H. Paul Jeffers was an established military historian and author of seventy books. He worked as an editor and producer at ABC, CBS and NBC, and is the only person to have been news director of both of New York City's all-news radio stations. He taught journalism at New York University, Syracuse University, and Boston University.
I enjoyed the subject but not the writing style. I agree with others, it is like reading the same chapter 25 times. However, reading the lassi rags to riches story was motivating. And the style he used as a self-promotion technique- he understood the value of a brand.
I read this book for a book club and had to force myself to read it to the end. Sometimes this read less like a biography than as a historical text on business and business operations during this time period. The chapters often tended to come across as stand-alone essays, since information was repeated from one chapter to the next.
This book was of particular interest to me. One of Jim Brady's gifts to an unknown client, a tandem bicycle covered in Mother of pearl, brass scroll work and painted in black glass, is located at the bicycle museum in Davis, California. I helped recover this machine more than 20 years ago and did a news piece for the local television station.
Really interesting and fun read! A large life spent in the Big Apple as it came into its own in the latter part of the 19th Century! Also a fascination architectural walk down memory lane as far as Manhattan goes. Absolutely LOVED this book!
I knew almost nothing about Diamond Jim before I read the book, mostly the name. This is an incredible book. I learned alot not only of the man but the age he lived in, incredible person. Highly recommended
