Alright, hear me out.

I didn't like this book because there was so much going on and I clearly needed the first 4 books to understand it.

Was I still interested? Yes.

Did I have any idea what was going on? No.

So, this will be a low score for me because I couldn't enjoy it on it's own. It'll be quite the hunt to find the first four books, but I'll try. Maybe I'll come back to it one day...

There's just too much that confused me. The idea behind the book is so incredibly cool, but it was hard to read. I needed too much background that wasn't there.

Two out of five stars.

I'm so pleased I decided to get this six book romance/dystopian/action/adventure/suspense series in audiobooks and I'm loving the narrator's performance. So five stars for him, as he really is doing a great job of acting out all the character's parts. It's stand alone re this particular couple and their romance, but their meeting and romance is buried in one larger back-story, and you need to read these six books in order to understand it and let the tension and events unravel as time progresses. There are steamy romance scenes and quite a lot of characters from previous books that make an appearance, and their stories continue as well.

Note - Joss Ware aka Colleen Gleason.

Loose synopsis of this series without spoilers:- 50 years ago an elite group of men and women , (aka the strangers/the elites/very rich people), manage to deliberately destroy the world as we know it and Las Vegas, (Envy/New Vegas), is now on the edge of the sea. These people have special crystals implanted in their bodies that give them immortality - or longer life, anyway. They have created a race of killer zombies to track someone that has fled from them. Everything is tied into the country of Atlantis. Several men were trapped in caves nearby during the extermination event, and somehow they have slept through these 50 years - or time travelled. They emerge from the caves to discover the young descendants of the few people who survived, trying to live out their lives as best as they can. These men have discovered each has special powers. So now they have to discover what has happened and how to rid this new world of the 'elites', and try to get everything back to normal.

What I especially love is the narrator's Zombie moaning...LOL. 4.5 stars for this installment, which involves the sea, imbedded crystals, a hero with a fear of the water and a scarred heroine who loves the water. So much fun to listen to.

It's been 50 years since a near-Apocalypse changed the world forever. Power hungry men and the rulers of Atlantis orchestrated the Change, each for their own ends. Now a small band of survivors, the Resistance, is trying to rebuild and stop their ongoing schemes.

Fence is part of the Resistance. But he is different than most because he actually lived in the time before the change and was in some kind of stasis, not aging for half a century. He lost everyone he ever loved, but he is readjusting to his new life in his new surroundings.

Ana is a descendant of Atlantis. She wants nothing to do with her mother's people, for she knows the brutality they are capable of. Their one gift to her was in implanting the crystals into her body that allow her to breathe underwater. It's beneath the surface of the sea she feels whole, unencumbered by the effects of a leg ravaged by injury. It's ironic that she would come to fall for a man who is utterly terrified of water.

When Fence and Ana meet, there is a fast attraction, but there are roadblocks. Ana fears getting close to any man, because she doesn't want anyone to see her crystals. And Fence is the kind of guy who prefers a bit of fun to real romance. He's a smooth operator, a ladies man, and no one is more surprised than him when he begins falling for Ana.

I liked the love story well enough. A cocky player isn't my favorite kind of hero, but Fence is charming enough. Ana's story isn't shocking, but as we learn more about her secrets, it peels back more of the layers in the world-building surrounding the Change.

I have to say that the series has a very different feel than it did in the early books, where the zombie-like gangas were featured so prominently. In this book, the zombies barely exist and it's all about the Atlantians as the nemesis in the story. It's less about a constant physical threat and more about the machinations of these powerful beings. I miss the zombies. They were cool. Everything is growing more and more complicated and I wish I would have reread the earlier books before I started reading this one. Most of it came back to me, but it took a little time. I wonder how easy it would be for a new reader to follow at this point.

Though the lion's share of the story follows Fence and Ana, we do see some familiar faces, like Quent, Zoe and Elliott. And we get some very, very short scenes with Wyatt and Remy. I guess we're being set up for a love story between these two, which bums me out. I was really hoping for a redemption story for Ian with Remy... and frankly, I'm not ready for Wyatt to get over his wife and kids, but I am getting ahead of myself.

