Megan Barrows has retired from a brief career as a ghostbusting psychic and now uses her sixth sense to fill her Seattle antiques store with objects with happy pasts. After once nearly having the soul sucked out of her by a malevolent spirit, she prefers a quiet life.
Case Lambert is a real estate prospector who restores old houses, then sells them for profit. He has just bought a dilapidated mansion so amazing that he wants to keep it for himself, but the house appears to be haunted. Seriously haunted. A few inquiries lead him to Megan Barrows.
Megan at first refuses to help, but Case is a master of persuasion. Moving into the mansion, they discover that one of the ghosts has a thing for Case -- and there may be even more amorous spirits inside this veritable paranormal vortex. But it soon becomes clear that no one -- dead or alive -- can stop Megan and Case from ending up in each other's arms. . . .
Lisa Cach grew up in a farm near Portland, Oregon, a place she loves although she'd always trying to leave it. Wanderlust has led her to sail the Sargasso Sea, teach English in Japan, and trek the leech-infested jungles of Borneo. She has degrees in both English and psychology, two subjects that were fun to learn about but that guaranteed her low-paying jobs. Her father, she admits, may have been right about the MBA.
Lisa started to writing romances in her parents' basement during snatched moments from work. Since her writing career began her free time has become less and less as her novels become more and more popular. She's loved romance novels since Junior High School, and at least now she doesn't have to worry about getting caught reading one. Lisa married, and bought with her husband a home in Seattle, Washington. She describes her personal paradise as "...a pile of books, a plate of brownies, and the free time in which to enjoy them".
This was a library book that I randomly grabbed after scanning over the first paragraph of the back blurbs. I thought it was a fiction series with a paranormal spin, but then my sister picked it up off my coffee table and said it was a romance. So I started to read this book not quite knowing what to expect. I was glad to find that it was more of what I had originally thought, a paranormal fiction book with a bit of side romance. I was actually a bit surprised by the authors ability to weave the ghost story. It was a lot more detailed and 'real' than expected. The characters were interesting and the way that they played off each other was entertaining and believable. I hope this is a series and not just a stand alone book, because I want more.
This is a fun, light paranormal read. The story takes place in Seattle where Megan Barrows an ex-paranormal investigator now runs Antique Fancies, an antique furniture store. After once nearly having the soul sucked out of her by a malevolent spirit, she prefers a quiet life. She is afraid of ghosts and afraid of the dark. Then Case Lambert comes into her life with a house full of ghosts, that he doesn't believe in but wants her to get rid of.
A good read - enjoyable - but the generator in the basement killed me - and would have killed all the characters not already dead in this book. A good editor should have caught this horrible error. I hope there aren’t any readers who read this book and decide to set up a generator in their own basement. It is a very bad and dangerous idea!
I liked the book, but because of the generator in the basement, I am giving it 2 stars.
This was a quick read. I'm not quite sure how to categorize it, because it felt kind of like a cross between a ghost- hunters show and a soap opera. At times it was funny, at times it was a bit over the top ghost-hunting paranormal, and then at times it got quite steamy. I think the ending felt a bit too much "Ghostbusters" movie for me, but overall, it was a fun read.
Well, let's say that it's an easy read. The story starts really promising and keeps a good pace. But all in all it feels like the plot has been originally planned as a much longer novel and has been edited down. Or in other words, 70 per cent into the book nothing really happens. And then in the last 10 per cent everything is squeezed in.
Story line started out a little interesting and then it wasn't. Lots of explicit sex scenes which are not my cup of tea, and turned the book into porn. I very rarely finish books I dislike this much, but I read it in a couple of hours.
quick, fun, light. would that we all found a soulmate, a beautiful old house and the friendly ghost of a dapper Victorian gentleman who fixed our coffee all at once
There was a lot I really liked about this novel, which neatly straddles dark urban fantasy and romance - flavorful writing with a great sense of space, a satisfyingly twisty supernatural mystery to untangle. On the minus side for me were the main characters' several asides asserting their allegiance to traditional gender roles.
Growing up in a decrepit old house that depressed his mother, the hero vowed to never allow his family to experience living in a work zone. When he first sees the mansion, he falls in love with it instantly. He knows this will be the house he'll bring a wife home to, raise his father and grow old in. It's cheap- a major fixer-upper. But it's perfect. But it's also haunted. Not that he believes in all that woo woo nonsense but a man can hardly ignore having an invisible entity climb into bed with him at night. Or the faulty wiring in the house that no one can find the solution to. So, he's brought in a man of science, a researcher to try to find out what's really going on.
The problem is, he also needs a medium. That where the heroine comes in. When she first hears that her old flame is needing her help at a bonafede haunted house, she adamant in her refusal. Last time the stupid man ignored her wishes and she ended up with a demon inside of her, the thing eventually killing her mom. But she's also attracted to the hero. She, unlike her selfish ex, actually feels the need to help people. So she agrees to stay that the house and prove to him that not only do ghosts exist, she'll also get rid of them for him. In return, she'll be able to take priceless antiques for her shop.
