I have to say, I'm more impressed with this series the more I read of it. The relationships in this are rather complex. Ninako loves Ren, who already has a girlfriend. This becomes even more complicated further on in the series, but what makes this even more difficult in this volume has to be the extra chapter at the end.
You can't help but root for Ninako even though she (and the reader) knows that it's wrong for her to continue to pursue Ren. She claims that she just wants to be his friend, but it's easy to see that despite her good intentions, Ninako is deep down hoping that Ren will turn to her. I doubt that she herself really realizes this, but it's a decently ugly edge to her character that makes her more than just the cute innocent girl that she's otherwise portrayed to be.
What really pushes this series past the score of similarly themed manga would have to be that it tries really hard not to portray anyone as "bad" so far. Ren's girlfriend Mayuka would be so easily made into a bad guy, if not for her whole-hearted love for Ren and her somewhat tragic past. Granted, she's not the uber-tragic heroine, but her initial inability to move past the breakup of her family and her early interactions with Ren make for an appealing character. I like that she's the type of girl that we'd be rooting for if the focus of the series was on her rather than on Ninako.
Also good is that I really can't predict how the series will end. Will she end up with Ren? Someone else? I'm glad I gave the second volume a try because this really is a more promising series than I'd initially given it credit for.
3.75⭐️ Review on IG: @xojazzle I have mixed feelings for this volume. I almost gave it 3 stars but the bonus story with how ren and mayuka met and started dating saved this volume so let’s talk about that first. I really liked their little story, it was so cute! I think understanding how they got together makes their relationship super special. I already liked mayuka bc I thought she was nice and seeing how ren treated her?? Love it! He tried to act more mature so she felt comfortable sharing her feelings🥹 I think they’re so cute and this just made me more annoyed w why I was annoyed with this volume in the first place lol I hateeeee how ninako is still acting even though she knows he has a gf. I know she isn’t necessarily making a move but I feel like she’s trying to play the victim of her being upset all the time bc he has a gf and it’s like??? HE HAS A GF LIKE MOVE ON. Idk that just rlly bothers me lol & ren kind of continuing to entertain it. I do, however, like the added mix of ando. I hope ninako just goes for him bc I’m a lover for the reformed playboy but i think ando is going to end up pushing ren to break up w his gf and go for ninako. Idk, I have very mixed emotions lol
I enjoyed volume one, but I loved volume two! I don't know what happened, but this volume made me feel a genuine interest in these characters and want to see how things will unfold. None of the characters are acting as I thought they would, except probably Ninako. She is so sweet and I just love when a heroine can see past the tough exterior to someone's heart. It makes her so charming without her even realizing!
I deeply enjoyed the new character Ando! He brings such humor due to the different reactions around him and excited to see his role in this story!
I did enjoy the bonus chapter at the end! I thought I might not, but it was fun seeing into Ren's past and getting to see why he acts the way he does.
The story is really freaking amazing, but I'm having a hard time telling all the girls apart. They all look the same and it makes it super difficult to remember who is who.
I just want to register my appreciation for a book that's written from the point of view of a smitten girl that doesn't cast her crush's current girlfriend as a bitch. That Ren's girlfriend is a genuinely nice girl and has an authentically touching romance with Ren herself is quite a change of pace. It's quite a change from the wish fulfillment "his girlfriend is really a bitch so it's ok if I follow him around and hit on him and he'll eventually realize that I'm perfect for him anyways" that I see too much of.
UGH REN & MAYUKA’S STORY MAKES ME SAD. I really love that the snippet of their story is about Ren trying to act more mature for her, but then in the current chapter he’s kinda acting like a kid & avoiding Ninako. But on that—REN GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER!!! STOP MAKING HER SAD!!! I LOVE YOU BUT STOP!!
This was sooo much better than the first volume! Everyone's growing into more mature people. The main relationship is still slow as molasses, but I love all the fleeting interactions between Ren and Ninako. Also, how much do i love that Ren's character isn't painted black and white but has so many interesting shades. The chapter on Ren and Mayuka was easily the highlight of this volume. So often, in these type of shoju mangas, we have the girlfriend as someone bitchy and manipulative. That really makes the male lead look bad because if she's so terrible why are you with her?? But here, Mayuka is someone who easily compliments Ren. Her character and personality, and even the way she meets and falls in love with Ren, make sense. It adds that extra level of realism when you realize non of these characters are meant to be caricatures, but have layers and backstories like real people. Consider me hooked! 3.5 stars
This is a very interesting volume and it is clear that Ren`s feelings for Ninako is growing. I also love that Ando is introduced,he is such a charming character! The bonus story with how Ren & Mayuka met is interesting as well, kind of sad with how Mayuka knew that Ren would sooner or later meet his soulmate in another girl. [image error]
¿Me gustó?

