As someone with a BPD diagnosis, I found this workbook useful. There is such a lot of misinformation and bad advice surrounding BPD but this book doesn’t fall into those categories. The author is very knowledgable about BPD and its treatment, and shows great empathy for those of us who live with the disorder. The worksheets are user-friendly so you can work through the book alone if you wish. I found that the worksheets helped me to gain crucial insight into my diagnosis and work out management techniques that work for me. In my opinion, this is a must-read for anyone with a BPD diagnosis, or suspects they may have BPD.
This workbook is based on a YouTube series on Borderline Personality Disorder by Dr Daniel Fox. Both the videos and workbook are extremely helpful to understanding BPD type behavior and how to improve that behavior. It is estimated that 6% of adults have this disorder and the rate is higher among traumatized children. As foster parent learning about BPD was an "aha" moment and shown light not only on my foster kids behavior but also my family history
This book by Dr. Fox is a great start to getting on the right track and in the correct mindset for bettering yourself beyond your BPD. The tone is of an encouraging nature and the activities really do make you dig down deep to the roots of your beliefs/behaviors/thoughts that have kept your BPD mindset in place for so long.
This book helped me greatly in finding areas to work on and did take me several hours of work to get through, but it also helped me see some of the positive sides to living with BPD and also the positive sides of who i am as a person.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone looking to do some at home exploration and study to overcome BPD.
First non-judgemental book on BPD I've read. Loved that it suggested positive affirmation post-it notes since I've previously suggested that to friends with BPD.
Takeaways: - Research shows it likely stems from a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors. - BPD is the most common personality disorder, affecting around six percent of Americans. - Key symptoms involve emotional instability, a fractured sense of self, and turbulent relationships. Often, unhealthy beliefs, behaviors, and patterns have “triggers” that cause intense emotions. - To gain further insight into your BPD, reflect on your family history. - People with BPD often exhibit beliefs, behaviors, and patterns that offer short-term relief but generate long-term harm. - Use visualization to practice empowering habits.
Following are the nine official symptoms of BPD. You must meet at least five to receive an official BPD diagnosis: - Fear of abandonment – you frantically try to avoid people leaving you. - Emotional reactivity – you often act impulsively based on intense emotions. - Unstable relationships – you have intense swings in how you view others. - Unstable self-image – your sense of self is frequently shifting. - Self-harm & Suicidal behavior – you engage in or threaten self-harming or suicidal gestures. - Feelings of emptiness – you often feel alone and empty. - Intense anger – you have emotional outbursts you can’t control. - Stress-related paranoia – when you're stressed, you feel like the world is out to get you. - BPD symptoms show up differently and with different intensity for everyone.
Favourite quote: - “Individuals with a preoccupied attachment type tend to seek out others to help them feel safe when they’re stressed or afraid, and those with a fearful attachment type tend to distance themselves from others out of fear of not being worthy of taking the other person’s time or attention when they need it. Both of these insecure types create a lot of internal conflict. If you scored high for both preoccupied and fearful, it means you have an internal push and pull to be close while fearing being hurt and abandoned.”
I grew tremendously after reading this book. It's A LOT of information, but it's easily digestible and not overwhelming. You can tell the author has a lot of time working with people with BPD. The best part of the book was the exercises that Daniel (the author) included. A book can never replace actual therapy BUT, this is a great alternative if for whatever reason, therapy isnt an option for you right now. Or maybe you want to read up on BPD before committing yourself to therapy. This is a great first step.
I know how hard battling with this disease is. I've been dealing with it since I was 13. To whomever is reading this, I am wishing you luck on conquering this because you are strong enough to do so. Even though it may not feel like it. That's your BPD telling you that you arent. I love you and I hope this book helps you the way it helped me.
I suspect BPD is another way of looking at CPTSD, where CPTSD focuses on harm the patient experiences while BPD focuses on harm to others. I understand they have different diagnostic criteria but suspect these are different manifestations of similar (if not the same) causes. Didn’t do the exercises so I can’t speak to that part but found the text informative. It’s refreshing to have a lens to learn about the experience that doesn’t demonize people.
this workbook is so precious and it helped me a lot! it’s a really great read with a lot of very clever writing exercices who lead me to understand myself so much more. i really recommend it, even for people with “only” CPTSD as it’s close to a lot of BPD symptoms. a truly helpful book, i can’t stress that enough!

1. This book helped me sift through so much of my childhood trauma and my lingering depression and anxiety from events from the past few years. 2. I 100% recommend this book to anyone who has BPD or even just certain aspects of it. 3. This Dr.’s videos on YouTube are also really helpful. 4. Share what you’ve written and learned about yourself. It may be embarrassing at first, but it helped me release some things and it helped my husband understand me better and gave him tips on how to navigate things that were going on with me. 5. It’s a book that can be picked up a few months or a year later to see how you’ve grown or to remind yourself of how to handle your BPD. 6. Just going through this book released me from so many chains.
