I’m a huge fan of anything paranormal and I always have been. I get super excited whenever they have those Twilight Zone Marathon days and anything ghost or vampire related will always attract my attention.
My interests are varied but aside from writing, I’m most excited about traveling. I’m extremely fortunate to have been able to live in England and Scotland, both places really having a profound effect on my books.
Thanks for checking out my books and I hope you enjoy them! Happy Haunting!
Oh. My. God. I was/am freaking out. There was a point while I was reading this novel that I took hold of my friend/co-workers arm and started shaking it with all my might completely freaking out because something big happens in this novel. I don’t want to ruin it but I was thinking “No! No! Oh my! It all make sense! I know what’s going to happen! OH.MY.GOD! That is so friggin’ perfect!”. I know you are probably sitting there with big buggy eyes thinking “she is firmly on the pipe” but, no. There was just a moment when things about this book connect with things from the first book and even the past that makes anyone reading it want to do the can-can. Make sure your not standing close to people while you are reading this book by the way. It was sheer beauty that makes me have a lady-crush on one H.P. Mallory. I truly wish I had a mind capable of thinking that far ahead and being able to write in plots in the first book that become twist in the second. Anyhow you clearly understand how awesome this book was for me. I highly recommend. Do you want emotion? Do you want to cry and laugh ad get angry? Do you want to be surprised? Do you want to swoon over a man/men? Do you want to cheer your heroine on? If you answered yes to any and/or all of these I have a question for you? Why are you still reading this and not out purchasing these books? Good: Jolie—Oh my lordy. I am so proud of you. It’s like watching a child grow up. You were a psychic when we started off together and now…you can actually kick my plump little rump. So proud *tear. Rand—I wanted to slap you Rand. SO MANY TIMES! But then through the second half of the book you were like Mr. Darcy for a second (as in you infuriated me) then I was in love with you again. Sinjin—There is a whole different side to Sinjin. I’m lovin it, yet wondering what is he really all about? Bad: Nothing. Everything falls together perfectly. Dear lord it was good. Overall (Writing style, story line, and general): Overall the plot and story line surpassed the first. Once again there were two stories in one novel (sort of) but these seemed to mesh well even better than the first novel. The characters as still brilliant and even more in depth. SO MUCH gets revealed it was awesome. And I didn’t have to re-read anything to make sure I was understanding things correctly. All of this= awesomeness. And I will be continuing the series.
I didn't like the first book in this series, but I gave the second a shot because I like other series by this author. My expectations were low because I despised the characters previously. Characters that are over the age of 18 but act like they're experiencing puberty pangs are intolerable. I must have been high on carbon monoxide fumes when I bought this book.
If you're wondering what killed it for me, I present the following: "...his limp thingy" "...like a hula hoop sausage style"
That's right, folks. I bought an adult paranormal romance that was written by a 12 year old girl. I can watch Kindergarten Cop and hear a 5 year old say "penis and vagina", but an adult author who can physically drive to the f**king book store, buy a thesaurus, and actually read it gives me "thingy"?!? THINGY? Cock, wang, franks and beans, dick, third leg, schlong, ding dong, man meat, love sword, rod' o' passion, dinglehopper....ANYTHING BUT THINGY! What are you going to do next? Poke it with a stick?
"Ewwww, his thingy moved!!" "That means it likes you, honey!"
I seriously lost major pounds reading this book because it seemed like every time I turned the page I was jumping up and down with excitement over a new plot twist, swooning with giddiness of the TWO extremely sexy male characters or so engrossed with what was happening with Jolie that stopping to eat was a major inconvenience. I absolutely loved the first book, Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble and expected pretty much the same for Toil And Trouble so I was completely blown away with just how incredible this book was to read and just how tied up my emotions became because this was definitely one of the BEST books I read all year. The book had me completely turned inside out and upside turn and I LOVED every single word of it!!