I liked it. I appreciated having a physically imperfect heroine. There's some pretty good banter and a couple of love scenes to heat things up. But I wish we could have had more time for a relationship to develop between these two before they starting throwing around the L-word. It was only a week! Come on!!

I'm hoping the next installment goes back a little more to the gritty side I know this series has to offer. More zombies and bounty hunters, less crystals and swimming with the dolphins.

OK so Joss Ware has changed my mind. I've never picked up a apocalyptic book but I have to say that she made me like this genre. I tend to think of I am Legend when thinking of apocalyptic stories. So this is my first book in the Envy Chronicles that I have read, but after reading this book I'm on too book One. "Fence took a healthy gulp of beer. That was, at least, one thing that hadn’t disappeared since the Change. Man hadn’t forgotten the important things in life." My girls would love this lol
Ok can you imagine a world like this "And by “number,” Elliott meant room number. No one had phones anymore, or even email, and definitely not Facebook." I can do with the Facebook, but emails really. I pray that there's books, or I'll go stir crazy.

In this book we see that the world is overpopulated by Zombies and the western part of the USA is GONE. And get this there's Merfolks ( I love Merpeople sorry) 50 years into the future we meet Fence and a couple of other guys who were trapped in the Sedona cave, they’d somehow time-traveled or slept through fifty years without aging. And if you ask me that's cool. Some of the men came out of the cave with special abilities Fence not being one of them but he still kicked major ass. Loved how Fence and Ana were good for each other. They were like a puzzle that fit so well together. Ana was a cool heroine and I really liked her and her ability(being able to breathe under water)she wasn't a dismal in distress, so in my book she was also kick ass.

I'm really excited to start this series from the beginning and continuing when the next book comes out. I would recommend this book/series to anyone looking for a little twist to paranormal romance and a kick ass story.

I’d forgotten how much I enjoy this series. This one features a heroine who has a physical disability, and a hero with an emotional one (phobia/PTSD) — very interesting combination to say the least, especially when the combination of the two makes their relationship seem almost impossible from the beginning.

And of course, the overall story arc with the Elite, Atlanteans, the zombies, and Envy all continue towards their conclusion, which was pleasing to me as a fan of the series in general. As this is book 5 in the series, I wouldn’t really recommend it as a jumping-off point to newcomers, though I have to admit, Ms. Ware did a fantastic job of giving relevant backstory up to this point without ever feeling as though it were out of place or a case of “info-dump”.

This fifth entry in the Envy Chronicles, Night Forbidden is loaded with excitement, adventure and revealing moments.

For a brief second there I thought the author was going to play Ana off as a mermaid! Nope, she's half human and the other half... Yeah not spoiling it. Needless to say, it made for a interesting twist to the story. Especially when you factor in Fence. To be quite honest, in the past titles in the series I gave little, if any, attention to his character. He was just a MEH filler character in the story to me. I take back everything I had to say about him. He's funny, witty and deserves more than a MEH from me. Him and Ana made a great match, and the dynamics between them made for good reading.

Each one of the men who came out of the Sedona cave fifty years later now have a a strange new ability. It's pretty much spelled out in the blurb. What isn't mentioned, is how much of a wicked sense of humor the author  has because the best word I can use to describe his abilities is IRONIC! I'm not going into details of Fence's, however I will say this - Ms. Gleason, you are so bad! LOL!!!

I can see this series coming to an end very quickly and for that I will be very sad. I have thoroughly enjoyed every book. As each survivor finds a reason to go on, discovering their abilities, and the next piece of the puzzle falls into place. I feel an epic ending is in store for all. If more apocalyptic series were written like the Envy Chronicles I might find myself switching preferred genres. This is a must read series!

I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

Did anyone tell the cover artist that the hero of this novel is African-American? Or was the publisher worried that that an accurate picture might scare away prospective readers? While I have enjoyed this series in a guilty pleasure sort of way, I thought the portrayal of the one African American hero as an oversexed joker was just a teensy bit racist, although perhaps I am too sensitive. Apparently the next book is the last in the series (for now at least) so hopefully it will end on a strong note.

