About the author

Joann Sfar (born August 28, 1971 in Nice) is a French comics artist, comic book creator, and film director.

Sfar is considered one of the most important artists of the new wave of Franco-Belgian comics. Many of his comics were published by L'Association which was founded in 1990 by Jean-Christophe Menu and six other artists. He also worked together with many of the new movement's main artists, e.g. David B. and Lewis Trondheim. The Donjon series which he created with Trondheim has a cult following in many countries.

Some of his comics are inspired by his Jewish heritage as the son of Jewish parents (an Ashkenazi mother and a Sephardic father). He himself says that there is Ashkenazi humor in his Professeur Bell series (loosely based on Joseph Bell), whereas Le chat du rabbin is clearly inspired by his Sephardic side. Les olives noires is a series about a Jewish child in Israel at the time of Jesus. Like Le chat du rabbin, the series contains a lot of historical and theological information.

His main influences are Fred and André Franquin as well as Marc Chagall, Chaim Soutine, Will Eisner, Hugo Pratt and John Buscema.

From 2009 to 2010, Sfar wrote and directed 'Serge Gainsbourgh: Une Vie Heroique', a biopic of the notorious French songwriter, of whom Sfar is a self-confessed fanatic. The film, which draws substantially on Sfar's abilities as a comic book artist through its extensive use of fantasy artwork, animation and puppetry, was released in 2010 to general critical acclaim.

Le style très mec boomer que j'avais relevé dans le tome précédent (l'armée du crâne) prend ici pleinement ancrage dans cette histoire bien ancrée dans le sexisme ordinaire. Aucune mauvaise intention des auteurs, je n'en doute pas, mais propre à faire hausser les sourcils et soupirer quand on est habitué.e.s à voir ce genre de conneries partout. En dehors de ça, l'histoire de ce jeune euh ... oiseau ... justicier est assez drôle et prenante. Le voir essayer de naviguer dans cette méchante société le plus honnêtement possible, se faire des amis tout le long, ça donne envie de connaître la suite de son histoire.

Une tour grise visible à trois heures de marche où les courants d’air empêchent les rats d’indisposer les cafards. C’est la maison de mon père.

Ma période préférée du Donjon est incontestablement le Zénith. Mais pour vraiment l’apprécier, il est indispensable d’en connaître la genèse et les premiers pas de celui qui en deviendra le puissant gardien, Hyacinthe de Cavallère. Du gamin de la campagne un peu perdu qu’il est au début, on le voit au fil de ces trois premiers tomes prendre de l’assurance et peu à peu s’affirmer. Les rencontres qu’il fait forgent son caractère et son premier acte fondateur en tant que gardien est réalisé lorsqu’il s’attache les services de ses premiers employés, les terribles brous. La lecture de ces trois premiers tomes nous apprendrons bien d’autres choses que je ne vais pas révéler ici.

Ces tomes, en plus de reprendre le canon du récit d’apprentissage du provincial qui arrive à la ville pour devenir quelqu’un, ont tout de l’aventure de cape et d’épée pimentée par la mystérieuse et dangereuse Alexandra.

Enfin un mot sur les dessins de ces trois premiers tomes publiés au début des années 2000. Il sont réalisés par le talentueux Christophe Blain dont le trait se prête parfaitement à cette ambiance. Vous l’aurez compris, il s’agit d’un incontournable du Donjon qu’il faut lire absolument.

Drugačije, ali opet, također genijalno. Praskozorje prati pustolovine mladog Hijacinta, gdje on silom prilika postaje osvetnik, borac protiv nepravde i zločina u mračnom Antipolisu. A njegovi najveći neprijatelji skrivaju se najčešće u njegovoj blizini. Ovo je priča o njegovoj beznadnoj zaljubljenosti u mladu ubojicu Aleksandru i njegovoj upornosti i dobrodušnosti naspram svih živih bića. Ovo je priča o Noćnoj košulji! Ovo nije ni fantasy ni SF, ovo je više poput humorističke verzije Dumasovog svijeta Tri mušketira...

První díl prequelové řady, převážně se odehrávající v lehce ankhmorporkoidním městě. Působilo to na mne trochu jinak než ostatní donžony, což je asi dáno jinou kresbou a letteringem - a možná i trochu míň uhozeným příběhem. Teda, ne že by to byl jiný žánr nebo horší, ale komické zážitky mladého, odvážně pitomého klaďase ve zkorumpovaném městě jsou prosté trošku jiná věc než třeba hubení miliónů skřetů pírkem a houbičkama, co rostou mezi prsty.

- Já jsem spravedlnost. - To má být jako jméno? - Ne, to je koncept. A on to koncept vskutku je; koncept toho v co se Donžon časem promění. Tedy ve vlajkovou loď cynického černého parodického humoru. Akorát v této sérii "věku prvního Donžonu" to prostě tak nějak ještě není ono, byť tento díl (označený -99) tohoto cyklu je sám o sobě ještě více než zdařilý.
