This is a review of the entire series.

Rick Grimes is a strong-willed deputy who missed the end of the world because he was in a coma for a month after getting shot in the line of duty. Shaken, starving and confused, Rick escapes the horror of the abandoned hospital only to be met with something far more terrible. Not only has the world ended, but the dead have learned to walk and to kill without mercy. After learning that his wife and son have fled to Atlanta from a single survivor and his son, Rick goes on a journey to reunite with his family and search for more survivors.

Rick quickly has to come to terms with the fact that the world has ended and only a select few survived. The dead have risen from their graves and they prey on the living. In a world where every minute feels like hours, where there's no such thing as law and order, where finding a small meal is a tremendous task, the walking dead are quite possibly the least threatening thing for the survivors to have on their breaking minds. Humanity is pushed to the brink of destruction, forcing them to embrace their cruel and primal nature in order to survive. Sometimes you have to be more concerned about who you let into your community so they don't kill you in your sleep and steal everything you once cared about. Rick has no choice but to abandon the ways of law and order that he's upheld as an officer for so long in order to protect the few loved ones he has left. He has to become a monster to protect his crew or risk being devoured by those who became more monstrous than him and even the walking dead.

Despite zombies running the world and having the series named after them, what really sets this series apart from the average zombie apocalypse tale is the focus on realism and the daily struggles, flaws and depth of the characters. There's plenty of badass zombie killing action, but the action often takes a back seat to give the characters plenty of times to share their extremely tragic yet endearing stories, grow through mutual suffering and learn to adapt to a world that has left them to die. Even after the world has ended, many people still can't see eye to eye. They turn on each other and kill each other when they should come together. Others form alliances in spite of their differences and try to rebuild over the corpse of everything that was lost. The daily human drama and conflict is more intense than any monster apocalypse could hope to be.

We watch Rick struggle to balance his old moral code with the many necessary evils he has to commit in order to survive and make the world a better place for the ones he holds close. We watch people like Glen, Dale and Maggie attempt to find love in spite of having every reason to be filled with fear, hate and self-loathing. Characters like Michonne have to learn how to forgive themselves and convince themselves they deserve to be loved despite all the blood on their hands. We watch the weak like Carl and Andrea become strong and sometimes the strong become evil like The Governor. Even monsters like the wicked yet oddly lovable Negan are given the chance to find new ways of redeeming themselves by struggling alongside the other survivors that have all been changed by the horrors of the fallen world.

The pacing is extremely slow and I can understand why that may be a turnoff for a lot of people, but I eventually learned to enjoy watching the characters grow, overcome their trauma, find meaning in life and learn to love again. The characters are forced to do many terrible things to survive and it haunts them every waking moment. The ways they overcome these regrets is very realistic, human and hopeful. The slow pacing really gives the feeling that we're living beside these people. The way every tiny detail of their lives and who they are is explored makes them feel very real and believable.

When I first started reading the series, I wasn't expecting it to have such an uplifting ending. It seemed so bleak and nihilistic for a long time and things would go horribly wrong even when they seemed to be going so well, but the finale channels all the pain, suffering and betrayal of the previous volumes and tops it off with a very touching and inspiring finish. This was never a story about hopelessness. It's about learning to appreciate the little things, learning to forgive yourself and learning to move on even when it's hard. When everything seems lost there's always more to be found, even when we believe otherwise because we convince ourselves that we don't deserve to be happy ever again. Instead of dwelling on what was lost, strive to try and make things better than they were before.

I've never been a huge fan of zombie apocalypse stories, but The Walking Dead had enough heart and strong social commentary to make me stick by the characters until the end and I enjoyed every moment of their long trial.

After the intensity of the last issue, the stakes are high as the survivors at the prison are still grappling with the harsh realities of their world. Rick, exhausted and bruised both physically and emotionally, is clearly undergoing a pivotal moment in his character's arc. The conflicts, both internal and external, are escalating, and the group is on the verge of serious shifts in leadership, morality, and survival tactics. Issue #24 dives deep into these topics, revealing even more about the group's fragile dynamics and Rick's evolving mindset.

Rick finally wakes up after being unconscious for a full 26 hours. The fact that Carol is the one sitting by his side is already a curious development. As soon as Rick opens his eyes, he tries to lighten the mood with a joke about zombies—something completely unexpected given how grim things have become. Carol, clearly not used to this, is taken aback, not realizing he was even making a joke. This subtle moment of humor quickly spirals into something more serious, as Carol suddenly kisses Rick, catching him—and the readers—completely off guard.

Rick, understandably shocked, immediately questions Carol's motives. Carol explains that she kissed him because she was touched by how he stood up for her in his confrontation with Tyreese. It’s an awkward moment, made even more uncomfortable by Carol’s assurance that she won’t tell Lori. However, Rick’s response is direct and clear: he will tell Lori himself, emphasizing that he values Carol only as a friend. This exchange highlights Carol's fragile emotional state and her need for validation, while also reinforcing Rick's commitment to Lori, despite all the chaos around him.

