what it says on the tin lol. the photos are absolutely beautiful and most of the recipes are straightforward. there are a few formatting issues on the recipes where the type is set too close together, but perhaps that has been fixed in any subsequent printings. you'll also want to pay close attention to the yield, as it varies drastically from recipe to recipe. the chapter categories they chose felt a little confusing/arbitrary to me at first, but actually, it's set up well for anyone who just wants to quickly pick out a crowd-pleasing drink suitable for their specific occasion. the book is definitely geared towards entertaining in its layout and tone, which i didn't realize before borrowing, but ended up coming in handy over the winter holiday season.
while the majority of recipes did not appeal to my personal tastes (jell-o shots get their own chapter), i still found several i'm interested to try. the two i did make were nice.
here are the chapter headings for those interested:
1. Classics Done Right 2. Bottomless Brunch 3. Girls' Night 4. Extra Virgin 5. Boozy Bites 6. Summer Daze 7. Fall Forward 8. 'Tis the Season
so, it isn't an all-encompassing introductory book, but that isn't what it's trying to be. it's got ~100 fairly easy recipes ready to go, all with stunning accompanying photos, laid out very simply. if you're already a little familiar with mixing drinks, i could see this being a good one to grab just to have a basic cocktail resource on-hand for entertaining purposes, especially since it has plenty of batch-size recipes, and also includes a non-alcoholic chapter. some of the recipes could also be good jumping-off points for experimenting with your own little tweaks, like the "raspberry mimosa floats" or "rosemary gin fizz." others feel uber-specific to themed events, like the "sugar cookie martini" or "s'mores pudding shots."
it's a fun little collection of recipes, although i won't be purchasing a copy once my library loan is due. largely because the style of drinks isn't for me, and also it just inhabits a strange space for where my mixing skills are. despite being the resident bartender at home lol, i am still a novice. i've realized i am looking for either a detailed resource that will explain the how's and why's to me, or a pared-down book i can use to navigate recipes by spirit. ultimate cocktails is neither. at the end of the day, this book just isn't what i'm looking for- but it might be for you!
I received this book through the Amazon Vine program in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fun book!
There are pictures for each drink/shot and they are beautiful! There's alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks featured in this book which is nice. Some of the drinks are time intensive but these are good recipes. Most of the drinks are fancier than I'd make on a typical night but the book is broken down by event like holidays, brunch, etc.
There's recipes for shots as well as non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks. Most of the drink recipes are for batches so they're easy to scale down.
