A Tale of Two Goblins

Rate this book
Dulcie O’Neil is a fairy working in law enforcement for the netherworld. When knight Vander approaches her with a case regarding comatose victims, she agrees to help him, imagining the most difficult part will be combatting her attraction to him.

But, what Dulcie isn’t betting on is the fact that the case becomes personal when she learns all the victims are somehow linked to her.

When her best friend falls victim to the Dreamstalker, Dulcie must do everything in her power to ensure her friend’s survival, including associating with criminals and accepting the fact that desperate times do definitely call for desperate measures.

I’m a huge fan of anything paranormal and I always have been. I get super excited whenever they have those Twilight Zone Marathon days and anything ghost or vampire related will always attract my attention.

My interests are varied but aside from writing, I’m most excited about traveling. I’m extremely fortunate to have been able to live in England and Scotland, both places really having a profound effect on my books.

Thanks for checking out my books and I hope you enjoy them! Happy Haunting!

Dulcie has left the ANC, but Knight has her working as a consultant on cases. Their latest case involves some kind of supernatural that leaves his/her victims in a coma initially before coming back to kill them later while they sleep. The MO is very similar to a Dreamstalker; however, the only two Dreamstalkers in existence are currently locked up. Once Dulcie determines that all the victims have a connection to her, she realizes the killer is after her. She resorts to an illegal drug to stay awake and out of the killer's clutches while she struggles to find out the killer's identity.

These are fun, quick reads. I like Dulcie. She shows her vulnerable side in this one as she struggles with an addiction to the drug that keeps her awake. And I love the tension that is built between all the various guys that have the hots for her. Of course, Knight is my favorite but Bram and Quillian have things going for them too. I'll definitely be continuing the series at my leisure to see what develops with each of them.

A Tale of Two Goblins was a delightful surprise and a great read!
The spunky, independent fairy is back and better then ever.
There is a Dreamstalker going after people that are connected to Dulcie, causing them to drop into a coma and eventually die, but when Dulcie’s best friend Sam falls victim the stakes are raised even higher. Teaming up with the sexy Knight once again it’s a race against time while things start to heat up in other matters, and not just because he is a Loki.

The first half of the novel moved a bit slow and I was worried that I’d have the same feelings for it as I did To Kill a Warlock. But by the second half of the book, what I found lacking in the first (romance, chemistry, character/relationship development) was more then made up for here, and by the end I didn’t want it to stop! And lawd, the way it ended was killer, just when we got to what I’ve been waiting for throughout these two books. Evil, evil author…
Plenty of action, mystery and suspense to keep readers entertained and the continuing sub plot of Dulcie’s writing a new paranormal novel adds a fun aspect to the story. The plot itself was good and really kept me guessing as to whom the villain was.

I still enjoyed the secondary characters more then the main character Dulcie, especially the love interest Knight, but Dulcie’s growing on me and I’m eagerly anticipating the next installment in this series. A fun quick read.

I am so glad I came back to this series. Dulcie is a unique character who wouldn't let me forget her. I liked her job, and yes, I know she isn't part of law enforcement anymore, but I still needed more of her brand of wit.

When Dulcie's best friend becomes a victim of the Dreamstalker, a goblin that can and does toy with you and can kill you in your dreams, Dulcie isn't about to stand by and let that happen.

She and Knight are working through a lot at the same time. And the netherworld isn't just going to forget that she didn't apprehend her boss for all the bad he was doing.
But Knight has a plan.

Fantastic narration. Therese Plummer is excellent with voices. I, for one, couldn't stop listening.

Quick Take: Dulcie does it again! This installment delivered on every promise made by its predecessor; it was above all fun, engaging, and charming.

Review:
I was so excited to pick up and read the second book in the Dulcie O'Neil series by H.P. Mallory, having enjoyed the first one so much. As with book one, the cast is the big draw. Technically, there aren't that many figures to keep track of--which is fine by me. It means more face time for the fab five (Dulcie, Knight, Trey, Sam, and Dia). ^_^ Dulcie in particular is in fine form: she's a magnetic character, with different facets to her personality that provide plausible and engaging expression in scenes both light hearted and somber.

I get the sense that the author is deliberately keeping a steady pace in revealing her fictional world and in progressing the broader story arcs. I like that! I can see the series continuing to thrill with new elements and twists, even several books down the road (and geez, I HOPE there will be a "several books down the road" to speak of!).

