Rumiko Takahashi (高橋留美子) was born in Niigata, Japan. She is not only one of the richest women in Japan but also one of the top paid manga artists. She is also the most successful female comic artist in history. She has been writing manga non-stop for 31 years.

Rumiko Takahashi is one of the wealthiest women in Japan. The manga she creates (and its anime adaptations) are very popular in the United States and Europe where they have been released as both manga and anime in English translation. Her works are relatively famous worldwide, and many of her series were some of the forerunners of early English language manga to be released in the nineties. Takahashi is also the best selling female comics artist in history; well over 100 million copies of her various works have been sold.

Though she was said to occasionally doodle in the margins of her papers while attending Niigata Chūō High School, Takahashi's interest in manga did not come until later. During her college years, she enrolled in Gekiga Sonjuku, a manga school founded by Kazuo Koike, mangaka of Crying Freeman and Lone Wolf and Cub. Under his guidance Rumiko Takahashi began to publish her first doujinshi creations in 1975, such as Bye-Bye Road and Star of Futile Dust. Kozue Koike often urged his students to create well-thought out, interesting characters, and this influence would greatly impact Rumiko Takahashi's works throughout her career.

Career and major works:

Takahashi's professional career began in 1978. Her first published story was Those Selfish Aliens, a comedic science fiction story. During the same year, she published Time Warp Trouble, Shake Your Buddha, and the Golden Gods of Poverty in Shōnen Sunday, which would remain the home to most of her major works for the next twenty years. Later that year, Rumiko attempted her first full-length series, Urusei Yatsura. Though it had a rocky start due to publishing difficulties, Urusei Yatsura would become one of the most beloved anime and manga comedies in Japan.

In 1980, Rumiko Takahashi found her niche and began to publish with regularity. At this time she started her second major series, Maison Ikkoku, in Big Comic Spirits. Written for an older audience, Maison Ikkoku is often considered to be one of the all-time best romance manga. Takahashi managed to work on Maison Ikkoku on and off simultaneously with Urusei Yatsura. She concluded both series in 1987, with Urusei Yatsura ending at 34 volumes, and Maison Ikkoku being 15.

During the 1980s, Takahashi became a prolific writer of short story manga, which is surprising considering the massive lengths of most of her works. Her stories The Laughing Target, Maris the Chojo, and Fire Tripper all were adapted into original video animations (OVAs). In 1984, after the end of Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, Takahashi took a different approach to storytelling and began the dark, macabre Mermaid Saga. This series of short segments was published sporadically until 1994, with the final story being Mermaid's Mask. Many fans contend that this work remains unfinished by Takahashi, since the final story does not end on a conclusive note.

Another short work left untouched is One-Pound Gospel, which, like Mermaid Saga, was published erratically. The last story to be drawn was published in 2001, however just recently she wrote one final chapter concluding the series

Later in 1987, Takahashi began her third major series, Ranma ½. Following the late 80s and early 90s trend of shōnen martial arts manga, Ranma ½ features a gender-bending twist. The series continued for nearly a decade until 1996, when it ended at 38 volumes. Ranma ½ is one of Rumiko Takahashi's most popular series with the Western world.

During the later half of the 1990s, Rumiko Takahashi continued with short stories and her installments of Mermaid Saga and One-Pound Gospel until beginning her fourth major work, InuYasha. While Ran

Snore. Another not so exciting story-filler volume :-( Though I did laugh a lot during the noodle storyline with Shampoo and Cologne. Unfortunately, the rest were just meh. Grr...makes me mad.

There are seven stories in this particular volume of Ranma, and most of them are pretty good!

