Bride of the Sea King

Rate this book
I kissed the King of the Sea, so he made me his bride.

He's offering me everything I could ever want. Good food. A castle. Immortality. Endless numbers of books to read.

But in exchange, he expects to breed me.

His people are dying out, and they want me to help boost their numbers.

When I immediately refuse, he doesn't protest or try to force me.

Instead, he decides to win my heart with every bit of power he possesses.

The more I argue with him, the harder he fights. And the harder he fights, the more I want to give in.

I'm the sea king's bride… and if I can't stop falling in love with him, I'm going to lose myself in him entirely.

This book was a fun and quick read. I adore most of the books written by Lola Glass and this one was a highlight as well. She is one of these authors who can create amazing fantasy worlds easily and as a reader you feel every emotion through the pages.
The plot was interesting and thrilling with some twists and turns. Mostly it‘s a romcom and I laughed a lot.
Aria and Triton are a perfect match. He is obsessed with Aria pretty quickly and she learns to love him as well. Their banter was hilarious and both characters felt real and relatable.
Overall this was a silly, little fantasy romance with likeable characters and a great love story.
I hope Lola will write more books in this world cause I‘m curious.

A cute Lola glass story, similar to her others but I found this one lacking in plot and feeling connection to the characters. Felt a little surface level to me

i don’t usually like mermen/pirate/ocean stories, but since it's Lola Glass and I love almost everything she writes, I gave it a chance.
Well, I really liked it. The only part I didn’t like was the rushed ending and I would have loved a bit more plot with the selkies but I loved the rest.
Glass’ books are always the perfect bag-of-chips-like stories, that you read in one go. It's not the most nutricious but it's always super satisfying and a perfect snack overall.

I’m a DNF for this. It’s disappointing in its similarity to a lot of her other work, which I loved. And the part where he kisses her and that’s the marriage and it’s all out of her control and that’s icky

3.5 stars rounded up because I love Lola, and after reading her author note at end I absolutely understand why her writing feels a little different lately. Love that she’s in a place where fluffy and happy are what she’s feeling.

Was it a little messy sometimes? Sure, but I think that’s because this was a new world and this is book one in a new series. Of course it’s going to feel a little messy up front as we learn what’s going on and get our bearings.

So let’s get into it shall we?

I’ve been a bit rough in my reviews lately (unhinged, I’ve been unhinged) but that’s not happening with Lola. So prepare for sweet words and sighs of contentment.

Bride of the Sea King is book one in what promises to be an interesting fantasy romance world. Humans were minding their business when these magical, powerful, and immortal beings called “Alts” show up looking for brides to replenish their populations after a long war. This sort of shit has the potential to send me into a tizzy sometimes, because I get so tired of women being used as pawns. But my rage can be negated if the males worship the ground their mates walk on and treat them like strong, independent individuals with agency. Which is absolutely the case in this book.

Aria gets called to the beach one day to wait in a long ass line to see if she’s going to be chosen as a bride. This is a common occurrence in the human world, and she takes it all in stride and expects to be sent right back home. But instead she’s chosen by the sea king, who kisses her and transports her to his realm, the home of his kind known as merrae.

And just like that they’re married! Aria is like…really chill about all of this. I tell myself she’s just in shock, and surely some personality will come around when she comes to her senses! And luckily this is exactly what seems to happen when people start to mention breeding. Girl is like “wait I am absolutely NOT a walking incubator” and her new husband is all “you’re my queen in every way and I would never force you to have babies, so let’s seal this mating and find some birth control ok?”

Because the sea king, Triton, was not about to have his woman treated like a pawn. Sure, he was possessive of her because he’d never had a thing in his life that was JUST for him. Ever. But he worshipped the ground Aria walked on from the start of their relationship. He took his time, didn’t pressure her into sealing their mating bond, and was just generally a good fucking guy. Honestly? He was one of the best MMCs I’ve had the pleasure of reading in a long time. He was well-read, kind, caring, encouraging of Aria and her independence as she learned about her new powers, and apparently had a GIANT sea cucumber. So 10/10 for this guy.

So the story progresses, the two of them get closer, the selkies stir up some shit, and we learn a lot about this new world and the previous war and resulting conflicts. It’s interesting enough, and I was really happy to see Aria come into her own and really flex her new, supernatural powers. I am a simp for character growth if you haven’t caught on. The ending was really sweet and empowering at the same time. And it left me eager to read about the other kinds of immortals in this world.