From the second she steps on the property she's hit with a very heavy pressure. The house is full of depression, anger, jealousy and all together possessing a very unhappy vibe. She sees black masses around corners, they hear slamming doors and footsteps. The hero is actually attacked, an icy hand squeezing his heart until he almost passes out. They slowly uncover the mystery of who haunts the beautiful house and work at purging them.
This book was horribly boring and rather lifeless in the romance department. The hero very unromantically really only thinks about when he can get into the heroine pants. The heroine herself is a tease, waiting on baited breath for him to make a move but when he finally does, she pushes him away. In fact, most of the book was them wandering the house encountering ghosts and memories of the trauma that took place in the past. I can't find myself excited or even the least be invested in the characters development and honestly was just waiting for it to be over. There were parts that scared me, at least in the beginning and I felt a glimmer of hope for a higher rating but it quickly fizzled.
Be forewarned: The book has pornographic scenes in it.
Most of the book was quite good, but when it came to the climax of the story, the author dropped the ball. It went from interesting believable romance and interesting believable interaction and interesting almost-believable ghost hunting to bad romance and a confrontation with ghosts that appeared to be written for a Hollywood movie script. The main character gets laid and suddenly she's overlooking major deal breakers in her relationship because IT'S LOVE. Her new lover still doesn't believe she's a real psychic, okay. She's afraid he going to beat another man nearly to death for touching her, drag him out and throw him in a crevice, that's okay, it was the ghosts. Her lover and the other man decided to rappel down into this crevice and look for human remains, that's okay, she's going to lie under a tree outside and relax. Her lover brings her the man's watch from off his skeleton and tells her I'm your new landlord, I secretly bought the building out from under you that you and your mother scrimped and saved and sacrificed for years and years and was your life's dream and I'm going to make changes you're not going to like, well, that's okay, too, because IT'S LOVE. So let's hump like bunnies and get married. The main character seems have totally ditched her personality and become a passive doormat. NOT OKAY.

by Lisa Cach is a story of old houses, trapped spirits and new beginnings. It was fun in places. Case bought a huge old house and wanted to fix it up but strange things were happening there. He took the advice of a local ghost hunter, Eric and enlisted the help of psychic, Megan, with whom Eric was smitten but spurned.
Case didn't make the best first impression when he walked into Megan's antique shop but he managed to convince her to work with Eric on ridding his house of spirits. When Megan first entered the house, she had an immediate feeling of being trapped there. She toured the house admiring the fine furniture and made a deal with Case. She'd help and if she was able to rid the house of the spirits, she could choose fourteen pieces of his antique furniture. Case went along with it since he only half believed in spirits and psychics. Eric manned the technical equipment, set up cameras, even at times in places he shouldn't have.
The spirits were in a tangle. Three spirits seemed trapped in the house but it took time for them to unravel the puzzle of who they were and why they didn't, wouldn't or couldn't leave. Over this time Megan falls for Case but they have a hard time getting together with Eric also in the house.
I read this in 2007. My journal entry from Bookcrossing:
I really enjoyed this read. Personally, I think this was more of a paranormal romantic suspense than a contemporary romance, as the romance actually takes a backseat to the ghost story. And what a ghost story it was! Much heavier than I was expecting, that's for sure. I found myself getting a little spooked while reading this at night all alone! LOL I think it would have been great, though, if at the end of the book Zachariah had escorted Megan down the aisle.
I thought it was weird that more wasn't said about the motto. They translated it (loosely) and discussed it later, but once they figured out what happened and cleaned the house of the ghosts, it was never mentioned again.
By the way, I Googled it and what I found says that Ingenio experior funera digna meo translates directly to "I suffer ruin worthy of mine own invention." I think their new motto should be Cum larvis non luctandum. ("One must not struggle with ghosts.") HA HA HA! :)
I really liked it until it got to the sex scenes. Then it went downhill...
It has a character buying an haunted house where he gets involved with a ghost, which is interesting, but once it descended into borderline porn I started skipping any scenes which involved the "couple". Personally I believe the story would have been greatly improved by the addition of more investigation and subtraction of personal attraction.
For being a paranormal romance novel, there was a lot more ghost activity than romance for most of this book. I'm glad it was, as the romance seemed strained and definitely on the corny side. It was spooky, and I regretted reading it at night several times. An entertaining story, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it. If I wanted something along these lines, I'd read a paranormal mystery and probably be much more satisfied.
Fun and lighthearted paranormal! There really isn't much in the romance department. Megan and Case seem like an unlikely couple. They are brought together under unusual circumstances. Megan must use her psychic gift to help Case get rid of some spirits in an old house he has bought. Things are sure to get crazy before they get better.
It took me a bit to get into this book, but once I did, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. it was more paranormal than romance, and I enjoyed the paranormal story very much. I did skim through the more romantic parts, as they seemed cheesy and not as well thought out as the ghost story. Overall, a quick but pleasant read.
A Babe in Ghostland is a fun little haunted house romance. There’s nothing I particularly loved or hated about this book. The characters and the romance were adequate. The plot moved along fast enough to hold my interest. If you are looking for a lighter paranormal romance you may like this.
A delightful book by a new author for me. It has the paranormal aspects to it and romance as well and is quite funny. It was a cute fun read and a nice break from the normal books that i've been reading. I would read more from this author in the future.
