Sam and his wife, Annie, are torn apart by the death of their young daughter. Sam wraps himself in his work in the hospital and Annie leaves home to work as a journalist.
They are angry with each other, and also with God, and they are in danger of losing their faith. But God, through circumstances and the people they meet, such as Ginny, Elijah and Mrs Rogers, is gently and persistently calling them home.