This wasn't my favorite of the series. I had a hard time relating to the romance as I just didn't really care for the leading male, Fence. I hated his he can have any woman he wants attitude and his lame cheesy sexual innuendos. He does get better by the end of the book, but he still was mediocre for me as a love interest.

But we got glimpses of Zoë and Quent and Remy and Wyatt which I loved!

Fence's "humor" was so awful that I could barely get through this. His sexual innuendo was just dumb, crass and offensive. Horrible jokes and every come on made me want to roll my eyes. Ugh. Did not really like Ana either. Second book in the series that was crap. Hopefully the next one (last) is better.

Loved the Atlantis aspect, so many new things were learned. However once again the romance was lacking. As an Urban Fantasy or Distopia these books are good, as romance they just need something else. I think the "Alphas" of this series are just not very good.

I have ALL the mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, yay representation: we have a Black male lead (Fence) and a female lead with a disability (Ana). Also, our male lead has a phobia he needs to contend with. So... yay for diversity and inclusion?

On the other, Fence mostly feels more like a caricature of 'the hypersexual Black man' than like an actualfax 3D character, several of his interactions just left me feeling deeply uncomfortable, and Ana was just... not a likeable character generally. And FFS, I wish Ms Ware's characters would just TALK to each other like grown ass adults instead of creating unnecessary, eye-rolling drama for the sake of drama.

On the other other though, I did like that we're finding out more about the Atlanteans, the Elite, how the Change happened, and developing the overall series arc. I also like that .

So all up, while this book definitely wasn't a favourite read, and contained WAY too many cringey moments in it for me to describe it as enjoyable in and of itself, it did move the series arc plot forward enough that I don't actively regret reading it.

That said, I'm glad the next book is the series finale: I want to find out how the series wraps up, but I'm not sure I'd have the patience for yet another book after the next one. (Well, not unless the writing improves massively over the next book anyway!)

MinnChica: The Envy Chronicles has got to be my all-time favorite post-apocalyptic romance series. From the first time I cracked open Beyond the Night I’ve been hooked on the world that Ware created, and the characters that are living through it. I have to admit that I was a little bummed this story wasn’t about Wyatt and Remy, but Fence and Ana were such great characters, they more than made up for it!

Has: I think this series for me gets better and better and I totally agree with the sentiment that is my favourite post-apocalyptic romance series. Although the main plot didn’t bring forward the ongoing mystery threads that much from the previous books, I really enjoyed this instalment, especially with the romance with Fence and Ana, which was very tender and sweet. Although it wasn’t as angsty as the previous books, it did explore issues like disability both mental and physical.

Ana has a permanently injured leg after escaping the Atlantean city nearly a decade ago, although this doesn’t hold her back, and I liked how that played against with Fence’s fear of the water. Especially since Ana who has Atlantean abilities that allows her to survive to breath in the water due to her crystals. They both had fears and secrets but it didn’t make the romance overangsty or forced which I really liked. But I really loved their interactions with each especially, Fence’s sweet-talking ways which was very cute and fun. I wished more heroes in romance shared his type of humour, because for me this made their story refreshing.

MinnChica: I really loved the romance between these two. I felt as if it might be the best romance book in the series. Ana has her own doubts and insecurities about her injured leg, and because of it, I think she doesn’t always give people the chance to see the real her. But with Fence, she really let him in and gave him the chance to know her – all of her – despite her injuries. And Fence was such a great hero. Although he had many secrets of his own, his humor and southern charm made him one of those romance heroes that can melt any heroine and reader within moments of stepping onto the page. All their interactions together were wonderful. From the playful teasing to the dirty sexy talk to the more intimate moments of just being next to each other. Ware definitely outdid herself in the romance department with this one.

Has: Oh that love scene *fans self* the dialogue really really made it sizzle! I also loved the glimpses we saw of Quent and Zoe which the long awaited secret comes out which was another favourite scene.