It did drag in a few places, and it’s not going to be a repeat read for me, thus the 3.5 stars. But it was good! It left me happy, content, and wanting my own merrae with a giant tail. The spice was 🌶️🌶️🌶️ and the orgasms were plentiful. A gal could do worse.

Yes this is a 5⭐ read for me and it should be for everyone. I have finally got out of my one month reading slump. I had such an amazing time reading this book and I believe I started it at 2am (idk why but I felt like it) and it was a super fast read.

I had so many reactions while reading this and my first is that I knew it was really breading focused which I don't mind, but oh man I could kiss Triton for not forcing Aria into the whole repopulating the Merae folk. This man is the definition of putting in the effort, he tried his best to convince Aria that he can give her a life she's always wanted if she stays and remains his queen, HE LITERALY YEARNS FOR HER LOVE. THIS MAN JUST WANTS TO BE LOVED AND APPRECIATED. Triton is such a sweetheart.

Aria is such a strong character which is nice to see in books like this because I don't know how I feel about extremely docile women. She adapted to the culture of the sea kingdom so well and she can shift into her mermaid tail AND she will become stronger than Triton over the years. I was so glad that Aria got a chance to befriend the other women that were also taken from Earth and brought to the sea kingdom to help repopulate, she finally got to make connections and have people that she could trust, ask questions and relate to, she never had to feel alone and Triton never made her feel such.

Also I felt like Triton is a fan of Pretty Little Liars, I mean I bet he had nothing too important to deal with while being king and not having the ability to be with anyone or even having a queen by his side, I just know that this man is a PLL stan. He said something that made it come to fruition for me to believe this theory, he said "That's immortality, sweetheart" which automatically makes me think of Alison saying "That's immortality, my darlings"

For a breeding specific book, I really loved it!! Triton is all for his queen being a QUEEN! Shes not a womb or brood mare. She is their queen in every freaking way. I love Aria. She takes to it like a fish to water. No pun intended. She encompasses everything being a queen means. She protects her people, loves them, and puts them in their place when needed. While the book is short for a relationship to build, this author did it and did it well. Aria not only became a strong and beautiful queen but she became a true wife and mate. I cant wait to read more from this author.

“Bride of the Sea King” by Lola Glass is a spicy paranormal romance between Triton, the Sea King of Alterrae, and Aria, his human 25-year-old SoCal bride. Glass identifies this book as a “True Standalone,” although she may return to Alterrae with more stories someday!

Aria is studying to be an accountant and delivering food to make ends meet when she gets the call to line up on the beach to meet an “Alt”- a magical being from Alterrae. As a result of a world war, their populations are running low, and it is believed they are drafting Earth women to rebuild the population. After almost a day waiting on the beach, she stands in the water when her eyes are drawn to a tall figure coming from the waves. Her fate is sealed with a kiss, and she’s taken to the world of Alterrae, where her Sea King husband intends to seal their bond and eventually populate their kingdom. Will Aria accept her place beside Triton as the Queen, or will tradition hold her back, binding her to a future of breeding?

Although we’ve only been given a glimpse of Alterrae, Glass created an enchanting world that someone could easily immerse themselves in. The landscape, design, and fashion of the merfolk are both inventive and beautiful. I picture a white sandy beach in Spain with colorful Sarongs and gorgeous merpeople. I mean…I’d hate to watch Triton go, but I’d love to watch him leave.

“Bride of the Sea King” is a sexy and cozy love story for someone who just wants romance with a little bit of drama. The relationship between Triton and Aria was ✨ chefs kiss ✨. Triton’s respect for Aria was sweet, and his respect for her wishes despite his people’s impressions was admirable. His dream for her to be “more” was everything. There is no major drama or third-act breakup. The steam in this book was steamy! I would put this book at a 🌶🌶🌶.5 spice level. Glass turns up the heat! THE ENDING, BY THE WAY! Ms. Glass. Ma’am. I pterodactyl screamed. TWO?! BOTH?! AHHHH!

I’ll miss Alterrae. I’ll miss the merfolk, the magic, the romance, the fantasy…and Triton’s 🍑.