God, Daiki is so annoying. I remember liking Ando, but he's kind of annoying too. He is the second love interest tho and I'm always drawn to them. I like this story of first love and growing out of relationships.
Well crap. I freaking adore this series right now... "Even if the person you love loves someone else...You still love them. You can't help it."
I used to detest shoujo. I used to like romance anime when I was younger, but reading shoujo manga irked me to no end with its shallow, impulsive, tstl heroines. Had I realized sooner though that this was common to the genre, but most certainly not what this was about, I would have paid more attention to it. So when I read Kamisama Kiss I started to look for more shoujo to read, and while I haven't found a series that's captured my heart quite like that one has, I definitely have come to find little gems along the way, like Library Wars and Strobe Edge.
In this volume we get some development for the popular manwhore of the school, Ando.
EXCEPT, this guy is actually not unlikable!! *Mind=Blown*. I have NEVER liked the playboy characters in any kind of medium so to say that I have started to root for him has just made me reevaluate myself several times. He's started to see girls no longer as things to use. He's never experienced love and after seeing the adoration Ninako has for Ren, it stuns him. He becomes so attune to her feelings that he gets her out of close calls where her feelings might resurface and mess up the friendship she has with Ren.
Of course, being as "experienced" (horny) that he is, Ando can't keep his hands to himself. Sure, he's comforting her in times of need, but he leans in to kiss her forehead and naturally, freaks out Ninako. Seeing as Ando has so much experience with women, but can't seem to learn the ways of real romance is hilarious and heartwarming to watch. He's just like Ninako and seeing this is making me wonder what it would be like if he became the main love interest...though I doubt it.
Still, I am beyond pleased with his character.
And then we get some harsh life lessons. Jealousy, intimidation, feeling self-conscious, first love, bullying, friendship, friend zone, etc. all that is here. And handled so tastefully that I have to applaud the mangaka. The bullying isn't there to make the heroine seem like a saint. They're there to show that you can stand up to them, that you don't have to take their crap.
And Ren is stupid in this volume. Like srsly dude? However, because Ninako loves him, I gotta root for him to come around. And it better be handled well since he's got a girlfriend.
This volume is the one that raised my estimate of the manga from just pretty school shoujo romance to very good school shoujo romance - Ninako deals with the fall-out of her impulsive but honest confession on the train platform, which a lot of pupils from the school saw.
She managed to get Ren to promise he would still talk to her normally, if they saw each other, but that is a two-edged sword, as eventually even a close friend of Ren points out: it may still raise her emotional hopes, although she knows he's taken. She can't move on.
There are occasions again and again (both Ren and her are in the school fair committee) to see his casual kindness and just enjoy being with him and it widens her heart, while also crushing it. While shopping for the committee, the two boys and Ninako even run into Ren's girlfriend and she's totally nice to Ninako - especially because she's the girl her brother liked for so long (there's a lovely secondary romance between Daiki and Saiyuri, one of Ninako's girlfriends - three cheers for having a friendly girl clique around Ninako, even if they aren't as well developed as Ayane and Chizuru in Kimi ni Todoke).
Then there's the added complication of a new student in school, Ando, who used to be in Ren's class in middle school and seems to not-quite be a friend. He can see Ninako's crush from a mile-off and it makes him interested in her, just to annoy Ren at first.
But when Ninako gets invited into the rejected-by-Ren club of girls, who just get together to badmouth him (and Ren and Ando overhear this), and her honest nature makes her tell those girls exactly what she thinks of them and that just because you love someone, they don't have to love you back and it doesn't make them a bad person not do so - well, this point really makes both boys take notice of her for herself and not just a cute, too-direct and puppyish girl.
Very nicely hinted at, in the case of Ren, who now knows that Ninako really meant what she said to and about him - and opens up to her in a way (not romantically) that he has to no other girl except his girlfriend.
And the story of how his girlfriend and him got together takes up a huge part of this volume and beautifully illustrates, as Sakisaka-sensei says, that there are no black & white characters in this series, even if they might seem so at first. Sometimes there are just nice people and you don't know what to do.

It still throws me off when I find single volume manga in hardback. Something weird that usually only happens with library books.
Anyway, Ninako has confessed to Ren knowing his has a girlfriend just after turning down Daiki's confession. So Daiki likes Ninako and Ninako likes Ren but Ren is dating Mayuka. Mayuka happens to be Daiki's sister but Ninako's friend Sayuri has confessed that she likes Daiki. So Daiki is now teetering between his old feelings and his new feelings. Ninako is trying to be happy just being friends but a new character has made this whole situation even more complicated: Ren's friend Ando the womanizer.
