3.5 Time to Meet the Lucky Lady Stars ⭐

From the blurb alone, I had to read this. Most of us a familiar with the shifter trope of fated mates. But what happens if you meet the one and you’re not attracted to them? I never thought of it either!

His beast yipped in excitement, but Reece groaned in disbelief. No fucking way. My mate’s a chubby?

Reece, our arrogant twat of a hero. Blessed with good genetics; disappointed is an understatement when he first lays eyes on his mate. Instead of some svelte leggy blonde, Teddy (Theodora) well she’s just average and plump like most of us mere mortals.

Teddy had no problem with one-night stands. When she chose them. But to allow a seduction by a man who’d blatantly admitted he didn’t find her attractive? That went beyond stupid into shameful.

Where many would have cowered over Reece’s blatant rejection, Teddy was all attitude. It had taken her years to accept that beauty came in many forms. And frankly Reece wasn’t the only one disappointed with fate’s choice.

These two met under hurtful circumstances, but once Teddy pulled his head out of his ass, he was quick to learn a few home truths. I really enjoyed this novella. It was steamy, witty and quite sweet. My issue is that it needed to be longer…. because we needed more pages filled with Reece’s groveling.

6% (10 paragraphs) into this story, I read this:

"No fucking way. My mate's a chubby?"

What. The. Fuck.

Not only does Eve Langlais have an obsession with calling average-weight women "overweight" and "chubby", but she seems to constantly make the character "heavy" for no reason. It doesn't further the story. It just gives the character something to be insecure and contrary about. I have enough body issues of my own - why the FUCK would I want to escape to a fantasy world where I get to read about somebody else bitching about how that hot guy can't possibly be attracted to her because she isn't a size 2? That is in no way appealing to me. I'd rather read a romance where the female character's WEIGHT isn't described, justified, pointed out, etc. Just say she's curvy and let the reader imagine just HOW curvy she may be. I'm really sick of this "chubby" shit, when the characters are average and their weight doesn't matter at all.

I agree, girls with curves rock and all. But dear god, write something else.

Edit: I made the horrible mistake of giving this a second shot. OMG. It gets so much worse. The guy calls the girl chubby... to her face. It was so rude, I literally yelped out loud and reread it to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. And this girl is sooo freaking bitter about her body, it's... what's the word? Tedious. And depressing. It's mentioned every other paragraph and both characters are warped in their thinking about weight and body image in general. I'm officially giving up on this author.

Reece couldn't believe the short, chubby woman looking up at him was his mate. Didn't fate know he liked his women tall and slim?

4.5 stars!

Thank you, Isabella, for bringing this book to my attention! After reading her review, I immediately bought this book and started reading, and I have to say that I was hooked from the very first page. Yes, Reece comes off as such an arrogant tool at first, but I loved seeing him all flustered over Teddy's apparent indifference towards him. Their chemistry was so palpable and steamy, and watching Reece make it up to Teddy (in more than ways than one) was so lovely. Overall, I loved this steamy novella! ♡

Tropes: rejected mates, playboy hero, curvy heroine, opposites-attract, fated mates, will they/won't they, no-strings attached, STEAMY🔥

His Teddy Bear by Eve Langlais

A fun and sexy shifter romance novella.
Neither Teddy nor Reece wanted a mate but fate has different plans.
Reece gets his first look at the curvy bear, and unthinking, speaks his dismay out loud. She’s not his usual preference. When Teddy storms out of the bar insulted, Reece follows. Because she sure smells good.

Entertaining, lots of sex, and love. Score!

Most books I have read by Eve have been on the witty and humors side. His Teddy Bear does have Eve’s witty writing and fun, but you find the heroine Teddy is very self-conscious about her weight and in finding love, so this added an emotional rollercoaster ride to the story. I was very happy to read this side of Eve.

What I liked most was the way Eve came about Teddy’s weight issue if you ever struggled with your weight you’ll know what Teddy is going through. But some of you may have a problem with the constant whining Teddy has about her weight. To me it made for a better emotional read because Reese has to real work to win Teddy’s love.

You’ll have to give this story a spin, to find out how Reese changes his mind for curvy women at least one in particular.