Full of passion

Even though the characters are thrown together immediately, the development and changes are a pleasure to experience. I enjoy the time that is taken to develop things fully and not leave any loose ends. Great conflict resolution as well!!

Bride of the Sea King de Lola Glass

Argumento:

3.5 stars (rounded up)

I love Lola Glass and read everything she puts out. Lately, it does feel like her writing is a bit repetitive and similar to her last series but again, I like her writing so I wasn't disappointed in it.

Bride of the Sea King is book one in a new fantasy romance series, and while it’s a little messy at times, I think that’s due to it being the first book in a whole new world. Her leading FMC was a little bit hard for me to like, at first she was great then it just seemed like her entire personality was a little flat. She fought where she was and who she was becoming "just because".

Aria is chosen as a bride for the Sea King, Triton, a powerful and immortal being humans call an "Alt". Tritons people are essentially mermaids but there's many others in this world so I'm sure the author will introduce more. She’s chill about it (probably in shock), but things take a turn when she learns about the expectation of breeding for the good of the kingdom. Aria quickly makes it clear she’s not a walking incubator, and Triton, being the absolute dreamboat that he is, immediately assures her that her agency is important to him. They bond, and the relationship is genuinely sweet and empowering.

Triton is everything—he’s protective without being possessive, worships Aria, and lets her grow into her new powers. Plus, he’s a good guy (and apparently has a GIANT sea cucumber that grows into TWO when Aria is in heat, so there's that).

I also really enjoyed the fact that when human women are brought over into magical world, they themselves become Alt's without losing their humanity. It was a fresh change of pace rather than humans never quite fitting in because they're "powerless", they actually become powerful too.

The world-building is intriguing, and I loved Aria’s character growth, but the story did drag a bit in places. The ending was satisfying, though, leaving me eager for more from this universe.

The spice? 🌶️🌶️🌶️

All in all, it’s a solid start to the series. Not a repeat read for me, but it left me content, and I’m definitely curious about the other immortals in this world.

“I have ached for a mate for hundreds of years— and now that I have you, I will never let you go.”

This book was sooo good. Like, I've been in a book slump for a while but this book was exactly what I needed.

In typical Lola fashion the world building and level of detail was just perfect. The imagery of where the merrae lived and what they looked like came to life so easily.

The MCs Triton and Aria were so likeable. Triton especially was this cocky little marshmallow who had been dying of loneliness for the sake of his kingdom for centuries. I loved him to pieces. And Aria was very relatable and I appreciated that her thoughts and reactions were quite reasonable but also not too over dramatic when learning she was suddenly mated and married to the sea king and the expectations of breeding with him. It was just the right amount of emotion needed for such change without creating a huge barrier between the two for additional conflict, which thankfully didn't exist between them.

They were super cute together and I just adored how Triton saw Aria and how he treated her. She was quite literally everything he had ever wanted in life and it was just too precious to watch play out.

The scenery was popping, the MCs were likeable, the plot was intriguing and opened a new world for future stories. It was filled with sarcasm and humor, and best of all? The chemistry and sexy times between the two MCs was smokin' just the way I like em. 🥵

Absolutely cannot wait for more stories from this world. ❤️

“You can be confident without being full of yourself.”

“If someone’s going to be full of me, Sweetheart, it’s you.”

“You are so full of yourself.”

“You’re still the only one who gets that privilege.”

Cute, cozy, campy-style humor. ‘Bride of the Sea King’ is an enjoyable three+ hour read, that has almost equal measures banter, bicker, spice, and camaraderie. The battles aren’t bloody, but the spice is hot.

Sea King Tipton and Human Aria are equally matched, and very well suited. Side characters are secondary in nature and not focused upon more than a few paragraphs. With the main focus remaining on the MCs, where they are more than capable to carry this entertaining story.

Okay if you know anything about Lola Glass books you know the craziness will grab you and you will not be putting her books down until the last page has been turned finding yourself turning it again just to be sure it is the last page. Aria, our 25-year-old human, is a hot mess to begin with in the best way possible studying to be an CPA, working as a DASH driver when a call comes to the beach and waiting for a while to be chosen as a bride/breeder shifting her path forever. Triton the sexy as all get out Sea King a magical being from Alterrae needs human women to help with there matting, the repopulation of their home but he went to the human women mainly because he was lonely and meeting the one he choose as his bride but she isn’t okay despite taking it all in stride or shock until breeding is mentioned of course she is ready to head home she isn’t a baby making machine …no thank you and he shows he decides to win her heart before winning babies so to speak. Triton is one of the best book boyfriends ever he shows her that she is his queen the world begins with her she is his and for the first time he has something that is his but will he win her heart, will he show her that he is worth taking a chance on, will she see the man not the king, will she see all that he is offering her, and will she find happiness in his world?

