrity

An important idea in this book is that apologizing isn't just for when YOU screw up, it is also a skill for making others apologize when they screw up. Yes, you have a right and obligation to ask for an apology when someone else screws up and it affects you. Blanchard tells you how to do this in way that preserves relationships.

The final book notes highlight the questions you must ask yourself before you make an apology (or demand one).

Making things better is always favorable, isn't it? But, fell flat compared to who moved my cheese (Spencer Johnson). Honsty, integrity, confidence and humility are all addressed in this quick - and I mean super quick read. Just, didn't get much out of it. Could have been better, but I don't have a suggestion as to how. I just think there's better things to spend time on than this one- he's (Ken Blanchard) genuinely a very engaging and motivational writer.

Lovely😍

A very quick read. I'm glad this book did take on the topic of when the leader/manager has made a mistake. While I still believe in the ideals of the one minute manager, this book tackled a topic that was not covered in the original. A keeper in my business book library.

The most important leadership quality is humility, and this book provides very helpful tips on how to practice humility by apologizing when you make a mistake. 5 star concept very well written. I am just not a fan of the story style of the book. That’s why it’s only 4. Overall, fantastic (and quick) read!