Toil and Trouble picks up where the last book left off and straight away I saw a difference. Jolie had just won a bet with Odran and wakes up to find a concerned and protective Rand. She’s now weak from overusing her magic and needs plenty of TLC to regain her strength. With the Fae now joining in the war against Bella, things begin to heat up as all the different groups come together to Pelham Manor to train. Desperately wanting to be a part of the preparations and her need to destroy Ryder for what he’s done, Jolie is frustrated when it seems Rand is making the decisions for her. The sexy warlock is different now, more attentive to her and although she slowly begins to understand why he’s so adamant about not bonding with her, it still hurts. To add fuel to the fire, things begin to heat up with Sinjin, the seductive vampire who always seems to be around when she needs him and it doesn’t take long before she sees an opportunity to help her in the battle. It involves working closely with Sinjin and everything must be done away from the watchful eye of Rand. Things don’t go as strictly as planned and things blow up, leaving Jolie to take drastic, dangerous steps that will put her on the frontline. Along the way, Jolie’s heart takes different turns and her feelings begin to deepen for Sinjin, confusing her as she once again has to evaluate her heart. Just when Jolie thinks that everything’s going according to her plan, a shocking turn of events happen that completely pulls the rug out from under her. Suddenly things become way more complicated than before, the risk is greater and even though she has the opportunity to have everything she’s ever wanted; Jolie has to make a heartbreaking decision. What will she chose? LOL you have to read it to find out but prepare yourself because the twists in this book are AMAZING and will leave you utterly speechless.
I honestly don’t know how the author does it. I went into the book thinking I knew it all. I figured that I knew roughly how the story would be; I was certain that Rand had blown his chance with Jolie and that my lust buddy Sinjin would swoop in and whisk Jolie away. Done deal. End of story. SOOOO not how it went and I have to say I absolutely LOVED the uncertainty of it all. HP Mallory has a really great sense of humor that I really enjoyed throughout the book and it had me chuckling, sometimes so loud I’d wake my husband out of a dead sleep. There was one scene earlier on in the book that was so hilarious, it took several attempts for me to catch my breath long enough to stop laughing. She wrote with great emotion which for me is such an important aspect of a great book. Whether it was in a tender moment between Jolie and Rand, a seductive one with Sinjin or a terrifying battle scene, I was completely hooked and unable to separate myself from the characters. I wasn’t just given a bunch of scenes stringed together; I was given an experience that felt very close to a cardio workout. One that was thrilling to the very end and I closed the book impatiently eager for book three.
Jolie was fabulous in this story, becoming much stronger as I read. I loved that she was so determined and that she was willing to do what was needed to put her plan into action. I totally understood her need for revenge because Ryder was a monster, a vile and disgusting vampire that I’d gladly hop in line just for a shot at staking him. Ryder aside, she knew she needed to be beside Rand in the battle and she knew if she didn’t do something she ran the risk of being “stashed” against her will in safety, which wasn’t Jolie at all. She’s the woman that fights for what she needs and although I was sad that she had to go to such measures to do it, I loved that she wasn’t deterred and that she was so creative. She had incredible heart throughout the book and her poor heart gets pulled through the wringer a few times but Jolie’s resilient and I just loved watching how she dealt with every situation. I laughed with her, cheered for her and sadly there were times my heart broke for her. The lengths she goes to for love and to do what was right was extraordinary and I couldn’t help but admire her for it.
You need to know I went into the book a strong supporter of Sinjin. My gosh that man was like liquid chocolate, so smooth and seductive and with the back and forth of Rand and his emotions; I was completely ready for Jolie to kick him to the curb for my favorite vampire. So when I began to see a different Rand, a more attentive and openly affectionate Rand, my “lust” for Sinjin began to be overshadowed by how strongly my heart started to chant Rand’s name. How did Jolie stand it all? Two deliciously sexy men, both with their own strengths and weaknesses and both were vying for her attention. Sinjin was openly ready to commit to her and I could definitely see why he was such a temptation because he was always available whenever Jolie needed him. There was no holding back and how could Rand possibly compete with that when his fear of bonding still played a huge part in his relationship with Jolie. His fear was so understandable as Rand shared his heart with her and it wasn’t long before I switched camps and became Team Rand. What can I say, heart trumps lust any day but what a rollercoaster and what incredible male characters. I really believe it doesn’t matter whether you love Sinjin or Rand because both of them hold the power to make you swoon and go giddy at the knees. Wickedly hot men that leave your insides gooey and breathless *sigh*
This is one of those books where I could sit and gush about it for hours because it was such a wonderful read. I loved what I read and I loved how I felt, making it a book I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone. For me, HP Mallory is one heck of a writer because she managed to top a great first book with an amazing second one and I can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeves for Jolie, Rand and Sinjin. With the way my heart beat in Toil and Trouble I know it’s going to be incredible. Happy reading!!
