Meet Artist Johannes Vermeer! Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists series combines a delightful mix of full-color historical reproductions, photos, and hilarious cartoon-style illustrations that bring to life the works of renowned artists, combining poignant anecdotes with important factual information for readers (Ages 8-9).This book presents the life and work of the seventeenth-century Dutch painter, famous for creating realistic scenes of everyday life.
A brief overview of Vermeer and his work. Written to inspire kids with the work of the great artists. Unfortunately not a lot is really known about Vermeer, so the focus was also on the amazing artists working alongside him at the time. They also highlight the stillness in his art which I find one of its greatest qualities
While there are a number of titles in this biography series on famous artists, this title does an excellent presentation of Vermeer’s work, briefly explains what the Golden Art in the 1600s was in Holland, shows the types of paintings by other artists done prior to Vermeer beginning to paint everyday life scenes. Enjoyed seeing a photo of Vermeer’s “Officer and Laughing Girl”. Also names several other artists of the time beginning to paint everyday life. In general I am fascinated with life and culture of Holland in the 1600’s , the Goldn Age.
What a DELIGHTFUL book! Loved learning about the artist as well as many interesting tidbits about Holland....and the paintings are, of course, beautiful!
I have read most of Mike Venezia's books on the U.S. Presidents and was excited to see that he has a series on world famous artists as well. My daughter and I recently read a book about the art of Johannes Vermeer so I thought this would be a great edition to begin with. Very little is known about Vermeer, yet Mike Venezia did a wonderful job describing what is known and also a little about life in Holland during Vermeer's time.