The first sees Ranma being attacked by a kid who's stealing girls' gym shorts at the high school. Everyone assumes it's Happosai, but then he shows up. The kid is the descendent of Rakkyosai, Happosai's training partner and friend a hundred years ago, and he's looking for the brocade butterfly. He easily handles Ranma (writing "dope" on his face in beautiful penmanship) and Happosai takes him on as his student. Ranma doesn't trust him, but can't hit a kid. Rakutaro is a pervert like Happosai, and likes to put himself in (female) Ranma and Akane's chests (at one point Soun steps in front of Akane, which is pretty cool, because he knows she can't hit a kid, and that means he otherwise trusts her to defend herself against Happosai. Or maybe he's just a wuss against his former master? Probably both?) Anyway, the fighting continues and Rakutaro finds the brocade butterfly, which he insists Happosai stole from his great grandfather - Happosai says it was gifted to him. Together they decide to use this amazing rainbow ink to get an imprint of Ranma's breasts. During this fight, Ranma and Rakutaro crash through the roof of an onsen and both transform - apparently Rakutaro is Rakkysosai, who fell into the spring of drowned child. Ranma lets them get the imprint of his chest, if it means they won't harass other people.

The next story is a really fun one... Ryoga finds his way home, and injures himself in a trap his parents set up around the house (?), so he sends his dog Checkers to send his traveling gifts to Akane, along with a letter that mentions - just a couple of times - how lonely he is. He's waiting for her to visit, but instead Akari shows up, because apparently they've been penpals and he outright calls her his girlfriend. Ranma and Akane show up, too, and Ryoga has thoughts of both of these chances to, well, it implies getting laid. Or maybe just make out a bit? IDK, Ryoga describes it "Ryoga Hibiki, 16 years old, will at long last seize the day!" But he can't let them know the other is here! So he puts them in different rooms of the house. Ranma is incredibly curious about Ryoga and Akari (usually watching intently whenever they come anywhere near kissing), and he decides to push things along by dressing up as a maid and advising Ryoga on what to do - sending him back and forth between the girls. At one points he tells Akari to spend the night there, so Ryoga comes back to find her in bedclothes, stating "forgive me for being forward, but I place myself in your hands". (Ranma tries to show Akane what's going on in the other room, but there's nothing to see.) The back-and-forth continues until Ryoga finally discovers both rooms are empty and the girls are chatting in the living room. It's a silly story that goes nowhere, but it's madcap and full of Ryoga-stress, which is always fun.

The following story is even more madcap: there's a legend at Furinkan high school about an umbrella of love - it's one of the umbrellas the school provides in case a student forgot theirs, and the legend states that any two people caught under it will fall in love. One day Akane is leaving and grabs the last umbrella after forgetting hers, and it says "LOVE" on it, just to make it clear. This leads to lots of violent shenanigans with everyone trying to get under the umbrella together. At one point Kuno and (male) Ranma end up together, and start waxing poetic about being great rivals and how they see themselves as brothers - but as soon as they're out, they're back to themselves again. Finally, after a drawn out fight, Ranma and Akane are together and he has the umbrella in hand. They both blush a lot, and he thinks that he should say something, until the rest of the school points out that the umbrella is broken, and there's nothing for them to stand under (Ranma's holding the broken handle/shaft). It's... kind of an adorable filler.

Then we have Akane and Miss Hinako determined to learn how to swim. They start out working together and then become rivals, and it ends with most of the water being splashed out of the pool and no one getting anywhere. Classic filler, but not un-fun.

Following this is another filler story, where Cologne orders a BUNCH of noodles that taste absolutely awful, so she develops an ad campaign in which she has one legendary ultimate noodle that gives the power of 100 men to the person who eats it, but it's randomly placed with the others - which are each sold by the bowl for 500 yen. The martial artists in town go crazy (especially Kuno) and Ranma pfffts at it until he realizes that if one of his rival eats it, they'll be stronger. Mousse decides to cook it himself and eat it without anyone knowing, but he said his plan out loud. Ranma gets the noodle, but Cologne knocks him out easily. Turns out it gives him the digestive power of 100 men, so he keeps eating the foul noodles.