A side by side comparison with 50 shades of Grey, anything that makes a feeble attempt not to suck will be the clear winner. Although I personally wouldn't give either series any trophies. But I digress..
*Here be spoilers* Jolie is going through the regular things a Mary Sue goes through. Men fighting over her, vying for her attention, repeatedly forcing their company onto her..etc.
However things aren't working out with Rand. So naturally circumstances would have her turn to Sinjin for help with training for the oncoming war. Cue love triangle..
Things develop between them until one time, out of the blue, in a blinding epiphany Jolie decides she likes him!
Her way of explaining the sudden twist in her wildly unpredictable affections? "she'd been keeping her feelings for him bottled up. Even from her own self"
And because nothing is ever simple in the world of a prevailed upon MarySue, Jolie has another one of her lightning-strike realizations and decides that she doesn't trust Sinjin.
Whose blood she's regularly been drinking over the course of this book.
When Jolie and Rand decide to patch up their relationship(via telepathy!), Jolie has her first opportunity to act like a big girl and make an adult decision about who she wants to be with.
But instead of allowing her character to grow as a person, the author gives Jolie an easy way out. By having Sinjin behave like a complete asshat!
Regardless of my personal feelings about him, you can't spend a book and a half building someone up to the nice guy then have him turn into a complete nut job over the course of one rage inducing paragraph
It shows lack of respect for your characters.
"I felt like I was watching a movie. The hard coldness of Ryder's back met me as I drove the stake into his flesh with all the strength I could muster. For one moment he stood there, shock in his eyes. Then he suddenly exploded"
As to how she knew there was shock in his eyes while she was standing behind him, that remains unexplained
'The woman smiled suddenly, as if just realizing she‟d never introduced herself. “I am Mercedes Berg."
Gosh that sounds so thoroughly like Mercedes Benz!
The last few pages of the book were its only re deeming qualities and only they are the reason for the second star.
Jolie Wilkins is a witty, sarcastic psychic. Well, until she found out she's a witch and her power is so strong she can reanimate otherworldy creatures. Now she's a witty, sarcastic witch who's about to join forces with her beloved Rand. A war is being waged between the faeries, vampires, werewolves, and witches. But is Jolie biting off more than she can chew?
I. Could. NOT. Put. This. Book. Down! I had the first book in this series in my TBR pile for entirely way too long. Once I read Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble, I knew I would immediately pick up the next books in the series. (Seriously, after this review is written I'm cracking open Witchful Thinking) This book picks right up where the first left off, and immediately sucks you in. It's chocked-full of superb character development, a thick plot, and a juicy love triangle.
The characters and the hilarious banter are what makes Ms. Mallory's books special. She has a way of making you laugh out loud at all her jokes, even when laughing out loud makes you look a little crazy. Jolie is one of my favorite characters in any book. Sure, she cries a lot. Wouldn't you if you were thrust into a strange new world?
I'd be lying if I didn't admit the lust triangle between Jolie, Rand, and Sinjin isn't incredibly entertaining. Tasteful triangles are hard to pull off, but like everything else - Ms. Mallory has done so perfectly. Although, I am wondering where this book will leave Sinjin and Jolie in book 3...
A wonderful book, which I cannot do justice with my review. (That, and I am really itching to crack open the next book!)
It'd be nice if Jolie would take a second to a) figure out what her great, amazingly strong powers everybody keeps talking about are and b) work it out with the men. For somebody who didn't date before she figured out she was a witch, there are a loooot of Underworld boys sniffing around her (literally in some cases).