And the introduction of the Atlanteans was really interesting because they looked like they were a different faction and how that tied in with the Elites and the cult, which will definitely a play a larger role in future books. And I wont spoil who also appeared in the book as a surprising twist but that made me a very happy bunny and has whetted my appetite for the next book as how this pans out.

MinnChica: I too loved the introduction to the Atlantis people. For me, if the first four books in this series Ware has been answering questions about the world and how it came to be left and right. It helped make the series seem like it was pacing quickly with questions being answered one after another. Although this book doesn’t do that, I felt that it was just as quick with the overall world pacing as the others. Only this time, Ware seems to create more questions than she answers. With the introduction and explanation of the different kinds of crystals, Ware has given us a further insight into the possible futures. We get to see how deeply Remy will impact the future of the world, and how the guys and their lady loves are all going to play an integral role in the fight against the Atlanteans and Elite humans. I, for one, am so so so excited to see where the series goes next, what happens, and whether Ware will answer more questions, or create more!

Has: I totally agree! And I think this book really cements the world-building and the mythology and ties it with action and great romance. I loved that there is characters who are shades of grey and leave you wondering about their motives as well as what is the final endgame of the Elites. And with the introduction of the Atlanteans whose own motives look as dangerous as the Elites – the next couple of books are going to be very promising.

Night Forbidden, for me was a fun and sexy romance with a charming and humorous hero and likeable and determined heroine who is so well fleshed out. Their romance was definitely enjoyable, and memorable, and I am eagerly awaiting for the follow-up!

I give Night Forbidden a B.

MinnChica: All in all, this series continues to be one of my favorite post-apocalyptic romance series out there. Ware does so many things well with each and every book that it is hard not to get sucked into the world and carried along with the characters. I love that as she focuses on a new couple in each book, constantly moving the plot and overall story arc forward, she also takes the time to revisit the characters of previous books. I loved being able to see more of Zoe and Quent, Elliott and Wyatt and Remy.

Like I said earlier, this book posed more questions than it answered, and although that usually frustrates me, Ware found a way to keep me so engaged in the romance and the overall plot that the lack of questions being answered didn’t bother me. Instead, it drew me further and further into the world, the story, and the overall story arc. I absolutely can not wait for the next book in the series, and can only hope that Ware will get the next one out quickly!

I give Night Forbidden a B+

Since I'm not a Zombie (ganga) lover, this book was one of the best in the series for me

I'm really not fond of Zombies--but surprisingly, I am still a fan of this series. I was pleasantly surprised, therefore, that this installment had other things going for it. It had a physically challenged Heroine. It came up with an ability for Fence. It had more of the Atlantean world, and the underwater environment. For me, it was a welcome change from Apocalyptic Las Vegas.

Adult read due to language and sexual scenes. Books should be read in their proper order, since characters repeat and there's an ongoing plotline.

A second book where I really just didn't want to be with the two that were the main characters.

Fence was boring. I mean, he's got that whole protector thing going on, but he's just annoying! Ana is alright, but she and Fence need to TALK to each other about what they're thinking and feeling! I know, in books, if people actually talked, most of the plot would be fixed, but I will still fight for characters to speak to each other and be open in their relationship!

Guess who's next?! Wyatt!!!

As a half breed, the heroine barely made it out alive from Atlantis and her mother’s people who want to experiment on her- use her as a way for them to walk on land. In the process of escaping her leg was badly mangled but this handicap doesn't stop her from being truly free while she is in the ocean. She has crystals in her body that allow her to breath under water and in the depths of the wide-open water, she is finally able to be a whole person again. She meets the hero at a bar one night and from the second she laid eyes on the large bald black man she knew he was trouble with a capital T-but something about him drew her in.

