This sequel to "Assumed Engagement," a variation of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," follows Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy after their wedding. When they return to Pemberley after their wedding journey to Paris, they begin their lives anew. Darcy works to get the school for the deaf started and Elizabeth learns her role as Mistress of Pemberley. Kitty visits Pemberley as Georgiana's guest, and the two grow in their friendship while searching for love. This sequel also addresses the issue of how it came to be that Darcy visited Ramsgate in time to rescue Georgiana from Wickham's clutches.
Kara Louise has been writing "Pride and Prejudice" novels since 2001. She has published 8 novels, 2 that were published by Sourcebooks Publications. She was born in the San Fernando Valley, just north of Los Angeles, but moved to Kansas in 1991. She lives just outside Wichita with her husband, sharing their 10 acres with an ever changing menagerie of animals. They have one married son who lives in St. Louis..
I am a fan of Kara Louise’s books. I read this one shortly after it was published but just now finished re-reading it so that it would be fresh in my mind for this review. It is a sequel to Assumed Engagement but can be read as a “stand alone” novel. There is little angst and no bedroom scenes. Kara does not write those. There is romance but little of the sexual chemistry some like to read of between couples.
This story begins with Elizabeth’s and Fitzwilliam Darcy’s honeymoon in Paris. While there they look into a school for the deaf and make arrangements for the one teacher and his family and adopted deaf daughter to move to Derbyshire to help build and organize another school for the deaf. Parallel events concern Georgiana’s coming of age, her first season, and her discovery of love. Here Darcy finds that his thoughts about class differentials have not been put to rest. He struggles to make sound decisions and offer wise advice but will love win out?
Many of the actors we know are present. Kitty resides with ODC much of the time and decides she prefers to be called Catherine. She and Georgiana become friends and giggle over issues many teen-aged girls have been giggling over for centuries. We learn of Mary’s situation and Wickham pokes up his head, of course. There is a kidnapping and a rescue. Little is said about Lydia other than a mention or two.
I found the use of the deaf school an interesting issue brought to the foreground, as I have also recently read a story online in which Darcy was, himself, deaf. The treatment of that class during Regency times was portrayed as those unfortunate souls being ostracized as mentally ill or as the result of misdeeds by the parents or as idiots. This book handles it much more gently.
The cover on the paperback I own is different and the book shows publication dates of 2001 and 2007.
I enjoyed this sequel to Assumed Engagement very much! I liked the story of Georgiana and David, as well as Kitty's maturation. I liked it a lot more than the first novel, it probably had to with less mentions of "gardenias". LOL!
I enjoyed this so much. I thought the conversations between characters were well thought out. I could totally picture Georgiana's shy sweet nature even more clearly. Kitty was maturing right before your eyes. It was very believable that Kitty would start setting her sights higher while Georgiana would be petrified. I loved the manipulation of Mr. Bostwick. Darcy was his usual stubborn society conscious self. I so loved the deaf school connection. I have friends that use ASL and so this had special meaning for me. The description of the deaf children playing etc was just amazing. The things we take for granted.....George Wickham of course shows his dastardly self for a suspenseful moment. It all ended well.
This book is the confirmation of the fact that talent is nothing without practice. So we can consider "Assumed engagement" as a first step and "Assumed obligation" as a second step. This second episode is far more absorbing than the first one. I really enjoyed the way the author viewed Georgiana and Kitty (or better Catherine), I've always imagined Elizabeth trying to do something to improve her sister behaviour. Moreover the first period of marriage for Darcy and Elizabeth is not without problems and misunderstandings: that seems very realistic! In this novel, characters are deeper and better shaped than in "Assumed engagement" and the result is a very fluid story, that will keep reader's attention focused. Well-recommended reading!
I really enjoyed this second book by Kara Louise. I enjoyed seeing Georgiana and Kitty trying to find their true love and how they grow. I do think she was trying to cram too much information for the ending though. It was a nice read, but at the end you thought you were in a whirl wind.
ODC are married and goes to Paris on their honeymoon. Georgiana has a suitor when they come back that are not to Mr Darcys liking. Sweet, romantic and exciting. Loved it!