As Rick gets out of bed and starts to move around, Dale comes to talk to him about an important decision the group has made while he was unconscious: Rick is no longer fit to be their leader. Dale informs Rick that they've decided the pressure has gotten to him, and that a committee—comprising Rick, Tyreese, Dale, and Hershel—will take over leadership responsibilities. Surprisingly, Rick agrees with the decision without much argument, showing some self-awareness about his recent erratic behavior. He even comments on the lack of women in the committee, but Dale explains that the group as a whole voted on this leadership configuration. This is a crucial moment, as it symbolizes Rick’s acceptance that the burden of leadership has taken its toll on him.

While Rick is grappling with the loss of his leadership role, Carol goes to tell Carl that his father has woken up. Carl's reaction is revealing: "Nope. My dad's real tough. I wasn't worried at all." It’s a glimpse into how Carl views his father—as a figure of unwavering strength, even when faced with immense physical and emotional challenges. Carl’s confidence in Rick contrasts sharply with the uncertainty the rest of the group feels toward him.

The tension culminates when Rick steps out into the courtyard, where the rest of the group is tending to Hershel’s garden. As he addresses them, the group reacts with visible unease, a reflection of how much their perception of Rick has changed. Rick, sensing this, brings up the criticisms he's heard regarding his mental state. Tyreese takes the opportunity to mention that Rick "went too far" when he killed Dexter. This accusation sets Rick off. He defends his decision to kill Dexter as a necessary act to protect the group, especially since Dexter intended to kick them out of the prison.

Rick’s frustration is palpable as he tries to explain the new reality they're living in. He points out that their old concepts of right and wrong no longer apply in this world. Tyreese argues that the group shouldn’t abandon their humanity, but Rick, increasingly agitated, counters that the very nature of their lives has changed. In a powerful monologue, Rick declares that the world is no longer what it was, and that they must adapt if they want to survive. He urges them to let go of any hope that things will ever return to "normal." His speech builds to a chilling conclusion: "WE ARE THE WALKING DEAD!"

This line encapsulates the core of the issue. Rick is acknowledging that, while they may not be physically dead like the zombies around them, they are living on borrowed time, existing in a state of constant survival that strips away their former identities. The group may still want to cling to old rules and moral codes, but Rick is trying to prepare them for the hard truth: in this world, those who hesitate or hope for rescue will die.

Carol's kiss, while brief, felt entirely out of place. It highlighted her emotional vulnerability, but it also showed a lack of respect for Rick’s marriage to Lori. Her fragile mental state is clearly pushing her to seek validation wherever she can find it, but it was unsettling to see her make such an impulsive move. Rick, to his credit, handled the situation well, maintaining clear boundaries.

The formation of the committee was a necessary development. The group's recognition that Rick has been carrying the weight of leadership for too long, combined with their concerns about his recent behavior, made this decision feel like a step in the right direction. It diffuses the constant pressure on Rick while also ensuring that decisions will now be made collectively, not unilaterally.

The criticism of Rick’s decision to kill Dexter felt misplaced, though. From the reader's perspective, Dexter was a clear threat to the group's safety. His death, while brutal, was necessary. Tyreese's insistence on clinging to old-world morality is understandable but ultimately unrealistic. In a world overrun by zombies, the lines between right and wrong become blurred, and Rick is simply trying to keep the group alive. His argument that the rules have changed rings true, and while his methods may seem harsh, they are a reflection of the harsh world they now inhabit.

Rick's declaration that they are "The Walking Dead" was a powerful moment. It’s a grim realization that they are no longer just survivors—they are part of the undead world they once feared. This issue marks a turning point, not only for Rick as a leader but also for the group as a whole. They must now come to terms with the fact that survival may require them to become something unrecognizable from their former selves.

Issue #24 is a pivotal chapter in The Walking Dead series, as it forces the group to confront the harsh realities of their new world. Rick’s leadership is challenged, but his emotional outburst is a wake-up call for everyone. The survivors can no longer pretend that they are living in the same world they once knew. As Rick puts it, they are the walking dead now, and they must adapt—or perish.

This issue leaves us on edge, eager to see how the group will move forward after Rick's powerful declaration. It’s clear that the prison, once a symbol of safety, is becoming a pressure cooker of emotions and moral dilemmas, and the tension is only going to escalate from here.

Another Dragonball Z-like issue. Only this time, the focus was more on grand speeches. Rick had something to say, and woe upon anyone who dared to interrupt him. Rick has completely 180ed in the last few issues. I guess if I lived through the kind of year he has had, I might be crazy too. I don't understand how Rick can't see the difference between his underhanded killing of Dexter was not the same as Tyreese killing his daughter's boyfriend. I totally agree, Tyreese just finished the job. What he tortured afterwards was the zombie ... which is questionable, but it was Rick who lied about it. Tyreese just didn't contradict the lie.

I understand why the four men were voted into the committee ... none of the other characters seem like they would want the task. I think Lori would if she wasn't so strangely pregnant. At this point in the story it's almost been a year since the whole thing started. Lori must be getting pretty close to popping.

The last few pages of this issue did draw me in a little. I enjoyed the poetry at the end of Rick's speech. Let's hope the next volume holds more awesome and less awful than this one. I'll give the story a clean slate. Let's see if it can win me back.