Toil and Trouble takes off where the first book, Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble left off. Jolie had just dueled with Dougal, champion of the fairy king Odran, in order to win thier allegiance against Bella, the big bad bitch and her minions. Thankfully, she won. But, in order to do so, she had to take in much of Dougal's negative energy and use some of her own life force. It not only put her in a coma for three days, but after waking from it, left her incapacitated. While she was resting and waiting to regain her strength, Rand had assembled thier allies to Penlham Manor and was overseeing the preparations for the upcoming war. Among those allies was the sexy and suave vampire, Sinjin, who much to Rand's chargin, had more than a passing interest in Jolie. While bedridden, Jolie was attacked by one of Bella's minions, a werewolf who had hidden among the allies. In order to prevent her from turning, Sinjin had to suck the wound. This was an intimate act that pleased Sinjin, aroused and confused Jolie, and pissed off Rand. When Sinjin healed the werewolf bite, he also managed to return her strength and heal her completely.
Unfortunately, while Sinjin was making every effort to get closer to Jolie, Rand kept pulling away from her. First, Rand left her hanging during a very intimate moment, then he refused to let her participate in the war. He was afraid of her being in danger...Men can be dumbasses! She was at the core of the war...of course she was in danger, no matter what he did. *rolls eyes*. When he forbade her from the war, she was not a happy girl. She swore off anything with a penis. As far as the war went, she had her own reasons to enter it and wasn't going to be left out. She secretly turned to Sinjin for help. Naturally, as Jolie and Sinjin worked closely together, a war of another kind was brewing between Sinjin and Rand.
I loved Jolie's character. Even bedridden, she still maintained her straight forward, blunt and fantastic spirit. I loved that although she was a witch, she had very human thoughts. Her time rehabilitating, gave her the time to reflect on her relationship with Rand. In the first book Rand struggled with his attraction for Jolie. In this book, he struggled with commitment. She just wanted him to accept her...all of her. She loved him, but a girl can only take so much rejection. So, it was completely understandable how Sinjin had begun to appeal to her, the more she was around him. I could understand Rand's perspective, but, I didn't think, he should have prevented his current relationship with Jolie from moving forward, just because of a past love he didn't even remember. Hell, I was just as fustrated as she was with him. I also appreciate Jolie's determination...she was one of the core reasons for the war in the first place. After all it was her talent Bella was determine to control. Not to mention, she wanted a little payback and satisfaction of knowing she killed Ryder...Hell no, she was not going to be left out. I love that she did what she had to, what she knew was right.
Overall, Toil and Trouble is an amazing balance of love and war. There was never a dull moment and plenty of surprises. In this book, feelings were questioned, time was tavelled, truths were revealed, and war was fought. As I finished reading the book, the romantic complications for Jolie and Rand looked like they were finally resolved....but, with the unpredictability of H.P. Mallory, one never knows. The author has an uncanny ability to satisfy the reader, by blending action, magic, love, time-travel, and battle into a wonderfully coherant and entertaining story. Not to mention, she taunts the reader with a teasing last word... making them eagerly anticipating the next installment. If you're a fan of urban fantasy and paranormal romance that is light hearted and fast paced, then I think you will like this series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is the second in series and the continuing story of Jolie, a new witch who can bring the dead back to life. A mere six months ago, Jolie was happily reading tarot cards in her shop, blissfully unaware of the Underworld creatures ... ya know, vampires, ghosts, werewolves, shapeshifting witches, Scottish Fae people in kilts, demons and etc. Not only did she not know about them, she didn't know she was one of them -- a witch, a quite powerful and unique one.
"One thing I’d learned about the otherworldly is they’re a randy bunch…" and they all want Jolie, well they want her power and to have sex with her.
HP Mallory's stories are refreshing and hilarious. Some really funny lines in this one: "Unbelievable! Why was it impossible for me to get laid? Recently it seemed the most action I’d gotten had been at my last pap smear ... If there were such a thing as blue balls for women, I had them bad." "Maybe I took Odran for granted but it was only because he regarded me as nothing more than a bun for his hot dog."
The story picks back up just after Jolie's battle with the fairy under the watchful eye of Odran, the fairie king who has promised his help in the war against Bella if Jolie is able to defend herself.