Tease
The lycan who’d only dared encroach on his territory took one look at Reece’s snarling face and blanched. “She’s all your, man. I don’t know she was taken.”

Reece could only growl at the man, who’d dared touch her, slunk away. He longed to chase after him and inflict damage, but that would mean leaving his fated mate alone to start more mischief.

This short paranormal romance was recommended to me because I was looking for a "fated-mate" story in which the mates weren't instantly attracted. It's probably as close as I'm going to get, since of course you have to have some kind of attraction to know someone's your fated mate, now that I come to think of it.

Shifters Teddy and Reece quickly recognize each other by smell, but both are initially aghast to see whom fate has paired them with. Reece, who loves tall thin women is appalled that his mate is short and chubby; Teddy, a bear shifter, had expected another bear, not a wolf. But her real issue is the look in Reece's eyes when he sees her: although she's worked hard to love her body and has found no lack of men who appreciate it, it's still very painful to find her fated mate is repulsed by her.

This was a cute, entertaining read. I liked that Teddy fights her attraction, refusing to be involved with a man who doesn't appreciate her. And I sympathized a lot with her sadness, although it irked me that her mate is her physical ideal, as well as the classic tall, broad-shouldered, thin man that almost all romance heroes are. It's considered great for romance heroes to appreciate a plain or large woman, but less conventionally attractive men don't get any love. And I didn't buy how conceited, arrogant Reece changed into the perfect loving mate so fast, and would like to have seen more growth.

Although labeled "erotic romance" this seemed fairly tame to me, other than the fact that it uses blunt language and both characters are sexually experienced and hop into the sack quickly. So a good read for those who prefer their erotic stories on the vanilla side.

This short story is surprisingly cute and sweet.

Langlais did a fine job of writing a heavier character who loves and values herself, but still struggles with the decades of social conditioning and ingrained hatred she's absorbed from others about her size. Shockingly, you never get over this, and anyone who claims to not understand it is being disingenuous. (Ask almost any girl or woman what's the worst thing that could happen to her and most will tell you it's getting fat. Yeah.) It chips at you and on weaker days when you feel vulnerable, those old wounds reopen. It's a constant battle to love yourself in a fat body. Especially the insecurities of pairing with a much taller and more idealized attractive man. It messes with your head and really does make you want to run and hide before you get a chance to be seriously hurt and undo everything you've fought so hard for. So Teddy is a highly sympathetic and relatable character for me. It's hard to know what size she actually is, but we do know that she's shorter and larger than all of the other women around her.

Yes, Reece is a total bag of dicks in the opening of this story. But. He reexamines his old feelings and challenges them and gets over them pretty quickly. That poor wolf is a glutton for punishment, but thank goodness, because a man who's willing to fight that battle on the regular and keep persisting is a gem.

Curvy woman need love too.

Eve Langlais does it again. His Teddy Bear is sweet and sensual to the core. All Teddy wants is to know that her mate loves her and not just feeling the mating frenzy. No wham-bam-thank-you-mam for her.

Teddy's a werebear and Reece's a werewolf. Both are caught unexpected when they find one another at a shifter mixer at some bar. Although each is not who the other thought they'd be fated with here they are. Reece proves to be quite a gentlemen as he courts Teddy and shows that he wants to stick around. Teddy is super sweet as she slowly lets her walls down. I thoroughly enjoyed the chase. Teddy gets spooked, she runs then Reece goes chasing. Let me say... I love all the wicked things Reece says and does. And I thoroughly love the cat and mouse games.

Teaser: "...might I say, your bear has a very naughty wiggle.”

All in all, this story is for the sizzling romance lovers who love a happy ending.

Basically the book can be summarized into a curvy woman fighting self esteem issues and a judgmental douchebag changing his views about curves.
Seriously. The heroine kept telling she was comfortable with her height and weight- yet every second she doubted and whined.
On the other hand, the hero calls her chubby and midget when they meet; and the book ends with him being in love with his "chubby teddy bear".
I love curvy heroines BUT I hate the self loathing and body shaming I get in these books. EGH.
Safe read

I did like this one. Yes, he was an ass in the beginning, but I do think that he made up or it and showed her in so many ways that he wanted her for more than just the mating call. Lots of push/pull, but it was understandable for her, but wish it didn't last as long. She was gone a week before he found her. Good read.

