Before there was the fan fiction that became FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, there was The Submissive Trilogy...You've met THE SUBMISSIVE, now meet THE DOMINANT. The second novel in Tara Sue Me's seductive and scandalous Submissive trilogy that has enthralled millions and inspired a genre...Nathaniel West doesn't lose control. As the playboy CEO of West Industries, he governs the boardroom during the day; as a strict dominant with exacting rules, he commands the bedroom at night. He never takes on inexperienced submissives, but when Abigail King's application comes across his desk, he breaks his own restrictions and decides to test her limits. Abby's combination of innocence and willingness is intoxicating, and Nathaniel is soon determined to collar her as his own. As long as she follows his orders and surrenders herself fully to him, no one will get hurt. But when Nathaniel begins falling for Abby on a deeper level, he realizes that the trust must go both ways - and he has secrets which could bring the foundations of their entire relationship crashing down...
Even though she graduated with a degree in science, Tara knew she’d never be happy doing anything other than writing. Specifically, writing love stories.
She started with a racy BDSM story and found she was not quite prepared for the unforeseen impact it would have. Nonetheless, she continued and The Submissive Series novels would go on to be both New York Times and USA Today Bestsellers. One of those, THE MASTER, was a 2017 RITA finalist for Best Erotic Romance.
Now she is focusing on new contemporary romances that allow her the freedom to write and publish on her own schedule.
I seriously cannot get enough of this man! The Dominant is the story of Nathaniel West and Abigail King completely in his point of view. We finally get in Nathaniel's head and what a great place to be!
The Dominant runs along the same timeline as The Submissive but it's almost like a whole different story because we get all the details as to who he is, why he chooses to do the things he does, and how he suffers in silence.....
As a recap, Nathaniel meets up with. Abigail while in search of a new submissive. Little do either of them know they've both had their eye on the other person FOR YEARS. He caught Abby helping a pedestrian who dropped her purse way back while she attended Columbia. He just watched from afar, knowing he had a sub at the time he was loyal to, and that he would never be good enough for her. She was just too good....."normal."
To Abby, Nathaniel was the "banker" that helped prevent her mother from losing her house while being up to her eyeballs in credit card debt. She's always been interested in the BDSM lifestyle, never being truly satisfied in a normal relationship. When the word comes out he's in search for a new sub, she applies. But will he train someone whose never done this before?
Again, being in Nathaniel's head was fantastic. He has so many hidden reasons for why he chooses the agreement he has with Abigail....the no kissing, weekends only, separate bedrooms, relationship ending safe word.....it's all his ploy to maintain his emotional distance from a woman he can't afford to love. You can't be a Dom and a lover to the same person, can you?
So Nathaniel plays the game as long as he can.... Keeping his feelings hidden, his heart secured. It's best for Abigail. She needs him to be the Dom he knows he can be....not the lover he can't. He doesn't do "normal."
Abigail gradually chips away at the walls her Master has built, showing him that there's more deep down than this persona they put on...the scenes they play.
Did I mention I loved getting all my questions answered about Nathaniel West? I thought I loved this alpha controlling man before. Now I swoon for him! He's human after all! All alpha successful, domineering but also a loving son, brother, friend and perfect specimen of man! He does everything for everyone else, his feelings be damned. Bone marrow donor, pet rescuer and all! Omg, there's a part in this book where he asks Abby to come by his house because his dog Apollo can't handle the smell of her on him any longer. The poor dog (and owner)...heart-melting sweet.
I mean, seriously, I thought the first book was hot with the sex scenes in Abby's point of view! Shit! Get inside his head! Lordy! To be on my knees like Abby (did I type that?)......
So, the series, as most of my GR BFFs know, is a serious LOVE for Allison. If you're a fan of the whole FSoG thing, Tara Sue Me delivers in spades.... Why this series didn't beat FSoG to the punch four years ago when she wrote it is BEYOND ME. Bravo! Snail mail, get me the arc of The Training pronto!
Nathaniel West, successful CEO and Dominant, does not lose control. He has a plan for everyone and everything and that's where Abigail King enters the picture. She wants to be Nathaniel's submissive. The problem is she has no experience or training whatsoever.
