It starts when Nathan is out walking in the fields with his dog. Something is watching him - something menacing and dangerous. Something without a shape, that he can't get out of his head. The Creature. Then there's the noises he starts to hear in the attic. Shuffling. Scratching. Even a voice. The Bogeyman. Somehow Nathan knows that the Creature and the Bogeyman are the same thing. And whatever it is, it's after him. As soon as it's strong enough, it will show Nathan what it really wants. And it's growing stronger all the time...
Shadow Bringer is a psychological thriller written to perfection. Right from the first words, I was captured and catapulted into this dark, mysterious world. It is completely and utterly absorbing and won't let you go until the last page! So warning, if you choose to read it, make sure you set yourself a few hours aside, because 15 minutes on the bus just won't cut it with this one!
The Creature is a horrifying being, lurking just out of the corner of Nathan's eye. Just waiting. Calcutt's characters are brilliant and match perfectly. He's blended reality, and magic together to form this stunning story. To me, the way that I see it, it's taking what we know to be real, and what we sometimes think to be real which can be a scary thing when melded together. The mind plays tricks.
It's a bit hard to explain really what I liked about this book, because it's pretty much everything. It's so perfectly weaved that I could spoil the story and this is one that everyone should enjoy as they read it, not hear tidbits and then read it. I really cannot recommend this book enough. An atmospheric piece of brilliance that will be enjoyed by adults and children alike!
Nathan is a boy of indeterminate age (somewhere between 8 & 12, I would guess, from his behaviour in the story) who sees a UFO. It looks like a black bin-liner in the sky, but it falls into a pond, and when he goes to investigate the dog he is taking for a walk gets scared.
Rasha is a girl about a year older than Nathan who is prepared by an old woman to battle a monster in another world. eventually their paths cross, and Nathan realises that he has to battle a monster that can take many forms, and sows discord in the family he is staying with.
I thought the book was good in showing how the menace of evil manifests itself in day-to-day life. Everyday activities, like making tea and sandwiches, is shot through with the threat of something that is there and not there. But at the end little is resolved. We can see that evil causes conflict, but too many things seem to be unresolved. Of course in real life many things are left unresolved, and conflict is sometimes followed by reconciliation and sometimes not, but in this book one doesn't know.
Only giving it 3 stars as I enjoyed the idea of the story but the writing style is very monotone and robotic. It's like a running commentary on everything. It's very tell, not show
After recently reading Patrick Ness' "Monster" this book was the perfect next read. Much more scary than Ness' book, Shadow Bringer tell the tale of a creature from the beginning of time that lurks in the shadows waiting to take form to bring destruction wherever it goes. A girl from another world is sent to vanquish it and in the middle is a lonely young boy whose father has just left and whose mother has taken a retreat to gather herself together. Super poetic language that takes on a rhythm of its own and a real page-turner that made the hairs on my arms stand up. Perfect for 8+ children who want to know all about the Bogeyman!
Another thought-provoking, imaginative and layered offering from this new exciting writer. This book, just like his last book 'Crowboy', is aimed at a younger reader, yet it is deceptively adult in its telling. His books seamlessly cross the divide between younger reader and adult reader, a rare gift in todays saturated market.
i thoght this book was really interesting and great. OI didnt just pick this book myself, one of my friends recommended it to me.
I think it was really horrible the way the boys cousin treated him and would hate for someone to treat me in this way AMAZING BOOK--I would definately read this book a second time.
Shadow Bringer by David Calcutt - If you have a fan of A Monster Calls, then you have an excellent book to connect them with next... this has that same theme in a beautiful twisted perspective both feeling ancient and present day. Quite a powerful yet quick book to enjoy.
i was not very kean on this book. my friend recommened it to me and i got to chapter 4 and gave up. there was nothing wrong with it, it just wasnt my type of book.
"He went to eat. He got a toast. And then he ..." Horrible written, boring plot, and characters without characteristics. I skimmed the ending because I just wanted to get it over with.