This book deals with a creature that stalks and terrorizes people's dreams. As such, there are a few dream sequences, some of which are meant to be ambiguously identified ("Is this someone's dream?") and others which are very clearly nocturnal reveries. In one, the dreamer is even consciously observing her own dream. The devices used for these sequences could've been confusing as flip, but instead worked out wonderfully and intriguingly.

Honestly, the third book cannot come soon enough ("soon enough" is August 2011, by the way...but still so far off!!!); I simply must know how the cast of characters develop and fare in their respective conundrums. A Tale of Two Goblins more than proved that the Dulcie O'Neil series will be one to look out for in the future. Moreover, it's put Ms. Mallory on my auto-buy list, for sure!

The Dulcie O’Neil series has quickly won me over. I love the fun, light-hearted feel to the books. Yes, the characters face dark creatures, and fight bad guys, but there is plenty of humor and all-around great entertainment. The main characters are back in action, from Dulcie, Knight, Bram, even Quillan. I did miss Sam a bit, though, as she spent most of the book a victim of the Dreamstalker. However, Dulcie faced the villains head-on and went to deep, dark depths out of loyalty for her friend. That fierce loyalty drew me to love Dulcie that much more. She is an imperfect heroine, who happens to have fairy magic and human hang-ups.
While A Tale of Two Goblins is an urban fantasy book, there are hints of romance. I really like how HP Mallory gives Dulcie’s character several options on the romance front. There is Knight-the handsome new boss, Quillan-the disgraced former boss, and Bram-the handsome vampire, and they are all attracted to Dulcie. They give the story a spicy edge that manages to be light-hearted at the same time. There is plenty of room for possibility, and I am looking forward to finding out what happens next.
After reading both of the Dulcie O’Neil books, I will say that I am a huge fan. Book 2 was even better than book 1, and I can’t wait to read more Dulcie O’Neil books in the future. to top it off, the books are very affordable at amazon, these books are an awesome deal. HP Mallory has a new fan! I highly recommend this series to Urban Fantasy fans.

Dulcie O'neil is the ultimate Mary Sue of characters. This book has its moments- it really does- but I see much more telling than showing and it gets tiresome. Dulcie gets drooled over (and either almost-raped or forcefully made out with) by literally every single hot dude in the story. The reader is told many times throughout the story that Dulcie Is So Amazing, but she makes rookie, dangerous moves and it's not apparent by Dulcie's actions what, exactly, makes her The Best Cop Ever. I really wanted to like this series, but the combination of the super-forced characters and the completely out-of-the-blue villain has solidified my decision to not read the next novels in the series.

Just when you think her books can't possibly get any better...H.P. Mallory proves you wrong!

A Tale of Two Goblins has an extra pinch of fairy dust that makes it that more special than the first book! There's more action, mystery and romance, along with the side-splitting humor that is H.P. Mallory's trademark. If you're a lover of the paranormal and want a lighter and fun read without stepping away from the genre, look no further and definitely check out this series!

SPOILERS for To Kill A Warlock (Dulcie O’Neil #1):

A Tale of Two Goblins gets us back in the action with the much-loved fairy Dulcie O’Neil. At the end of To Kill A Warlock she left A.N.S (Association for Netherworld Creatures) because of the outcome of the last case she was working on. (Quill: Shame on you!) She agreed to the role of consultant when A.N.S. needs her. Hopefully this will give her time to deal with the emotional backlash triggered by the events of book 1. It also means more time to work on her novel.

Acting Chief of Headquarters (& super hot Loki) ,Knight, approaches Dulcie about a case involving a possible Dreamstalker who has rendered several victims unconscious and trapped between a state of life and death. When Dulcie realizes she has a connection to almost all of the victims she becomes concerned it might be personal, and she quickly agrees to help. Over the course of the case Dulcie finds she has to make some tough choices to stay one step ahead of the Dreamstalker.

The sophomore novel in this UF series is just as full of action and suspense as its predecessor. It also has the snark and wit I’ve come to associate with the sassy fairy, Dulcie. Events do take a darker turn when Dulcie makes some hard choices in order to save the victims of the Dreamstalker. It fit and gave the plot a nice amount of depth. No fluff here!