Rand, warlock, is still "male beauty personified". Sinjin is still his gorgeous vampire self. Trent and Odran are there as well gearing up for the war with Bella and her forces. And they all still want Jolie.
Think of the battle as being something like Twilight Saga: Eclipse on a much larger scales with witches, wizards and Fae along with the vamps and werewolves. Only here Bella wants Jolie for her slave.
Jolie suddenly finds herself thrust back into Rand's past in the middle of the battle and find out something very important. I figured this twist with Rand in advance but it is a very good one.
This is another quick and fun read. This story ends with the action continuing again in the next book with more up in the air. I'm eager to see how Jolie deals with it.
If you like Molly Harper's vampire and werewolf series, you'll definitely like Mallory's series.
Can't wait to read the sequels to this and Mallory's other series: Great Hexpectations (Dulcie O'Neil, #3) which was just released Oct 2011 and Witchful Thinking (Jolie Wilkins, #3) coming in Feb 2012.
I read the second book in the Jolie Wilkins series by H.P. Mallory, “Toil and Trouble “ on the Kindle. Like the first one, “Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble,” which I also reviewed, it didn’t disappoint. This installment picks up right where the last one left off- with a pending war and a seemingly unrequited love. I was a little concerned at first because the beginning was moving just a little too slow for me. But within the first few pages, Mallory picks up the pace and doesn’t let up until the end.
Blurb from Amazon:
"After defending herself against fairy magic, Jolie Wilkins wakes to find her world turned upside down—the creatures of the Underworld on the precipice of war. The Underworld is polarized in a battle of witch against witch, creature against creature, led by the villainous Bella, who would be Queen. While Jolie has one goal in mind, to stake the vampire, Ryder, who nearly killed her, she also must choose between the affections of her warlock employer, Rand, and the mysteriously sexy vampire, Sinjin. And as if that weren’t enough to ruin a girl’s day, everything Jolie knows will be turned inside out when she’s thrust into the shock of a lifetime."
“Toil and Trouble” was just a little heavier on the romance (and somewhat graphic sex scenes, which don’t bother me but I thought I should provide fair warning for those easily bothered by that sort of thing) than the first book, but again she worked it into the storyline flawlessly, never making me feel like I was reading a romance novel. Mallory writes in such a fun, easygoing voice. While the books are in first person, she doesn’t force her reader to sit through page after page of annoying, angst-ridden inner monologues. The dialogue is natural and witty and the characters are well-developed early on.
I just read on Twitter that there is going to be a third book in the series. Yay! This one ended in a way that suggested a sequel, but also tied up a few of the major loose ends. I’m also looking forward to “To Kill a Warlock,” her first book in another series. If you enjoy Urban Fantasy with a a little more than a twist of romance, I really think you’ll enjoy H.P. Mallory.
Honestly, this was a decent second book, but there was a glaring issue. Like the first book, TAT, Jolie once again spent too much time on the looks of all the men around here, even judging them by their looks this time. Like I said in my review for TAT, it's fine to think about now and again, but doing it this much just got in the way of the story, and was just plain ridiculous and uncomfortable (I don't need to hear how sexy Rand's legs are Jolie X_X). It was just too much. I will admit the last quarter of the book threw me for a f***ing loop. It just was so unexpected, yet I also couldn't picture this book going any other way. The twists that went on in said last quarter also were genius/threw me for a loop. I loved every minute of it.
Jolie definitely had some good growth, despite some childishness that she exhibited. I've already addressed the issue about how she viewed every guy she came in contact with, so I won't repeat it. Her journey was fun to watch, and I loved some of the lines she had. Rand was still wonderful, although he took on a bit of an overprotective persona that got annoying quick. I could tell he truly cared for Jolie, and I loved their relationship and how it evolved. Sinjin was still randy (oh the puns!) as ever, but he definitely had wonderful growth and heart which melted my own heart. I loved him even more in this book, as well as the relationship he shares with Jolie. Some of the other characters, like Odran (Ugh another accent that was hard to understand X_X)took a backseat to the love triangle going on with Jolie, Rand and Sinjin, and just in general didn't really get many moments to shine.