Being a huge fan of the show, I wanted to see how the original writing started and how the show writers followed and deviated from the comics. My dislikes were that the comics are much more crude, crass, and unnecessarily violent. I did like the change in relationships and how people worked together differently, and the comics have a different creepiness feel than you get watching it on TV. Overall, I prefer the show, and probably will not finish out the comic book series.

'We Are The Walking Dead'
Roll credits *ding*
This felt like another slow paced issue, not the most exciting. Carol just going around kissing everyone it appears, even Rick getting a smooch, like come on gurl, reel it in.
The group doesn't want Rick as their leader, so an all male committee has been formed, like come on, I highly doubt Andrea wouldn't want part of that action but whatever, we just wanna be protected by 2 old men and 2 men with serious anger issues. Gotcha.
Rick gives a speech about basically adapting to the new world, he's the only one who seems to understand this apparently.
And that be that.
p.s I don't know why but this front cover is making laugh so hard.

'We are the walking dead.'

That speech gave me shivers. Reminded me of the tv shows when Rick said 'we are the walking dead.'. I'm glad they 'stole' some lines straight from the comics and put them into the tv series. Nice.

After Rick scrapping with Tyreese its decided that he’s no longer fit to be “leader” of the gang; instead the survivors now have a committee with Hershel, Tyreese, Dale and Rick as the decision makers. Kirkman slows things down this issue and shows he’s comfortable with Adlard doing pages of talking heads. Rick makes note in his closing speech that “its been almost a year” since Z-day, it’s always nice to have a little note on the passing of time so you can grasp how far we’re at on their timeline.

The group decides that Rick is no longer the leader of the group. They say the pressure is getting to him and that he is on the brink of insanity. Rick even thinks this is true, but he is seeing things more clear than everybody else, and a shocking truth awaits for the group.

The Best. Rick is still alive. After the beating, and the pressure Rick has been under he finally wakes up. The farm is well under way to start producing real food for the prison, instead of them eating the canned goods that has become the normal diet. That face and full two page spread of Rick saying "We are the Walking Dead". Awesome! Rick's speech is pretty epic. I think they needed to hear it and he needed to say it. He finally understood what Shane was getting at I think. Rick is finally understanding that to be alive is to kill others, not just the walkers but the living if need be.

The Worst. The group is wanting Rick to step down as leader. I would understand maybe shared leadership to take the full pressure off of Rick, but I think Rick needs to be the leader. As crazy as he became it was still necessary for him to do those things.

The Differences. Rick didn't have this speech in the show until this season which is Season 5, which is way after the prison. I like the factor they still had this speech in the TV series and it made a bit more sense to have it where they did in the show.

Those Remembered. No one died in this issue.

Recommend. To the fans of The Walking Dead Universe, zombies, horror dramas, prisons and apocalypse style stories.

Why is Carol the first person that Rick sees when he regains consciousness? Where the hell is Lori? Why is it that his wife is nowhere in sight when he wakes up? I knew she was a terrible wife to begin with, and she is showing her true colors.

I do not understand why Rick is freaking out about cracking some silly joke. It is not like he hurt anyone by making his joke, so he just needs to calm the hell down and check out what is going on.

Why the hell did Carol kiss Rick? He is not her husband or her boyfriend and she needs to get a damn grip. The guy just woke up after being unconscious for 26 hours. The last thing he needs is to deal with you and your issues.

I like the idea of them forming a committee for when it comes to making decisions. I just hope this does not end up being a stupid idea. Rick will do what needs to be done. I hope the others on the committee can step up and do the same.

I do NOT feel like Rick should have had to explain himself to the group. He killed Dexter to protect them and that should be all that anyone cares about. They killed Thomas because the guy killed two little girls and needed to die, too.

I like Rick's speech about them needing to change since the world has changed. What he is saying makes a lot of sense and anyone who disagrees with him is a damn moron and not using their brain.

I LOVE Rick's whole long speech about them BEING the walking dead. It is so true and applies not just to them, but the zombies as well. It is a good comparison in my opinion and I am glad Rick said it.

"The second we put a bullet in the head of one of these undead monsters -- the moment one of us drove a hammer into one of their faces -- or cut a head off, we became what we are! And that's just it. That's what this comes down to. You people don't know what we are. We're surrounded by the dead and we're AMONG them. And when we finally give up WE BECOME THEM! we're living on borrowed time here. every minute of our life is a minute we steal from them. You see them out there you know that when we die we become them. you think we hide behind walls to protect us from the walking dead. don't you get it? WE ARE THE WALKING DEAD!"

Rick wakes up a day later from passing out.

Carol is there to greet him and thank him for sticking up for her. So, she kisses him on the mouth.

Dale tells Rick that he's not going to be the leader anymore.

The Committee is formed, made up of: Rick, Dale, Hershel, and Tyreese.

The women did not want to be on the committee.

Right now it has almost been a year since the apocalypse started.

Definitely an improvement. The pacing is quick, but not as fast as before. Also, the chapter wrapped up in such a satisfying way. There are tensions to be sure, but it finally seems things are hopefully calming down.