She is still being pursued by some seriously hot guys and hasn’t dealt with her commitment issues (who can blame her!). I was thrilled that we got to know the men in Dulcie’s life a little better including the fascinating Bram. If you dig vampires, you will fall madly in love with him no doubt. Even after two books I still can’t decide who I think she should be with. I can’t even pick a favorite! They all have qualities that I need the romantic interest in books I read to possess. What a lucky fairy!

Not only does this series contain great characters, but the author also offers up a solid plot with multiple twists and turns. This is a series that is going places! If you are a fan of Urban Fantasy I recommend giving Dulcie O’Neil’s world a try.

This is the second in Mallory's Dulcie O'Neil series with vampires, werewolves, goblins, loki, witches, fairies, elves populating the streets of Splendor, CA along with the humans and a new threat causing people from Dulcie's past and present to fall into a coma for days before dying.

The chemistry between Dulcie and the three males who want her is off the charts. Bram, Knight, Sam, Trey are back helping Dulcie with this latest case. Quill even makes an appearance.

Bram is celebrating his 300th birthday as a vampire and is even more gorgeous than even and more enamored with Dulcie.

Knight, still his uber sexy and delicious self, is back to drag Dulcie into an ANC case and torment her with all his flirtations.

Quill, still his paranormal romance book cover sensual self, comes to Dulcie's rescue when she needs some not so legal help and when he thinks she needs assistance in a fight.

Enter Dia, a sleep goblin and Chief of nearby Moon ANC precinct to lend her help with the case as well.

Once again, even though the sexual tension is high, there is more talk than action in that area. In my humble opinion, Dulcie needs to give in and get her a little sumthin' sumthin' with at least one, if not all, of these three hunks she has panting after her.

Okay, so this is not strictly a paranormal romance anymore since, according to the authors who participated in the Is it Paranormal Romance or Urban Fantasy event in Sept 2011 on BittenByParanoramalRomance.com since it doesn't meet the requirement of a couple getting together and staying together in a single book. However, it has lots of humor, sexual chemistry, romance (in its way), studly gorgeous males and who cares if Dulcie hasn't made up her mind yet and we need to read more fun to find out? We get more of the characters this way.

Can't wait for the next book in the series.

Having enjoyed the first one so much, I was disappointed by the second. It was an okay read, but not as good. I kept putting off writing this review because I wasn’t exactly sure why I didn’t enjoy this one as much. After letting the thoughts percolate for a couple of weeks, I’ve come to realize it’s three different things.

The first reason is the love interest, or actually the lack of love interests. In the first book, there were three, and some could even say four guys, lusting after Dulcie. But in book two, it was mainly all Knight. Not that that’s a bad thing, but for me it just wasn’t as interesting as when she had a bunch of guys after her.

You do have a bit with the vampire, Brom, at the beginning, but then he disappears for pretty much the rest of the story. You also have Quin, who was her boss in the previous book, reappear. But this time their relationship is completely different. And as for the demon who runs the S&M club, he very briefly gets mentioned.

The second problem is the story didn’t have as much action as the previous one. Granted the bad guy was in a dream world, and when one is sleeping, not a lot goes on. But even when Dulcie and Knight were going around town looking for clues, it was not too exciting.

The final reason is it felt too short. It could be that I had purchased the six book set, and on the bottom of my Kindle it said 23% when the book ended. But that was because it was in regards the first two books, and there are four more to go. The story ended well, and there are a few threads dangling for the next book to start with, but I was just expecting more. This book is only 185 pages, so compared to the 300-500 page books I usually read, it is shorter.

Even though this book wasn’t as good as the first, I’m still looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Maybe Knight and Dulcie will cool off a bit, and she’ll end up hooking up with one of the other guys.

Well now. I've gone from 'like' to 'love' over the space of two books. I 'liked' the plot for book one, but I 'loved' the plot book two. It wasn't that it was better written either because the standard was already high, but it was just more interesting because it had such devastating repercussions for Duclie's personal life.