Ms. Mallory once again built up her world, still kept me interested for the most part. I do have to say: Ms. Mallory, please, for the love of all that is good any holy, PLEASE do not include so many descriptions of all the gorgeous men and please do not let Jolie judge the men she meets based on looks. I know there are people who appreciate all those descriptions, but it just took away from a cool story and just was not necessary. Thank you.
As with book one I really enjoyed the wittiness of this tale. I've decided to stop with book two because from all the reviews I've read it's going to take forever for Rand to finally get his girl. Then, it sounds like Jolie is still all goofy for Sinjin. And, one review states that there really isn't a HEA.... Nope, I'm taking it on hear say and leaving right it here. At least in this story I got a smidgen of fire works with Rand and Jolie (and I mean a smidgen).
This isn't the first time I've quit a H.P. Mallory series. I loved the Peyton Clark series first book. I waited for months for book two and was so disappointed in the story. Seems like this author doesn't know how to wrap it up into a nice put together story package.
Toil and Trouble: A Witch Romance Series (Witch, Warlock and Vampire Book 2) ❤️
Toil and Trouble: A Witch Romance Series (Witch, Warlock and Vampire Book 2) ❤️🔥❤️🔥 I am so addicted to this series that I couldn't wait to pick it up my kindle and read every free time every day. Jolie's has character matured in this novel. I feel like I am in the storyline as I read each deliciously written page . I enjoyed the short trip in history and liked how the author brought the story full circle in the aspect of Rand and Jolie. It answered many of my questions about his past. I’m just getting ready to read book 3. I'm curious what happened to Sinjin! I definitely recommend reading 📖 / series 📚
I've been in a serious reading slump. Nothing I'd tried to read for 'fun' around my required school reading was working for me. That is until I picked up Toil and Trouble. How could I forget what a welcoming fresh burst of comedy Jolie and her misadventures were?
Book two in the Jolie Wilkins series begins right where book one, Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble, left off. It's been a while since I've read the first book in the series, and I worried that I might have forgotten some details, but the story is so humorous and charming that it was very easy for me to remember Jolie's world and the two devastatingly handsome men (one warlock, one vampire) vying for her affections.
Because Jolie, witch in training, has a very special and unique gift (she can resurrect the dead), a war has been waged between all the creatures of the Supernatural Underworld. At the head of the evil side is Bella, a witch who plans to take Jolie as her prisoner so that she may have unlimited access to Jolie's powers.
Rand, the delicious British warlock who discovered Jolie, is determined to see that no harm comes to her. And after joining forces with the King of the Fae, Jolie and Rand feel pretty confident that they have a shot a winning the war, if only their pesky attraction towards one another would stop interfering long enough to get them safely to the battle field.
I won't denying that there was a lot of down time in this book where seemingly nothing is taking place, but I saw it as necessary for character development and momentum building. Not only is Jolie preparing for war, she is also warring with her true feelings towards Rand and Sinjin. And as much as I hate love-triangles, I have to say the one presented here is one of the most well executed I have read. Yes, it is completely frustrating, and yes, I wanted Jolie to pick the man I'm in love with (that would be Rand), but getting into her head as she tried to figure out her heart made for emotional, page turning reading.
As Jolie takes the time to really evaluate her feelings, she laces her musings with bits of humor that completely amused me. And when I wasn't enthralled with Rand, stubborn as he is, even I have to admit I enjoyed Sinjin's snarky and dark mannerisms. It is easy to see why Jolie would have a hard time choosing, even as she realizes the situation is far from ideal.
There was a plot twist I hoped would turn out to be what I guessed at, and when it did, I was delighted. I think Mallory did a wonderful job of weaving the storyline together between past and present events. And though I wouldn't call the ending an evil cliff-hanger, I will say that it was too abrupt for my taste, but I have no doubt that answers I seek will be revealed in the next installment, and that is more than fine with me because I'm not ready to let go of the characters.