There's also a bonus chapter at the end of this volume that goes over how Mayuka and Ren ended up together. And now I'm curious how Ren and Ninako could end up together.
This series is looking up! Ninako is staying true to her love, but it's hard, especially when Ren has such an amazing girlfriend. There's no bad guys here, but a lot of bad timing. I like how this is growing more complex as it goes, and how there are no easy answers. You really don't know who's going to wind up with whom. I like the introduction of Ando and can't wait to know him better.
Cute. I can see Ren trying his best but I know one of his love interests are going to get hurt in the end- and I mean Mayuka... I also feel that he's a bit too plain, goody-two-shoes even. I don't know what he's feeling. But that last scene makes me question these thoughts about him.

All the love triangles! Can't wait to see what happens in the next one. With more love interests with the addition of Ando there are so many possibilities!
JEEZ, this manga needs an anime. An amazing, beautiful, PERFECT ANIME to go along with it!
So. My dear review readers. When I got to the library a few days ago to return Strobe Edge 1, Strobe Edge 2 already arrived for me! I literally jumped 100 feet into the air when I saw it! My library got ahold of volumes 1-6 so far, and I'm going crazy.
BEAUTIFUL ART. BEAUTIFUL STORY. It's just . . . it's just . . . . . .sa dfhusghsaigfnlsadfhunsalfjisajgf sadsf
ANYWAY, here's my review.
Love. What is . . . LOVE? *flails around for maximum dramatic affect* I think Ninako is super strong, with a strong heart. She KNOWS who she loves. She knows WHY.
SPOILERS AHEAD, MY LOVELIES, but continue on . . . if you so dare.
When Nina confessed to Ren, I face palmed, right there. Theresa: WHY WOULD YOU CONFESS, NINAKOOOOOH?! You KNOW he has a girlfriend. You KNOW he's not available!
It would hurt to be rejected more, wouldn't it? Yet she still wanted to let him know. It was like she was saying, "I love you. So I'm going to let you know. To let you know how amazing you really are."
Of course, he says, "I already have a girlfriend. So . . . NO. NO, I WILL NOT CHEAT!!!" Which is good. Cheaters are scum . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . CHEATERS ARE SCUM! SERIOUSLY! (Here we go . . . Theresa's random rant in the middle of a book review . . .)
I'm going to tell you a freaking story about cheaters, okay? Once upon a time, there was a girl in my 5th grade class named Eliz..........Let's just call her Egg. Egg was dating a boy. Let's call him Banana. Of course Banana liked Egg. And Egg liked Banana. But one day, Apple asked Egg out. Egg said, "No! I will not go out with you! Ahahahahaha!" And Apple was like, "Alright then. FINE." and sashayed away. But Egg realized . . . WHAT HAS SHE DONE??! So she goes to Banana and says, "I'm breaking up with you, Banana," and sashays away before he could even respond. Of course Banana is hurt. Egg goes to Apple and says, "Okay, I'll go out with you!" But Apple simply narrows his eyes at her and says . . . "No. I don't want to date you, I changed my mind." Egg shrugs. Oh well. She goes back to Banana and says, "Okay, sorry, nevermind. We're back together again!" And Banana glares at Egg and says, "ARE YOU CRAZY?! NO, I'm not getting back together with you!" And so Egg is now all alone. Because she was selfish.
. . . . I guess that's not cheating because she did break up with Banana before she tried to get together with Apple, but still . . . it is sort of two timing. To use two guys to her advantage so that she could get whatever she wanted--NO! Guys might be dummies, but they're people too!
I don't know why I told that story . . . . . .
Anyway, Ninako was really, really, really strong in here, that's why I like her character. Even though she was rejected. Even though the love she had did not love her back, she didn't care. She kept loving him anyway, even though it hurt. It was okay to her. She didn't want to move on. THAT'S what I admire about this girl. That takes GUTS. SPUNK. MOXXY. (I just quoted a movie there, ohohohohoho!!!) But really. Really, that does take guts, and a strong heart, and a strong love.
This volume is also the volume where Mayuka appears. The pretty girlfriend, the MODEL, the girl the readers are jealous of. And though some fangirls might say, "NO MAYUKA, GET OUT! Ren belongs to NIIIINAAAAAA!" I don't dislike Mayuka. But think about how Mayuka loves Ren. She really does care for him, she DOES. Because he was there for her when she needed him, and she realized that. But she's in a state of love where she's AFRAID. Afraid that some girl might take Ren away, or that Ren might try to go somewhere else. She thinks that she's not enough to hold Ren by her side, and THAT, my fellow review readers, is VERY VERY DANGEROUS TO THINK INDEED.
