This is a book where so much more is going on in the pictures than the words. If the book is read aloud, but your audience could not see the pictures, much would be lost in this story.
It also reminded me of a really crazy exam question that might show up on the California Bar Exam. It would ask about what crimes the robber committed. I am not sure breaking and entering would count, although he does technically break the window of the school.
Clearly much has changed in the world of picture books over the last 40 years as not one, but two bars are among the drawings. I liked that one was directly across from the church. And that there is a man entering it while it is still light outside.
I’ve had this book since I was a kid and have always loved it. Following the details of the pictures while reading the story is wonderful. Looking forward to sharing this with my students via virtual story time.
Wonderful story, great illustrations. A lot of things going on in the background, never told in the text, which make it all the more fun for small children who can point it out, and show their parents stuff they maybe havn't noticed. Can be read so many times... Five stars without a doubt. The best I've read from Jan Loof.
This is a short children's book that teaches a shop keeper a lesson about playing tricks for April Fools. The story was a quick read and follows a series of unfortunate events that unfold after a store keeper tricks one of his customers. The unfortunate events trickle down to the next person and eventually come full circle to the shop keeper after half the town feels the effects of the one innocent trick.
Humor!
Although there is a linear set of events just relating to the apple, there is an entire side plot involving a thief. Observant readers will see how the two plots will come together and result in the switching of the fake apple for the real apple as well as the man's cat being blamed for a bite being taken out of the now "ripe" apple.
Jan Lööf depicts a wonderful series of events caused by the prank of a fruitseller. Incongruous? Unbelievable? Don't worry: it all works out and makes sense in the end. And it's huge fun.
One of my all-time childhood favorites. A store-keeper plays a joke on a gentleman by selling him a fake apple, which gets left on the windowsill to ripen. Gets knocked off and goes on this whole journey around the neighborhood involving the local school children, a thief, a fender-bender, and a parrot.... Well, you'll have to read it for yourself!
"Who's Got the Apple" was one of my favorite books to read when I was little. I loved the story line throughout the book, following this apple as it traveled around town. It is so entertaining and the illustrations are fun. This book is great for younger children (4-6 years) who will love being able to watch as the apple goes from one place to the next.
This one can be hard to find...but I love it! It is about the day in the life of an apple on an adventure and all the people it comes across. It is also part mystery. And the pictures are fun because they tell the other stories that are going on too.
One of the best texts and graphics for children at the age of elementary school. It really attracts and focuses the attention of child. Without any direct mentioning it can prevent your child from telling lies. I strongly recommend it. (less)
