Prince of Wolves

Rate this book
Through with running from the past, Joelle Randall has come to the rugged Canadian Rockies determined to face her pain and begin anew. All she needed was a guide to lead her through the untamed mountain wilderness to the site where her parents' plane had crashed so long ago. But the only guide Joelle could find was Luke Gevaudan, a magnetically attractive loner with the feral grace of a wolf and eyes that glittered with a savage intensity. She couldn't know that Luke was the stuff of legends, one of the last survivors of an ancient race of werewolves... a man whose passion she would not be able to resist--no matter how terrible the price.

Trained as an artist with a BFA in Illustration from the California College of Arts and Crafts, Susan Krinard became a writer in 1992 when a friend read a short story she'd written and suggested she try writing a romance novel. A long-time fan of science fiction and fantasy, Susan began reading romance -- and realized what she wanted to do was combine the two genres. Prince of Wolves, her first romance novel and one of the earliest to feature a werewolf hero, was the result. Within a year Susan had sold the manuscript to Bantam as part of a three-book contract, and the novel went on to make several bestseller lists.

Since then, she's written and published over fourteen paranormal and fantasy novels, and written stories for a number of anthologies, both fantasy and romance. Both the anthology Out of This World (which included Susan's "Kinsman") and the novel Lord of the Beasts appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List.

Susan makes her home in New Mexico, the "Land of Enchantment", with her husband Serge, their dogs Freya, Nahla and Cagney, and their cat Jefferson. In addition to writing, Susan's interests include music of almost every kind, old movies, reading, nature, baking, and collecting unique handmade jewelry and decorative crafts.

Absolutely, positively one of the BEST books I have read in years!

This book is a paranormal romance story of Joelle Randall and Luke Gevaudan. It is by far one of the most intriguing, well written romance books I have had the pleasure to discover in quite some time.

Joelle finds herself in a small town in Lovell, British Columbia. Ever since her parents went down in a plane crash 12 years ago, Joey continued to feel alone and forced herself into safe and stable relationships. Anything to avoid actually feeling for someone else.

Luke is a very strange character. The town responds to him with awe and caution. Residents warn Joey of his lure he has on single women who visit and tells her tales of how women disappear with him for a year and then leave without word.

Complete intrigued, Joey is forced to hold her chin up high and meet his games of dominance head on. Unlike all of the other women before her, she isn't easily subdued by his charm and powerful allure.

Unable to find a guide who will take her into the mountains, she becomes extremely desperate. It isn't until her friend Maggie points out that Luke might be her best and last resort to finding where her parents perished.

There is a strange and strong attraction between them. As always with destined characters, the thread of souls is hardly easy to reject. Luke does just that. He knows what will happen to Joey, what will happen to him if he mates with her. He does not wish to put either of them through that change, and becomes cold and implacable to their desires. Fighting her seductive attempts, she becomes frustrated and it is only a severe accident that leaves their bond open and vulnerable.

Reluctantly accepting her request and promising to lead her to a place that will provide closure, there are dangers that appear out of nowhere. Death threatens them and panic sets in as they realize the impact if they lost one another.

This book is by far one of the most outstanding romance novels I have read in quite some time. Although there is very little "action" or "fast paced adventure" in the first half (200 pages) of the book, the relationship progression does not disappoint. Usually, I would find myself suffering through a book that does not provide danger or adventure right away.

That is most certainly not the case with this story. I am now reading the second book from the "present time wolf series", Prince of Shadows and I am having to force myself to sit here and write this review when all I want to do is cop a squat and read read read!

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to actually READ instead of sift through an easy reading book. The sexual content is mild to moderately descriptive and the violence is moderate as well. I do not recommend this book to children. Mature adults only!

A MUST READ!

~happy reading!

This is a total romance story where we have two people who have a lot of fear but come together to eventually understand and appreciate love.

When I saw eventually I really mean it this book moves super slow. There is a lot of sexual tension and not much else for like 200+ pages. One downside about the book is you really do not get a lot of depth for their motives. I guess the author is trying to draw you into the story but honestly my eyes kind of glazed over for a bit. I have to also say that the way their relationship began really was a downer he wanted to use her she wanted to use him…it was wacky and not at all fun to read…depressing really.

The one thing I did find interesting in the story was the imagery. Throughout the story the bit of understanding we do get is through he wolf. It was interesting how the author uses the wolf to expose human nature meaning our pleasures and our fears (dominance and submission). While the characters are vague they are still interesting and it does all come together.

BUT the story is super slow and I think we could have easily cut out 150 pages hence the three stars.

2 1/2 -maybe 3 stars...while I appreciated the thoughtful descriptiveness that ran through this book I just found the whole thing overthought. There was WAY too much internal struggle going on with both main characters yet I still wanted more insight on Luke's take on it all. Half the time I found myself wondering if Luke was in wolf form or in human form...it was a decent read (albeit I had to force myself to finish it) and would've been much better imo if it just moved along a little faster and with a little more SPARK.

So slow and BORING! I think I'm giving up & I'm only on Ch. 5. The premiss is kind of stupid too. What, she's looking for the crash site from how many years ago? Good grief. Also, what the hell is she running from? In the overview, she's "running from her past", but I'm on to Ch. 5 & there's been no allusion to this whatsoever.