I really like Eve Langlais. Nothing about her stuff is polarized (good-bad, virgin-slut, hot-ugly) and that isn't all that common in romances. I didn't realize it (until I had read some of Langlais other stuff), but so many romances have very polar heroines in terms of their sexual experiences. These woman are either virgins, experienced from other long-term relationships (that hurt them, generally), or repentant sluts. Again and again Langlais presents us with women who are sexually aware and don't need to justify it, in fact, their sexuality is mostly used as a character descriptor rather than a plot builder.

An example of that using another element would be: Character descriptor: She grew up in a single parents household with her father v.s. Plot Builder: She grew up in a single parents household with her abusive father. With the latter we can assume that this will probably have a big impact on the character that affects the plot in some way. The former is just sort of a detail about the character.

I really really really likethat Langlais uses sexual experience/preference as a character detail. I can't think of any author that does this as well as Langlais and it really captures the people I know in life. Therefore, I'd argue it's a realistic portrayal of women in our society today. Yes she can be sexually active, yes she can enjoy it, no she might not be in a committed relationship, but none of this is a bad thing, it doesn't make her a slut, in fact it doesn't really matter at all.... now on with the story.

Ok, so praise of Langlais aside, let's get to what I didn't like about this story.

Teddy is fat...ter than other people she knows. I'm not sure how large she was but we know she is short and curvy having grown up with Amazonian-like women in her bear pack. She has always been different in a negative way, has been bullied for it and has only come to terms with herself and found self-love in adulthood.

Maybe it makes a difference that I'm not fat but I really walked away with a bad impression of Teddy and her fatness. At first it seemed all good, Teddy seemed comfortable in her skin and ready to defend her hotness but that all started to fall apart and Teddy's fears were all based around this element of herself that she can't change.

I don't know. I felt like telling her to shut up and work it. So she get this mate and she's worried that he will lose interest in her so she push him away. Ok fine, I sort of get that, but why did she never try to hold his interest? Not once. She didn't smack on a sexy bra or act especially flirty and sexy. I'm sitting here not knowing why he is still with her.

Let's face it, nothing comes to anyone without work and effort. This is true in all aspects of our lives including relationships. Our hero puts effort into winning the heroine's trust and love (?), but she just sits there all unhappy about the probablys and maybes of her life. She only puts effort in trying to get away from the relationship. Seems like a bit of a double standard that the man is bending over backwards to woo her and she does nothing, absolutely nothing, back. That's a bit of a bad message to the youth, isn't it?

I didn't see her as strong or confident. I saw her as a whiny cry baby who isn't willing to try for things she wants even when it seems like a lost cause.

To finish of this compliment sandwich of a review I want to end by giving Langlais kudos on the plot (major conflict) of this story. When I read it I just thought "Oh Man! That would totally happen to me". The premise here is that they are mates, they smell each other before they see each other, and when he sees her he's surprised (disappointed) that she isn't his physical type. How great is that? To be sexually drawn to someone but then still be a bit let down by who you end up with (at first) but then growing to appreciate them. I love that idea. I can't remember reading anything similar to that before.

So, because all of the good in this book I am rating it 4/5. I am disappointed with the weak heroine but I guess you win some you lose some. There is another Langlais book with a chunkier heroine who is amazing, it's wickedest witch and I'd recommend reading that after you read this one.

At a 'were' get together, Teddy finds her mate only to discover that he doesn't like what he sees. Her . Reece is an arrogant hottie with a thing for tall, modelesque blondes. Lo and behold his mate is anything but.

Now I hate the 'sniff, sniff, you're my mate' trope. To me that's now become synonymous with lazy writing, but Ms. Langlais takes that trope and makes it work by being creative and answering the question: What happens when your mate isn't someone you immediately like?

I liked Teddy and didn't feel like she was whining about her looks as much as she was terrified of being hurt because of all the hurt she had witnessed with her friends and family.

