The fifth hardcover collection of the Eisner Award-winning comic series as year two comes to a close!
The end of the second year of university is right around the corner for best friends Daisy, Esther, and Susan at Sheffield University. Their glory days of living together are coming to an end, though, as McGraw and Susan plan to move into their own flat, and Daisy’s going against her sensible nature to live in a party warehouse with her tempestuous girlfriend, Ingrid. Adrift on her own, Esther’s stuck scrambling for somewhere to call her own, as the options dwindle down to nothing. At least the others are all squared away, until disaster strikes twice, leaving Ed with broken bones and a bruised ego, and Daisy with a broken heart… The Giant Days Library Edition Volume 5, written by John Allison (Wicked Things, Steeple) and illustrated by Max Sarin (Harley The Animated The Eat Bang Kill Tour), Liz Fleming (Steven Universe), and Julia Madrigal (Lumberjanes) collects the next eight issues of the Eisner Award-winning and Harvey Award-nominated series, along with the 2017 holiday special, all in a deluxe hardcover. Collects Giant Days #33-40.
Last year, I was working through the Giant Steps series and kept getting my inter-library loans cancelled for this 5th volume...but success in 2026. (I would rather have other things working in this broken start to a year.) Glad to finally continue the series. I even had to snap a picture of the PG Tips panel to send to a friend. Fingers crossed that I can get the last two books without another year delay.
Book 5 out of 7 in the Library Editions of Giant Days on my Tackleverse readthrough. A lot happens here, and they're growing up!
This book contains: Looking for living spaces. Esther taking Ed out for a night on the town after he gets her a place; I love that in the flashbacks in this one the art style almost goes back to resembling Allison's more. And then Ed admits he had a crush on Esther and falls off a wall and breaks his ankles and gets a concussion. And then Sarah & Lottie Grote come visit! And Lottie goes around with Daisy first, then with Susan & McGraw, then they all meet Ed in the hospital. Great character, Lottie!
Daisy finally breaks up with Ingrid. Phew. Summer starts... but of course Ingrid drops the bomb on Daisy's grandma, so Daisy is on the move looking for a new place to live, narrowly escaping a cult. She ends up getting in to be an RA and her grandmother makes up with her and it's a very sweet plotline.
Then a fun/nerdy Star Trek "Coby / Ash / Maru Exercise" reference. Susan and McGraw adapt to living with each other and custom furniture, Esther tries to fit in in the boys' house, Daisy works as an RA. Unfortunately, this new artist isn't quite as good. Everything is very cartoonish, heads are weirdly big, and Esther - who's supposed to be a gorgeous goth woman - is drawn like the WB character Freakazoid. I'm glad it does not last.
Anyway, there's a job fair and the future starts being discussed. And Ed comes back home! And starts doing physio with Nina, while Esther feels conflicted about him.
And then a great story where the trio go and visit Shelley Winters in London! And almost get mugged, and Esther visits Shelley at her secret government office job, and they vet Shelley's suitors. Too many suitors! Drama ensues, as well as a look at some complicated adult choices. Good art other than all the mouths being drawn very weird and samey and always wide open.