The hero was one of the group of men who feel asleep in a cave and woke up after the apocalypse. As a guide, he's adapted quite well to this new world he finds himself in. He is still that unapologetic flirt, still that ladies’ man with the killer smile he knows very well drives women crazy. But all that is just a front. He uses his charm and playboy antics to hide the truth deep inside. He misses his family, he is lonely and he suffers from a debilitating fear of water. Just looking at the ocean is enough to send his heart racing and when he finds himself forced into the water-be it to save a young girls life or the heroine's- he becomes terrified and completely irrational in fear. As such, he fears inadequate when it comes to the heroine, knowing her love of the ocean makes their future unlucky. That doesn't stop him from wanting to be with her and he pursues her whole heartedly. The heroine is equally frustrated by the hero's obnoxious sexual jokes and cocky self-confidence as she is attracted. She finds him funny and can't stop herself from being lured in by his charm. But she also sees that all the jokes are a mask for what he hides inside. She can see his torment and his insecurities and they resonate with her own. When the Atlantians make plans to destroy Envy, she is the only one capable of stopping them but she needs the hero's help. Somehow, he must overcome his fears and become who he was meant to be.

I found these characters to be well developed and 3 dimensional. Each had their faults and their virtues. Each had their secrets and their desire to belong somewhere with someone. The hero hides his torment behind that jokester mask and his many sexual innuendos and jokes were just a cover up and as the story progressed he found it harder and harder to hide behind them. He found a woman who saw past that and though this scared him, he was also drawn to her like a moth to the flame. His fear of water was all consuming and every time someone brought it up or hinted at it, he would snap at them. But it was a handicap he could overcome if he acknowledged the truth. The heroine was a very strong female lead-as are all the heroines on the series. She didn't let her leg hold her back and though she was mortified whenever she fell or whenever she felt inadequate- she was full of pride and determination. What both characters had it common was their tendency to hide their insecurities by trying to make a joke about them but inside both characters were wounded. I found their chemistry to be great and the plot line fresh and interesting. I wasn't wowed by the story but I liked it well enough.

I love this series. I wasn't sure how much I was going to like Fence's story simply because we haven't really learned or seen much about Fence in the previous books, but I was looking forward to the advancement of trhe series and a return to the world. I wasn't disappointed and I enjoyed the book - though I like some of the others in the series a little better (that's just a personal preferance tho).

Fence has depth and a history that isn't quite whatI was expecting, but in some ways (at least for me) I found Fence to be less well developed and not as "three dimensional" as some of the other characters. His personal issues with water and the reasons behind those isses (I won't give away the issues or reasons, but they are provided in detail fairly early on in the book) are understandable but for me, lack some of the serious import that other characters have with their issues. It is realistic though that not every character has a really serious and massive issue and that some things are more "hum drum and common" than others. It was refreshing to have a hero with a problem he considers massive and belittling that is really not such a huge deal after all. And i love the orony that goes with the power Fence has..you know, the one he's probably had all along but didn't realize was there due to specific circumstances and situations.

The female love interest has unique issues as well and though I can see how the relationship could happen, she never really appealed to me. There was nothing wrong with her, she just wasn't my favorite heroine and I found it hard to really get into the relationship portion of this book. I also found the ending of the book a bit unusual. The heroine is left in a situation I wasn't expecting and there is a possible fix presented at the end of the book, but we don't to see the results of said solution. Perhaps that is for the next installment? A continuation of the overall story/plot line for the series?

The overall story did move forward and there have been developments and revelations that have pointed toward a possible resolution to the situation this world is in. The solution is possibly a long-term one with a positive outcome for he humans and the world itself. The last story in this postion of the series (I can see how this could be continued into a spin off story line or could "morph" into a different direction entirely) will have to be Remington Steele's book - and it looks like she is going to end up with Wyatt (aren't we all surprised?). I don't really think there is another book between this one and Wyatt'/Remington, but I supposedI could be wrong. My biggest hope is that the story isn't going to play out exactly as I'm seeing it in my head because I prefer it when the author can surprise me and keep me guessing. I may still enjoy the book, but I rarely rate a book with 5 stars if I can predict it half way through - let alone if I can predict it before it is written. I will definitely keep reading and I still recommend the series and have it on my favorites list, but I enjoyed this one less than the others.