The second book in The Submissive Trilogy is told solely through Nathaniel's POV and hopefully you've read The Submissive so you know there was something Nathaniel wasn't up front about. I think that was my favorite part...reading all his reasoning’s why, his insecurities and his humanity because he came off being very cold most of the time in the first book. That's definitely not a problem in this book. And who knew he could be sooo funny? It really made me laugh when he was typing to himself!
I did miss Abigail (Abby) even though I had read her story and knew what had happened. There were even some scenes that it felt like I was missing something and realized it was just her. On the other hand, we get sooo much more of Nathaniel that I guess it evens things out.
I really enjoyed the times when Nathaniel was sweating things out. There was a particular punishment that I thought was really hard to read from Abby's POV. That was until I read Nathaniel's...his was sheer torture! And when he suspected her of doing something she wasn't, to read about him deciding what to do or not to do was sooo stressful. But I did like when he worried if she cared for him or not.
It was great getting to read about the closeness of Nathaniel's relationships especially with Jackson and Todd. You could definitely feel how close they were and how much they cared about each other. I was glad that Nathaniel had that because their friendships are really needed towards the end.
I loved finding out the "whys" of certain things that we didn't get in the first book: how Nathaniel came up with the safe word, about his parent's rings and the rose....especially the rose. I just loved that.
The sex is still as steamy but again, I loved it even more reading how Abby affected him. The kissing rule still bothered me even with Nathaniel's reason but at least it was more understandable.
A few of my favorite things were Apollo...my heart went out to him when he could smell Abby on Nathaniel; the poetry...the poetry! As Nathaniel said, "Who knew poetry could be such a turn- on?"; the cooking...I really enjoyed when they would cook for each other and especially when they 'cooked' together; and the library/piano...the best parts...almost.
The big drama was even more heart breaking if that's possible. I thought Abby's POV was bad but Nathaniel's killed me. I was shocked at the depth of it!
I have to say I'm nervous about The Training. I enjoyed reading the excerpt at the end but I'm hoping it's so much more than just BDSM. And I have sooo many more questions that I want answered. *fingers crossed*

The Dominant I am a bit confused as to why reviewers would automatically say that this book is like Fifty Shades of Gray...because it isn't. The Dominant is a companion book to The Submissive. When I received a copy of The Dominant from Netgalley, I immediately ordered The Submissive, and read them side by side. Nathaniel West is a dominant, and Abigail King applies to become his submissive with no experience. While Nathaniel's childhood was tragic, he does have a stable and happy family life, but has willingly taken on the BSDM lifestyle. Both characters have secrets. In The Submissive, the reader hears from Abby's point of view, and Nathaniel tells the story in The Dominant. When read together, the reader gets to hear both sides of a very different coin and learns to empathize with both characters. I think this is a huge difference between these two books and the Fifty Shades trilogy. The reader is also able to understand the obstacles that both these characters have to face and the risks for both.
Nathaniel West is strict and his life borders on an obsessive kind of control; whereas, Abby is genuine and warm. She has to figure out how to give up control for this very dark man she finds compelling. Both characters find out that their own lives were similarly empty before their arrangement, but relationships are not easy for either. How can they navigate the waters of "the lifestyle" vs "love" without losing their own identity?
Know that this is a novel for a mature audience because of the sexual content.
I really won't give my subjective summation about this book as it's basically the same as book 1 (The Submissive) only told from Nathaniel's POV. The same story. The same series of events. The same time frames. The same ending. Nothing new or any surprise story line twists.
While I totally appreciate the insight into Nathaniel's POV I really didn't enjoy rehashing the same basic storyline and same erotica scenes for the price I paid for this book. Sure, there were added bonus footage sections that helped to complete the overall picture, including Paul's involvement, but to write an entire book in this way didn't leave me with warm fuzzy feelings. Even the erotic BDSM play scenes were rehashed without any additional fun.