Again, a few slow bits with a love triangle that will induce eye rolling, but overall, a fun and clever series with enduring characters that I have fallen in love with. Best news, according the H.P. Mallory's website, there will be three more books in the series! *Cheers* But, book 3 won't be available until Spring 2012. *Sobs buckets*
Review taken from my blog: Paromantasy This is a heart-pumping, romance sizzling, tear jerking, mystery filled book that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride, all while sitting (or in my case, jumping up and down) reading! In other words, Toil and Trouble is simply AMAZING! HP Mallory has done what many other authors have tried and failed to do: make a second book of a series that was unbelievable even better! Everything is amplified: the romance, the suspense, the action, and the love triangle between Jolie, Rand and Sinjin literally left me feeling like a ping pong ball, back and forth with still no clear favorite man since they are both great.
Now that my little tirade of verbal book bliss is over, let’s get into what this must-read book is all about! Jolie is a witch who can reanimate the dead and of course, anyone with that much power is going to have a huge target on their head. The underworld is now at the brink of a civil war with Jolie smack dab in the middle of it. Not to worry, she has a bunch of friends from Werewolves to Fae to help her, plus two of the hottest “guys” watching her back. There’s Sinjin, the sexy and mysterious bad boy vampire, and Rand, the incredibly hot warlock with a heart of gold to match, both willing to give their lives for her. As the action intensifies, so does the love triangle between these three. Jolie wants to take her relationship further with Rand, but he’s still holding back since love between a warlock and a witch is essentially a life bond that can lead to near death if your partner should die. He’s not willing to take that risk and she is tiring of the constant torture of loving someone and having all roads lead to nowhere. Then there’s Sinjin who wants nothing more than to go all the way with Jolie. He seems to love her, or at least lust for her, and she can’t deny the attraction, but can she trust him?
With war fast approaching, Jolie is preparing for the inevitable battle since she is a badass herself and wants her revenge on Ryder, the vamp who nearly killed her. Rand wants to keep her out of it, but nothing is going to deter her from seeking vengeance. Of course, nothing goes as plans and the readers are in for a bunch of twists and turns that will have you racing through the pages and leave your heart on the floor with a few curve balls thrown in and a jaw dropping ending.
As many of my readers know, HP Mallory is one of Paromantasy’s favorite authors and is on my “must-read list.” She actually did a Q&A with us last year, where I reviewed Fire Burn and Caulderon Bubble, book 1 of Jolie Wilkins series, and To Kill A Warklock. If you haven’t done so, put these books on you TBR list now!! They are awesome. All my Richelle Mead fans, I know we are sad that VA ended, but these books will pick your spirit right up while we wait for Bloodlines in August.
I thought about giving these books 2 stars but in the end, I'll give them 3 simply because they are such quick reads and they do have their bright spots. Even despite the annoying parts, I found myself wondering what was going to happen next and how Jolie was going to get out of this or that situation, and I could envision the world Mallory was attempting to build rather well even despite her excess of supernatural creatures. And when Jolie isn't being annoying, I like the humor in her first person narrative. But then she becomes the self-doubting witch wrapped up in an implausible love triangle and I just find myself rolling my eyes with impatience.
This book was pretty much a rehash of the first but with a bit more action and a lot more steaminess on the romance front. Everyone is going to war and Jolie just has to go with them despite everyone's objections.
Jolie was less annoying this time around but still annoying. I still feel like the love triangle was the most contrived thing that I have read to date and her relationship with Rand in particular was beyond annoying with the constant "I love you but I can't bond with you" BS. I did like where she went with the whole time traveling wrap up, but after getting to that part, you realize why the whole thing was so darn contrived. She was building everything up just to get to that point.
I'll admit that Mallory does have a talent for story telling. She just needs a bit more work in developing less petulant and irksome characters. Give me a little less daytime soap opera and a little bit more prime time.
As much as I loved the first book in the series, I think that Toil and Trouble managed to be even better! I'm really liking the direction Jolie's relationships with Rand and Sinjin is going. I love that one minute I think she should be with one guy, and the next minute I have changed my mind. It definitely keeps things interesting. Honestly, I am kind of in love with both men myself. Jolie is an amazing character. She is smart, funny, and likes her independence...but for me, the men really make this series. They bring mystery and sex appeal to the story in abundance.