Aria is one of the women chosen to show up before sunrise, because she is between the age of 18-40 and the alts were looking for mates. She didn’t think she would be chosen and that she spent the day there, exhausted and hungry. Finally, someone spoke up and one of the guards told the alts that humans needed to rest, and eat, etc. Finally, she was in the water and a man came out of it, absolutely gorgeous and he was very close to her. She was shocked because she didn’t have the body type that the alts usually chose, plus, she had a lot of tattoos. But, she accepted his kiss and everything is total mischief and mayhem after that. Alts have very different rules that humans don’t know about and should. Now she is the bride to the Sea King, Triton and goes through a Portal and things get more weird for her by the minute. I found the world to be fascinating and can’t wait to learn even more about it. Aria argues with Triton a lot, but her body language tells him differently, and that she accepts him. Problems arise and politics ensue. She gets aggravated and meets others like herself- other human brides. Besides the merfolk, there are selkies causing problems. Since selkies can go from humanoid form to seals, they can cause problems for the merfolk. Triton’s sister, Rayna is grumpier than he is, which is saying something, lol. I loved this book and I can’t wait to see what happens next. The magic and fight scenes in this book were phenomenal! OMG. It was like watching a show. I giggled a lot and things got steamy and romantic too. I loved seeing all the little ones in it and how Triton was with them. Soooo cute.

I am a lover of romance books especially paranormal romance especially when they combine "found family” and action in to the story. Bride of the Sea King offered a little bit of everything.

We meet Aria on literally the craziest day of her life, on a beach ready to meet a supernatural who is going to abduct her. While the story moved quickly I did feel like I understood the world of Alterrae. I enjoyed seeing that Triton wasn't who Aria expected him to be. In her own words “Triton was a marshmallow. A huge, gorgeous, sexy marshmallow. And I was absolutely here for it.”

I enjoyed seeing the way they resolved arias concerns about the power dynamic with no question. Triton makes it clear how he sees her even if not to her directly initially. We see Aria develop and gain her strength and respect independently.

I do wish we had more back story especially more on the many fascinating side characters like Joa. The parts I loved most were ALL Triton. He loves whole heartedly and cares so deeply for Aria. Plus I mean... Sexy merman? Sold.

Overall I would recommend this as a quick read, palate cleanser. It was an easy spicy enjoyable read! Content warnings include pregnancy & loss of a parent (not on page).

I loved it!

Warning: Suitable for 18+ readers. Scenes of very spicy sexual content that are shown on the page. Readers who may be sensitive to this, please be aware.

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This is a spicy standalone romance with a happily ever after. She kissed the King of the Sea, so he made her his bride. He's offering her everything she could ever want, good food, a castle, immortality, and endless numbers of books to read, but in exchange, he expects to breed her. His people are dying out, and they want her to help boost their numbers. When she immediately refuses, he doesn't protest or try to force her, instead, he decides to win her heart with every bit of power he possesses. The more she argues with him, the harder he fights, and the harder he fights, the more she wants to give in. She’s the sea king's bride, and if she can't stop falling in love with him, she’s going to lose herself in him entirely. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.

sweet and fluffy - really enjoy mermaids and love Tritan

I liked it! Pretty unique in some aspects (immortality, Aria changing from a human to a mer, etc). Really loved Tritan and Aria as a couple.

I like the world building the author did.

I do feel like this could have been edited a bit more with solid descriptive details and longer - the writing leaves gaps for the reader to just fill in, instead of being written out in detail. It’s easy to do this an author when you’ve got everything mapped out in your head - but the characters and the reader are experiencing it as it happens and for the first time, so details matter.

Examples Like - Aria changing her tail to human legs under water (what was that like? We don’t know it’s never described, what is it like having a tail and bigger lower body, do their eyes adapt to underwater, what’s it like being a mer, etc), Tritan changing his legs to a tail but no mention on it at all, the under water city but it’s on an island above ground??, etc.