Considering the price (on Amazon) for "The Submissive" was $5.69 and the price for "The Dominant" (on Amazon) was $8.89 I can't recommend this book to anyone else, especially as the eBooks are non lendable. And I see the price for "The Training" (book 3) which will be released Oct 1 is pre-priced at $8.89. In my opinion just reading book one of this trilogy is enough. Unless you're a really die hard fan and want to know the who, what, when, and how mentality of Nathaniel. Then I guess any price is worth it. For me, the author should have inserted Nathaniel's POV insights into book one OR priced this book more reasonably as paying more to read the same story just isn't cool.
Pre-read: I'm giving this a try, probably against my better judgement, but I did say that I would read it before to see if the series improved at all from it's beginnings. If anyone has the galley and wants to do a read along, let me know. We'll do one together.
Post-read I'll write a more thorough review of this after the holidays, but I just want to say one thing.
Seriously, this trend of writing the same story from a different POV character without offering anything new to the measure of the story and overarching events has got to stop. Not only is it repetitious, but it feels like authors who do this are not only shortchanging their characters but also the stories themselves. Some things are just better left for the imagination. Some stories don't need sequels.
The Dominant is technically not a continuation of the series, but is the male POV of Book one " The Submissive" and I do wish that I had known that before reading book one as I would have read them together and I know that I would have enjoyed them way more. I am not a fan of two books being different POV unless I know beforehand and can read them side by side, but separately, it just doesn't do that much for me (this is just my personal preference, so if you love it when authors do this that bravo, I wish I could). I did find that there are much more details described in this book than in book one and I did enjoy seeing the mystery behind the hero, but after the ending of " The Submissive" I just wanted to continue with their story and not feel like I was doing a male version of a re read haha. So while I appreciate what the author delivered, I just wasn't in the correct mindset to enjoy it like I wanted or needed.
Initial Thoughts: Hmmmm...Not sure how to rate this. 2 stars? 3 stars? I was so annoyed by Nathaniel for most of this, which surprised me because I read this when it was a fanfic and enjoyed it back then. Now, not so much. I'm sure that people who enjoyed Fifty Shades of Grey will love this.
The Review: I was really torn as to how to review this book.
Full Disclosure: I read this series when it was a fan fiction of a popular young adult vampire series. I did enjoy reading it back then. Perhaps it was the novelty of seeing my favorite characters portrayed in a different light. Maybe it was the serialized nature of the series that added a touch of excitement every time a new installment appeared. Maybe it was the thrill to see how the author integrated elements of the original story into her version. I’m not sure. I do know that when a work like this is published by a major publisher, I am expecting more.
I'm looking for character development. The whole time I read this book, I just kept thinking that Nathaniel was a selfish ass. He over thinks everything in his personal life, aims to control everything, and agonizes about Abby in a strangely “stalkerish” way. He’s clearly excited by the prospect of having Abby be his sub, then hands her an almost impossible to follow diet, exercise, and sleep plan. Huh? Controlling much? And even though he is an ass, the author paints him as a philanthropist, running his company without drawing a salary and – get this – he’s even a bone marrow donor for a young boy! This man can do no wrong.
I’m also looking for some sort of reworked story. When a fan fiction is published, I shouldn’t be able to identify elements of the original story. Hmmm…hospital scene, breakup scene, I’m not good for you scene – all there. Yes, I understand that those scenes can be found in every romance, however, there are “millions” of readers who read these stories for free online and are now expected to shell out money for these books. Give them something new.
While there is plenty of creative sex in this book, the lack of intimacy is glaring. OK, perhaps that goes with the tortured hero department. If you are looking for some interesting sex scenes, then yes, there’s some imaginative stuff here. I did find a few scenes a little uncomfortable, notably the scene where Nathaniel punishes Abby for not getting enough sleep. “Run, Abby, run!” I wanted to shout. The other thing that drove me batty was Nathaniel’s need to constantly draw lines about his relationship with Abby. They are snowed in at Stately West Manor and all he can think about is how he is not going to have sex with her because they are outside their weekend arrangement times. ARGH.
The big reveal which the whole book is based upon just drove me batty. What a letdown! I was too busy screaming “So what?” After that horrid punishment scene, Nathaniel agonizes over something so trivial. It was just over the top, dramatic. Oh, the angst!