At one point something very major happens (I know that doesn't really tell you much, but I don't want to give it away), and once it does things start to fall into place and let's just say, the plot thickens. There is some pretty good action (of the fighting kind), some very hot situations with each of the men, and lots of magic. In my reader this book is 273 pages. I was so engrossed in reading this book that I finished it quickly. When I reached the end I couldn't believe it. It was left on a cliffhanger and I was so ready to read more. H.P. Mallory has become one of my favorite authors and I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out!
While still a very fun and entertaining read, it's beginning to, I don't know, drag on. I do love a bit of fantasy and romance and reading that is so easy it's ridiculous. I was so excited to find the first one for $1 on my kindle. I blazed through it.
This one was $4 I believe, more than I wanted, but I also wanted to know what was going to happen from the first book.
It was more of the same. More of Rand vs. Sinjin, like any other fantasy romance there's a love triangle. Which is ok! But I guess it's getting old. Especially when there are no choices being made. Just the promise of a choice, which we all k now means it will always be left open...
I don't think I'll read the third one, unless I can get it for $1. I did get a novella for $1 from the series though. It's from Rand's point of view during the second book. That could be interesting. I hope it's not all full of lust and concern for Jolie the whole time though...
Toil and Trouble is the second book in the Jolie Wilkins series by H.P. Mallory. Jolie begins to show more strength of character in this book. She wins the Fae as allies in the supernatural war that is raging, and her powers as an animator of the dead become much more center stage. She also begins to take charge a bit more in her personal life. I loved that we get to learn more about the history of the characters in this book, although book 3 has more. It is another fast paced book, quick to read with lots of action, and very hard to put down. You'll want to get book 3 Witchful Thinking as soon as you are finished so that you can find out what happens next. I love H. P. Mallory's addictive writing style. If you like witches, warlocks, fairies, and vampires, then you will love this book.
Very disappointing. Enjoyed the first one, what happened here?
Spoilers (although the author was the one who spoiled it):
The first book was humorous and entertaining. I was looking forward to more of the same. It seems half of this book was the heroine traveling back in time to see the hero years before. Everything they wear, eat, look at is tediously described, as well as what they get for Christmas, the rooms they walk through, zzzzzzzzzzzz. If she wanted to write a historical romance, there's a genre for that.
So, finally we get back to the war in the present, y'all remember there was a war going on, right? Well, it's magically resolved, end of book.
3.5 for me. This follow up was better than the first in the series and also a lot steamier (not sure if that is a word but I am going with it) I don't really like love triangles especially ones that seem selfish and this one is on the verge of annoying me out of reading the next in the series. Jolie is becoming more defined as a character but there are times that I don't know if there are too big of character shifts to be realistic. These books are quick and fun but don't have much more going for them - good to clean the pallet between heavier books.
The idea behind Mallory's Jolie Wilkins series are interesting. However, the execution leaves me somehow cold. There are plot holes that one might easily drive a semi through, and a great deal of vacillation on part of the heroine. Ms. Wilkins does not understand her own mind, and instead of being conflicted, she just goes with it. I was disappointed in this series, especially after liking To Kill A Warlock so much. Then again, I think that Dulcie O'Neill is a much more developed and multi-faceted character.
The second book in the Jolie Wilkin's series is still stuck right smack dab in the middle only this time, I had to round down instead of up. Jolie's character is slowly gaining some moxie but all the unimportant side stories including a meanduring trip into the past slowed the pace to a crawl in places. Still, the meat of the story is great, and the writing is just plain fun!
I love this author and I love this series. I can't wait until the third one comes out. This book was just as good as the first one, if not better. I just love the characters...Sigh....Rand and Sinjin...in one word...YUMMY :)! The next book I'm going to read is H.P. Mallory's other series To Kill A Warlock and I hope it's just as good.
Jolie was significantly less infuriating in this sequel, hooray! I was recommended to stick with the series and I'm somewhat glad I did. There are still countless things about the heroine that make me want to bang my head against the wall in frustration, but the plot was pretty captivating this time around. Some of the twists were predictable, but they were entertaining none the less. :)
I'm really liking this little series, I like how far Jolie has come in such a short time. Looking forward to the next book to see if she progresses in her relationship with Rand, I'm getting tired of them not being together lol