It's been awhile since I last read this series... but right away I was brought back to the amazing post Apo. world that J.Ware created! I Abso love her world building... out of the many books I have read over the last year I would have to say this is the best "world" that has been created. Since yes... the wrold is this world... but really it's all changed and different from what we know it is... she writes it in a way that is truelly visible to the minds eye... I was sucked in again right way and found it very difficult to put this book down. The other aspect of this book that I personally loved that some might not is the strong story! There is less steamy hot scenes in here.. but given that the story line was so strong I hardly had issue! The series as a whole has a fantastic story arch and each book leaves you wanting the next one in your had as soon as the final page is read.. So for the creative world and story I loved this book...

The romance.... well left a few things to be desired.. ***might be spoilers from here on out... wouldn't want to accidently ruin anything for anyone... so be warned!!**** Firstly... the personality's of the 2 characters were a bit overly similar for my taste... and made the love story seem cliche... The water issues with home boy and the opposite for his lady made the eventually WAY to obvious... I mean come on, really, do you really think a guy with a water fobia is going to hook up with a water woman and NOT get over that within the book... way to predictable. I think it might have been better without the over played fobia that would lead to the obvious resolution. Speaking of the resolution to that fobia.. for how over done the fobia was throughout the book I was a bit disappointed in how quick he was to get over it... I mean awesome... you have gills and can breath under water... but I think it might take more than a min to get over a 20 year make you sick to be near the water fobia, I'm just sayin....

The twister at the end with her crystals was a big suprised and made me super sad for her... although I'm glad it all worked out in the end.. I think that twist redeemed for me in regards to my above rant on their similaritys and the obvious conclusion with Fence... plus I totally didn't see that happening!

So overall... I really did love this book and am going to have a really hard time wating for March!!!! I hope to see those evil Atlantians die out because Remy keeps that crystal safe and everyone can live happily ever after... and I really hope Ian turns out to be a good guy and that he gets a book too!!!

Joss ware

okay, real quick( read: short)

So if your a joss ware fan, you know joss  books are a-may-zing! They're so so good ! And  it's been ages...AGES since she's last released a book...so seeing this...made me do a happy dance..and I don't dance. Mostly, because I can't, but still....you get the point :p

If, however, you've never read Joss Ware, don't start here!
There's an over arching storyline, that makes more sense if you read them in order:
Beyond the Night
Embrace the Night
Abandon the Night
Night Betrayed
Night Forbidden
And next, Night Resurrected

Okay, now then, I loved, loved loved this! only 2 things kept this from earning 5 stars: everythign felt like it happened to quickly...or maybe it's just that there didn't seem like there was enough story...I wanted more, darnit!

And this second bit is connected to the first, but the H, Fence....I felt like we didn't get enough of him...background wise....it's been awhile, I think over a year since the last book, so I may be wrong, but it didn't seem like we learn a lot about him in previous books, so I'd have liked to learn more about him...in particular about his family!

But altogether, this was an excellent addition to the series, fast paced, some surprising  bits, some not so surprising, some great bits from characters from books past and future,  and all well written, though I wish the epilogue had been just a little bit longer....and that the wait for the next book isn't quite so long* crossing my fingers*

Mystery, romance, apocalyptic books are a strange combination. I like the mysteries. I like the romances. I’m not too keen on apocalyptic books especially with zombies. Okay, Joss Ware slightly changed my mind with his book, Night Forbidden.

A tidal wave wipes out a huge chunk of the western United States. The population is a fraction of what it once was. Skyscrapers fill up the ocean. Fence and his friends are the few who remember the time before The Change. The wild has taken over the world. Zombies are created by the Elite who yearn to obtain immortality and connect with the people of Atlantis, but there is more at stake here. There are conspiracies. Family members can trust each other. Mutations help man survive. It becomes a fight for survival with the help of a girl whose mother was from Atlantis. She might hold the key to it all, but at what cost?

Don’t expect to have story that makes complete sense. After all, this is about a world very unlike our own. All the rules cannot be applied in this storyline. It’s a fiction book with a fantastic story. The author did a great job in creative methods for the life and interactions with the people of Atlantis. This was not just a plain old zombie book. It was much deeper than that with various plots intertwined giving the reader so much to follow and keeping the reader on my toes.