That's why she's a model. Maybe if she was a model, it'd give Ren a reason to stay with her. Even if you couldn't eat as much cake as you wanted. (*sigh)
But when I think about it, it's shallow. It's a shallow way of thinking. Even if she wasn't a model, Ren would stay with her--it was obvious, right? They'd also have more time to spend with each other. And if I was a model, I would want the guy I'm dating to date me only because I'm a model! Gaaaah . . . Mayuka . . . . . . .
The whole irony is . . . in the end, Mayuka . . . (*OOOOPS, almost said too much. MOVING ON.) Maybe I do want to bop Mayuka in the head after all . . . . . .
Anyway, it's really cute how Ren realizes that Ninako really does love him, especially after she proves it. Those ex-Ren-fangirls were ganging up on Ninako all like
"COME JOIN UUUUSSSSSSS! We don't deserve to be rejected! Any guy who rejects us REJECTS BEAUTY AND LIFE! Come with us . . . come with uuuuuusssssssss!"
and pretty much insulting him saying
"He probably thinks he's some kind of KING, rejecting all of us! Does he enjoy it?! Does he bask in having all these girls confess to him??"
and they step closer and closer, fangs popping out of their mouths and horns growing out of their heads.
Just kidding, they don't really do that, but they might as well have because Ninako was like
"OHEMGEEZAY, NO! I will NOT JOIN YOU! I still love Ren! You can charge at me ALLL YOU WANT, but I'm as stubborn as an ox!"
And even though those girls now disapprove of her and think she's foolish and crazy, Ninako didn't mind. She didn't ever once think that liking Ren was a burden at all.
And that is something to admire.
5 stars. Of course I know what happens in the next few volumes because I did read up to volume 6 on Mangafox. But now that the books are at my library (like a miracle sent by the angel of lovey dovey romancey books), I don't mind rereading and actually finishing this time.
Oh, and if you would . . . . . . . . . TumTum? (Tumblr?) If you could click on this link and scroll about, possibly follow and come Tumbling with me, I would love that so much.
For my review from AS OF NOVEMBER 5, 2011, PLEASE SCROLL DOWN BELOW! I'm redoing all my S.E. reviews, but I'll keep the old ones there, just because it'll tear me up to delete them.
AS OF NOV. 5, 2011 HYAAAAAH! Amazing! Magnificent! Adorable! Cute! Awesome! TOTALLY, ABSOLUTELY, AND POSITIVELY NINJA!!!! (And apparently, this review is the first review for Strobe Edge volume 2--HOORAY!)
So anyway, if you haven't read my review of Strobe Edge Vol. 1, please go check that out before you read Vol. 2. (Because every one of my reviews for this series have spoilers in them and the only reason you've decided to read my Vol. 2 review is because you want to read my spoilers, right?? Although, if that isn't the case, please read this volume first AND THEN read this review! Or if you dare to proceed without reading Vol. 2 first, be my guest . . . don't say you weren't warned!)
Anyway, before I post my boundary line, I would like to say that this volume of Strobe Edge also recieves a 5-stars!!! I rarely give out 5-star ratings, but this was just way too awesome for a 4-star!!!!
Alrighty, onto the epic Spoiler Boundary Line!!!!!
____ _| |_ (<-epic spoiler arrow) OH MY GOD IT'S STILL CROOKED! \ / \ / \/
--------SPOILER BOUNDARY LINE!!!----------
Alrighty, so continuing on . . .
Basically, leaving off from volume 1, Ninako confesses her love towards Ren. Ren calmly thanks her, but says that he's already seeing someone. So...Ninako. Was. REJECTED.