I also loved the new characters that were introduced. Dea, for example, was a nice surprise. I'd grown quite attached to her by the end. I hope she's a regular feature from now on. And getting to know the characters we'd already met before more... intimately was fun too. Especially Knight and Bran. Bran has his moments, but ultimately always ruins it for himself by being a total narcissist. And Knight....ah, Knight. I love Knight Vander!!! (Extra exclamations marks were required- you have no idea). I just can't hide it any longer. I need to confess it to someone. He's too cute/hot/sweet/arrogant/funny/sexy for words. And I think we saw a different side to him in this book, too. Okay, the Knight that we met in book one- the self-confessed "cocky bastard"- is still very much there, but we discovered new depths in A TALE OF TWO GOBLINS and were it a test, he would have passed with flying colours in the "is also a pretty freaking nice guy" department.

This book wasn't perfect. The BIG BAD was unguessable (my red squiggly line maker says unguessable isn't a word, but it so should be) and there were also some pretty major time discrepancies going on between what was said in book one, and what's said here in this one, which in the end I just decided to overlook and make it up for myself. So I was perhaps a bit generous giving it a full five stars (which is not like me at all!), but I enjoyed it so much it seemed mean to mark it down.

So here they are, a full house: 5 Stars! ★★★★★

Now go out and pick up this series right now!

H.P. Mallory has struck Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance Gold!

She has combined mystery, romance, supernatural creatures, thrown in a heaping spoonful of humor and *3 big hunks of burning alpha male . Put this all in a book and shake…you get a story that sings to me!

Let’s get the formalities out of the way…The story is told in the first person POV. Dulcie is a fun smart-mouth heroine and I don’t think I will ever get tired of being inside her head. All the secondary characters are quirky and well developed. The mystery and action are fast paced and clever. Mallory has done an excellent job of slowly revealing the main characters flaws and secrets. All the while, introducing us to a new and exciting world.

Now, onto the important things. We all read PNR (paranormal romance) for one reason, smexy men (okay, maybe I am generalizing, but let’s be honest ladies. ;) ) Dulcie has not one, not two, but three incredibly sexy alpha males who care (i.e. want to get in her pants, as she puts it) for her.

I must say that the covers of these books are fantastic as is the protagonist, smart and beautiful, a woman who can do magic but prefers to rely on itself and on the strength of his will and his ability to defend and investigate. Dulcie wants to be a writer and also writes a book about pirates, but I'll have to pull the mouth because paranormal romance, you do not find that ironic? But the thing I like is the story, but interesting, exciting, being actively involved from the first page and then book after book. We become attached to players, which are well described and have a character all its own. The fact that there are many jokes does not distract from the story and the personal lives of Dulcie and Knight: their relationship grows up and without forcing. Funny that when Dulcie curses, appoint Hade, and Knight is a Loki, a new character, and not much really. So this is not the usual fantasy book, but the original one, because reality and fantasy are intertwined in a realistic way in which the protagonists are are people with real problems and feelings

It's official, I am enjoying this series. Dulce is just too entertaining for her own good. She is a loyal friend, a badass fighter and apparently a really hot girl.

The book starts with Knight bringing Dulce on to a Dreamstalker case. What follows is Dulce finding herself in situation after situation, all with varying levels of hilarity, sadness and exhilaration. The author takes her heroine to places in this book that truly surprised me. Even with its light tone, this book has dark points and Dulcie truly reaches rock bottom.

I really enjoyed the fact that we got a deeper look into the world, the creatures and the magic. Now it's time to read more about Dulcie's past. Maybe it's not important, but when a character has an absent parent, I assume that parent is going to show up.

Dulcie is growing! Both as a character and as someone one wants to read about. In this, the second installment of the series, Dulcie's previous harsh, cynical attitude is softening. She is still the hard-nosed law enforcement fairy but she is softening just enough to make her both believable and likable. She has been given enough depth in this book to help the reader understand her motives while cheering for her loyalty and determination.
With twitsts and turns the reader can't figure out, a hero every single woman on planet earth would love, along with surprise ending no one would have imagined, it's a series that is quickly becoming addictive!

Arrrrgh, love the series, not so much the cliffhangers!! lol

There are actually more species of goblins than the two alluded to in the title and in the end the whodunnit plot was more sinister than which goblin to pick.

Dulcie has walked away from her paranormal law enforcement agency…but not quite, staying on as a consultant. When people start dropping off into comas and Knight comes calling, she springs back into action, in Dulcie- style, boldly going where she’s told not to go and doing stuff she shouldn’t be doing alone. Thank goodness for Bram and Knight and the other backing her up, tho. Loved the sizzly bits and banter between Dulcie and Knight, but that ending tho - killing me with those cliffhangers! Will have to go get the next book now.

