A friend mentioned they were rereading a childhood book so it made want to read my favourite childhood story (this copy was my moms and published in 1970!)… its been years since I’d even thought about it. It is also my favourite Disney animated film!
It’s a short children’s book which is beautifully written, whimsical and weirdly emotional (?) reflecting on childhood, relationships with mothers and just the idea of growing up. It was also interesting (and funny) to notice how different parts of the story are from the film. Despite its flaws (especially around the portrayal of Native Americans characters), I’ll always treasure this story.
A nostalgic reread that reminded me why it has stayed with me all these years.
“And he was not so sure as he had been that mothers were silly. This one seemed quite sensible somehow.”
“This shows that if you wait long enough, you will get whatever you have waited for. It never does to be too impatient.”

So fun and entertaining to read! A great book as an example of the Golden age of children's literature; it was written for the purpose of pleasure and enjoyment. It was also so cool to see what concepts and ideas Disney kept for the movie and what they did not. I also liked that even though it's an older book it kept my seven and five year old kids entertained.
Another quick read for the day. I REALLY love the illustrations in this book, they are all so beautiful. I think we all know the story of Peter Pan and Wendy, or at least Peter Pan himself. It is a childrensbook, however I did enjoy it myself:3
I read Peter and Wendy, the original novel by J.M. Barrie recently and I can’t help laughing. Yes, I’d heard of the weirder, darker aspects of the novel, but I admit I hoped they were exaggerated or out of context…or something. Even knowing about those, though…
I did not expect Peter and Wendy to have such a strong Lord of the Flies vibe!
Seriously. Peter Pan is just Lord of the Flies with fairies and pirates, even if it did come out forty years earlier.
I mean, both novels are about a group of boys on an island running amok, with no adult authority. (Being in the middle of a murder round robin with the pirates and natives doesn’t count as adult supervision, after all.)
I did like Peter and Wendy, but I’m almost fifty years old. It is not something I would read to a young child. lol
I should mention that Lord of Flies doesn’t have older females being cougars. Honestly, Wendy, Tinker Bell, and Tiger Lily are all pretty gross in the book. Like, Peter is a CHILD, knock it off, girls!
That said there is a weird, complex mythology to this book that never gets fully explored, but is very intriguing. Like, the idea that parents have seven days to reclaim their boys, before they become Lost Boys. Who do they make a claim to? The fairies? Questions like these are never answered. It's no wonder there are so many alternate takes on Peter Pan!
I do recommend this to anyone who has only seen the Disney cartoon, which I grew up with and have always loved. For those familiar with Once Upon a Time the tv series, that take on Peter Pan will make a lot more sense, after reading this book.
I feel like I've already read this before. Peter Pan and Wendy is about how Wendy, John, and Michael Darling met Peter Pan and went with him to Neverland. Peter Pan lives with the Lost Boys. In Peter Pan and Wendy, Peter Pan, the Lost Boys, Wendy, John, and Michael have many adventures together. They meet Indians and pirates. Peter Pan's nemesis is the pirate captain James Hook. Captain Hook lost his arm to a crocodile and has feared the crocodile ever since. Peter Pan was the one who caused him to lose his arm. There is much humor in Peter Pan and Wendy; many characters talk rudely to each other. Tinker Bell is always calling Peter a "silly ass." Tinker Bell is jealous of Wendy because Peter is interested in her; Tinker Bell convinces the Lost Boys to shoot Wendy out of the sky.
To die will be an awfully big adventure, says Peter Pan. The book has very particular appeal, hiding a subtle narrative; nostalgia of growing up, changing, parting way with friends, wishes, and dreams. And fear of forgetting (“Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting”). Five stars, though, go mostly to wonderful, almost alluring, illustrations of Anne Grahame Johnstone.
Just finished reading this aloud to Cate and Addie. Have never read it before. It is brilliant--written 100 years ago but still so fun to read for adults and children alike. Many of the words and phrases needed some explanation to my 4- and 7-year old daughters, but aside from that minor detail it is a must-read. Very different from the Disney version, and much, much better!
A lot of this book I remember from the Mary Martin and Cyril Richard version. I had a lot of fun recording the audio book on my Youtube channel, please visit Katie's Bookshelf Chapters - https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&...