Joelle, has come to Lovell, Canada, a small town in the Rockies, to find her parents, whose plane crashed in the area years ago but they were never found. Joelle, made a promise to herself that no matter what she would find them so she goes to Lovell to find a guide since the one she originally hired skipped out on her. So when she first comes to Lovell, she bumps into, Luke, who stirs her blood like none other. Luke, is part of a race of werewolves, and has come down from his home in the mountains, to find a woman to warm his bed for the winter, and he picks Joelle, who is the first one to fight him on anything, and he becomes intrigued and drawn to her in a way that surprises himself, and he knows that he must have her, because she is his......I don't think I have ever read from this author until know, and since I just love shifter romances, this book just drew me and the cover is so incredibly sexy that I couldn't resist. I did enjoy the style of writing that Susan Krinard displays but its a bit more detailed and more intense and vivid, and I will admit there were moments throughout where I was totally drawn into it, however there were others where it was such a book to be content in. Overall it was a enjoyable story, one you read by the fire or out in the sunlight on a warm day, a story to be enjoyed but not one that will totally captivate you. Although I would recommend this author to anyone that is looking for an intense and enjoyable romance that will softly carry one away into the world Krinard creates.

Not my favorite start to a series, but mostly because I wasn't a fan of the hero. Joelle, the heroine was okay, a little clueless about what's going on in this town (and especially if she won't keep away from the hero). The Hero, Luke is something of a world class asshole. He's completely unconcerned with the heroine's feelings, he is way too alpha to the point of being bossy and domineering (and not in a sexy way). I found myself wishing Joelle would decide to leave the area and leave Luke to himself. Eh. I liked the world, the werewolves and some of the adventure...this would have been better of the hero had been just a bit more likeable.

I did not finish this book. The two main characters just didn’t do a thing for me. Others might really like them. For me the book was ponderously slow and I just couldn’t commit to 200 more pages of what amounted to teen angst. The descriptions of the town were quite good. And I admit I am wondering what happened in the story. The story just took way too long. I’m feeling very restless and needed something more to keep my attention. At another time in my life, I might have fallen in love with this book.

What a great spin on the Shapeshifter to Wolf idea. Luke is a mysterious threat to the town, they know to keep their distance, while Joelle is searching for a haunted piece of her past. They are drawn to each other for reasons neither understands. Following them on this dangerous, complicated journey is fascinating and I loved everything about their chemistry together. This one was read quickly because I simply could not put it down!

Stopped reading at page 173. I've read a couple of books by this author and they were so-so. The further I got into this one, I remembered why they were just so-so. She spends too much time on details that bog the reader down. Characters keep rehashing the same old thing instead of moving on with the story. I'll be hard pressed to try another of her books.

Another great read. Joelle has decided to stop running from her past and wants to start a new life in Canadian rookies. But she needs a guide to get to where she needs to go to make peace with her memories. Luke is everything a woman would want if he wasn't a werewlof. Can they put aside their differences aside or are they too alike and can never be.

This much loved book started my obsession with paranormal romances involving werewolves. It's not the best I've ever read, but it's a sentimental favorite. I've read it so many times I'm surprised the paperback is still intact.

I liked the idea but I really didn’t like either Luke or Joelle. They both hurt each other and I didn’t enjoy their story.

It's been sitting on my reader for a while at 35% and I'm DNF'ing it. They still hadn't got started on their trip into the wilderness and I've vowed to be more brutal about books I'm not enjoying.

This was a sweet, slow-burn with some "here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, DARN IT" moments (but there is heat), tormented soul (his), strong but hurting female MC. Loved their respect and compassion for one another's pain and the healing they do for and with one another. Loved her strength and determination to succeed at her initial goal and then with him. Loved Luke's story and family. That saved this from being a 3.5. The slow burn wasn't only about the romance, but the writing style. I love lengthy novels, but there were places where I needed a quicker pace, and skimmed through long internal monologues.

Overall this was a good book and a solid 4 stars. It's one of the better werewolf books I've read. I enjoyed the romance between Joelle and Luke and loved the wolves. My (minor) complaints are that there were noticeable typos or times where I had to reread sentences because a word or two was missing. There were also times too, where I had to reread scenes (in the middle to end of the book) because they were a little rushed. Pushing those aspects aside though, it was overall a fun, enjoyable read.

prince of wolves

This is my first book by this author. I began with an open mind and quickly picked up what the locals may be worried about regarding the main male character. As I read, it became hard to stay interested until about half way through. Even then, I read quickly and only slowed when the story needed some details to be read. Probably the biggest drawback for me was how Luke felt self centered and aloof. Plus I don’t like men taking advantage of females. I’m not sure I will read more from this author.

Different…

This story is a different take on shifters. Some of the characteristics were familiar, but some were different. What this book did though is to tell us the sweet story of Luke, a wolf shifter, falling in love with Joey, a human woman. It is a good story that gently leads us to a beautiful ending. Love it.

This was a nice read just toooo drawn out. You knew the story but to have it this long made me just want it to end, I will not be reading any more of this series as I feel just too much literature to wade thru.

Loved it

Great author, great writing. It's got action and really close family ties, very deep emotions. I don't usually go for shifter novels, but I read The Forest Lord, and I liked Ms. Krinard's writing style, so, here I am.

Boring

I didn’t find either main character likable. Perhaps if the book was much shorter, I would’ve tried to plod through it. I was too bored to finish the second half.

The first ? pages is all sexual tension and one-upmanship. So a little dull. Patient readers may get more out of this one.

Odd

He plays games. Uses things to the way he wants. Looks like he met someone who isn't willing to let him have his way.

Worst thing about this book is there is only one. It is in a series but it’s not continuous with the same characters.