I got more out of this than i expected to. Some exercises I admit, were a bit beyond me or maybe I am not ready for them yet as I had trouble following and connecting dots but overall, this really did make me look a little deeper within myself and recognise some patterns. Was far more useful to me than the DBT manual that I couldnt really relate to or find much of anything useful to me in that. This one forces you to take some responsibility which was good to see. Hopefully I can revisit it at a later date maybe but I certainly got a bit out of this one.

An amazing and thorough workbook about understanding the Borderline, accepting yourself, living with the Borderline, and growing with it.
I can’t recommend this book enough for anyone who has been diagnosed or suspects they have BPD.
Though it may seem repetitive and that you’ll be scribbling in and stating the same answers over and over and over again, the repetitiveness of the exercises is meant to help one understand, accept, and internalize what BPD does to them, how they can control it, and how we can life a happy life with it.
Self love and self acceptance are integral parts of the process of change and building yourself a better life with BPD.
Good luck to everyone on the Borderline! Life is beautiful and amazing despite us having it!! And so are we. 💙💚
BPD or not, this is a great book for anyone dealing with emotion dysregulation.
“My new ways allow me to breathe. I now know what my buttons, triggers, and beliefs, behaviors, and patterns are. When I feel abandoned and empty, I can explore these feelings, control them, and change them—clearly seeing how my life really is and that my wishes and fears don’t have to control me and confuse me. I can use healthy defenses and build healthy relationships with myself and other people. These are filled with love and connection that allow me to grow. From this growth I’ve been able to paint a picture of a future that I never thought was possible, but it is, and I own it. And I feel wrapped in integrity and resolve to achieve good things in my life.”
It’s been nearly a year and I’m only a bit over half way through. I have accepted that I will never be ‘done’ with this book. Once I finish it I will have to start from the beginning because reading once is not enough, you have to practice what you’ve learned and to even remember the stuff in the first place I have to be exposed to the material.
Every single chapter in this book is very valuable to anyone who has BPD, I would argue that it works for other disorders as well. The info and advice are so spot on, it’s like the author knows me without knowing my individual life.
I could not recommend this book enough. But mind you, this book is like a therapist and it will make you work.
Very helpful workbook, but it feels like it is directed towards those who exist on the more extreme end of the BPD spectrum. I wish there were more examples and practices for those with a mild-moderate form of BPD as well, but nevertheless there are a ton of helpful exercises for managing all of the symptoms of BPD.
Good for anyone who needs a solid workbook on handling BPD. Lots of examples and interactive sections where you can reflect and write how lessons apply to you. Even if you don't have BPD or are formally diagnosed still get this book. It will help you better understand your triggers, emotions, behaviors, patterns and ways to cope.
Dr. Fox is an amazing doctor who specializes in treating personality disorders. He does a remarkable job at informing the reader about how the Borderline mind works. He provides tools to counteract the negative core beliefs those of us with BPD hold typically most likely from traumatic experiences as a child/adolescent . I got a lot out of this book.
I am a therapist and have used this book with several clients. It has been informational, thoughts provoking and a guide to help my clients understand their symptoms and work on them in between sessions, this gives them more control over what they can use to process their emotions without a therapist next to them.
i was diagnosed in january ’23, after struggling with it for years and was told its just ”depression”. now im in recovery, thank u to this book and months of dbt. this book pretty much is like dbt, it has the same structure, so if ur starting dbt or cant afford it but need it, this book has many of the same infos.
I owe my life to this book. This book allowed me to separate myself from my bpd, dissect it and grow beyond it. It has taught me valuable tools to use during bpd flares and enlightened me on the complex connections between my bpd and my behaviour towards the world. I never thought I’d have the control this book has given me. Daniel J Fox, thank you.
DNF. I bought this during a mental-hypochondria phase when I was sequentially convinced I have ADHD, autism, bipolar, borderline, etc. obviously, my actual problem is anxiety.
anyway, 3* because I learned from a clear first chapter that I am not BPD; not higher because the book was then pretty uninteresting to me, and I returned it.
This was the most life-changing book I have ever read! Wherever you are on the BPD spectrum, I highly recommend that you invest the time in working through this. Emotion is at the heart of everything we do, and there is no greater superpower than learning to regulate, your emotions.
Read this in order to recommend to my psychotherapy clients. Initially I found the verbiage early in the book to be a little too advanced, but the exercises, examples, and further content made up for it. I definitely will be utilizing this book along with DBT for “hands-on” task-oriented patients.
There are no smiley face stickers included. Very disappointing. Also I dislike how much I can relate to the main character so for that I am going to have to give it one star :p