Reece was an arrogant ass with a heart of gold which is also a credit to the writer to make a hero who says...
No fucking way. My mate’s a chubby?
and still have him turn out to be likeable before the end of the story.

For a novella, this story totally worked. There was character development, conflict and resolution without seeming to be rushed. However, at less than 25K in word count according to ARe, I felt that $3.99 was a bit on the 'premium' side of the novella range. It's a good story but if it hadn't been for my credits, I probably wouldn't have tried it for that price.

While I've enjoyed all of Langlais's books that I've read, this one is my favorite so far. Reece starts out as a pretty shallow guy. He's initially shocked and turned off (mentally at least) by the short and curvy mate that fate has thrown at him... but when he answers the call of his inner wolf to claim her (which involves some hot fun in the forest), he realizes that he actually loves her voluptuous frame. Unfortunately for him, after his callous behavior his bear shifter mate, Teddy, skips town and heads home before they can be properly introduced. Eventually, he finds her again and has to spend pretty much the rest of the story convincing his Teddy bear that he's around for good.

Teddy was a great poster girl for women with curves - she embraced her looks and had good self-esteem. Her issues stemmed more from the fact that instances of infidelity were present in her family. She feared Reece's continued interest in her because of his less than enthusiastic reaction upon discovering they were fated-to-be-mated. Reece, however, does a great job at wooing his woman - it was really quite sweet (not too mention steamy)! Given that this book is set in the great Canadian north, I may have to book a trip to the NWT for the next Were-For-All to find a sexy shifter of my own :)

Reece didn't expect his mate at the latest shifter get together and when he smells her scent, he can't wait to meet her. With one look, Reece screws up with his mate. He is attracted to slim women and his mate is anything but. His bear doesn't care though and wants to claim his mate. Teddy doesn't want a mate who doesn't want her. After one breath taking claiming, Teddy runs figuring Reece wont come after, is she wrong?

I have been wanting to read this one for awhile and was thrilled with this story. Reece was a jerk at the beginning, both were strong willed people and had to walk back their initial assumptions. Great read.

I liked it! This was a very well written paranormal erotic romance novella with insta lust thanks to the natural mating urge between Teddy, a bear shifter and Reece, a wolf shifter. This story is not to be taken seriously, so just read it for fun.

Yes the heroine thinks she's chubby. Sigh. Her self image is mostly defined by the fact her slim sister's husband strayed - so why should a mate want a larger woman. Anyway... Our tall, handsome, muscled hero, (who thought he didn't like chubby), has a very immediate change of mind as soon as he sees Teddy. LOL. Be prepared for lots of steamy romance scenes, running, chasing and catching. 3.5 stars.

4.5 stars at least, what a cute, quirky short story. I loved when Reese call her "My Teddy Bear"; even though Teddy felt that he didn't want her in the beginning, he grown to love her; It was a short book but very sweet. At least this Plus Curve Girl, love her body. Bravo. Applauds to Ms. Langlais

Separate review for the Audible release of this story, which is one of my comfort reads.

Slightly lower star rating is for the narrator, who seemed rather put out to be reading this story and had very odd pronunciations and pauses for common words. It was off-putting and pulled me out of the story several times.

Totally loved this book. It's start with Reece finding his soul mate and realising she's not size 0 or higher then 5ft. He then has to show her how good it can be between them. Great story. Really funny and awesome HEA.

Marie Smith reads the audiobook and does a fine job.

This is a simple story of two fated mates meeting and NOT getting that joyful lust that you/they would expect. It was short but didn't need to be any longer.

Teddy sees his face and even though he doesn't say his crappy first impression out loud, his face says it all. She's chubby, she's short, she's not blond.
So she does what any self respecting girl has to do... and gives him the brush off!
Reece will spend the rest of the story pulling his head out of his arse and trying climb out of the hole he's dug. Not only has he ruined their first meeting, but she knows that not all fated mates are matches made in heaven. She fears that Reece will be like those other mated males that only desire their mate when she isn't pregnant and cat around the rest of the time. Although she has a history of being picked for her looks on when she was younger, I didn't find her to be one of those annoying heroines with low self-esteem.
I thought the author really did a good job riding that edge of her pushing him away but not too much or for too long. And him seeing and appreciating Teddy as he gets to know her over a couple weeks.