But Ninako still wants to remain friends in order to keep talking to Ren the same way, and to remain friends. I LOVE THE EXAMPLE THAT SHE SETS HERE BECAUSE SOME GIRLS--WHEN REJECTED--START TO AVOID WHO THEY REJECT AS IF THEY WEREN'T EVER IN LOVE WITH THEM!! Anyway, Ninako still has her feelings towards Ren, even though they're unrequited. (TRUE LOVE, HYAAAH!) So in this volume, Ninako attempts to talk to Ren when he walks down the hallway, and she accidentally mistakens another dude for Ren. Andou is a somewhat arrogant ladies man, so I have a feeling that he'll be a major character. A while later, Ninako is confronted by a group of girls. They reveal that they are the group of girls that have been rejected by Ren and that they understand Ninako's feelings. However, they begin to mention how it was jerky that Ren had the nerve to reject so many girls. They begin to say horrible things about Ren. Andou, watching what is happening from the 2nd floor, invites Ren to come see what's happening. Ren witnesses Ninako defending Ren, asking "Were you guys really in love with Ren?" Because she notices that the girls around her don't understand that Ren rejected them only because he was already dating someone. Ninako reveals that regardless of being rejected, she still likes Ren because she knows that beyond his exterior looks, he's really kind. The girls leave Ninako, stating that she's being decieved. THIS IS A LIFE LESSON STATING THAT WHEN YOU LOVE SOMEONE, YOU DO NOT GET UPSET WHEN THEY REJECT YOU!! Being in love means that regardless of their feelings towards you, you still love them the same way. And you notice the good things about them!! I love life lessons like these. Anyway, I'm glad Ren was able to hear Ninako say this. ^w^ I feel a hint of love in the air!!
Ren's girlfriend, Mayuka, is also introduced in this series. When the four of them, Ren, Mayuka, Ninako, and Andou decide to go shopping together, Ninako realizes how kind of a person that Mayuka is. But she also realizes that her liking Ren probably won't effect Ren and Mayuka. However, when Mayuka and Ren cross the street, and Andou and Ninako accidentally get caught by the red light, Andou grabs Ninako's hand and runs away with her. Ren, seeing Andou pulling Ninako away, attempts to go after them, but Mayuka states that there's not much left to shop for, so she suggests that Ren should let them be. However, Ren keeps turning around and pondering where Andou and Ninako could have gone. COULD THIS BE A SIGN OF JEALOUSY?! OHOHOHOHO y'know, this review is looking more like a volume summary than a review . . .
Anyway, in the next chapter, Ren confronts Andou and tells him not to hurt Ninako by making her one of the many girls that Andou tries dating. Andou bluntly deletes all the other girls' numbers off of his phone, showing that he won't do anything like that to Ninako. However, when Ninako is crying because she feels that Ren is angry at her, Andou kisses Ninako on the forehead, which I really think is adorable. The next thing Ninako does is run away. I laughed at this because if I were in the same situation, I'd probably run away too. (I run away from EVERYTHING. My best friend says "Theresa, what are you going to do when you're in a wheel chair?" She suggests that I shall "Roll away!" which is most likely to happen, but ANYWAY . . .)
Ninako runs into Ren, and when Ren hears Andou calling after Ninako, he pulls her into a room in order to hide. When Ninako notices that Andou's calls are getting fainter, she tells Ren that everything is okay. But he still continues to hold onto Ninako--AAAAAAAAAAAH!
WHAT. AN. AMAZING CLIFFHANGER!!! EEEEEEYAAAAH!!!!!
So anyway, yes, this volume was very, very, very adorable. :) I love it's originality, the art, and the fact that this manga made me smile. So yes--it recieves a whopping 5-stars--WHOO HOO.
Anyway, there is one more chapter in the volume. It's basically Chapter 7.5 and it's a chapter about how Mayuka and Ren meet.
First the love between them grows fairly fast. Ren was being bullied by macho dudes, and Mayuka grabs him and runs away, fooling the machos and saying "AAAH! LITTLE BROTHER, WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE SO LATE?!" They continue to hang out with each other. When Mayuka finds out that her parents are getting divorced, she tells Ren--refusing to cry. Ren states that she doesn't have to be strong around him and she starts crying. This is basically how they realize that they like each other. They start dating, and Mayuka wonders if Ren will ever sprout wings and fly away from her (that's figuratively speaking, of course). When she tells Ren she has decided to work as a model, she doesn't get the response that she had hoped for. She begins to lose weight, and instead of being happy, Ren becomes concerned. Mayuka doesn't understand why he isn't happy because she's losing weight, becoming a model, and becoming prettier. She coldly states that she doesn't get why Ren doesn't understand, and how she doesn't get that Ren isn't happy with her becoming prettier. In the next few pages, she breaks up with Ren saying "I'm tired of dating you." purely because he isn't happy with how she's changing. However, she notices what she's done and she quickly takes back what she said. That is how fast the break up and the reunion occurred. This manga made it cute, but if I ever saw that in real life, it'd just be really weird.
Anyway yeah . . . this review was more of a summarizing thing, but ANYWAY!!! I totally looking forward to volume 3!!
This was a really long review/summarizing thing just for one manga volume. Ahaha...anyway, I hope those of you who've read my review are looking forward to volume 3 as well!!