The breeding part is brought up a lot but then it’s not really focused on in the end (properly 🌶️ wise), even though its made to be a big deal, especially learning how it’s supposed to be conducted etc

Different but really good!!!

H: Triton: King of the Sea (Alterrae/Alt)
h: Aria Christene Weathers: Human Female
The King of the Sea asked for all females between the ages of 18-45yrs old to line up and be seen by the king. Unsure for what but Arie a struggling college student lined up and was there for over 24hrs waited to be seen, unsure exactly what for. After losing her mom and giving her inheritance to her beat up dad in order for him to leave her alone, she was truly alone. She was the tenth group of people when she was called in and immediately she felt a tug/feeling and he kissed her. Later we find out that by accepting his kiss she is now his bride. He "abducted" her and took her to his kingdom/sea world. There she learned to be one of his people ( "Marrae"). She realized he has had a very lonely life being a king w/out a mate. And when the time comes where they lose more than half of their population due to a war they won. Marrae realizes he & his people need to find a mate in the human world (earth) in order to populate their world. This is really different and I'm very surprised I liked it so much!!! Can't wait to find out what Lola writes next.

Bride of the Sea King was a great standalone romance story. This author knows how to create a world that is captivating and intriguing. I devoured this story from beginning to end but I wanted just a little more in the epilogue. Triton, the King of the Sea is an alt and with their population slowly dying, they are in search of mates to breed. Aria is one human among many summoned to stand and wait to see if a match is made. She knows she won't be picked as she's completely different from those chosen before her. However, fate has other plans and not only is she chosen but she changes as much as the world around her. I don't want to give anything else away, but I will say that this story is full of sweet, steamy and laugh out loud moments, but there's also betrayal, action, enemies, threats, war and so much more. I wish there was just a tad bit more in the epilogue to read about that special moment happening but that didn't take away from how much I enjoyed this story. It's a story I will be recommending to my paranormal romance friends and one I will enjoy reading again.

Kind of meh if I'm being honest. The whole story feels kind of surface level and you don't feel the connection between the leads at all. Aria is kind of boring and a bit of a Mary Sue (hot, beautiful, scales the right color, has powers right away, learns easily etc.) and Triton had no personality aside from being hot... also, the smut was stale IMO and half the time they hook up, she's in her tail form, but without warning we're told she's in her legs randomly. Took me out tbh.

Lastly, the whole meeting / romance was dumb to me. we're told that the mer people are basically aliens / monsters who took over earth and basically use the women as chattel. Aria is made to wait in a line for hours, stand in freezing water and then she gets kissed by the king without consent..... except, we're told that the mer people never kiss as it's a mating bond. So Triton (cliche name) basically goes up to some random girl and picks her as queen for no reason and that's supposed to be romantic? then there's the nickname - he calls her sweetheart which does not feel "sea-ish" and makes me roll my eyes

I will always love Lola Glass and the book wasn’t bad but it just wasn’t my favorite. So for my rating it’s 3 stars but a low 3 bc I had to force myself to finish it today to write the review. It was my first ARC read and I was very excited to be able to do it bc as I’ve said many times, I love Lola Glass. That said, I was disappointed in the book. I absolutely loved Triton but there was something about the story and Aria that wasn’t my favorite. It was both too slow and too quick, but I don’t know how to describe that. Not a lot happened to make it feel like it should be a complete standalone but it also ended nicely so it doesn’t feel like there needs to be more. I think people are going to love it and they should because it is a good book, but I couldn’t get into it like I have previous ones. I think it being a true standalone threw me off bc I love her interconnected standalones so it’s just something I have to get used to.

He's determined that she'll accept him as her mate

Another fantastically fun story by Lola Glass; with drama, wonderful characters with sweet chemistry between them, heaps of humor and spice. Great for a cozy read & I would strongly recommend.

When Aria is chosen by the King of the Seas to be his bride and taken back to his world she has a lot to get used to. Her body is being changed by the magic of her new world but she knows she's just there for him to breed and isn't happy about it.

Triton didn't get a vote when his people decided he needed a bride but once he finally found one he was happy with he was determined that she would be his Queen. He just needs to convince her of that and keep her safe from the selkies.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