Warnings? This book does have some language in it. Okay, quite a bit of F-bombs. There are also many references to sex and several detailed scenes. None of these are easily avoidable, so skipping is not an option in this story.

One of the greatest things about this book was the various storylines so well put together that once one story ended, another picked up and carried it on. I got caught up in the Fence and Ana story while keeping an eye on Zoe and her man while keeping another eye on Wyatt and the mysterious woman wanted by zombies and man alike. I’ve never multi-tasked so much while reading. I actually enjoyed it.

I did wish there was less language and less sexual references, but the story was surprising great. I now want to read the next book in the series.

Note: This book was provided by the publisher with no expectation of a positive review.

Favorite Lines: "The sight was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. The emptiness billowing inside her mingled with affection and love for Yvonne, and the quiet knowledge that she'd always be an observer rather than a member of a close-knit family. She'd always be a surrogate mother instead of one herself. She'd always have to be on her guard about letting anyone too close to her." (p. 32, egalley)

I love Ware's dark post-apocalyptic world where her Envy Chronicles world is set. It's violent, deadly and full of passion. Passion for survival and for the unexpected appearance of love. No one is undamaged. No one is who they seem to be. All you can be certain of is the appearance of the zombie like former humans wondering the earth and some form of a happy ending. Warning: Don't try to jump into the series with this book or you will be lost.

Night Forbidden introduces a new aspect to the world: mer-like people, aka Atlanteans. They aren't Disney merpeople either. They are the reader's key to learning about the sunken city of Atlanta. Through the water-loving people the reader learns about the crystals which have been sought after throughout the series. We also get to revisit some of the main characters from previous books. One of them, Zoe, about drove me nuts. I wanted to smack that chick.

I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the book once I realized the heroine could breathe underwater. I'm not a fan of mermaid books. I should have known Ware wouldn't let me down. I was fascinated with all aspects of the story. Now there is danger coming on earth and water. It added to the tension which was being built. I want more. Mostly I just want to read Remy's story, but I've a feeling that will be the last book.

If you're looking for a romance book that involves mutated people, zombies and world building which will suck you in, you've got to pick up Ware's Envy Chronicles. Each book is better than the last and I can't wait for the next installment to come out.

NIGHT FORBIDDEN could very well have been a solo story rather than the latest installment in the Envy Chronicles series and it would have worked just as well from a story perspective. I enjoy a good post-apocalypse story and what made NIGHT FORBIDDEN uniquely exciting was the addition of Atlantis being a reason for the Earth’s near total destruction. I thought it was a cool idea to have Fence his friends be from the past (our present) though I would have liked to see some more differences or adjustments for them which they probably dealt with in previous books.

With many apocalypse stories we get zombies and NIGHT FORBIDDEN is no exception, but they were barely seen which I found odd since they kept referencing them. They seemed like such a small threat that when they did show up I just didn’t care and wanted to get back to talking about the central mystery of the story.

Fence was a fun character and I enjoyed his heroic acts just as much as his corny jokes and hilarious comments. He and his friends came out of a Sedona cave 80 years in the future and some of them came out with some unique powers. I kind of felt bad for him throughout most of the book as he’s the one guy that survived the apocalypse but didn’t get any special abilities. On the plus side, he does get the girl. I loved how well Fence and Ana got along almost instantly and how Ana really ‘got’ and liked Fence’s humor and personality. I really liked Ana’s backstory reveal as it links her to Atlantis and the big mystery surrounding it in this story.

While I enjoyed the central story about Atlantis and the danger surrounding the town of Envy, I would have loved to have learned even more about the fabled lost island. NIGHT FORBIDDEN contains a compelling and complex storyline with a slowly building yet touching romance. The fifth book, NIGHT RESURRECTED comes out February 26th 2013.

