A product of it's time. Interesting concepts and decent development of alien lifeforms, their quirks and different takes on the family unit. Character development was underwhelming. Overall was a little drawn out with a predictable set of circumstances from the halfway point.

Lots to recommend it, for example interesting aliens and flexible definitions of family. But I couldn't get interested in the characters, much less their quest, or keep track of the political intrigue (nor ignore it as unimportant, because even though it isn't particularly it still interrupts the main story all too often). I got almost halfway and still feel as if I'm just starting to glimpse what might be going on... and now I see that it's got a sequel. Well, never mind.

An interesting concept, some good characters, but very choppy and hard to follow. It's an intrinsic problem with high sci-fi/fantasy, but not handled particularly successfully this time. I would love to see more stories from this universe, however, that might flesh out some of the more interesting aspects of the cultures and societies that were introduced here.

Picked this book up at Half Price Books on the Clearance rack for $1. I thought it was a good story with good character development, but I thought the writing style seemed simplistic. There was lots of action, and the climax was a great page-turner. Overall, an easy, entertaining read.

Interesting interplay between the different species. This was good reading and I stayed up late to finish it.

Love the cover art of the copy I read and the cross-species romance that ensues. Overall a great, pulpy romp through science fantasy.
