For years, her aunt has told her that her mother died. But now, Angel learns her mother was part of a freak show in a carnival and might still be alive. Longing for the truth, Angel joins a carnival in hopes of learning her mother’s fate. There, she is surprised to find people who show her more love than she has ever experienced. As she begins to consider that God may actually care about her, Angel’s steps are dogged by Roland Piccoli, the scion of a notorious New York gangster family who insists he has turned from his family’s ways.
Pamela Griffin lives in Texas with her family. She fully gave her life to Christ in 1988 after a rebellious young adulthood and owes the fact that she’s still alive today to an all-loving and forgiving God and to a mother who steadfastly prayed and had faith that God could bring her wayward daughter “home.” Pamela’s main goal in writing Christian romance is to help and encourage those who do know the Lord and to plant a seed of hope in those who don’t.
3 stars because I totally expected this book to be cheesy and boring. I only had bought it because it was on the clearance shelf. I've read other books from this company, that were not enjoyable because they were very cheesy and boring. Such a pleasant surprise. I kind of want another book about Roland and Angel...
Great book, my favorite quote is: “in order to stay strong, I must face the day so that the shadows are behind me…When you face the sunlight, shadows fall behind you. It was her way of saying not to live in the past or dwell on where you’ve been.” This is a great addition to the family that I’ve come to enjoy since reading Pamela’s book “In the Secret Place”
The book opens with the main character learning everything about her life that she never knew before, all because of a silly argument with her cousins who accused her of hoarding all the attention men in their town gave her. There's no buttering this review any further, to be honest. The book wavered between being slightly entertaining and, unfortunately for the bigger part, slow-paced and rather uneventful. I didn't get to feel that emotional connection with the characters, and I could predict them and what was going to happen to them too easily. I don't mind predictable sometimes, especially if you build up to what is destined to happen, but if there is no build-up, everything just falls flat. The premise is interesting--carnivals and freak shows, but it would have been nice of that could have been incorporated more in the book, along with Roland's family, who happens to be one if the most notorious gangs. That part was even more unsatisfactory because it ended so abruptly. I mean, you don't become a "notorious" gang for giving up when you see that there is a snake man in the carnival and one tough lady who warns you off her property. Overall, it was okay, but so much more could have been done.
This is a nice inspirational fiction book set during the Great Depression. No great literary work, but an enjoyable read, especially as it was a free Kindle download.