IMHO, he does love her and they will be a good match.
So I totally enjoyed this cute story about finding love where you don't expect to.

I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.

Teddy and Reece are two people who come from different backgrounds and different species. Fate, that crazy bitch, decided that it would makes sense to allow a bear, who has body issues, and a wolf, who thinks that he is hot shit, get together. Fate was right. Teddy and Recce, even though they come from different backgrounds ground one another. In a relationship you are supposed to learn from one another and that is what happens with these two.

Even though it start rough on both sides it did not take Reece as long to accept his relationship as it did with Teddy. I can understand her hesitation and her doubt about Reece but it was starting to get old. I am glad that Reece keep showing Teddy what she means to him and I am glad that she accepted it.

The only reason I am not giving this book a 5 is because of the way Reece reacted to Teddy in the beginning and the fact it took Teddy too long to see that Reece changed.

Awe cute book!
Being a "chubby" myself - I can relate to her insecurities. I grew up as a skinny girl with lots of spunk, but gained the weight with my first pregnancy. I feared so much that my husband would hate me afterwards - I spent months trying unsuccessfully to lose the weight - and yet, here we are 6 kids later and happily married for 15 years :)

HEA's do happen - even to those that don't think they deserve it.
This was a great read for me - I loved how strong Teddy is in this book - at first at the club she goes to with her sister and cousins. She has every intention of turning her mate down because he doesn't like what he sees - And she has excpeted herself as a beautiful person - curvey, yes, but beautiful - she isn't without admirors, so she doesn't want to settle for someone - mate or not - that doesn't see her for the beautiful girl she really is ...

But it goes deeper than that in this book.

Reece - what a guy, huh?? Lol He is a player - totally! He goes to the club expecting to get a quick and easy lay - *At six-feet-three, muscled, and with a face more handsome than Brad Pitt's according to the ladies, he ultimately decided who would grace his bed. * He could afford to be picky -

It wasn't until the * scent wafted in that roused his slumbering beast. *wolf shook itself awake in his mind and, with a mental yip, demanded Reece explore the newcomers* "Time to meet the lucky lady"

But when he spotted her, *he frowned and directed his attention back to the model type beauties, trying to pinpoint which of them was about to become the lucky one* But to his annoyance his eyes kept returning to the shorter woman with cropped hair bobbing among them.

Whatever his throughs on the matter, his wolf pulsed beneath his skin, it's excitement making fight for control.

Reece was doomed from the start.
When his eyes met Teddy's she couldn't help but see the disapointment in his eyes. She walked past him and left him standing there with his mouth hung opened..

It seems that Reece was in over his head though - but his wolf wouldn't except anything less than his mate.

As time goes on, Teddy keeps running away trying to save her heart from being broken, and Reece keeps running towards her trying to get her to understand that he is happy with the way she is.

Like I said before :) Great story - lots of steamy scenes and quirky humor :)

3/5 Hotness Rating

Reece had basically given up on finding his mate. If it hadn't happened by now he doubted that it ever would. Still, he went to the yearly Were-For-All mixer in his area. Not to find his mate mind you but to find some smokin' hot shifter sex. When he smelled the one that fate had chosen for him - though it took him by surprise - he couldn't believe he was nervous. She was, after all, just a woman. Still, anxious to meet his mate he followed the mouthwatering scent till he found who it belonged to. He expected to find the woman of his dreams but instead he found a chubby midget. Boy, had destiny screwed him over.

Teddy has a few issues. First and foremost was her size. She knows she's not as thin as the others in her pack. How could she not when the childhood memories of being teased and made fun of due to her size - both high and wide - continued to pop up? Those memories, coupled with the disgust in Reece's eyes when he first sees her, made her run from him.

His Teddy Bear has a different feel to it than the other Eve Langlais books that I've read. While it's still full of Eve's whit and charm, the writing takes on a more serious tone. I'm really happy to have seen this side of Eve's writing as it has touched me in a way that her other works have not. Actually, I couldn't have timed the reading of this novella better as I'm currently in the midst of a weight dilemma and reading Teddy and Reece's story gave me lots of warm fuzzies.

