I'm reading a lot of classic Ravenloft stuff at the moment, I think because I'd always underappreciated the setting. I thought it merely the setting for Strahd, but on discovering its Gothic depth, I am coming to appreciate it as maybe my favourite standard Dungeons and Dragons setting. This is another compelling insight into the world, and for players too - the world of Ravenloft feels cohesive and compelling in the pages of this book. Well worth reading for anyone who wants to play in the setting, regardless of what edition of D&D one may be using.
I've been a gamer since I was a teenager but I was never able to get into either DnD or fantasy. I'm not much of a fantasy fan in general and DnD seemed more concerned the rules minutia than actual storytelling.
Ravenloft is one of my favorite fantasy worlds of all time.
Imagine a fantasy setting based around Hammer horror films and gothic dread. Monsters aren't just XP stab-bait but rich characters with tragic back stories, doomed by their own hubris. It's creepy and evocative and really cool
