The perfect holiday gift for fans of the flabby tabby, this rollicking collection includes three books in one: Garfield at Large, Garfield Gains Weight, and Garfield Bigger Than Life.
Witty, urbane, sassy, and downright delightful, here are the first three original books of pure Garfield collected in one packed volume. They tell the story of the feisty feline's birth, adoption, and growth into general wonderfulness--just in case you've forgotten--and remind us why we loved him like we do.
James Robert "Jim" Davis is an American cartoonist who created the popular comic strip Garfield. Other comics that he has worked on are Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, Slapstick, and a strip about Mr. Potato Head.
Jim Davis was born in Fairmount, Indiana, near Marion, where he grew up on a small farm with his father James William Davis, mother Anna Catherine (Carter) Davis, brother Dave, and 25 cats. Davis' childhood on a farm parallels the life of his cartoon character Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was also raised on a farm with his parents and a brother, Doc Boy. Jon, too, is a cartoonist, and also celebrates his birthday on July 28. Davis attended Ball State University. While attending Ball State, he became a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He earned the dubious honor of earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university, an honor incidentally shared with Late Show host David Letterman.
Davis as of 2007 resides in Muncie, Indiana, where he and his staff produce Garfield under his company, Paws, Inc., begun in 1981. He was married to Carolyn, a singer and elementary teacher whom he met while both were attending college, and has a son named James with her. However, the couple divorced, and Davis since 2000 has been married to Jill, Paws' senior vice president of licensing, who has worked there approximately 25 years.
Ironically, Davis did not own cats when he started Garfield because of Carolyn's allergies, but they owned a Labrador retriever named Molly. With Jill, the family has expanded to include children Ashley and Chris; three grandchildren, Chloe, Carly and Cody; cats, Spunky and Nermal; and a dog, Pooky.
A recent rewatch of Garfield & Friends had me longing to re-read the original comic strip. My favorites are definitely the early years, when Garfield truly was larger than life, and the majority of the jokes were about how cats gotta cat. I've read the first three collections numerous times over the years, in various forms, and they still hit the spot ♥
I think the first three books in the Garfield series are the best because they're the most classic. Jim Davis has created (in my perspective) a true masterpiece. Jon, my favorite character can be so dumb and not even know it. I feel bad for Odie. Garfield beats on him and Odie lets him. I guess Odie is just that stupid. In my opinion, Garfield is just misunderstood. He's a glutton because he loves food and Jon can't hear him when Garfield insults him. Odie is so stupid that he doesn't even care that he's being shoved off the table. In other words Garfield lives in a house full of clueless people that love it when they hear that something is a "no-brainer".
The origins of Garfield here! There’s nothing to dislike, as a cat owner this comic strip is extremely relatable and a lot of the jokes fit the personality of my cats perfectly.
Another thing I like is how you see Garfield evolve throughout the book from his original gargantuan design to a smaller and cuter (but still large) version as the book progresses.
Highly recommend, especially if you’re a cat owner!
Garfield has always been one of my favourite cartoon characters so allow me to be biased and say there's never a dull moment with this one! And you just can't have enough!
My hero, Garfield! The introduction to the world's best orange-striped, lasagna-loving comic cat. As well as how Odie came to be with him, Pooky, and (ick) Nermal. Although Garfield was really quite mean in these first books, especially to Odie. I had to subtract a star for his real meanness, but it was a fun read overall. Out of curiosity, am I the only one to think he really looked like a sabertooth cat (minus the huge teeth) in his very first comic? I did love being able to read all of the first comics and will be able to read all of the series, eventually, as I collect these books.
I grew up watching Garfield, but this is my first time reading more than an occasional strip. Also my last. It works better as a cartoon telling an extended story that can hide the fact Davis only uses 4 or 5 jokes over and over again. He also reuses panels so much it was distracting. I'm sure it's a necessity in a daily environment, but I've been reading a lot of comic strip collections lately and I've never actually noticed it before. There are times here where you open to two pages and see 3 or 4 of the same panel in 6 days worth of strips. It just seems incredibly lazy.
Potrójna dawka humoru, w twardej oprawie, znakomita rozrywka dla małych, średnich i dużych. A właściciele kotów z pewnością znajdą podobieństwa Garfielda do swoich pupili ;)
I really enjoyed this book. I have been a fan of Garfield since my childhood is it was nice to read those older comics that I hadn't read before. I found that I laughed quite a lot at the jokes and couldn't stop smiling while reading.
So much nostalgia. I'm not sure how many times I've read this volume but the sass of this crazy, lasagna-loving feline makes me chuckle on almost every page. Poor Jon. Poor Odie. Poor Nermal. Garfield be king.
To me, Jim Davis is a comic genius. His comic strips are so funny, and the cast and different forms of jokes reaches a wide range. If I had every fat cat 3 pack published right now, I would read them all and still want more. These comics for me are like Garfield and lasagna.
The same jokes over and over but I feel like it’s almost meditative as I read further and further. Wild to see how little and how much Garfield has changed since the late 70s. The Liz jokes in particular are gross.