I've been overweight for most of my life and I was able to empathize easily with Teddy while reading this. While some may read this story and think that Teddy's insecurity is just her being a whine-ass, this was definitely not the case IMHO. Eve totally hit the nail on the head when it came to the feelings and bouncing thoughts that Teddy would be experiencing. I would be feeling the same exact way.

His Teddy Bear is a great story. The romance between Reece and Teddy was wonderful. It far surpassed their intense sexual bond. The emotions in this novella were so easily palpable that I even got misty-eyed at times.

Make sure you check out some of Eve Langlais's writing. It's mighty fine and she should be on your TBR list.

Description:Teddy, who is ironically enough a bear shifter, has finally found her mate. There’s one big problem though. He doesn’t like what he sees. Reece never imagined his chosen mate would be a woman with extra curves, but all it takes is one taste to realize the benefits and turn his world upside down.

Their arguments are many, their lust for each other fiery, but while he’s ready for the next step, Teddy keeps running. What will it take to win her trust and heart? And an even better question, will they ever make it to a bed?

Summary: While attending a Were Function where all weres hope to find their chosen mate is where the story of Teddy and Reece started. One whiff had Reece up and out of his chair and lead him to a group of women. However, Teddy wasn't the woman he was expecting, and she certainly wasn't his type. Teddy sees the look and decides to run from her chosen mate. He goes after her, helps her out of a bind, then mates her right then. But Teddy has other idea's and runs again, since she doesn't want a mate who obviously didn't appreciate her curves. What she didn't expect was him tracking her down, finding her, and trying to win her heart.
My thoughts: Eve Langlais wrote this short story well. I liked it myself. She brought out a curvy woman opposed to your regular svelte body ones. And she wouldn't bow to having a mate, even if it was destined, who wouldn't accept her for who she was. I have to say I love Teddy. She has spunk and though Reece at first made me mad I grew to like him. Once he got over his idea of what his ideal mate would look like, his wooing had me cheering for him. Their passion for each other was steamy and in the end it all came together for me.

As far as novellas go, I really liked His Teddy Bear. It was cute and it was fun and it was all just so entertaining!...I loved the heroine and could totally identify with her...I liked the hero too( in particular, all his convincing of the heroine, lol), though would have loved to get more of him...his background, as well as his point of view.

The story was a little short on plot...there is a main storyline, I just felt like with the limit on pages, it wasn't as delved into as it could have been...Everything moved too quickly for anything to be really satisfying....There's a lot of potential though! I would love to see Ms Lanlais' para folk/world exanded into a series with full length stories with a good deal of world building thrown in! As it is, i'm definitely looking forward to more Eve Langlais titles!

This was the cutest HOT story I think I have ever read. This was a quick read for me, because once I got started I just couldn't put it down. One would think, that by simply walking around a bar one night we could possible find our soul mate, and things would be so much easier, right? Well, not if your soul mate has put up wall and made themselves believe that no will ever love them. How does one go about proving them self? Well, NOT by calling that soul mate chunky . . yep guess what, there went another wall! Take a ride with Reece as he does his darn-est to prove to Teddy, what he offers is real.

This was a very enjoyable read. I look forward to reading more from Eve Langlais.

A very enjoyable, hot book of shifters.

Teddy, a chubby bear shifter meets her mate, Reece, a wolf shifter. Reece is stunned cause he is expecting a tall, slim wolf not a short, chubby bear. Things go downhill from there.

Reece becomes desperate to change Teddy's mind about him, as he has changed his about her.

A lovely story of a desperate male trying to convince his independent woman she is his.

I had so much fun reading this! The moment those arrogant words came out of Reece's mouth, I couldn't wait for Teddy to prove him wrong. I can't think of anything more sexy than cocky wolf being brought to his knees when he realizes his stupidty has bitten him in the ass! LOVED this story! Review to come.

The hero is a crude jerk who goes on and on how he can't be attracted to the heroine because she's so chunky. The hero pants after the hero like a dog in heat just because they're mates. Both these characters have no redeemable qualities and I grew angry while reading.

Major pass.