I am positive this just became my favorite book of the series. I loved Fence. His personality is great. I loved the constant jokes and comments he made in (and out) his head. The fact that Ana got his humor and he made her laugh as often as he did just adds to the many reason they are a great couple. Ana is a very enjoyable heroine to read. She brings a very unique ability to the series. She also sheds some more light on the mysterious crystals that the Cult of Atlantis/Stranger/Elite is adorned with.

The new danger to Envy is definitely attention grabbing. Bounty hunters are after Quent because of what he took from his father. The Elite have been informing the Atlanteans that the residents of Envy are stronger than they appear and need to be stopped before they rise up. Ana is in tune with the ocean enough that she knows something is wrong deep in its depths, and then something strange washes up on the shore of Envy.

I was glad to read pieces where past couples were involved. Zoe and Quent had larger roles than some of the other past couples. I was never a Zoe fan. She has been my least favorite heroine of the series. The fact the she got as much page time as she did annoyed me. I’m still very curious about Wyatt and when he will get his book. I think Joss may have set that up some at the end of Night Forbidden. I’ll keep my fingers crossed on that wish.

This is an easy series for me to love. I love paranormal romance. The paranormal element is also different from most. The majority of the characters were born human and the Change has changed them. The readers are still learning new things about the force behind the Change. I love reading worlds that have been affected by an apocalypse. The Envy Chronicles puts both of these elements into one book.

Also bald das nächste Band bitte. :)

Fence has PTSD from an event in his childhood, but now that he's in the post-apocalyptic future, he doesn't need to worry about it. He can still be the tough guy he always is... wait... FATE has put a women in his life who makes him face his fears.

I loved Ms. Ware's way of throwing a wrench into what was happening with the characters. Fence appears to be a smart-talking player but in reality when we get to know him, that's just a way to cope. And we all have ways to cope when we are scared or out of our element.

Ana is a perfect example of someone who makes the most of each day. She's got her own secrets but her family and the people she cares for are important to her. Her disability is a small part of who she is, but really... the innocence is what draws others to her. People want to care for her right away... Or in the case of some people-USE her...

This story in the Envy series gives us a glimpse at the other characters but is really about Fence and Ana. We don't learn a whole lot about the Atlantians or the Elite who are changing the world to suit them, which makes this story more personal. I loved it. Could be a total stand alone!

The wait is finally over...

It felt like I'd waited for this installment in the series for five years! However, it was only a year and a half. Hehehe

I will just start by saying, "I love Fence!" he is cute, witty, and sexy! I enjoyed the fact that Joss gave you just enough info to remind you of important events that occured in previous books. (I hate it when I have to go back to a previous book to browse a detail because I'm lost.) Things are getting complicated in the city of Envy, but that just means another book is on the way. Yay!

The thing I liked the most about this book was being able to get a brief update on all of the characters. I also enjoyed Fence falling in love, but it seemed to happen rather quickly. Fence is a flirt and I was hoping for more scenes of him flirting with random people, but the sex scenes made up for my brief disappointment. LOL

Thanks Joss for another wonderful installment of this series!

Fence survived the Change with his best friend and a few others only to wake up and find he didn't get any of the powers some of the others did. He is terrified of water and of course he meets Ana who loves the water. The zombies are very close to nonexistent in this book so zombie hatred there is no need to shy away. The Atlantieans are up to their worst and want Ana. Fence must face his biggest fear if he is to save Envy and Ana.

This was one of my favorite books in the series. Now we know who the Elite are and that the Atlantieans are the cause of the change the story arc can really move along.Fence is such a great guy and his humor cracks me up. Ana is handicap on land but doesn't let that hold her back. In the water she is wonderful and helps our boy realize his hidden talent.

This was my least favourite of the Envy Chronicles. I liked Fence in previous books, he had some really good lines and was great at bringing a little humour to otherwise very serious situations. In this book however the sarcastic lines became really annoying. His back story wasn't very interesting and his "gift" didn't excite me. I liked Ana, but I didn't love her. She was interesting enough, but to be fair I was a lot more keen to be reading Remy or Zoë's chapters. I didn't really believe their romance like I have with previous characters. Overall I found myself rushing through this book so that I could start the next one.