Now comes one of my favorites stories about Akane and the Vengeful Spirit Doll. This was an OAV which was excellent, but isn't built upon the same recurring theme that Akane is both drawn to and frightened AF of scary stories. The Tendo and Saotome families are staying at an inn where there's a legend of a creepy doll (who sits in the main entrance). They say there's a soul trapped inside who will get even with any one who does something bad in front of her. Unfortunately, Ranma and Genma run by fighting and knock her over. Ranma tries to put her back in place (because he doesn't want to pay for her), and puts her in a stupid sumo stance. So the doll decides to get even. She possesses Akane's body, and finds various ways to attack Ranma - but he manages to dodge everything. So she asks him to take a walk with her. (Akane, meanwhile, is trapped in the doll and trying to move. She manages a bit, but then the possessed-Akane traps her for a while.) Possessed-Akane tries to seduce Ranma in order to get him to close his eyes. On the second attempt, she has a tree branch in hand and he grabs it from her and beats their spying family out of a nearby bush, saying that he's in training and doesn't have time for a dorky girl. (this angers doll-Akane, who has made it closer by this point) Possessed-Akane drags Ranma off, and he asks her what's going on - why is she acting a lot cuter and sexier? The doll-Akane appears and Ranma is distracted, so possessed-Akane takes off her clothes. Doll-Akane throws herself in front of Ranma's face so he doesn't see, and possessed-Akane says "That does it!" and just begins fighting him. Ranma gets away, and feels like the doll was trying to save him (noting that it even looks like Akane, as he wipes smudges of its face). Possessed-Akane catches up and attacks from above, and they go crashing over a waterfall. At this point, when Ranma yells at her for not worrying if she gets hurt, she yells back that she doesn't care, she's just borrowing this body anyway. He flips them over to protect her from the fall, and they land - and perhaps it was his kindness in doing so? IDK? - the possessed-Akane leaves and Akane is back in her body, crying. The family is watching, seeing Akane cry, and Soun says he knew Ranma would mess it up. As they're leaving, Akane realizes it was Ranma's fault, and the family is commenting on how they knew Akane wouldn't have put the moves on Ranma. He tells her he liked her the other way, and she thwaps him.

The last story, then, is a weird filler plot where some of the classmates get stuck on a tropical island, but the only girls are Akane, Ukyo, and Miss Hinako (and, well, Ranma). They discover that the food is poisoned (but the boys are eating it), and there are all sorts of weird shenanigans, and - let's be honest, Principal Kuno was involved and I was sleepy, so I don't really care to remember the rest. The principal had the vaccine and Ranma, Akane, and Ukyo were fighting to get it, and he drank it all, but they ended up in a hot spring where the heat makes the vaccine seep out of the principal's skin and get in the water to heal everyone. IDEK.

While having many small stories, what we see here is quite fun.

The constant appearances of miss Hinako are a sign of how fun she’s to write about. A teacher that is clearly not all there, but has, sort of, good intentions.

Some high jinx with Ryoga not being able to decide what girl he likes, and a magic umbrella that makes people fall in love? Interesting.

We have a funny story with a creepy possessed doll that makes an attempt of a thriller, that’s quickly forgotten since we have good ol’ cartoon humor mixed in.

Quite of a grab bag, but a fun grab bag this time round.

I tried explaining some of the weird shit going on in this series to my partner, and I can only describe his reaction as slightly disturbed and very very perplexed. Honestly, that is a very understandable reaction, especially when the visual I gave him was some pages from the chapter with the phoenix chick that kept burping inbetween attacking Ranma.

4.5 stars, rounded up to 5. Some of the chapters were better than the others, imo. Didn’t quite care for the chapters introducing the new character, Rakutaro/Lucky. But, this chapter also prominently featured Happy, who isn’t my fave character all. I did really like “The Umbrella of Love” and “The Doll of Vengeance.” There were several times I actually laughed out loud.

Part 5: Alone With Them Both: Ranma-chan dresses in disguise as a maid and has fun pushing Ryoga from Akari to Akane and back again. It gets quite funny.

In the 29th volume of Ranma 1/2, Ranma gets into all kinds of trouble from eating noodles that are so terrible that it feels like you just died to trying to get off an island full of love struck men.

This is easily one of the funniest volumes of Ranma 1/2 yet!