I must say that the writing is a big improvement over the Fifty Shades books. Chances are if you are a fan of those books and books like Fifty Shades, you will most likely enjoy this book. If you are familiar with the fan fiction surrounding that young adult vampire book, you may also enjoy this.
A note: When I started reading this book, I was a little confused. I thought that I had gotten The Submissive. The Dominant is essentially the same book, only written from Nathaniel’s point of view. So if you’ve read The Submissive, you may suffer from a little deja lù (haven’t I already read this?). I understand that the third book The Training has different material.
Thank you to NetGalley and NAL/Penguin for a review copy of this book.
Come on. Did I get broken book? Really, several times during the read I had to check the title and cover, as well as return to previous book to confirm that I've read the same thing there and now I'm reading it again. What a fuck is the point of this "other POV" stretching through whole book except effortlessly squeezing one more book (clone) out of you and money out of your readers? The Deja Read factor is so high I thought I've mistakenly read this in the past not realizing it's the second book in the series. Turns out, I did read this book already, but it was titled The Submissive (Submissive #1).
can someone point me in the direction of where i can read this? I live in australia and i have just finished the submissive and am desperate to read the dominant and the training but can not find them anywhere?? I am also technology challenged so any direction would be great!! Thank you :)
Maybe it's just me but books from the guys POV always is better...review to come. :-)
“I wanted to pour over her application until I had it memorized. I wanted to make a list of what she had marked as ‘willing to try’ and show her the pleasures of doing those things. I wanted to study her body until its contours were permanently etched in my mind. Until my hands knew and recognized her every response. I wanted to watch her give in to her true submissive nature. I wanted to be her Dom.”
If you have read The Submissive, you already know how this story goes…but reading it from Nathanial West’s point of view (in my very honest opinion) is SO MUCH HOTTER!
While yes, he seems a little hot and cold with how his feelings develop; it doesn’t take away from his passions or how much he truly wants things to work with Abby. Not just as her Dom either, oh no. Nathanial wants so much more from her…
…and because I am a total bookworm, I will share this small tidbit from one of their encounters at the Library:
“Just for my education,” I said, focusing my attention on the curve of her backside, the way it moved as she walked, “does the Rare Books Collection room happen to have a table?” “Yes.” Of course it did. “Is it sturdy?” I asked. “I suppose so.” “Good. Because I plan to have more than books spread out for me.”
LOVE HIM! LOVE THIS BOOK! LOVE THE SERIES! Very much looking forward to Abby & Nathanial’s story continuing in The Training!
I really enjoyed reading the published version of The Submissive but I really struggled with this one. The way it was written was just so unemotional and robotic which isn't a good thing when the author has chosen to write in first person. Nathaniel's POV just felt so stilted which really drained all enjoyment for me.
I basically skimmed the whole book because it was just too repetitive but there were some scenes that I did want to read his perspective. I think the first book in this series should have incorporated both point of views.
I guess the characterisation of Nathaniel bothered me in this more than the first book. I guess it's because I was in his head for this one. But he's just so emotionally unavailable throughout this, and he's so strict and hard on himself. When I read a book, I want to read about a hero who stops at nothing to have his lover and is willing to break all the rules, but unfortunately that wasn't the case in this book.
After reading this one, it really made it obvious how little the couple in this communicated. I didn't feel it so much when I read TS but I did feel it when I read this one.
It's a shame really. I might still read the last book in this trilogy though.
LOVED being in Nathaniel's head! So many questions I had about Nathaniel and his actions in The Submissive were answered perfectly. The timeline runs the same, but you get so much more additional information and background that it doesn't feel redundant.
We get a deeper understanding of Nathaniel's reasoning, his reluctance with Abby and ultimately an open and honest look of what's truly in his heart.
Loving this series so far, and can't wait to jump into The Training and conclude the journey of Nathaniel and Abby. They both have so much more to learn about each other, their relationship and above all......their unyielding love.
4.5 stars! for The Dominant book #2 of The Submissive Trilogy. I f'loved book #1 The Submissive so I was super excited to jump into this book!
I will admit it was a little bit of a rough patch after realizing the whole book was going to be in his POV (my first experience with his/her POV) a little repetitive which i hadn't expected as I thought this book would've continued where The Submissive left off but didn't.