Recommended for lovers of whodunnits, murder-mysteries and paranormal detective agencies with a headstrong FMC fairy who always has ideas of her own and grapples with the fact that multiple guys have the hots for her.

Dulcie has just finished her first novel and sent it off when she is contacted by the ANC, Association of Netherworld Creatures, police agency where she used to work, to assist on a difficult case. Knight, her former boss, wants her because it looks like many of the victims are people associated with her. They have been put into a coma by a ‘Dreamsnatcher’ and one victim has already died. All known dream snatchers are in prison so this is a mystery. Then Dulcie’s best friend, Sam, is put in a coma and Dulcie knows someone is targeting her. Dulcie must work with former colleagues and quasi (shady) friends to figure it out, often hovering on the edge of good and bad. It was an interesting premise, but I got lost in some of the lucid dreaming concepts. Dulcie also seems to be the desire of every man she knows and attracted to each of them for different reasons. I found this off putting.

Yes, we know....Knight is the hottest male in creation

Doesn't mean it has to be drummed into the reader every other paragraph. I kind of wish they'd get it over with and have sex, already.

Other than that fact and some repetitious editing issues, this series isn't a bad paranormal. There are many supernatural species, the bad guys vary in every book, and there are decent action scenes.

This installment introduces a new supporting character. The supporting characters in this series support the main characters nicely. The World Building could be better in regards to the supernaturals coexisting with humans. The plot sometimes moves slowly, but I still consider it a decent read.

Good but not great.

-- The addiction sub-plot was super glossed over. How handy that withdrawal only lasts 30 minutes in Dulcie's world. Why even bother with it when all it takes is a potion and 1/2 an hour to be over it forever? It sort of negates the reality of addiction.
-- The Big Bad was weirdly just some random person from Dulcie's past. Why not make it a real mystery and give us a few suspects and a few red herrings? I didn't care for the non-mystery in this book.
-- Nice to see Quillen helping Dulcie. I enjoyed the positive view of a "bad" character.
-- HP Mallory has gotten so much better in the years since writing this book. If this is your first of her novels, keep reading. :)

Sylvie needs to chill a little

I like that she is tough, but she also needs to learn to trust others and not always expect her way. Although admittedly, if she hadn't pushed for her way then Sam may have died. When Knight seeks her help with a case involving people who fall into a coma and die, the work with a sleep goblin to catch another of her kind who has gone rogue. The problem is, not everything is black or white. With the help of Quillan, Dulcie will have to face a foe in a dreams cape to save Sam and his other victims.

My struggle is her continued trust in Bram and Quill, but her refusal to listen to others who try to help her, namely Knight and Dia. Although she and Dia do eventually come become friends.

This series makes me grateful for my KU account. The series is SO BAD it's like a train wreck you can't look away from. Fortunately for the Author I've spent countless hours on planes, trains and automobiles in the last few days and needed something that wouldn't distract me from everything else going on.

Where do I start? The heroine, Dulcie is some piece of work. I thoroughly dislike her, I hate how she thinks she's the best at everything, I hate how she never listens to anyone around her, I hate how she's not a person who makes girlfriends but every man that lays eyes on her just wants to f*ck her. No one likes a bitch in heat, seriously.

Knight, I liked this guy initially but seriously, I'm not an alpha-male fan unless it's coupled with an equally bull-headed alpha-female, not some vapid ninny like Dulcie. The 'sexual tension' the author keeps referring to starts grating almost immediately. Just get your shit together already.

Even free I feel like I overpaid for this book...

I liked this one!!! We got to see a lot of character development from Dulcie, and from Knight, Quill, and others as well. Speaking of Knight… I’m hoping, praying, that Dulcie FINALLY gets her shit together and gets with the man in the next book! We saw a different, very caring side to him in this one, and I’m just dying for them to get together. On to the next!

Fantastic and fun

Fun characters, emotional pull, surprise, smiles, and even bittersweet. It's got it all and I'm going to read the whole series. Oh and that illustration for the cover is beautiful, great job all around.

Sleep Tight

Adult content, reader discretion advised. Dulce is at it again, finding trouble. Or more accurately, trouble finding her. Quillan, Bram and Knight are all still enamored with her. She is still keeping them all at an arms length.