I must say reading it again in his POV was enlightening. It really shows Nathaniel's thought process which was a completely different perspective on how Abby was seeing things. It really answered my questions from book 1 and made Nathaniel even more sexy by exposing his insecurities making him less abrasive than I'd originally imagined. Nathaniel and Abby couldn't be more perfect for one another!
I would definitely recommend!
Im really looking forward to book # 3 The Training :D
This is the second book in the submissive trilogy, and i must say now ive read this book all the questions i had about The submissive (book 1) have been answered!
The whole story just clicks into place with this book as its written in Nathaniel point of view, so we get the meaning behind the safe word, and the why he does things and the way he does them. Book 1 was great and i loved the story but after reading this book, the story is just so much better.
The sex scenes mean more when you’ve read both sides of them, the emotion between both Abby and Nathaniel is so deep and meaningful when you have read both books.
The sex scenes in this book are erotic, steamy and seem to be in more detail this time around. I loved how Nathaniel, the dom that’s in control in book 1, or so it seemed from Abby’s point of view, was in just as much turmoil with his emotions as Abby, the way he struggled to place what he felt in his mind. The BDSM part of this book seems to be in more detail, i think this is because it is Nathaniel point of view describing them, which just made them more sexy.
Overall a stunning installment in the Submissive trilogy, Great piece of writing, wonderful reading cannot wait for book three
Loved it! Book 2 in the Submissive trilogy...BUT BE WARNED: this Does NOT pick up where the first book left off. It is basically the same book as the first (The Submissive) but from Nathaniel's POV. You hear his side of the story and some of the details that we didn't know from the first book. It was WAY over priced (think it was 7.99) however, having said that, I still really enjoyed it. It shows that Nathaniel may not be the total jerk he made himself out to be in book 1. This book has some really HOT SMOKIN sex!!!! I can't wait to read the third book The Training.
Since I always prefer EPOV, I liked The Dominant better than The Submissive. Beside the couple of new infos, I knew exactly what was about to happen all the time so it was not so addictive reading. Still very good though.
This is how you write a male POV novel that pairs with a prior story. There are so many new scenes, so much insight into his head and terrific heartbreak and vulnerability. I’m completely tied and bound to this series. THE DOMINANT leads you down the path of a complicated Hero, allowing you entry into the crevices of his mind that he doesn’t share with anyone else.
I adored Nathaniel. I mean, I thought I loved him at the end of The Submissive but NOPE, layers were peeled back and truths were exposed in THE DOMINANT and I’m now left feeling sated and fulfilled.
Nathaniel’s keeping his own secrets – ones that he thinks will ruin everything if Abby finds out. You watch him struggle with controlling his emotions and feelings. You understand why he shuts down the way that he does. You experience his complete and utter heartbreak and you become privy to conversations you never knew he had. What leads him to take the actions he takes in THE SUBMISSIVE? Now you know.
I was so excited to find out that Nathaniel’s actually active in the lifestyle and talks to other people about it. It’s a completely natural thing that makes sense, but for some reason I never really thought about how much I would enjoy the interaction he had with his mentors and friends. This book takes what you already know and tilts it, letting in the light, allowing you to see the story from a different angle. Exactly how it should be.
There are scenes that you only heard mentioned in THE SUBMISSIVE that you get to fully experience in this novel. I mean, this is perfection. Complete, fucking perfection. This one gets the complete five stars from me. It’s everything I hoped it would be and more.
I think it is because I am in the life style that i found so many errors with this book, maybe if i was a bored vanilla housewife (not that there is anything wrong with being that) I would of thought this book was kinky & exciting. Instead i found this book completely and utterly ridiculous. I sighed, I rolled my eyes, I got angry, I considered poking my eyes out... maybe even smashing my kindle into my face so i would never have to read drivel like this again all while reading this book. I would recommend this to no-one, I would recommend if you are given it as a gift, using it as a paper weight or doorstop.. do not waste a second of your life reading this!
I don't know why I just wasn't feeling this a whole lot. Maybe it's because I read the Submissive over a year ago so I kind of felt disconnected and forgot some things that happened. Will read the next book though.
